The Xbox app for PC is software; PC Game Pass is a subscription. The app is a Windows hub for finding, downloading, launching and organizing games. PC Game Pass is an entitlement that lets you play the eligible PC games included in the catalog while your subscription and the title’s availability remain valid. You can use the app with games you bought or already installed from supported PC storefronts, so a PC Game Pass subscription is not required simply to open the app or manage your own games.

What the Xbox app for PC actually does
A launcher and library hub
Microsoft describes the Xbox PC app as a place to browse and download Game Pass games, launch games, connect with friends and bring Xbox, Game Pass and installed games from other PC storefronts into one library view. It is therefore a tool for finding and managing software, not the license that makes every listed game playable.
The app can be useful even if you never subscribe. A person who has purchased a PC game, or who already has a supported game installed through another storefront, can use the Xbox app as an additional way to find and launch that installation. The exact library contents depend on whether the title and storefront integration are supported.

What the app does not do
- It does not automatically grant access to the entire Game Pass catalog.
- It does not turn a game you have not purchased into an owned game.
- It does not replace the storefront that sold a game for purchases, refunds, account settings or every game-specific function.
- It does not remove a title’s Windows, hardware, region or storefront requirements.
Xbox Wire’s September 15, 2025 announcement describes the unified library as a way to access installed games and play history in one place. That announcement supports aggregation and launching, not the claim that one app becomes the account or purchase system for every other store.
What PC Game Pass actually is
A subscription entitlement
PC Game Pass is the paid access layer. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules state that PC Game Pass can be used on compatible Windows devices, with use governed by the subscription terms and the availability and compatibility of each title. When a game is included in the catalog, the subscription is the reason your account is allowed to install and play it; the Xbox app is the interface commonly used to find and manage that installation.
Catalog access is conditional
“Included with PC Game Pass” is not the same as “owned forever.” A title can leave the catalog, a subscription can expire, or a specific edition can have requirements that your PC does not meet. Availability can also differ by country. Check the current listing and the terms for your region before relying on a particular game.
The catalog is also not a compatibility guarantee. A game may be in the service but require a 64-bit version of Windows, a particular graphics feature, enough storage, a supported processor or another prerequisite. The title’s own store listing and system requirements remain authoritative for whether it will run on your machine.

Can you use the Xbox app without PC Game Pass?
Yes. Microsoft says the Xbox PC app can manage purchased games, and its library can include installed games from other storefronts. A subscription is needed only when the access to a particular game comes from PC Game Pass.
What a non-subscriber can do
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Browse the app’s game listings and other available content.
- Manage eligible games purchased through supported Microsoft channels.
- See supported games that are already installed through another PC storefront.
- Launch a game from the aggregated library when the required installation and account access are present.
- Use the app’s supported social and library features without treating the app as a subscription.
What happens when a game needs a subscription
If you select a catalog title that you have not bought and do not have another entitlement for, the app can show an option to subscribe or purchase. Installing the app does not bypass that check. The game’s access is validated against the Microsoft account, the current catalog and the title’s regional and technical rules.
Can you play your own PC games in the Xbox app?
Often, yes, when the game is installed through a supported storefront and the Xbox app can recognize it. The app’s library aggregation is designed to bring supported installed games together, so you can use one view for discovery and launching rather than switching between every launcher just to find an installation.

Recognition in the Xbox app does not move the purchase to Microsoft. You may still need the original storefront’s client, account sign-in, digital-rights check, updates or overlay for the game to start. A game can therefore be visible in the Xbox app while its purchase, cloud saves, achievements or downloadable content remain tied to the service where you acquired it.

Why a game may not appear
- The title or storefront is not supported by the app’s library integration.
- The game is not installed, or its installation path has not been detected.
- You are signed into a different account from the one that owns the game.
- The storefront client or game needs an update before it can be launched.
- The title has technical or regional restrictions that prevent the expected integration.
In these cases, use the original storefront to verify ownership and installation, then check whether the title is supported for aggregation. Do not interpret a missing library tile as proof that you have lost the purchase.
What changes when you add PC Game Pass?
You gain catalog-based access
A subscription adds the ability to install and play eligible PC Game Pass titles under the service’s current terms. The Xbox app provides the catalog view and download workflow, while the subscription supplies the entitlement behind that workflow.
You do not gain universal access
PC Game Pass does not automatically include every Xbox-related game, every edition, every downloadable expansion or every title on Windows. Read the individual listing for the included edition, supported device, language and other restrictions. If a game leaves the catalog, continued access generally requires buying it or obtaining another valid entitlement.
Your existing purchases remain separate
Buying a game through another storefront and subscribing to PC Game Pass are two different transactions. A subscription does not merge accounts, convert a third-party purchase into a Microsoft purchase or guarantee that saves and add-ons move between storefront versions.

Compatibility: Windows PCs, Arm devices and individual titles
General Windows compatibility
Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe PC Game Pass as usable on compatible Windows devices. “Compatible” applies to the particular title as well as to the operating system: a supported version of Windows alone does not guarantee that every catalog game will run.
Arm-based Windows 11 PCs
In a Windows Experience Blog announcement dated January 21, 2026, Microsoft said the Xbox app was available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. The same announcement reported that more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. That is a dated Microsoft catalog figure, not a promise that every Game Pass game works on every Arm computer.
For an Arm PC, check the individual game listing, the developer’s system requirements and any notes about native Arm support or emulation. The 85% figure is useful for setting expectations at catalog level; it cannot answer whether one specific title will run acceptably on your model.

- Confirm that your edition of Windows is supported.
- Compare the game’s processor, memory, graphics and storage requirements with your PC.
- Check whether the title supports your device architecture, especially on Arm-based Windows 11 hardware.
- Verify that the game is available in your country and included in the edition you intend to use.
- Allow space for the full installation and future updates, not just the initial download.

Prices, tiers and regional availability
There is no single worldwide price that can be stated responsibly. Microsoft’s current plan names, prices, taxes, promotional offers and included benefits can vary by country and can change after the date of publication. The official sources available for this comparison do not establish a current country-specific price or a complete tier-by-tier benefits table.
Before subscribing, open Microsoft’s live PC Game Pass plan page for your country and verify:
- The recurring price and billing interval after any introductory offer.
- The exact tier name available in your region.
- Whether the games you want are currently listed as included.
- Compatible Windows and hardware requirements.
- Cancellation, renewal and catalog-removal terms.
Do not treat a price seen in another country, an old article or a temporary promotion as your current cost.

Which one should you install or buy?
Choose the Xbox app when your goal is organization
Install or use the Xbox app if you want a Windows interface that combines supported Xbox and Game Pass content with installed games from other PC storefronts. It is the appropriate choice for centralizing discovery and launching, even when all of your games are individually purchased.

Choose PC Game Pass when your goal is catalog access
Subscribe when the current catalog contains enough games you want to play to justify recurring access, and when your PC meets the requirements for those titles. The subscription is optional for the app itself; its value comes from the games and terms attached to the plan.
Use both when you want the complete workflow
For a subscriber, the normal relationship is complementary: the Xbox app is the place to browse, install and launch, while PC Game Pass is the entitlement that unlocks eligible catalog games. Keeping that distinction clear makes it easier to understand why some library entries play immediately, some require a purchase or subscription and others open through a different storefront.
The bottom line
The Xbox app is a Windows game-management hub, not a Game Pass membership. PC Game Pass is a subscription that grants conditional access to an eligible catalog on compatible Windows devices. You can use the app without subscribing to organize purchased and supported installed games; subscribe only when you want the catalog access and have confirmed the title, region and hardware requirements.
