X said on October 14, 2026, that it suspended more than 13,000 accounts across three suspected foreign influence operations it linked to Iran, Russia and China. The combined action came 20 days before the November 3 U.S. midterm elections. X described the accounts as inauthentic networks that amplified political content, but it has not published a country-by-country count or public supporting evidence for those attributions.
What X announced
The platform said its Safety team removed more than 13,000 accounts involved in three suspected operations. The figure is a combined total; it does not mean that 13,000 accounts were tied to each country.

| Question | What X reported |
|---|---|
| When? | October 14, 2026 |
| How many accounts? | More than 13,000 across all three operations combined |
| Which countries did X name? | Iran, Russia and China |
| What did the accounts do? | Posted and amplified political content about U.S. politics, targeting candidates and public figures across the political spectrum |
| How were they found? | Proactive sweeps and investigations by X’s Safety team |
| Rules cited by X | Policies addressing spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior |
X Global Government Affairs framed the move as an effort to preserve authentic political discussion:
“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and we are proud that X is the global town square where these debates happen. Our job is to keep that conversation authentic, open, and safe.”

Why the accounts were suspended
Inauthentic coordination
X said the networks relied on inauthentic accounts rather than ordinary users acting independently. The alleged behavior included posting political material and amplifying messages so that they appeared more popular or widespread than genuine engagement would indicate.
Political targeting
According to X, the content concerned U.S. politics and targeted candidates and public figures across the political spectrum. That description does not establish that every post supported one party or viewpoint; it indicates that the activity was aimed at influencing political conversation rather than confined to a single ideological lane.
How X says it detected the networks
X attributed the removals to proactive sweeps and investigations by its Safety team. The announcement did not describe the technical signals used, such as account-link analysis, posting patterns, infrastructure or coordination markers. Without those details, readers cannot independently reproduce the detection process or assess how many legitimate accounts may have been reviewed before suspension.

- X has not said how many of the suspended accounts it associates with Iran, Russia or China individually.
- The announcement did not publish the evidence or methodology supporting those country attributions.
- No independent government confirmation of the account total or the three-country attribution was identified in the contemporaneous reporting.
Consequently, “linked to Iran, Russia and China” is X’s characterization of suspected operations, not an independently established finding. The wording also matters: a suspension is an enforcement action, while attribution is a separate judgment about who organized or directed activity.

Election safeguards X points to
X said its Civic Integrity policy covers misleading information about how, when and where to vote, as well as attempts to suppress turnout or intimidate voters. Users who encounter election-related posts can use the Civic Integrity reporting option to request a Community Note. X may also add labels in urgent cases involving policy violations.
What a user can do
- Open the post’s reporting menu and choose the Civic Integrity option when the issue concerns voting information, turnout suppression or voter intimidation.
- Describe the specific claim or conduct, rather than reporting a post solely because it supports an opposing political view.
- Check for a Community Note or an X-applied label, while remembering that neither feature proves that every disputed claim has been resolved.
- Verify voting dates, locations and eligibility with the relevant official election authority before sharing practical voting information.
What the timing means for the 2026 midterms
The announcement arrived shortly before the November 3 election, when political posts can spread quickly and enforcement decisions receive heightened attention. Removing coordinated accounts may reduce one channel for artificial amplification, but the public information does not show how much of the overall political conversation those accounts represented or whether related activity remains elsewhere.
Rank #4
Readers should therefore separate three questions: whether the accounts violated X’s rules, whether the networks were actually directed from the countries named, and how much influence the activity had on voters. X has asserted the first and the second in its announcement, but it has not released enough public detail to independently measure the latter two.

The number is an enforcement total reported by X for three suspected operations, not a count of confirmed foreign agents, a measure of posts removed, or an estimate of votes affected. It also cannot be converted into country totals because X has not supplied that breakdown. Any comparison with another platform’s takedown would need to account for differences in what each service counts as an account, how it defines a coordinated network and whether it publishes technical evidence.
