Tideward, a forthcoming board game by Wyrmspan and Apiary designer Connie Vogelmann, is scheduled to make its first public demo at SPIEL Essen 2026. The reported game has players guide newly hatched sea turtles toward underwater algal mats, combining movement, positioning and private objectives in a lighter strategy game aimed at ages 10 and up.
What is Tideward?
Tideward is a reported two-to-four-player board game about getting baby sea turtles from the beach to underwater algal mats while avoiding predators. The game’s mechanics and release details below come from a Polygon report reproduced by a secondary outlet; no official Tideward product or rules page was located to independently confirm them.

How a turn works
Players take three actions per turn, choosing among hatching eggs, gathering food to fuel a turtle’s journey, and moving hatchlings. The algal mats score differently based on how turtles are arranged, so the reported central puzzle is not simply to move quickly but to place turtles where they can score.

Secret quest cards give players private goals and opportunities for extra points. The game reportedly ends when one player has moved all of their turtles into the water; the highest score wins. These are reported rules, not the result of an independently observed playthrough.

Why Vogelmann describes it as lighter
Vogelmann told Polygon that Tideward is “lighter than Apiary and Wyrmspan, but there is a lot of strategy.” She said the idea came to her while walking the halls of Gen Con: she had been working on a more complex game with interlocking rondels, then decided to focus the puzzle on automated movement. Baby turtles followed from that design idea, and she said the game was nearly fully formed by the time she crossed the convention hall.
The report gives Tideward an age recommendation of 10 and up, compared with 14 and up for Apiary and Wyrmspan. Vogelmann said she was interested in making a lighter game and in bringing new gamers into the hobby. That framing suggests an accessible entry point with meaningful decisions, rather than a claim that the game has been independently assessed as easy to learn.

Wyrmspan is a standalone dragon-themed game inspired by mechanisms from Wingspan, and its publisher explicitly says it is not compatible with Wingspan. That is useful context for Vogelmann’s prior work, but it does not establish a mechanical connection between Wyrmspan and Tideward.
