The Wunder360 S1 was a 2018 crowdfunding camera built around an ambitious idea: capture spherical photos or video, then use a cloud service to reconstruct a 3D point cloud or mesh. It also promised ordinary 360-degree capture, AI subject tracking, stabilization and a motion-composite effect. But the 3D feature was not a built-in depth scanner, hands-on coverage raised concerns about image quality and stabilization, and current app, cloud and support status cannot be verified. In 2026, it is best treated as a historical, experimental 360 camera—not a dependable modern 3D scanner.

What was the Wunder360 S1?

Shenzhen-based Evomotion introduced the S1 in 2018 as a pocket-sized dual-lens camera. Its basic job was to capture 360-degree photos and video, with real-time stitching intended to make the files usable without a separate stitching step. The campaign added AI tracking, stabilization, live streaming and cloud-based 3D reconstruction to that core camera proposition. The promotional video called it the “first” 3D-scanning and 360 AI camera, but that is campaign language, not an independently established industry distinction. The launch video shows the promoted features; contemporary reporting described the product as a $189 pocket-sized camera with automatic 3D-model ambitions.

The distinction matters: the S1 combined a conventional 360 camera with a proposed image-reconstruction service. It was not presented as a camera containing LiDAR or another dedicated depth sensor.

What did “3D scanning” mean on the S1?

The reported concept was photogrammetric or videogrammetric reconstruction: software estimates three-dimensional structure from multiple overlapping views. The camera would capture 360 imagery, while processing would happen through a phone and the company’s cloud service. The advertised workflow was:

  1. Capture a series of 360-degree stills or video around a scene.
  2. Transfer or upload the material through a smartphone and the service.
  3. Let the cloud system process the imagery into a point cloud.
  4. Convert or export the result as a 3D model or other usable output.

These terms describe different things. 360 capture records a spherical view. Photogrammetric reconstruction estimates geometry from images. Depth scanning measures distance with hardware such as LiDAR or structured light. 3D modeling is the resulting point cloud, mesh or textured asset. The S1’s “3D scanning” claim belongs primarily to the second category, with cloud processing as a required part of the proposed workflow—not direct, survey-grade measurement by the camera.

Image-based reconstruction can be affected by overlapping coverage, lighting, motion, reflective or textureless surfaces, and processing software. The contemporary reports do not establish the S1’s measurement accuracy, dependable export formats, texture quality or suitability for precise architectural work. The hands-on report later said the reconstruction feature appeared unavailable at that point. Because the service was central to the S1’s distinctive promise, a working camera alone does not prove that its 3D function works today.

What features did the campaign promote?

360 capture and stitching

The two-lens design captured spherical stills and video. In-camera real-time stitching was intended to reduce the work required after recording. That promise should not be confused with flawless seams: the hands-on report noted reasonable stitching in sample material but visible distortion or pinching near the zenith in some shots.

AI subject tracking

Launch coverage described a convolutional-neural-network system intended to recognize a primary subject and keep tracking it. “AI” alone does not show how reliably it handles occlusion, several people, dim scenes or fast movement. The available reporting does not provide a robust independent benchmark for those cases.

Stabilization and live streaming

The S1 was promoted with sensor-assisted stabilization and live streaming. However, the hands-on reviewer later judged stabilization underwhelming. The existence of a feature claim does not establish its quality in demanding movement or its compatibility with current streaming platforms and phones.

Phantom Clipper

Phantom Clipper was a multiple-exposure effect: successive positions of a moving subject could appear together in one composition. It was promoted for activities such as sports, dance and performance analysis. It is a visual effect, not motion capture, depth tracking or 3D reconstruction.

Waterproof housing and accessories

The camera itself was reported as not waterproof. A separate housing was advertised with an approximate 30-metre/100-foot rating, but that is a historical housing claim, not evidence that an old case’s seals remain safe. Packages varied; campaign bundles could include a housing, spare battery, dual-battery charger, selfie stick or mini tripod. Do not assume any of those are included with a used camera.

What did hands-on coverage find?

The strongest available hands-on account found the S1 compact, with solid initial build impressions, simple controls and a straightforward smartphone connection. It also noted slower-than-ideal startup and some stitching distortion. Its later assessment was considerably less enthusiastic: image quality was judged below the standard of contemporary 2018 360 cameras, stabilization was called underwhelming, and the 3D-reconstruction function appeared unavailable at the time of the update. The same report raised concerns that Indiegogo backers had not yet received their cameras as of December 25, 2018. See the account and its updates at 360 Rumors.

Not all launch coverage involved a test. Geo Week News explicitly said it had not personally tested the device and could not verify the manufacturer’s claims. That makes it important to separate reported specifications and campaign promises from observed performance.

Campaign history and historical pricing

The S1’s Indiegogo campaign ended around September 1, 2018, according to a campaign tracker. Its Japanese Makuake project ended December 17, 2018. The campaign page reported 7,843 supporters and about ¥100 million raised in Japan; those figures are specific to that project, not a consolidated global total. Historical US pricing varied by stage and coverage: early-bird offers were reported from about $129, a planned retail price was cited around $189, and one hands-on review listed $299 alongside the $129 early-bird price. Makuake listed a planned general retail price of ¥41,904 and early campaign tiers of ¥25,140 and ¥29,330. These are 2018-era figures, not current prices.

Can the 3D feature or app still be used in 2026?

Current official app availability, cloud processing, firmware, warranty and support could not be verified. The Makuake page records the historical campaign and mentions store sales, but it does not establish dependable current stock, active cloud access or worldwide support. Treat the 3D workflow as unverified unless a seller demonstrates a new reconstruction on a service that is currently accessible.

Basic 360 recording and cloud reconstruction are separate questions. A functioning camera might still record files even if the app is incompatible with a current phone or the processing service is unavailable. Before buying, ask to see an actual file transferred and opened in the intended workflow; do not infer cloud functionality from a power-on demonstration.

Should you buy a Wunder360 S1 in 2026?

Buyer or use case Recommendation
Collector or technology historian Possibly, if the price reflects its age and the unit is complete and functional.
Casual 360 experimentation Only if the seller demonstrates recording, transfer and playback with your intended setup.
Professional virtual tours Avoid relying on it for a current supported workflow.
Accurate 3D scanning or surveying Not a suitable choice on the evidence available.
Underwater use Only with a verified, undamaged housing and seals; the camera itself is not waterproof.
Current phone compatibility or manufacturer support required Avoid unless compatibility and support are directly confirmed.

A used S1 may interest collectors or hobbyists experimenting with early 360 hardware, but the combination of 2018-era image quality, reported weak stabilization, cloud dependence and unverified support makes it a risky primary camera. If the goal is simply spherical video, investigate current consumer 360 cameras with demonstrably supported software. If the goal is a 3D asset, compare smartphone photogrammetry apps, LiDAR-equipped devices and dedicated scanners; these are different workflows, not direct equivalents to the S1. Relevant vendor categories include Insta360, RICOH THETA, Polycam and Matterport. Check current models, support and pricing directly; none is presented here as a feature-for-feature S1 replacement.

What to check before buying a used unit

A listing that proves only that the camera turns on is not enough. Request evidence of the complete workflow relevant to your use:

  • Ask for a photo of the exact camera and its serial label, plus a power-on video.
  • Request a short sample 360 photo or video and confirm it opens and plays as intended.
  • Have the seller show that the battery charges and holds a charge; aged removable batteries may have lost capacity.
  • Ask for a demonstration of app or control-interface connection and file transfer to a phone or computer.
  • If 3D reconstruction is the reason for buying, require a current sample result—not an old campaign image.
  • If a waterproof case is advertised, verify that it is included and inspect seals and latches. A historical depth rating does not prove the case is safe now.
  • Confirm the battery, charger, cable, microSD compatibility and mounting hardware included in the sale; campaign accessories varied.

Typical failure points include an app that no longer connects, files that cannot be stitched or edited, an unavailable cloud service, battery deterioration, missing accessories, and stitching or stabilization shortcomings already noted in contemporary coverage. A seller unable to demonstrate transfer and playback leaves the most important compatibility question unanswered.
