Choose Crota’s End if you are a new Destiny player. It is the reprised raid available in the Destiny 2 ecosystem, with a documented current reward structure and a mechanic vocabulary that repeats from encounter to encounter. Wrath of the Machine is a Destiny 1 raid from Rise of Iron, so it is not a directly comparable Destiny 2 activity. Pick Wrath only if you specifically want the SIVA storyline, the Rise of Iron setting, and access to Destiny 1.
The platform distinction changes the answer
The phrase “Destiny 2 raid” in this comparison is misleading. Bungie’s 2023 Showcase recap describes Crota’s End as a reprised raid for Destiny 2. Bungie’s Destiny 1 support documentation lists Wrath of the Machine among the continuing Destiny 1 raid activities. In practical terms, Crota’s End belongs to a current Destiny 2 learning path; Wrath belongs to the Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron experience.

That means a new player choosing between them is not merely selecting the easier of two activities on the same platform. You are also choosing which game, expansion context, character progression system, and reward ecosystem to use. If your friends are already playing Destiny 2, Crota’s End is the straightforward choice. Wrath requires access to Destiny 1 with Rise of Iron and a group willing to play that legacy version.

The table does not establish an official difficulty ranking. Bungie has not published a measured completion-time comparison, failure rate or beginner score for these raids. The recommendation for Crota’s End is therefore a practical editorial judgment based on platform access, current systems and the way its mechanics teach a new team.
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
What a first raid actually asks of a team
Bungie calls raids “the most emblematic endgame activity in Destiny 2.” That description matters for beginners: a raid is a six-player activity built around communication, role assignments, synchronized actions and recovery after mistakes. It is not simply a longer strike with more enemies.
Every player should be able to hear callouts, understand the agreed jobs and explain what happens when a mechanic fails. A team can be new to raiding while still succeeding, but it needs a plan for voice communication, loadouts, revives and learning attempts. Neither raid has an authoritative Bungie rating that says “easy for beginners.”
How Crota’s End teaches a new team
A recurring vocabulary
Crota’s End has a coherent through-line built around the Chalice of Light, aura or Oversoul progression and sword play. A player who learns how the team receives, carries and hands off the relevant objective is practicing a pattern that returns instead of starting from an entirely new ruleset in every encounter. A community guide describes the raid as first-time-friendly; that is player experience, not an official Bungie rating, but it explains why many sherpas use Crota’s End as an early teaching raid.
Recommended Free Tools
The repeated vocabulary does not remove the need for positioning or damage control. It gives a new player a mental anchor: identify the current holder, know when the handoff occurs, and understand whether the team is building progress toward an Oversoul or preparing a sword damage window.
The four encounter names
Bungie’s later armor-loot update identifies four encounters: Abyss, Oversoul Throne Bridge, Ir Yut and Crota, Son of Oryx. A new group can therefore divide its learning session into four clearly named stages rather than treating the raid as one continuous puzzle.
- Abyss: learn movement, survivability and the basic progression vocabulary before the team reaches later damage checks.
- Oversoul Throne Bridge: practice coordinated bridge progression and role handoffs while maintaining awareness of the arena.
- Ir Yut: shift from traversal and progression into a more deliberate damage and timing encounter.
- Crota, Son of Oryx: combine the raid’s sword, aura and team-synchronization concepts in its final encounter.
Those descriptions are learning priorities, not a claim that any encounter is automatically easy. A first team should ask its leader to explain the wipe condition, the recovery plan and the damage signal before starting each section.
Power and launch context
For Crota’s End’s 2023 launch, Bungie stated that players needed to be at 1790 Power to be at the cap for all encounters. That number describes the launch Contest Mode context; it is not a universal promise about every later version of the activity. Contest Mode was enabled for 48 hours. Clearing Contest Mode unlocked Challenge Mode and the Superior Swordplay Triumph.

- Online only and requires a PlayStation Plus membership.
- An incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe filled with action and adventure.
- Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customizable weapons, gear, and vehicles.
- Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre and breaks traditional conventions of story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.
Necrochasm and other rewards
Crota’s End also offers a documented reward path beyond ordinary encounter drops. Bungie said Contest Mode players could receive the Bottomless Pit quest, while Essence of the Oversoul comes from encounters and Triumphs. The raid’s Destiny 2 armor and weapon pool, plus Challenge Mode rewards, gives a current player reasons to keep learning after the first clear.
How Wrath of the Machine teaches—and pressures—a team
SIVA and Devil Splicer mechanics
Wrath of the Machine is built around SIVA and the Devil Splicers. Bungie’s mechanics coverage describes several distinct tasks:
- Collect voltage to power spinners.
- Throw SIVA charges at the required targets.
- Match elemental cannons to the correct Servitors.
- Survive and coordinate the moving Siege Engine encounter.
- Use Empowered players to stun Aksis.
These mechanics are individually understandable, but they ask the group to switch mental models repeatedly. A player may need to watch a resource meter in one phase, identify a matching element in another, move with a large machine under pressure, and then recognize the Empowered status and execute a stun at the right moment.
Why the role switching matters to beginners
Wrath can be a good first raid for a team whose main goal is to learn communication under changing conditions. It demands clear callouts such as which voltage station is active, which cannon matches a Servitor and who is Empowered. It is less forgiving of a player who waits passively for the same job every phase.

The practical distinction is that Wrath presents more different mechanic types and more role switching than a new player may expect from a first raid.
The legacy-platform cost
To play Wrath, you need Destiny 1 access with Rise of Iron. A physical copy of Destiny: Rise of Iron may be relevant if you choose this route, but check the console platform, region, seller and whether the listing is new or used before buying. The expansion context is not optional flavor: it is the setting and loot framework in which Wrath exists.
Which raid is easier for a first timer?
For most new Destiny players, Crota’s End is the easier starting recommendation. This is not a Bungie-certified ranking or a measured completion statistic. It follows from three practical facts:
Rank #3
- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
- It is the activity in the Destiny 2 ecosystem. A player already leveling and collecting gear in Destiny 2 does not need to move to a different game and expansion context.
- Its teaching pattern repeats. Chalice, aura, Oversoul and sword concepts give the team a common vocabulary to reinforce as the raid progresses.
- Its current reward structure supports continued practice. Encounter loot, Triumphs, Challenge Mode rewards and the Necrochasm path give a Destiny 2 player a reason to return.
Wrath may feel easier to a veteran who already knows Destiny 1 movement, SIVA callouts and the Aksis stun sequence. Conversely, a player who loves mechanical variety may prefer Wrath’s changing jobs. “Easier” depends partly on the team’s existing game knowledge, but Crota is the safer default for a genuinely new group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan you play Wrath of the Machine in Destiny 2?
No. Wrath of the Machine is a Destiny 1 raid associated with Rise of Iron; it is not a Destiny 2 version of the activity. Crota’s End is the Destiny 2 reprised raid in this comparison. If your group only owns or plays Destiny 2, Wrath is not an alternative raid you can launch there.
That distinction also affects progression. Destiny 2 gear, Power discussion and Crota’s End reward pursuits should not be treated as interchangeable with Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron loot. Decide on the platform before you spend time assembling a team or purchasing an expansion.
Choosing by player and team profile
| If this describes you | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You are new to Destiny and already play Destiny 2 | Crota’s End | No platform switch; the repeated Chalice, aura and sword concepts provide a consistent learning path. |
| Your group wants a current Destiny 2 raid goal | Crota’s End | Its reprised activity, armor structure, Triumphs and Necrochasm path belong to Destiny 2. |
| You specifically want SIVA and the Devil Splicers | Wrath of the Machine | Those are the raid’s defining setting and mechanics. |
| You own or can access Destiny 1 with Rise of Iron | Wrath of the Machine | The required game and expansion context is already available. |
| Your team enjoys rotating jobs and varied callouts | Wrath of the Machine | Voltage, charges, elemental cannons, the Siege Engine and Empowered stuns create different coordination demands. |
| You want a historical Destiny experience rather than a current learning path | Wrath of the Machine | Its value is tied to the original Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron era. |
A practical first-raid plan for Crota’s End
Before you form the group
- Confirm that everyone is playing Destiny 2 and can access Crota’s End.
- Use a six-player roster and assign one raid lead who can explain each encounter before the first pull.
- Agree on voice chat, callout words and a no-blame rule for learning wipes.
- Ask every player to bring a survivable general-purpose loadout plus a damage option; the leader should specify any encounter-specific requirements before the run.
- Set aside time for teaching rather than promising a fast clear. No authoritative completion-time comparison between these raids is established.
Teach the mechanic before the action
- Name the objective. Explain what the Chalice, aura, Oversoul or sword represents in the current encounter.
- Assign ownership. Every player should know who carries, who receives the handoff and who watches the failure condition.
- Define the signal. Use one short phrase for a handoff, damage start, wipe warning or revive priority.
- Run a low-pressure demonstration. Let the team see one cycle before demanding a full clear.
- Review one mistake at a time. Identify the missed handoff or positioning error, change one assignment if needed and pull again.
Use the reward loop to keep learning
After a first clear, look at the encounter drops, Triumph requirements and the Necrochasm-related objectives rather than treating the raid as finished forever. Repeating a single encounter to make a mechanic automatic is more useful for a new player than immediately adding another unfamiliar raid.

Confirm the legacy requirements first
- Verify that every player has Destiny 1 and Rise of Iron on a compatible platform.
- Check the platform and region before buying a physical copy; confirm whether it is new or used and what access it includes.
- Make sure the group understands that Destiny 1 progression and loot are separate from Destiny 2.
- Choose a leader who knows the voltage, SIVA charge, cannon, Siege Engine and Aksis terminology.
Teach one mechanic family at a time
- Resource callouts: practice identifying voltage locations and stating who is collecting each charge.
- Target matching: say the elemental cannon and Servitor pairing out loud before firing.
- Movement: explain where the team moves during the Siege Engine sequence and who handles recovery if someone falls behind.
- Empowered timing: make the Empowered player’s stun responsibility explicit before the Aksis attempt.
Wrath rewards a team that speaks continuously but concisely. Long explanations during an active damage phase are less useful than agreed one-word or two-word calls made before the phase begins.
Finding teammates and teaching support
Both raids require six players, so a solo newcomer may need a clan, friends or a matchmaking alternative. Bungie describes Guided Games as a way for solo players to connect with guiding clans for selected endgame activities. Availability and eligibility can vary, so check the current in-game options rather than assuming every raid is always listed.
If you use a community LFG group, state your experience honestly: “first raid,” “learning,” or “comfortable with damage but new to mechanics” gives the leader enough information to assign a safe role. Ask in advance whether the group is teaching, speed-running or requiring prior clears. The wrong expectation is a more common source of frustration than a single failed damage phase.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Assuming the names mean the same game
Fix: confirm the platform and expansion before discussing builds, Power or loot. Crota’s End is the Destiny 2 choice; Wrath is Destiny 1 with Rise of Iron.
Calling one raid objectively “easy”
Fix: describe the learning pattern instead. Crota repeats a smaller set of concepts; Wrath changes mechanic families more often. Neither statement is a measured official difficulty ranking.

Fix: write a short team glossary before the first encounter. “Chalice,” “handoff,” “Empowered,” a cannon element and the chosen wipe call should each have one meaning.
Changing roles after every mistake
Fix: change only the assignment linked to the failure. Constantly rotating six jobs prevents players from learning cause and effect.
Buying the wrong legacy edition
Fix: verify platform, region, seller and new/used condition for any physical Rise of Iron purchase. A listing that looks correct may not match the console or access your group needs.
Expecting a fast clear on a teaching run
Fix: schedule learning time, use wipes as information and set a stopping point. A calm first session produces better future clears than rushing through a mechanic nobody understands.
Final decision
Start with Crota’s End if your goal is to learn raiding in Destiny 2. It is the current-platform option, its Chalice, aura, Oversoul and sword concepts form a recognizable progression, and its armor, Triumph, Challenge Mode and Necrochasm systems give beginners a reason to practice.
Choose Wrath of the Machine when the priority is SIVA, Devil Splicers, the Rise of Iron era or a legacy Destiny 1 experience. It is a worthwhile historical raid, but it requires a different game context and asks a first-time team to coordinate more varied mechanic families. That makes it a deliberate second choice for most new Destiny players, not the default answer to a Destiny 2 raid question.
