For the original Destiny 1 Wrath of the Machine raid, build for team utility before personal damage. A Defender Titan, Nightstalker Hunter and Stormcaller Warlock cover the raid’s most important jobs; explosive hand cannons or scouts handle Shanks and Vandals; high-impact snipers cover majors and turrets; and heavy weapons change by encounter. The normal raid recommended Light Level is 370, while Heroic lists 380—historical Destiny 1 values from Rise of Iron, not Destiny 2 power requirements.
What Wrath of the Machine requires
Wrath of the Machine is Rise of Iron’s six-player Destiny 1 raid. It launched on September 23, 2016, and its Heroic version followed on October 18, 2016. The encounters are Vosik, the Siege Engine and Aksis, Archon Prime. Destinypedia’s raid overview uses the line “Where the Light ends, evolution begins.”

| Version | Recommended Light Level | Armor defense listed for drops | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | 370 | About 365–385 Defense | Learn mechanics and establish reliable roles. |
| Heroic | 380 | About 380–400 Defense for Spliced/Heroic pieces | Expect less room for mistakes and tighter damage execution. |
Those numbers belong to the 2016 Destiny 1 sandbox. Do not convert them into a Destiny 2 Power target. In either mode, being at the listed level is only a baseline: recovery, ammunition discipline and knowing where to stand matter more than chasing one famous item.
Choose subclasses around raid jobs
Wrath of the Machine rewards a balanced fireteam rather than six copies of the same damage build. The recommendations below are the clearest starting point, with alternatives when your roster already covers a role.
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
| Class and subclass | Suggested tools | Best contribution | When to switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titan — Defender | Weapons of Light, Bastion, Illuminated | Team support, safe damage setup and emergency protection. | Use Sunbreaker when the group has enough support and needs more add clear. |
| Hunter — Nightstalker | Black Hole, Light of the Pack and invisibility options | Tether-based control, orb generation and safer movement or revives. | Use Gunslinger with Celestial Nighthawk when enough Nightstalkers are already present and a dedicated burst shot is more valuable. |
| Warlock — Stormcaller | Chaining-focused abilities and Transcendence tools | Clearing clustered Splicer enemies and protecting lanes during add waves. | Use Sunsinger when survival, self-recovery or learning a mechanic is the priority. |
Defender Titan: the default support anchor
Weapons of Light turns a well-placed Ward of Dawn into a team damage tool, while Bastion and Illuminated improve the usefulness and durability of that support window. Place the bubble where the team can enter for the buff without losing sight of the encounter. A second Titan can choose Sunbreaker if the group already has dependable protection and needs help thinning enemies.
Nightstalker Hunter: control and safe movement
Nightstalker’s tether is valuable when enemies arrive in groups, and invisibility helps with dangerous rotations, orb collection and revives. Black Hole extends the control value of the tether, while Light of the Pack rewards a team that coordinates orb generation. Gunslinger is a sensible damage alternative only after the group has enough tether coverage.
Stormcaller or Sunsinger Warlock
Stormcaller is the recommended add-duty choice because chained attacks can remove packs that would otherwise overwhelm a lane. Keep a Sunsinger option available for progression attempts: the survival fallback is often worth more than theoretical clear speed when players are still learning timings.
Runner and movement considerations
Players assigned to carry objects or make fast rotations can favor agility once their survivability is comfortable. Do not sacrifice the recovery and resilience investment that keeps a runner alive while crossing an exposed area; a slightly faster route is useless if it produces a death and a dropped objective.
Build the weapon set by job
A useful Wrath loadout has a dependable primary, a high-impact special weapon and encounter-specific heavy ammunition. The goal is to cover range, enemy type and damage windows rather than equip three weapons that all perform the same task.

| Slot and role | Recommended type or example | Why it works | Limitation to plan around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary: general add clear | Explosive-round hand cannon | Body shots remain useful against Splicer Vandals, and explosive damage helps against Shanks, which lack critical-hit spots. | Manage range and reload timing; do not treat it as a substitute for a long-range precision weapon. |
| Primary: ammunition-friendly option | High-impact scout rifle with explosive rounds | Longer effective range and more economical ammunition use when lanes are open. | Sustained output can feel slower in close quarters. |
| Special: majors and precision targets | High-impact sniper, such as Ex Machina or Event Horizon | Handles major Shanks, turrets, monitors and short damage windows. | Requires ammunition awareness and reliable aim. |
| Special: close-lane backup | Low-impact, high-rate-of-fire shotgun | Gives a lane guard immediate close-range control. | Coordinate with the team so too many players do not give up sniper coverage. |
| Heavy: precision burst | Sleeper Simulant | Very high theoretical damage when precision hits are practical. | Movement can make precision shots unreliable. |
| Heavy: forgiving burst | Gjallarhorn or a legendary rocket launcher | Explosive damage remains useful when targets or players are moving. | Watch blast radius and ammunition; rockets are not a replacement for sustained add control. |
| Heavy: close-range control | Dark-Drinker | Excellent for Captains and groups that must be controlled at sword range. | Requires deliberate positioning and a safe approach. |
Explosive primaries against Shanks and Vandals
Explosive rounds are particularly valuable because Shanks do not offer a conventional critical spot. A body-shot-friendly hand cannon lets you keep dealing useful damage while moving between cover. A high-impact explosive scout is the safer alternative when the encounter keeps you at distance or you want to stretch primary ammunition.
Why sniper coverage still matters
High-impact snipers fill several jobs at once: deleting major Shanks, breaking turrets, damaging monitors and contributing during boss windows. A shotgun can be correct for a player assigned to a close lane, but decide that role in advance. If several players bring shotguns, the team may lack the precision damage needed for distant threats.

Encounter-by-encounter loadouts
Vosik, the Archpriest
Vosik-style damage rewards a heavy weapon that can deliver a concentrated burst while the team manages movement and cover. Sleeper Simulant is the high-ceiling choice when players can consistently land precision hits. Gjallarhorn or another legendary rocket is easier to use when the boss is moving, sight lines are short or precision shots are being disrupted. Keep the sniper for major enemies and monitors rather than spending all special ammunition on the boss.
- Primary: explosive hand cannon for Shanks, or an explosive high-impact scout when the room favors distance.
- Special: high-impact sniper for majors and monitors.
- Heavy: Sleeper Simulant for accurate burst; Gjallarhorn or a legendary rocket when movement makes precision unreliable.
- Subclass emphasis: Defender support for the damage setup, Nightstalker control for enemy waves and Stormcaller add clear.
The Siege Engine
The Siege Engine section mixes close-range Captains, crowds, turrets and the Devil Walker. Dark-Drinker is the standout tool for Captains and nearby groups because it gives a player immediate control at sword range. Rockets or a machine gun can cover crowds, while snipers remain valuable for turrets and the Devil Walker. Assign those jobs explicitly so the sword user is not also expected to solve every distant target.
- Primary: explosive hand cannon for enemies entering a lane, or scout rifle for open sight lines.
- Special: sniper for turrets, the Devil Walker and major targets.
- Heavy: Dark-Drinker for Captains and close groups; rockets or a machine gun for crowd coverage.
- Subclass emphasis: Nightstalker tether helps stabilize crowded routes, while Stormcaller handles clustered adds.
Aksis, Archon Prime
Aksis demands movement, target control and short damage opportunities. The Heroic-oriented recommendation favors Dark-Drinker for Captains and teleport damage windows, with Razelighter as a secondary sword option. Bring enough sniper coverage to remove majors before they disrupt a teleport rotation, and reserve heavy ammunition for the windows your team has actually reached rather than firing it during a chaotic transition.

- Wield incredible power as a Guardian of the last city on Earth to defeat the planet's enemies
- Combines cooperative, competitive, and public gameplay into an expansive online world
- Personalise and upgrade every aspect of how you look and fight with many customisations
- Primary: explosive hand cannon or high-impact scout for Vandals and Shanks.
- Special: high-impact sniper for majors and precision targets.
- Heavy: Dark-Drinker as the preferred close-range and Captain-control choice; Razelighter as an alternative.
- Subclass emphasis: Nightstalker invisibility supports dangerous movement, Defender provides a controlled damage platform and Stormcaller clears the lanes around teleport rotations.
Armor, Light and survivability
There is no single mandatory Wrath of the Machine armor set for clearing the raid. Prioritize survivability and recovery-oriented investment, especially while learning mechanics. Staying alive through an add wave preserves heavy ammunition, keeps buffs active and prevents a failed rotation; that practical value outweighs a small offensive gain that only appears when everything goes perfectly.

Spliced/Heroic armor is listed around 380–400 Defense. These are reward ranges associated with the 2016 raid, not universal modern armor statistics. Use the highest usable pieces available to you, but do not delay a clear because one slot is not a perfect set piece.
Cosmetic set rewards
Completing a full normal armor set unlocks its corresponding cosmetic shader reward, and completing a full Heroic set unlocks the Heroic shader reward. Mixing normal and Heroic pieces does not satisfy the full-set requirement. If the shader is your goal, track each slot separately instead of dismantling a duplicate before checking which piece is missing.
Practical armor checklist
- Reach the mode’s historical Light recommendation: 370 for normal or 380 for Heroic.
- Favor recovery and enough durability to survive the encounter’s expected damage.
- Keep a movement-oriented setup for runners only after your defensive baseline is reliable.
- Carry a second loadout with the same survivability but a different heavy weapon so you can switch between precision burst and close-range control.
A six-player loadout blueprint
The following arrangement is a starting framework, not a rigid roster requirement:
| Player role | Subclass | Primary and special | Heavy focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support anchor | Defender Titan | Explosive hand cannon and sniper | Sleeper Simulant or rocket for Vosik; sword when the encounter calls for close control. |
| Control hunter | Nightstalker | Explosive scout and sniper | Dark-Drinker for Captains or rockets for safer distance. |
| Add-clear warlock | Stormcaller | Hand cannon or scout and sniper | Machine gun or rockets for crowds. |
| Second hunter | Nightstalker or Gunslinger | Match the team’s missing range | Use Gunslinger/Celestial Nighthawk only when tether coverage is sufficient. |
| Close-lane guard | Sunbreaker, Defender or Stormcaller | Primary plus fast shotgun if assigned | Dark-Drinker or another close-control option. |
| Flexible damage player | Any covered role | High-impact sniper is preferred | Swap Sleeper, rockets or sword according to the encounter. |
The important rule is coverage: retain enough snipers for turrets and majors, enough add clear for crowded lanes and enough heavy burst for the boss window. Duplicate subclasses are fine when they solve a real team problem.

Common loadout mistakes and fixes
Bringing only close-range weapons
Shotguns and swords can feel powerful until a turret, monitor or distant major controls the room. Keep at least several high-impact snipers in the fireteam and assign who handles long-range targets.
Using Sleeper for every damage situation
Sleeper Simulant has excellent theoretical damage, but a moving target and broken sight line reduce that advantage. Switch to Gjallarhorn or a legendary rocket when the team cannot reliably land precision hits.
Stacking damage subclasses and ignoring support
Replacing every Defender, Nightstalker or Stormcaller with a personal burst option can make add waves and revives much harder. Start with support coverage, then substitute a Gunslinger or Sunbreaker where the team demonstrably has surplus control.
Chasing armor instead of learning mechanics
Raid and Spliced armor are progression rewards, not prerequisites for understanding the encounters. Use survivable pieces, practice rotations and pursue the cosmetic full-set requirement separately from your first clear.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Rewards worth planning around
Wrath of the Machine’s long-term reward chase includes the exotic pulse rifle Outbreak Prime and a set of SIVA-themed legendary weapons. The named raid weapons are Chaos Dogma, Genesis Chain, Steel Medulla, Fever and Remedy, Ex Machina, Quantiplasm, Ether Nova, Zeal Vector, Sound and Fury, and If Materia.
Ex Machina is associated with Heroic/Vosik rewards in the listed reward table, while several other weapons can be earned in both modes. That makes Ex Machina a particularly relevant target for players who want to improve the sniper slot used throughout the raid. Plan farming around the weapon’s listed mode rather than assuming every drop is available everywhere.
For a first clear, choose the loadout that keeps the team alive and completes the mechanics. Once the roster is consistent, target the raid weapons and the full normal or Heroic armor set without weakening the roles that made the clear reliable.
