WoW Group Travel and Dungeon Access: Frequently Asked Questions (2026 Guide)

Yes, Alliance and Horde characters can play together in many organized World of Warcraft groups, but not in every queue. Blizzard’s cross-faction rules distinguish between premade groups, which can usually include both factions, and random matchmade activities, which can remain faction-limited. Party Sync helps friends align quest phases and levels; it does not automatically unlock every dungeon queue. Chromie Time controls which leveling dungeons Dungeon Finder searches, while Timewalking is a separate event queue with its own rotation.

The practical rule is simple: form a supported premade group when you need cross-faction players, use Party Sync for coordinated questing, select a shared or represented timeline for leveling dungeons, and verify the live client for patch-sensitive restrictions.

Can Alliance and Horde players group together?

Blizzard’s 9.2.5 patch notes introduced an opt-in form of cross-faction play for organized content. An Alliance character can invite a Horde character, and vice versa, when one of these social connections exists:

  • You are BattleTag friends.
  • You are Real ID friends.
  • You belong to the same cross-faction World of Warcraft Community.

Cross-faction premade listings for Mythic dungeons, raids, rated arenas, and rated battlegrounds can accept either faction. The leader may still restrict a listing to the same faction, so a listing that appears open to everyone is not guaranteed to admit an opposing-faction applicant.

Outside a supported instance, opposing-faction party members remain unfriendly in the game world. After entering a supported instance, they can assist one another, trade loot, and earn shared achievements as described in Blizzard’s May 2022 explanation of the system. That article explains the intended behavior, but it is older than the current client; a patch can change an individual activity.

What remains faction-limited?

Single-faction guilds were retained under the 9.2.5 rules. Random matchmade activities also remain separate by faction in the cited notes. The notes specifically name Heroic dungeons, Skirmishes, and Random Battlegrounds as examples. Therefore, inviting a friend from the other faction to a premade dungeon group is not the same as entering a random queue together.

Activity or feature Cross-faction status in Blizzard’s cited rules What to do
Premade Mythic dungeon listing Open to both factions unless the leader applies a same-faction restriction Create or join the listing and check its applicant settings
Premade raid listing Open to both factions, subject to the leader’s restriction Use Group Finder rather than a random queue
Rated arena or rated battleground premade Open to both factions in the cited 9.2.5 notes Confirm the current season’s eligibility in the client
Random Heroic dungeon Same-faction matchmade activity in the cited notes Use a same-faction queue or assemble a premade group
Skirmish or Random Battleground Same-faction matchmade activity in the cited notes Do not assume a cross-faction friend can queue with you
Guild membership Single-faction guilds were retained Use a cross-faction Community or premade listing for mixed groups

How do I invite a friend from the other faction?

  1. Add the player as a BattleTag or Real ID friend, or make sure both of you belong to the same cross-faction World of Warcraft Community.
  2. Open your social or friends interface and send the group invite to that character or account.
  3. Confirm that the intended activity supports premade cross-faction play. Mythic dungeons, raids, and rated arena or rated battleground groups are the clearest examples in Blizzard’s 9.2.5 notes.
  4. If you are using Group Finder, read the listing’s restrictions. A leader can limit applicants to the same faction.
  5. Enter the supported instance. The opposing-faction relationship is still hostile or unfriendly in ordinary outdoor areas, but the supported instance enables cooperation under the cross-faction rules.

If the invite fails, check the social connection first. A character who is merely on your server, in your guild, or visible in the open world does not automatically qualify for a direct opposite-faction invitation under the cited rules.

Which instances are not cross-faction?

Blizzard’s 9.2.5 notes list the following instances as unavailable to cross-faction parties:

  • Trial of the Champion
  • Trial of the Crusader
  • Vault of Archavon
  • Icecrown Citadel
  • Baradin Hold
  • Siege of Boralus
  • Battle of Dazar’alor
  • Darkmaul Citadel, the Exile’s Reach dungeon

This is the exclusion list in those notes, not a promise that it is an exhaustive, permanent list for every later patch. If a specific legacy raid or dungeon refuses a mixed-faction group, treat the live client and the latest Blizzard patch notes as authoritative rather than assuming that every older instance follows the same rule.

Does Party Sync let different-level players enter dungeons together?

Party Sync is primarily a questing and group-leveling feature. Blizzard’s 2019 feature preview describes it as aligning a party’s quest state and phase so friends can work through compatible content together. Eligible quests can be replayed for level-appropriate rewards, while repeatable quests such as daily quests and World Quests are excluded from that replay system.

When Party Sync adjusts a character, it temporarily scales that character’s stats and limits available abilities to match the adjusted level. This keeps the group’s quest experience coherent, but it is not a blanket declaration that every dungeon finder or random queue becomes available to every party member.

How to use Party Sync

  1. Invite the players who will quest together into one party.
  2. Open the party or social interface and choose the Party Sync option.
  3. Review the quests and phase information the interface marks as synchronized.
  4. Accept the synchronization and let the game apply temporary level, stat, and ability adjustments.
  5. Complete the eligible quests together, then disable Party Sync when you want each character’s normal level and ability set restored.

The exact eligible quest list and current interface wording can change. Use Party Sync to solve phase or quest-state mismatches; do not use it as evidence that an otherwise unavailable random dungeon queue will accept the party.

Can players in different Chromie Time timelines queue together?

Blizzard’s Chromie Time guide says Dungeon Finder offers dungeons from the timeline selected by the player. When party members have selected different timelines, the party can queue for dungeons from any timeline represented in that party. If the selected-timeline search takes too long, the system may offer to broaden the search to other timelines.

  • Enter a world divided
  • Recruit Allied races
  • Plunder Uncharted islands
  • Storm the warfronts
  • Includes level 110 character Boost

This makes timeline selection different from faction rules. Chromie Time determines which leveling-era dungeon pool the finder searches; it does not convert a same-faction random activity into a cross-faction one.

Practical timeline procedure

  1. Have every player choose the desired Chromie Time timeline, or leave each character on their current timeline if the group wants the game to use all represented timelines.
  2. Open Dungeon Finder and select the leveling-dungeon category available to your characters.
  3. Queue as a party. The finder can use the timelines represented by party members, subject to the current client’s level and eligibility rules.
  4. If the wait is long, read the prompt before accepting a broadened search. It may add other timeline pools and therefore change which dungeons can appear.

The original Chromie Time guide includes historical level thresholds and onboarding details. Those thresholds are not reproduced here as current requirements because they can change with expansions and patches. Check the live character and queue tooltips for your level, expansion, and account status.

How do I queue for Timewalking?

Blizzard’s July 2026 Turbulent Timeways article gives this menu path:

Best Value
World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria - PC/Mac - (Obsolete)
  • Master the Path of the Monk - Learn the mystic powers of the Monk, World of Warcraft's newest playable class. Destroy foes with the Windwalker's devastating attacks, replenish allies with the Mistweaver's spiritual energies, and shrug off enormous damage with the Brewmaster's unyielding strength.
  • Battle to level 90 - Ascend to new heights of power as you explore the verdant reaches of the Jade Forest, war with the terrible Yaungol on Kun-Lai Summit, and unlock the secrets of the Mogu'shan Vaults.
  • Unleash the Mighty Pandaren - Set out as a member of the enigmatic Pandaren -- World of Warcraft's first neutral race -- and join the ranks of either the Horde or Alliance as you enter the conflict brewing on Pandaria's shores.
  • Discover a Lost Continent - Explore the ancient kingdoms of Pandaria and mount your defense against a newly awakened evil stirring in the continent's dark corners.
  1. Open Group Finder by pressing the default I hotkey, or open it from the game menu.
  2. Choose Dungeon Finder.
  3. Open the Type dropdown and select Timewalking.
  4. Choose Find Group.

Timewalking scales enemies and loot to the player’s level. Blizzard’s article also describes possible Heroic-level item drops and reputation rewards. The expansion and dungeon rotation in that article was specifically for July 2026; it had expired by October 2026, so it should not be treated as the active rotation. The menu path is useful, but the currently available Timewalking event must be read from the live client or a current Blizzard announcement.

Why Timewalking is not the same as Chromie Time

Feature Purpose How availability is determined
Chromie Time Chooses a leveling-era timeline and its associated Dungeon Finder pool Selected timelines represented by the party, plus any search expansion offered by the finder
Timewalking Runs a rotating legacy expansion event with scaled enemies and rewards Whether the event is active and which expansion is in the current rotation
Party Sync Aligns quest state and phase and temporarily scales party members Quest eligibility and the current Party Sync implementation
Cross-faction premade Allows organized groups to include Alliance and Horde characters Social connection, supported instance, and listing restrictions

Why can a friend join my premade but not my random queue?

The two group types use different matchmaking rules. A premade group is assembled by players and can use the cross-faction permissions described in the 9.2.5 notes. A random queue is assembled automatically and can retain same-faction restrictions even when a premade group for a similar instance is cross-faction.

For example, you may invite a Horde friend to a premade Mythic dungeon listing, yet be unable to place that same friend into a random Heroic dungeon queue. That is an intentional distinction, not necessarily an account or character error.

Troubleshooting group and dungeon access

The invite button is unavailable

  • Verify BattleTag or Real ID friendship, or confirm membership in the same cross-faction Community.
  • Check that you are inviting the correct character and that neither account is offline or otherwise unavailable.
  • Try forming the group through a supported premade listing instead of a random queue.

The mixed group enters the world but cannot cooperate

  • Move into the supported instance; outdoor faction hostility still applies.
  • Check whether the instance is one of the exclusions listed in Blizzard’s 9.2.5 notes.
  • Leave and reform the party after changing the listing or activity type.

The dungeon list is empty or shows the wrong expansion

  • Review each member’s Chromie Time selection.
  • Queue from Dungeon Finder rather than the Timewalking category, or vice versa, depending on the intended activity.
  • Accept a broadened timeline search only if the group is comfortable with additional dungeon pools.
  • Read the live tooltips for current level and character eligibility; historical guide thresholds may no longer apply.

Party Sync changed my abilities

That behavior is expected when Party Sync applies temporary scaling. Disable synchronization when you are finished questing together and need your normal level, stats, and ability set.

A quick decision guide

Your goal Use this Important limitation
Play an organized Mythic dungeon with an opposite-faction friend BattleTag, Real ID, or cross-faction Community plus a premade listing The leader may restrict applicants, and individual instances can be excluded
Run a random Heroic dungeon with an opposite-faction friend Check the live queue rules; the cited notes keep random Heroic matchmaking same-faction Premade permissions do not automatically carry over
Quest together despite different phases or levels Party Sync Only eligible quests synchronize; it does not guarantee dungeon access
Choose older leveling dungeons Chromie Time and Dungeon Finder Different party timelines can broaden the available pool, and current thresholds may differ from older guides
Run a rotating legacy event Group Finder → Dungeon Finder → Timewalking → Find Group The event and expansion rotation changes; July 2026 details are not an October schedule

What to verify before you invite everyone

  • Are the players connected through BattleTag, Real ID, or a cross-faction Community?
  • Is the activity premade or randomly matchmade?
  • Does the listing impose a same-faction restriction?
  • Is the dungeon on the cited legacy exclusion list?
  • Are Party Sync and Chromie Time being used for the problem they actually solve: quest state and timeline selection?
  • Is Timewalking currently active, and which expansion does the live rotation show?

These checks prevent the most common access mistake: assuming that one successful cross-faction activity proves every dungeon, queue, timeline, and legacy instance follows the same rule. Blizzard’s feature announcements establish the framework, while the current client determines patch-sensitive eligibility.
