WoW Gold Safety FAQ: Safe Trading, Reporting Scams, Missing Gold, and Account Recovery

Short answer: Treat ordinary in-game trades and the Auction House as safer than any deal involving real money, unsolicited gold, or a stranger asking you to move the transaction outside WoW. Blizzard says it does not restore gold or items lost in a scam, although a verified report can lead to action against the reported account. If gold is missing from every character, follow Blizzard’s account-recovery process because that pattern can indicate a compromised account.

This guide separates Modern WoW, Classic modes, and WoW: Forever so you can identify which rule applies before trading or reporting a loss.

Which WoW gold transactions are safe?

The safest choices are Blizzard’s own in-game systems: normal player-to-player trades, the in-game Auction House, and the WoW Token where that mode and account are eligible. No transaction is risk-free, so verify the recipient, item, quantity, and price before confirming.

Transaction Blizzard’s position Main risk or condition
Normal in-game trade with a known player Supported when it follows the rules for that game version. Scammers can use misleading names, rushed requests, or a last-second change in the trade window.
Auction House purchase or sale Supported in the relevant game mode. Double-check the listing price and item quality; an expensive mistake is not automatically reversible.
WoW Token Sanctioned exchange where available. Availability, redemption options, and purchase limits depend on region, account eligibility, and mode.
Gold for real money through a third party Forbidden under Blizzard’s stated policy. Possible account theft, removal of gold, suspension, or permanent closure.
Unsolicited gold or delivery by a different character Warning signs identified by Blizzard. The transfer may be connected to deceptive or illicit activity; do not spend or forward it until you understand its source.

Blizzard’s July 30, 2025 warning says, “The only safe way to purchase gold is via the WoW Token, which provides a convenient and sanctioned exchange of gold for game time or Battle.net Balance directly through the in-game Auction House.” That statement is a policy description, not a guarantee that every ordinary trade is harmless. Read the current Token rules before buying because eligible modes and account requirements change.

Blizzard also says employees will never ask you for gold or items. Do not buy game codes or item codes with in-game currency, and do not give guild-bank permissions, gold, or valuable items to someone you do not trust. See Blizzard’s Trade Scams guidance.

How Blizzard defines a trade scam

Blizzard describes a scam as obtaining another player’s items or possessions through misinformation, confusion, or fraud. Examples include promising an item and taking payment without delivering it, changing the agreed amount at the last moment, or using a misleading identity to obtain access to a guild bank.

  • Confirmed scammers may face suspension or account closure.
  • Blizzard says it does not restore gold or items lost in a scam.
  • A report can still help Blizzard investigate and take appropriate action if it verifies the conduct.
  • There is no promised reimbursement, investigation result, or response time.

Keep screenshots, chat logs, item links, character names, realm information, and approximate times. Those details help explain what was agreed and what actually happened, but they do not create an entitlement to replacement gold.

How to complete a legitimate trade more safely

  1. Keep the deal in WoW. Use in-game chat and the normal trade window or Auction House. Refuse requests to continue through an external messenger, send payment first and “trust” the other player, or use a different character for delivery without a clear reason.
  2. Confirm the counterparty. For a crafting or profession order, verify the character name, realm, item, materials, commission, and delivery character before handing over anything. Blizzard recommends accepting gold from known players or through agreements made in in-game chat.
  3. Inspect the trade window. Check the exact item, stack size, quality, and gold amount after the other player has finished making changes. A last-second substitution is a common form of confusion.
  4. Use the Auction House carefully. Check the unit price, total price, and item version. Blizzard specifically advises double-checking Auction House prices.
  5. Protect shared assets. Do not grant guild-bank access to an untrusted player. Use the minimum permissions needed for a genuine guild role.
  6. Decline unusual currency exchanges. A request to buy a game code, item code, or account service with gold is outside a normal supported trade and can expose both accounts to disputes or enforcement.

What to do if you were scammed

Report the player promptly

Use Blizzard’s in-game reporting route for the character or account involved and provide the relevant facts: names, realm, items or gold, the agreed terms, chat evidence, and when the exchange occurred. The exact report-screen labels can differ by region and game mode, so follow the current prompts shown in your client or support site. Blizzard’s Trade Scams page explains the policy.

Set realistic expectations

Blizzard states that it does not restore scam losses, even when it investigates. A verified report may result in action against the reported account, but you should not promise yourself a refund, a specific penalty, or a response deadline. Do not retaliate, threaten the other player, or publish personal information; preserve evidence and let Blizzard handle the report.

Secure your account if anything looks unusual

If the scam involved an unfamiliar login, an addon installation, a password request, or gold disappearing elsewhere, stop trading and move to the account-compromise steps below. A scam and a compromised account can occur together.

Why is my gold missing from one character?

A shortfall on one character often has an ordinary explanation. Blizzard’s Missing Gold in World of Warcraft checklist recommends checking these sources before assuming theft:

Check What to verify
Auction House Recent purchases, expired-listing fees, and an item bought at a higher price than intended.
Vendor purchases Mounts, gear, recipes, cosmetic items, and other expensive purchases made recently.
Mail Gold or items sent to another character, a friend, or a guildmate; check every character and mailbox.
Guild bank Deposits or withdrawals, including a mistaken transfer from the character you are checking.
WoW Token A Token purchase can consume gold even when you expected to buy game time or Battle.net Balance.
Addon display Disable or update addons temporarily and compare the displayed balance with the game’s native character and currency screens.

Write down the character, approximate previous balance, current balance, and the last time you know the amount was correct. That timeline makes it easier to distinguish a purchase or transfer from an unauthorized change.

What if every character has lost gold?

Gold missing across all characters is more concerning than a shortfall on one character. Blizzard says that pattern might indicate a compromised account. Do not keep logging in repeatedly, sending more items, or installing “recovery” software offered by another player.

Use Blizzard’s account-recovery route

  1. Open Blizzard’s Account Hacked guidance from a device you trust and start the account-recovery process.
  2. Change the Battle.net password to a unique password that you have not used elsewhere. If you cannot sign in, use Blizzard’s recovery options rather than a link supplied in chat or email.
  3. Review account contact details, authenticator or security settings, connected accounts, characters, mail, guild-bank activity, and recent transactions after access is restored.
  4. Run a reputable security scan on the computer. Blizzard specifically warns that malicious addons and executable files disguised as addon installations can steal credentials.
  5. Remove suspicious addons and reinstall them only from trusted sources. Blizzard advises avoiding executable files in addon installations.
  6. Do not log in on someone else’s computer, and do not share credentials. Phishing pages that imitate Blizzard, gold sellers, leveling services, and account sharing are all identified risks.

If an addon infection is suspected, scan the device and change the password after the scan. A clean account on an infected computer can be compromised again.

WoW Token rules by game mode

The Token is Blizzard’s sanctioned way to exchange eligible game time or Battle.net Balance for in-game gold, but it is not universal across every WoW version.

Mode Token availability stated by Blizzard How redemption works
World of Warcraft Available, subject to region and account eligibility. A Token bought through Blizzard’s shop can be listed on the in-game Auction House for gold. A Token bought with gold can be redeemed for game time or, where eligible, Battle.net Balance.
WoW Classic Progression Available, subject to eligibility. The same shop-to-Auction-House and gold-to-reward model applies where Blizzard enables it.
WoW Classic Era Unavailable. No Token exchange in this mode.
WoW Classic Hardcore Unavailable. No Token exchange in this mode.
Season of Discovery Unavailable. No Token exchange in this mode.

Blizzard’s Using a WoW Token article also lists a minimum prior paid-game-time condition, inventory and weekly purchase caps, region and account restrictions, and exclusions for some limited-time modes. These requirements are volatile; check that live support article immediately before purchasing. Do not rely on a Token price quoted in an old guide.

Game-version and faction boundaries matter

Do not assume that a trade allowed in Modern WoW is allowed in Classic. Blizzard support guidance reproduced in an April 2025 forum discussion says trades between WoW Classic realms or factions, and trades between Modern WoW and Classic, are prohibited and can incur penalties up to account closure. Supported cross-faction and cross-realm trades inside Modern WoW are different: those are allowed when performed through the game’s supported systems.

Trying to bypass a restriction through the Auction House, multiple accounts, or a chain of characters does not turn an unsupported swap into a supported trade. Before moving gold, identify the exact version, realm type, and faction involved. The policy discussion is available at Blizzard’s gold-policy forum post.

Real-money trading and WoW: Forever enforcement

Blizzard’s July 30, 2025 warning says buying gold from other players for real money can lead to account hacking, removal of gold, or permanent suspension. It identifies automated bots, unsolicited gold, requests to trade outside in-game chat, and delivery by a different character from the one that arranged the deal as warning signs.

There is also a version-specific enforcement statement for WoW: Forever. In an October 1, 2026 forum post about the WoW: Forever Beta and its live launch, Blizzard community representative Kaivax wrote: “Our stance on RMT in World of Warcraft is crystal clear: any account belonging to any player that is found to have participated in generating, selling, buying, or receiving illicit gold is subject to the gold being removed, account suspensions, or permanent account closures.” This statement is expressly scoped to WoW: Forever and does not, by itself, announce a new universal rule for every WoW variant. Read the post at Blizzard’s WoW: Forever enforcement announcement.

A quick decision checklist before you accept gold

  • Is the transaction entirely inside Blizzard’s supported game systems?
  • Do you know the other player, or did the gold arrive unsolicited?
  • Are both players in the same permitted game version, realm, and faction arrangement?
  • Is the exchange for in-game goods, rather than real-world money or a code?
  • Have you checked whether this is a one-character accounting issue or an all-character security issue?
  • Have you inspected the final trade window and retained the chat record?

If any answer raises doubt, cancel the transaction. A few minutes spent verifying the mode, recipient, and amount is safer than assuming Blizzard can reverse a loss later.
