WoW: Forever is described as retaining Classic World of Warcraft’s slower, more deliberate combat, in contrast with modern WoW’s faster pace. Its director, Ion Hazzikostas, says that difference lets the games appeal to different kinds of fans. That supports a case for slower-paced play—but it does not establish a broad, measurable longing among MMO players, and the headline’s quoted wording is not verified by the available interview.
What the developer said about WoW: Forever’s pace
In a Men’s Journal interview syndicated by Yahoo Tech, World of Warcraft director Ion Hazzikostas describes Forever’s combat as retaining the slower, more deliberate feel of Classic WoW. He calls it “a bit more tactical” and contrasts it with the much faster pace of modern WoW.

That is a comparison about combat. It does not establish that every part of Forever is slower, nor that players as a whole want the same pace. Hazzikostas’s broader point is that the two versions can appeal to different kinds of fans: a slower combat style need not replace a faster one to have a place in the franchise.
Does that prove there is a real longing for slower MMOs?
No—not on its own. The interview offers a developer’s view of how the two games differ and whom they may appeal to. It does not provide survey results, player numbers, or other evidence measuring demand across MMO players.

The exact headline wording about “a real longing” and a “go go go nature” is not confirmed in the located interview excerpt. The excerpt supports the slower-combat comparison, but it is not enough to attribute those phrases to Hazzikostas as a direct quotation. The claim should therefore be treated as an unverified headline characterization, not a documented statistic or confirmed quote.
What players say they value about a slower pace
In a September 18, 2026 discussion on the Blizzard WoW forums, participants describe the slower pace as leaving more room to read quest text, travel through the world, and interact with other players. Those comments help explain why some players find deliberate play appealing: the time between fights can be part of the experience rather than an obstacle to get through.

Forum posts are personal impressions, not a representative survey. They show that some players value these aspects; they cannot establish how common that preference is across the wider MMO audience.

Combat speed changes what a player is asked to notice and do. A deliberate fight can leave more space for tactical decisions; a faster one can emphasize rapid reactions and momentum. Neither description, by itself, makes one approach better for every player.

A secondary MMO-Champion recap of the BlizzCon 2026 Forever panel also characterizes the design as preserving deliberate, tactical combat. That supports the general description, but it is a recap rather than an official transcript and does not measure player demand.
