Your character’s unlocks, faction, destination, progression and the current patch determine which option actually works.
The practical choice is therefore a route decision, not a permanent preference. Check destination coverage first, then choose between direct control, an automated ride or a hub jump.

No cited official source supplies a controlled comparison of travel times. It would therefore be misleading to call one method “the fastest” in every situation. Compare the available connection, the detour to the hub, your unlocks and whether you want to pilot the trip or let the game fly it.

Flying mounts: the flexible option
A flying mount is usually the most adaptable choice inside a flyable area. You pick the takeoff point, change direction at any time and can stop at a quest objective, gathering node or other landmark without waiting for a network connection. That freedom is valuable when the destination is not a city, when you need to avoid a long route through intermediate points or when your objective changes while traveling.

Skyriding and Steady Flight
Blizzard’s War Within launch guidance says the mount collection lets players switch between Skyriding, previously called dynamic flight, and Steady Flight, the style introduced with The Burning Crusade. The setting is global to the active flying style, so the mount you select and the mode you have enabled both matter.
Many flying mounts can use Skyriding in areas where flying is permitted. A mount without Skyriding support remains grounded while Skyriding is active; that does not mean the mount is permanently unusable. If the same mount supports Steady Flight and the area allows that mode, changing the flight style can make it available again.
How Skyriding movement works
A 2025 returning-player guide describes Skyriding as using six shared charges for Surge Forward and Skyward Ascent. The guide also says Skyriding no longer depends on a Vigor fuel gauge. Charges are a movement resource for the active flight system, not a measurement that proves one travel method is quicker than another. Patch changes can alter these mechanics, so read the current tooltips in your game before planning around a specific ability.
Mount compatibility checks
The same guide says most flying mounts support Skyriding but identifies exceptions, including the Otterworldly Ottuk Carrier, some fish mounts and brooms. Treat those as examples rather than a complete exclusion list. To check a mount before leaving:
- Open the mount collection.
- Select the mount you intend to use.
- Look for its current Skyriding or Steady Flight support label.
- Confirm that the destination zone permits the flight style you selected.
- If the mount is grounded, try a compatible mount or switch flight styles when the area supports that option.
Ground mounts are not converted into Skyriding mounts by changing the setting. They remain ground-only, so keep a ground option available for areas where no flying is allowed.

When a mount is the better decision
- The destination is off the network: A quest camp, cave entrance or remote objective may have no flight-master connection or portal.
- You need to make several stops: Direct control avoids returning to a hub after every objective.
- You already stand near the destination: A portal-room detour can take longer in practice than simply mounting up.
- You are exploring: You can discover flight masters and other points while traveling rather than waiting for a known route.
- You need to react: Mount movement lets you turn toward a changed quest marker, group member or event immediately.
Where a mount is not the answer
A mount cannot bypass an area’s flight restrictions. It also cannot compensate for a mount that lacks the active flight-style support. If you are in a city with a useful portal, or you need to cross several regions and have no direct flying access, a hub connection may be more practical. Choose the mount after checking those constraints rather than assuming every flying mount behaves identically.
Flight paths: reliable, automated connections
Flight paths connect flight-master locations. Blizzard’s travel overview describes the basic pattern: find a flight master, learn routes as you explore, and then use those learned connections for point-to-point air travel. The system is deliberately network-based; it does not send you to arbitrary quest coordinates.

- Travel to a settlement or hub that has a flight master.
- Interact with the flight master and learn the route when the option is offered.
- Repeat this at other locations you expect to use.
- When you need to travel, open a flight master’s destination list and select a learned point.
The route has to be available to that character. Finding a location on another character, or seeing a destination mentioned in a guide, does not prove that your current character has unlocked it.
Why players choose a flight path
- Hands-off travel: Once the route starts, the game handles the ride while you manage inventory, chat or planning.
- Predictable endpoints: You arrive at a known flight-master location rather than navigating manually.
- Useful fallback: It works when flying is restricted, provided both points are on your discovered network.
- Low navigation effort: You do not need to steer around terrain or search for a landing approach.
Flight-path limitations
A flight path is only as useful as the network you have discovered. If the destination has no flight master, or you have not learned that connection, you must first travel by another method. The path may also end in a settlement some distance from the actual objective, leaving a final ground or flying leg.
An older Blizzard travel article includes historic riding-level tables. Those thresholds should not be treated as current requirements. Use the enduring mechanic—discover flight masters and use the routes they offer—while checking the live game for present-day level, training and expansion rules.

Portals: the long-distance shortcut when available
Portals can be the most direct practical choice for a distant region when a usable portal is installed in a hub you can reach. Stormwind and Orgrimmar have portal rooms, and Blizzard has described those rooms as connecting players with distant locations. A portal removes the intervening travel network, but only if the right destination is currently represented and your character can use it.
How to use a portal room
- Travel to your faction’s current portal hub.
- Inspect every portal and read the destination label rather than relying on memory.
- Check whether the destination is the region, city or expansion hub nearest your objective.
- Use the portal, then complete the final ground, flying or flight-path leg.
Portal layouts and destinations are not permanent. The often-cited Blizzard portal post dates from 2019, so its destination list is historical rather than an exhaustive directory for the current game. Quest or progression eligibility can also affect whether a portal appears or works for a particular character. Inspect the live room each time a route matters.
When a portal wins
- Cross-region travel: A single jump can avoid multiple flight-path connections.
- You are already near the hub: The portal is convenient when the room is closer than a flight master or the destination is several regions away.
- The destination has a known gateway: If the portal drops you in the correct expansion hub, the remaining leg is short and clear.
When a portal loses
A portal is not useful if you must make a long detour to reach the room, if no portal to the required region is present, or if the destination is a remote objective far from the landing point. In those cases, a flight path or mount can be simpler. Do not assume that a portal shown in an old guide still exists in the same room.

This table is a decision aid, not a speed ranking. The available connection and your starting position can reverse the result from one trip to the next.

- Identify the real endpoint. Write down the zone, settlement or quest marker you need, not merely the expansion name. A portal to an expansion hub may still leave a substantial local trip.
- Check your current position. If you are already in the correct zone, mounting up is often the least complicated choice. If you are in a capital, inspect the portal room before opening the flight map.
- Check access. Confirm that your character can enter the destination, that flying is permitted there, and that any relevant quest or progression gate is complete.
- Look for a direct portal. In the current faction portal room, read the labels and select a destination that genuinely shortens the route.
- Open the flight-master list. If no useful portal exists, see whether the destination or its nearest settlement is a learned flight-path endpoint.
- Choose the final leg. After a portal or flight path, use a compatible mount for the remaining distance, or a ground mount if flying is unavailable.
- Recheck after a patch. Portal rooms, mount support and travel networks can change. If a familiar option disappears, inspect the live labels rather than following an old route from memory.
Unlocks, boosts and character-specific state
Travel access is not necessarily universal across an account or across every expansion. The current character’s discoveries, quests, faction and progression can determine which flight paths, waygates and portals appear.
Blizzard’s 2024 Enhanced Level 70 Character Boost feature list provides a concrete example: it included all Dragon Isles Travel Network waygates and flight paths unlocked. That example shows why a boosted character may have a different travel menu from a character that earned routes by exploration. It does not establish the requirements for every travel system in the game.
When two characters show different options, compare their actual unlock state instead of assuming a bug. Check the destination on the map, speak to a flight master on each character and inspect the relevant portal hub. If one character has a progression prerequisite completed, the other may need that quest or campaign step before the connection appears.
Troubleshooting common travel problems
“My flying mount is grounded.”
First check whether the zone permits flying. If it does, open the mount collection and verify that the selected mount supports the active flight style. A mount without Skyriding support is grounded while Skyriding is enabled; try a supported mount or switch to Steady Flight where that mode is allowed. A ground-only mount will remain grounded regardless of the setting.

“The destination is missing from the flight-master list.”
You may not have discovered that flight master, the destination may not be part of the current network, or the location may require progression. Travel to the region by another available method, find its flight master and learn the route if the game offers it. Do not rely on an old list of routes as proof that the connection should be present.
“The portal from a guide is not in the room.”
Portal inventories are subject to change, and the 2019 destination list is not a live directory. Read the labels in the current portal room. If the destination is absent, use the nearest available portal, a flight path or a mount route instead, and check whether a quest or character-specific requirement applies.
“I arrived at the hub but am still far from the objective.”
Portals and flight paths terminate at their named hubs, not necessarily at quest coordinates. Treat the connection as the long leg, then plan the final local leg with a flying or ground mount according to the zone’s rules. If the hub has a flight master, compare that short connection with manually navigating the rest of the way.
“A second character has more travel options.”
Compare discoveries and progression on the two characters. The Dragon Isles boost example demonstrates that a character can receive a bundle of travel unlocks, while another character may need to discover or earn them. The difference is not evidence that one travel method is globally better.

What not to assume
- Do not assume mounts are always fastest. No cited source provides comparative travel-time measurements, and a mount can be slower in practice if flying is restricted or the destination is across several regions.
- Do not assume every flying mount supports Skyriding. Compatibility varies, with the Otterworldly Ottuk Carrier, some fish mounts and brooms given as examples of exceptions.
- Do not treat old riding requirements as current. Historic level tables from an older travel article are not a present-day requirements list.
- Do not treat a 2019 portal inventory as exhaustive. Use the portal room’s current labels and account for progression eligibility.
- Do not assume an unlock is universal. Character-specific discoveries, faction and expansion progression affect the available network.
- Do not confuse an expansion hub with the final destination. Every method can leave a local leg after the main connection.
Bottom line: use a hybrid travel habit
For most characters, the strongest approach is to combine all three systems. Mount between nearby objectives and whenever you need route control. Learn flight paths as you explore so known settlements become dependable automated links. Check a faction portal room before a long cross-region journey, but verify its current destinations instead of trusting an old directory.
The best answer to “Which is best for getting around WoW?” is therefore conditional: mount for flexibility, flight path for a discovered automated connection, and portal for an available long-distance jump. Let the destination, unlock state and current in-game options decide the method for each trip.
