Cataclysm Classic comes immediately after Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Once you finish Cataclysm, the progression continues into Mists of Pandaria Classic. Cataclysm Classic launched on May 20, 2024, and Mists of Pandaria Classic launched on July 21, 2025. Blizzard’s official updates through December 2025 identify Mists of Pandaria Classic as the latest confirmed point in this progression sequence.
There is no published choice between Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria if you want to follow the intended Classic progression: play Cataclysm first, then move to Mists of Pandaria. The two expansions differ substantially in setting, level range, races, classes and systems, so the details below explain what to expect at each step.

The WoW Classic expansion order after Wrath
The post-Wrath path is linear. You do not skip directly from Wrath of the Lich King Classic to Mists of Pandaria Classic when following progression realms.
| Order | Expansion | Progression status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Original WoW Classic | Starting point of the Classic progression journey. |
| 2 | The Burning Crusade Classic | Follows Original WoW Classic. |
| 3 | Wrath of the Lich King Classic | The expansion immediately before Cataclysm. |
| 4 | Cataclysm Classic | Advanced from Wrath progression realms; launched May 20, 2024. |
| 5 | Mists of Pandaria Classic | Followed Cataclysm; launched July 21, 2025 and continued receiving progression content in December 2025. |
Blizzard announced the Wrath-to-Cataclysm transition on November 3, 2023. Its announcement said that “Classic progression realms will advance from Wrath Classic to Cataclysm Classic,” with changes informed by player feedback. The later launch notice confirms that the planned transition took place.

- Great product!
Official material available through the December 2025 update does not establish another expansion after Mists of Pandaria Classic. Treat Mists of Pandaria as the latest confirmed point, not as a promise that no later Classic release will ever be announced.
What Cataclysm Classic adds after Wrath
Cataclysm is the immediate next chapter because it changes the existing Azeroth before introducing the later Pandaria setting. Characters leaving Wrath content enter a reshaped version of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms rather than a completely separate continent.
Azeroth’s original continents are rebuilt
The expansion revises quest zones, landscapes and storylines across Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. Familiar routes can therefore look and play differently from their Wrath-era versions. If you are returning to an older character, do not assume that every pre-Cataclysm quest chain, flight path or zone objective is still arranged the same way.

Wrath’s level cap is replaced by Cataclysm’s 85 cap. The new zones, dungeons and raids are designed around that range, so the normal progression is to complete Cataclysm’s leveling content before concentrating on its endgame activities.
Two playable races join the roster
- Goblins: added as a playable race for the Horde.
- Worgen: added as a playable race for the Alliance.
These race additions are part of Cataclysm’s identity, but they do not create a separate branch in the expansion order. Existing characters can continue forward without rerolling.
Archaeology and transmogrification arrive
Cataclysm introduces Archaeology as a profession-style activity centered on surveying sites and recovering artifacts. It also adds transmogrification, allowing players to preserve the appearance of selected equipment while using the statistics of other eligible items. These systems affect collection and customization rather than changing the required route through the story.
New zones, dungeons and raids
Cataclysm includes its own leveling zones and endgame dungeons and raids. Blizzard’s launch material describes these as part of the expansion package; it does not establish a single mandatory dungeon sequence for every character. Your route can therefore vary according to questing, group availability and the content you prefer.

What follows Cataclysm: Mists of Pandaria Classic
After Cataclysm, the progression moves to Mists of Pandaria Classic. This expansion shifts the setting to Pandaria and raises the level cap again, while adding a new race and an entirely new class.
Pandaria becomes the next major setting
Mists of Pandaria opens Pandaria as a new region with its own zones, stories, dungeons and raids. The setting is distinct from Cataclysm’s rebuilt Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, so the expansion feels like a geographic and thematic change rather than another pass over the same leveling areas.
The level cap rises from 85 to 90
Characters advance through Mists of Pandaria content from level 85 to level 90. A character that has completed Cataclysm is positioned for this progression; there is no need to replay earlier Classic expansions to enter the Pandaria storyline.

Pandaren and monks are added
- Pandaren: a new playable race associated with the Pandaria setting.
- Monk: a new playable class introduced with the expansion.
These additions are optional character-creation choices. They do not replace the Cataclysm stage, and an existing level-85 character can continue into Pandaria normally.

Blizzard’s launch notice lists new zones, dungeons and raids for Mists of Pandaria Classic. A December 12, 2025 official weekly update confirms that the Thunder King content update was live. That update added or highlighted the Isle of Thunder, the Isle of Giants and the Throne of Thunder raid. The presence of this later update shows that Mists of Pandaria Classic was still receiving progression content after its initial launch.
Cataclysm versus Mists of Pandaria at a glance
These are sequential stages, not competing versions of the same endgame. The comparison is useful when deciding what kind of content you will encounter next.

How to continue from a Wrath character
If your goal is simply to keep one character moving through the Classic timeline, use this order.
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Finish or leave Wrath content at the appropriate point. You do not have to complete every optional achievement, collection or raid before advancing, but keep any character you want to progress on the active Classic progression path.
- Enter Cataclysm Classic. Treat the rebuilt Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms as the next leveling environment. Recheck quest hubs and travel routes because Cataclysm changed the original continents.
- Advance from level 80 toward 85. Use Cataclysm zones, dungeons and other available activities to reach the expansion’s level cap.
- Run Cataclysm endgame content if you want its dungeons and raids. These activities are optional for the purpose of reaching the next expansion, but they contain the expansion’s intended endgame progression.
- Move into Mists of Pandaria Classic. Once your character is ready beyond Cataclysm, begin Pandaria’s zones and level from 85 toward 90.
- Continue through later Pandaria updates. The Thunder King update and its associated islands and raid are part of the confirmed post-launch content described by Blizzard’s December 2025 update.
Starting a Goblin, Worgen, Pandaren or Monk is a separate choice. It can be useful if you want to experience a new race or class story, but it is not required to preserve your existing character’s place in the sequence.

Blizzard’s Mists of Pandaria Classic launch announcement states that access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. The cited official notices do not say that a physical retail copy is required to follow the progression.
Account and access policies can change. Before adding Game Time or troubleshooting eligibility, check the current account information and subscription terms shown by Blizzard for your region. What is confirmed after Mists of Pandaria?
As of the official information available through December 2025, Mists of Pandaria Classic is the latest confirmed progression stage in this sequence. Blizzard’s update confirms ongoing Pandaria content, including the Thunder King update, but the cited material does not announce a subsequent Classic expansion.

That distinction matters when planning a character. You can confidently plan the route through Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria. You should not present a later expansion as part of the confirmed order unless Blizzard publishes a new announcement.

Common mistakes when planning the transition
Skipping Cataclysm because Pandaria is newer
Mists of Pandaria is later chronologically, but it is not the immediate successor to Wrath. Cataclysm is the required next stage for a progression-minded player.
Assuming the old world is unchanged
Cataclysm’s central feature is the reshaping of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. Old route maps and quest memories may no longer match the live Cataclysm environment.
Rerolling when you only wanted the next expansion
New races and the Monk class are optional. Existing characters can continue through the level ranges without being replaced by a Goblin, Worgen, Pandaren or Monk.

The documented sequence ends at Mists of Pandaria Classic. Keep future planning separate from the confirmed order until an official announcement supplies a date and progression details.
Bottom line for “what comes after Wrath Classic?”
Play Cataclysm Classic first, then Mists of Pandaria Classic. Cataclysm takes characters from level 80 to 85 while rebuilding the original continents and adding Goblins, Worgen, Archaeology and transmogrification. Mists of Pandaria then raises the cap to 90, opens Pandaria, adds Pandaren and Monks, and has already received the Thunder King update. Mists of Pandaria is the latest confirmed point in the official Classic progression record currently available.
