Black holes are observed astronomical objects; wormholes are hypothetical structures allowed by some solutions to general relativity. A black hole has an event horizon, a boundary beyond which light cannot escape. Astronomers study black holes through their effects on nearby matter, stars and light, including accretion-disk radiation, gravitational lensing and gravitational waves. No wormhole has been observed, and NASA says there is no known way to create or keep one open.
That evidence gap is the central difference. A black hole is not an established tunnel to another place or universe, and a theoretical traversable wormhole is not a demonstrated method of travel.

The short answer: observed object versus theoretical connection
A black hole is a region where matter has been compressed so strongly that an event horizon forms. Once something crosses that horizon, light cannot get back out. The horizon is not a solid shell or a physical surface; it is a boundary in spacetime.
A wormhole is a proposed connection between two separated regions of spacetime. The idea appears in mathematical solutions of general relativity, but no wormhole has been detected. A wormhole model may be traversable on paper, yet there is no known process for building one or holding it open.

In practical terms, black holes belong to observational astronomy. Wormholes belong to theoretical physics. Similar words such as Einstein–Rosen bridge, black hole and traversable wormhole describe different concepts and should not be used as synonyms.
What is a black hole?
An event horizon, not a solid surface
The defining feature of a black hole is its event horizon. It marks the boundary beyond which no signal travelling at the speed of light can escape to the outside. Because the horizon is a boundary in spacetime, an astronaut would not hit a hard wall on crossing it. The important change is causal: after crossing, every future-directed path leads farther inward rather than back to the outside universe in the ordinary black-hole description.
Black holes themselves do not emit or reflect light. That does not make them invisible to science. Their gravity changes the motion of nearby stars, bends passing light and affects gas falling toward them. Those effects let astronomers identify and measure black holes even when the black hole is not directly shining.
How astronomers find them
Several independent observations provide evidence for black holes:
- Accretion-disk radiation: gas and dust spiralling toward a black hole can heat up and emit intense radiation before crossing the horizon.
- Stellar orbits: stars can orbit an unseen, extremely massive object. Their speeds and paths reveal the mass concentrated in a small region.
- Gravitational lensing: the black hole’s gravity bends light from objects behind it, producing measurable distortions.
- Gravitational waves: mergers of black holes send ripples through spacetime that detectors can record.
These measurements do not amount to a photograph of a black hole as though it were a glowing sphere. They are observations of the black hole’s environment and gravitational influence.
The M87* image and what it actually shows
In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope produced an image of the bright region around the supermassive black hole known as M87*. The dark central area is the black-hole shadow against emission from hot material and bent light around it. It is not a photograph of an event horizon as a material surface. The result is important because the observed shape and surrounding emission are consistent with the strong-gravity structure expected for a black hole.
Gravitational-wave observations provide a different kind of evidence. The first direct detection, announced from a 2015 black-hole merger, was followed by additional merger detections. The waveforms carry information about the orbiting masses and the final object, allowing researchers to test the predictions of general relativity in extreme conditions.

Examples of known black holes
NASA Science lists the black hole Gaia BH1 at about 1,500 light-years from Earth; that distance is stated on the NASA page accessed in 2026 and can change if later observations revise the record. At the centre of the Milky Way is Sagittarius A*, with a mass of about four million Suns, according to the same NASA Science material accessed in 2026. These figures describe observed astronomical systems, not hypothetical gateways.
What is a wormhole?
A proposed shortcut through spacetime
A wormhole is usually described as a throat joining two regions that would otherwise be far apart in spacetime. In a diagram, the geometry can look like a tunnel with two mouths. The mouths might be imagined as connecting distant locations in one universe, different times, or—depending on the mathematical construction—separate universes.
That picture is a description of a solution to equations, not an observed structure. NASA’s Cosmicopia FAQ says wormholes are permitted by the mathematics of general relativity but have never been observed. It also says that no known method can create or sustain one.
Traversable and non-traversable models
Not every mathematical wormhole would let a traveller pass through. A traversable wormhole must have a throat that remains open long enough for matter or information to cross and must avoid destructive horizons or singular conditions along the route. The details depend on the particular model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMany traversable proposals require so-called exotic matter or another source of stress-energy with unusual properties to prevent the throat from collapsing. The requirement is an assumption in the model, not a technology that scientists can currently produce in the needed form or quantity. A paper by Wei Hong, Jun Tao and Tong-Jie Zhang in Physical Review D (2021) examined how a modelled traversable wormhole could differ observationally from a black hole while making that exotic-matter assumption. Its calculations are theoretical; they are not a report of a detected wormhole.
Black holes and wormholes compared
| Question | Black hole | Wormhole |
|---|---|---|
| What is its status? | Astronomers observe effects attributed to black holes and study their surroundings. | A mathematical possibility in general relativity; no wormhole has been observed according to NASA’s FAQ. |
| What is the defining structure? | An event horizon, the boundary beyond which light cannot escape. | A hypothetical throat connecting separate regions of spacetime; whether it can be crossed depends on the model. |
| What evidence exists? | Accretion-disk emission, stellar motion, gravitational lensing and gravitational waves. | No confirmed astronomical detection. |
| Could it be used for travel? | Crossing an ordinary black-hole event horizon is not a route back out. | A traversable version is a theoretical idea, not a demonstrated transportation method. |
| Is it a portal? | No. A black hole is not an observed shortcut to another dimension or location. | It is often portrayed as a portal, but that interpretation remains speculative and unsupported by observation. |
Why a black hole is not automatically a wormhole
The confusion comes partly from the fact that both ideas arise in discussions of curved spacetime. A black hole’s gravity can be represented by solutions to Einstein’s equations, and some extended mathematical solutions contain bridge-like features. That mathematical relationship does not mean every black hole contains a usable tunnel.
NASA’s black-hole FAQ discusses idealized charged or rotating solutions that can contain structures described as “timelike wormholes.” These solutions rely on highly specific assumptions and do not represent a confirmed interior map of an astrophysical black hole. The FAQ also notes an infinite-blueshift problem: disturbances approaching the relevant region can be amplified without limit, potentially destabilising the putative wormhole. The result is a warning about the limits of the idealized solution, not evidence that real black holes are portals.

The term Einstein–Rosen bridge is therefore best treated carefully. It refers to a mathematical bridge associated with an idealized black-hole solution. It is not a synonym for a stable, traversable wormhole, and it does not show that an astronaut could enter one black hole and emerge somewhere else.
Can you travel through a black hole?
What crossing the horizon means
In the standard black-hole picture, crossing the event horizon does not open a return route. The horizon separates events that can still send light signals to the outside from events that cannot. Once a traveller has crossed it, turning around with an engine or following a different ordinary path cannot restore communication with the external universe.
This does not mean a black hole reaches out and pulls everything from any distance. Far from a black hole, its gravitational influence is like that of any other object with the same mass. A star, planet or spacecraft can orbit safely if its trajectory and distance are appropriate. The danger becomes unavoidable only after an object moves into the region where the black hole’s escape conditions apply.
What a black-hole image cannot prove
An artist’s illustration, a simulation or the M87* image can show expected geometry, glowing gas and a shadow. None shows a tunnel entrance or a second exit. The observations support the presence of a compact object with a horizon-like shadow and strong gravity; they do not provide evidence for travel to another universe.
Are wormholes real?
No wormhole has been observed. That statement is narrower and more accurate than saying that wormholes are impossible. General relativity permits mathematical solutions with wormhole-like geometry, so physicists can study their properties. But a mathematical solution is not automatically realised in nature.
For a wormhole to become a practical route, several additional conditions would have to be met: a throat would need to form, remain open, avoid a horizon that blocks passage, and survive disturbances caused by matter and radiation. Current physics provides no known way to arrange those conditions. The exotic-matter requirement in many traversable models is a major theoretical assumption rather than an available engineering resource.
Could observations distinguish a wormhole from a black hole?
In principle, yes: different spacetime geometries could alter the light, motion and gravitational waves produced near the compact object. Researchers can therefore calculate predictions for a modelled wormhole and compare them with black-hole predictions.

The 2021 study by Wei Hong, Jun Tao and Tong-Jie Zhang is an example of this approach. It investigates observational differences under a specified traversable-wormhole model supported by enough exotic matter. Such work helps define what future measurements might test, but it does not establish that a wormhole exists. Until an object produces a distinctive, repeatable signal that cannot be explained by a black hole or another known system, the observational category remains unconfirmed.
Common misconceptions, corrected
“Black holes suck in everything.”
A black hole does not exert a magical long-distance suction force. At a given distance, its external gravity follows the same rules as the gravity of another object with the same mass. Matter can orbit a black hole, just as planets orbit a star. Objects are captured when their paths take them close enough, when they lose sufficient orbital energy, or when they cross the event horizon.

The event horizon is not a solid shell. It is a boundary defined by which paths can still reach the outside. The surrounding accretion disk and the black-hole shadow are observable structures, but neither should be confused with a physical surface at the horizon.
“The first black-hole image photographed the horizon itself.”
The M87* result imaged light from hot material and strongly bent light around the central dark shadow. It did not photograph a glowing or material event-horizon surface.
“An Einstein–Rosen bridge is a usable stargate.”
An Einstein–Rosen bridge is associated with an idealized mathematical solution. Stability, traversability and the effects of perturbations are separate questions. Treating the name as a ready-made portal skips the physical conditions that a real, traversable wormhole would have to satisfy.
“If equations allow wormholes, one must exist somewhere.”
Equations can describe possibilities that nature does not realise. Observation is the standard that separates a mathematical option from an astronomical object. NASA reports no observed wormhole and no known creation or maintenance method.

What evidence supports black holes but not wormholes?
The difference is not simply that black holes are popular while wormholes are exotic. Black holes are supported by several kinds of measurement that converge on the same explanation:

- Radiation from hot gas in an accretion disk reveals matter responding to an extremely compact gravitational source.
- Orbits of nearby stars measure the mass and location of an unseen object.
- Gravitational lensing records how the object bends light from more distant sources.
- Gravitational-wave signals from mergers match the dynamics expected when black holes orbit and combine.
- Images such as the 2019 M87* observation show the predicted bright ring and central shadow around a black-hole candidate.
For wormholes, there is no equivalent confirmed detection. A proposed signal would need to survive checks against ordinary black-hole physics, instrument effects and other astrophysical explanations. A model that produces an interesting signature is a reason to make observations, not proof that the model occurs in the universe.
How the two ideas are related in general relativity
General relativity describes gravity as the geometry of spacetime rather than as a simple force acting across an otherwise fixed stage. Black holes and wormholes can both appear when physicists explore the theory’s equations under different assumptions about matter, rotation, charge and geometry.
The equations alone do not settle whether a structure is stable, forms naturally, or can be crossed. For a black hole, astronomical observations show that nature produces compact objects with the expected external signatures and horizon behaviour. For a wormhole, the missing steps are decisive: formation, stability and traversability remain unverified.

This is why a statement such as “wormholes are allowed by relativity” must be read literally. It says the mathematics does not immediately forbid certain geometries. It does not say that a wormhole has been found, that a black hole contains one, or that a spacecraft could use one.
A practical checklist for reading wormhole claims
- Check the status: does the claim describe an observation, a computer simulation or a mathematical model?
- Identify the geometry: is it a black hole with an event horizon, a non-traversable bridge, or a model that explicitly assumes a traversable throat?
- Look for the matter assumption: does the model require exotic matter to hold the throat open?
- Separate an image from an interpretation: a picture of an accretion disk or shadow is not an image of a portal.
- Ask whether stability is demonstrated: a solution that collapses under small disturbances is not a usable travel route.
- Require a measured signature: theoretical differences must be tied to repeatable observations before they establish a new type of object.
Bottom line
Black holes and wormholes are not two names for the same cosmic object. Black holes are observed through accretion emissions, stellar orbits, lensing, gravitational waves and images of the light surrounding their shadows. Their event horizon is a one-way boundary for light, not a tunnel entrance.
Wormholes are hypothetical spacetime connections. General relativity permits some wormhole-like mathematical solutions, and theoretical studies can explore traversable models, often by assuming exotic matter. NASA reports no observed wormhole and no known way to create or sustain one. Until observations show otherwise, a black hole is an astrophysical object—not a portal—and wormhole travel remains speculative.
