World War Z: Aftermath’s Waves of Lead update launched on October 5, 2026. It adds The Walking Dead episode to Extinction Mode, two weapons, six heavy-weapon perks, five mutators, three portrait frames and new Weekly Challenge setups. The update is free across PlayStation, Xbox and PC, but playing the crossover episode requires its separate DLC.
What is the Waves of Lead launch trailer for?
The trailer is the launch asset for an update that was already released on October 5, 2026. Saber Interactive linked it from its official update notes, which announce Waves of Lead as available and list its additions.

Saber describes the release as “new free content” and says it “Added The Walking Dead Episode to Extinction mode.” The free update is not the same thing as free access to every feature it touches: The Walking Dead episode itself requires ownership of the crossover DLC.
What does the free update add?
Extinction Mode for The Walking Dead episode
Waves of Lead adds Extinction Mode support for the crossover episode, which features locations including the Prison, Alexandria Safe Zone and Grady Memorial Hospital. You must own The Walking Dead episode DLC to play that episode; the update alone does not unlock it.

Two new weapons
- BSG-12 Bullpup Shotgun: a new tier-three firearm with its own perks.
- Gas Pipe Wrench: a new heavy melee weapon.
Six heavy-weapon perks
The new perks alter how particular heavy weapons work. Saber’s notes specify the following effects:

| Chainsaw | Last Exhaust | When the fuel runs out, grants a three-second camouflage effect. |
| MAG5 Machinegun | Pillbox | Prevents grabs while you are aiming. |
| MGL | Cluster Bombs | Replaces grenades with cluster bombs. Smaller blasts scatter charges that detonate one second later. |
| Taiga-12 Heavy Assault Shotgun | Dragon Breath Shells | Fires incendiary rounds, with ammunition capacity reduced by 30%. |
| BF25 Payload Rifle | Two-layer Bullet | The bullet pierces the first Zeke and explodes after hitting the next target; total ammunition capacity is reduced by 30%. |
| MRL202 Commando Multi-shot Rocket Launcher | White Phosphorus | Loads area-effect incendiary rounds that do not leave a burning puddle. |
Five mutators
The mutators are gameplay modifiers, not a universal set available in every mode. Saber lists their supported modes as follows:

- Mummy: finish the Infector 100 times.
- Hippocratic Oath: restore 1,000 total health to allies.
- Sapper: disarm and finish the Bomber 50 times.
The update also adds new Weekly Challenge setups.

Saber says the update is free on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The publisher distinguishes that update from two add-ons:
