Yes—buying World of Warcraft gold from a third-party seller is bannable. Blizzard says participating in transactions that support gold sellers can result in removal of the gold and a permanent account suspension. Other actions, including account closure, are possible depending on the evidence and the account’s history. The compliant way to exchange real money for WoW gold is Blizzard’s in-game WoW Token.
Is buying WoW gold from another player allowed?
No. Blizzard’s July 30, 2025 policy statement says that buying gold from other players is risky, harmful, supports malicious activity, and violates the End User License Agreement. It specifically warns: “Participating in transactions that support gold sellers can lead to the removal of the gold and a permanent suspension for your account.”

This prohibition concerns real-money trading arranged outside Blizzard’s sanctioned system. A normal purchase from the in-game Auction House using WoW gold is a different activity: it is part of the game’s built-in economy. The risk arises when money, a promised payment, an outside seller, or a disguised transfer is involved.

- Paying an outside website or individual for in-game gold.
- Accepting gold that was generated or transferred as part of an unauthorized real-money exchange.
- Helping a seller move gold between characters, realms, factions, or accounts.
- Using an apparently ordinary Auction House listing or direct trade to disguise a payment.
Blizzard does not publish a public price threshold below which a transaction is considered safe. A small purchase is not a permitted purchase.

What can happen if Blizzard identifies the transaction?
The clearest published consequence is that Blizzard can remove the gold and permanently suspend the account. Blizzard Support guidance also describes account actions for accounts associated with unauthorized real-money exchanges, potentially up to account closure. There is no public rule promising that every case receives the same penalty or follows the same sequence.
| Possible action | What it means | What is publicly established |
|---|---|---|
| Gold removal | The purchased or associated gold can be taken from the account. | Blizzard explicitly warns that removal can occur. |
| Suspension | Access can be restricted for a period or permanently. | The policy specifically says a permanent suspension can result. |
| Account closure | The account may be closed rather than merely suspended. | Support guidance describes actions potentially reaching closure for unauthorized exchanges. |
| Additional account action | Other restrictions may be applied based on the circumstances. | Outcomes depend on evidence and account history; Blizzard does not publish a fixed penalty ladder. |
There is no reliable public “ban percentage”
Blizzard has not published a current, citable detection rate, ban count, or percentage showing how often each penalty is used for gold buying. Claims such as “first-time buyers only receive a warning” or “the chance of detection is a particular percentage” should not be treated as official policy.
Can you be punished for receiving someone else’s bought gold?
Yes. The account that receives the gold can still be exposed to action if Blizzard associates it with an unsupported exchange. A recipient does not receive a guaranteed exemption merely because another person arranged the purchase.

Why recipients can be investigated
Gold from a seller may be moved through several accounts before reaching the intended buyer. Blizzard may therefore examine the transfer chain rather than only the person who paid money. Support guidance also identifies cross-realm and cross-faction exchanges as especially risky because they are associated with real-money trading.
Receiving gold without knowing its origin is not a guaranteed defense. That does not mean every gift or every cross-faction trade is automatically prohibited; it means you should not assume that an unfamiliar transfer is harmless when the surrounding circumstances resemble a sale.
Transfers that deserve extra caution
- A stranger offers a large amount of gold and asks you to list a cheap or overpriced item on the Auction House.
- A player asks you to receive gold on one realm or faction and pass it to another character.
- A payment, gift-card code, or outside service is mentioned alongside an in-game trade.
- The transfer is accompanied by instructions to avoid ordinary trade records or to split the amount among several characters.
An ordinary Auction House purchase priced in line with the market is not the same as a disguised money transfer. The warning signs are the outside payment, unusual pricing, routing instructions, and other evidence of an unauthorized exchange.
What should you do if suspicious gold reaches your character?
If you believe a transfer may be connected to a seller, avoid trying to hide or redistribute it. Moving the gold to another character, spending it, or sending it onward can create more transactions for Blizzard to assess.

- Stop the related transaction. Do not send money, codes, or additional items to the person who arranged it.
- Leave the questionable gold untouched. Do not spend it, mail it, deposit it in another character’s bank, or use it in another trade.
- Record the relevant details. Keep the character names, realm, time, amount, messages, and any outside payment instructions.
- Secure your account. Change credentials if you shared them or used an unfamiliar site, and review account access for anything you do not recognize.
- Contact Blizzard Support through the official account-support channels. Explain what happened accurately and ask how to proceed. Support cannot be assumed to waive an action, but prompt, truthful reporting is safer than continuing the transfer.
What is the approved way to buy WoW gold?
The sanctioned exchange is the WoW Token. You buy a Token with real money through the in-game Shop, then list it in the dedicated Auction House Token exchange. Another player buys that Token with gold, and you receive the gold through Blizzard’s system rather than through an outside seller.
How the WoW Token process works
- Open the in-game Shop and purchase a WoW Token with money.
- Use the dedicated Token exchange in the Auction House to list it for gold.
- Wait for the system to match the Token with a gold buyer. A Token auction may take several days to sell.
- After a gold-purchased Token is acquired, it becomes soulbound and can be redeemed for game time.
Where Blizzard supports it, a Token can instead be redeemed for Battle.net Balance. That redemption option is not universal, so the choices shown in your region and game version control what you can use.
Why the Token is different from a third-party sale
The Token is an in-game, Blizzard-operated exchange with defined eligibility and inventory rules. You do not pay an outside seller, arrange a direct delivery, or ask another player to disguise a payment as an Auction House transaction.
Current WoW Token limits and eligibility rules
Blizzard Support lists the following limits and conditions. They can change by region, game version, or future policy update, so check the support page and the in-game interface before making a purchase.
Recommended Free Tools
| Rule | Current requirement or limit |
|---|---|
| Money-purchased Tokens per week | No more than 20 Tokens purchased with money in a week. |
| Inventory: money-purchased Tokens | No more than 20 money-purchased Tokens held at one time. |
| Inventory: gold-purchased Tokens | No more than 10 Tokens purchased with gold held at one time. |
| Region and account country | The Token region must match the country registered to the Battle.net account. |
| Buying with gold | You must have purchased and used at least one month of paid game time since 2017 before buying Tokens with gold. |
| Trading restrictions | Tokens cannot be traded, mailed, sold to a vendor, placed in a bank, or destroyed. |
| Character services | A character cannot be transferred, faction-changed, race-changed, or boosted while a Token is in that character’s inventory. |
| Auction cancellation | Token auctions cannot be canceled. |
| Sale timing | A Token can take several days to sell. |
| Limited-time modes | Some modes, including Timerunning, may not support Tokens. |
How to interpret the caps
The 20-per-week figure limits Tokens purchased with money; it is not a promise that you can always buy 20 more immediately. Separate inventory caps apply to money-purchased and gold-purchased Tokens. If your inventory is full, you must resolve that state through the supported Token redemption or exchange path before attempting another purchase.
Region and version qualifications matter
Token availability and redemption choices are not identical everywhere. A Token may be unavailable in a particular limited-time mode, and Battle.net Balance redemption depends on Blizzard’s support for your region. Do not use a rule shown for one region or game version to predict another.
Why does Blizzard prohibit third-party gold sellers?
Blizzard says third-party services are connected with account theft, hack programs, bots, fake product-code scams, and realm-wide advertising spam. These activities can harm the buyer, other players, and the game’s economy.

- Stolen-account gold: A seller may obtain currency by compromising another player’s account.
- Automation: Bots and hack programs can generate or farm currency in ways that violate the game’s rules.
- Fraud: A seller can take payment without delivering gold, provide a fake product code, or use payment details that later trigger a dispute.
- Spam and harassment: Realm-wide advertising can flood chat and make it harder for players to identify legitimate communications.
- Contaminated transfers: Gold can pass through several accounts, exposing people who never contacted the original seller.
The WoW Token was introduced as a secure, sanctioned alternative that lets players exchange money and game value without using those outside services.
Third-party gold, the WoW Token, and ordinary trading compared
| Activity | How it works | Rule position | Main risk or condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party gold purchase | Money is paid to an outside seller for in-game currency. | Prohibited. | Gold removal, permanent suspension, or other account action. |
| WoW Token | Buy through the in-game Shop and use the dedicated Token exchange. | Sanctioned, subject to current limits. | Region, eligibility, inventory, timing, and mode restrictions apply. |
| Ordinary Auction House purchase | Gold is exchanged for an item through the normal in-game market. | Normal gameplay when no outside payment is involved. | Do not use unusual pricing or routing to disguise a real-money payment. |
| Direct gift or transfer | One player sends gold or items to another. | Context matters. | Large, unexplained, cross-realm, cross-faction, or payment-linked transfers may be associated with unauthorized exchanges. |
Common mistakes that increase your exposure
“I will use a second account”
A second account does not make an unauthorized exchange compliant. Routing the gold through additional characters or accounts can add evidence of deliberate movement rather than remove the underlying issue.
“I will buy a cheap item for an inflated price”
An overpriced Auction House listing can be used to disguise payment. Calling it an item sale does not change the surrounding real-money transaction.
“The seller has positive reviews”
Reviews on an outside site do not make the service Blizzard-sanctioned, and they do not protect you if the gold came from a compromised account or bot activity.
“I did not know the gold was tainted”
Lack of knowledge is not a guaranteed defense. If a transfer looks unusual, stop moving the currency and contact Blizzard Support rather than attempting to normalize it through more trades.

A practical decision test before accepting gold
Before accepting an unexpected transfer, ask four questions:
Rank #4
- Custom-designed court cards and card backs inspired by the iconic, second edition World of Warcraft multiplayer online video game
- Premium silver-foiled tuck
- Trusted Bicycle quality, featuring an air-cushion finish for easy handling and shuffling
- Made in the USA with FSC paper, 100% recyclable

- Was any money, code, or outside service mentioned?
- Is the amount unusual for the relationship and the activity that produced it?
- Is someone asking you to route it through another realm, faction, character, or Auction House listing?
- Would the transaction still make sense if no real-money payment existed?
If the answers suggest an outside payment or a staged transfer, do not proceed. Use the WoW Token for a deliberate money-to-gold exchange, and keep ordinary trades tied to ordinary in-game activity.
What Blizzard has not promised
- There is no published guarantee that a first offense receives only a warning.
- There is no published safe amount of third-party gold.
- There is no public detection-rate statistic you can use to calculate the odds of action.
- There is no assurance that returning or spending questionable gold will prevent an investigation.
- There is no universal Token rule covering every region, game version, or limited-time mode.
What if the gold was sent as a gift?
A genuine gift is not automatically the same as a gold sale, but the surrounding facts matter. An unexpected large payment from a stranger, a gift linked to an outside message, or a transfer that requires you to list an item at an abnormal price can resemble an unauthorized exchange. Do not accept a gift merely because it is described as free.
If the transfer is from someone you know and is part of ordinary in-game activity, keep the transaction straightforward. Do not add an outside payment, route the currency through unrelated characters, or create an inflated Auction House listing. Those extra steps can make a legitimate-looking gift appear to be a disguised real-money transaction.
Can Blizzard remove gold after it has been spent?
Blizzard’s published warning establishes that associated gold can be removed, but it does not publish a detailed public procedure for every situation or promise that spending it prevents action. Spending, mailing, or converting questionable currency therefore does not make it safe. It can create additional records and involve more characters in the transaction chain.
If you suspect the gold is illicit, stop using it and preserve the details of how it arrived. Explain the situation through official support rather than trying to offset the amount with another transfer.
Does buying through the Token guarantee every account service will work?
No. The Token is Blizzard’s approved exchange, but a Token in a character’s inventory can block a transfer, faction change, race change, or boost. Tokens also cannot be traded, mailed, banked, sold to a vendor, or destroyed. Plan character services only after checking that no Token restriction applies.

You can still face action if Blizzard associates your account with an unauthorized exchange. Recipients do not have a guaranteed exemption, and lack of knowledge is not a guaranteed defense.
Is the WoW Token the legal way to buy gold?
The WoW Token is Blizzard’s sanctioned method. Buy it through the in-game Shop and list it in the dedicated Auction House Token exchange; do not arrange a direct payment with another player.
Can Blizzard remove bought gold?
Yes. Blizzard explicitly warns that gold connected with transactions supporting sellers can be removed. Do not assume that spending or transferring it first will prevent an investigation.
What should I do if suspicious gold appears in my mailbox or trade window?
Do not spend, mail, bank, or redistribute it. Save names, times, amounts, messages, and payment instructions, secure your account if needed, and contact Blizzard Support through official channels.
How many WoW Tokens can I buy?
Current Support limits include up to 20 Tokens purchased with money per week, no more than 20 money-purchased Tokens in inventory, and no more than 10 gold-purchased Tokens in inventory. Region, account, game-version, and eligibility rules also apply.
Can I cancel a WoW Token auction or transfer the Token to another character?
No. Token auctions cannot be canceled, and Tokens cannot be traded, mailed, banked, sold to a vendor, or destroyed. Character transfers, faction changes, race changes, and boosts are blocked while a Token is in that character’s inventory.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Third-party WoW gold buying is prohibited and can cost you the gold, the account, or both. Suspicious recipients and intermediaries can also be exposed. For a Blizzard-supported money-to-gold exchange, use the WoW Token and follow the current region, inventory, eligibility, and character-service restrictions.
