World of Warcraft: Forever made Eurogamer writer Connor Makar feel that the original MMO’s sense of discovery could return. His verdict comes from playing the beta, not from a player survey or a claim that every longtime fan will agree. The reason, in his account, is a careful mix: familiar quests and dungeons remain, while new places, routes and details give the old world reasons to surprise him again.
What “recaptured the magic” means here
Makar’s claim is a personal response to the beta. He had played earlier versions and modes, including Classic, Hardcore and Season of Discovery, and thought the particular pull of exploring the original world might be gone. Forever changed that impression. He describes the game as a refinement of the Classic-era world rather than a wholesale rebuild.

That distinction matters: the review is not evidence of broad player consensus, nor a guarantee that a returning player will feel the same. It is an account of how additions layered onto familiar foundations made exploration feel worthwhile to one reviewer.

What Forever changes—and what it keeps
New discoveries inside a familiar world
In the beta, Makar points to the new Riverglades area and Farholde Keep, along with integrated class-and-race combinations such as Undead Paladins. Smaller surprises include druid forms, mage scrolls and alternate routes through the world. The appeal is not simply more content; it is the possibility of encountering something unexpected while moving through a setting players may already know.
#1 Best Overall
- World of Warcraft Game
- Includes Expansion Packs: The Burnings Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria
- 30 days of free game time included
- Includes levels 1 through 90
- Subscription, Internet connection, and Battle.net registration required
He contrasts that approach with a more vertical progression model associated with modern WoW. Forever’s draw, as he describes it, is returning attention to exploration across the original world rather than replacing it with a wholesale overhaul. The review’s summary is: “This is not a Cataclysm-style overhaul, rather a refinement and enhancement of what’s already there.” Eurogamer’s review
Old foundations, updated presentation
Familiar quests and dungeons remain, according to the review. Makar also praises revised lighting, fog and water, while noting that players can keep the older visual style. That option helps frame the visual changes as an enhancement rather than a demand to abandon the look associated with Classic.

A point of disagreement: the Skyborne
Not every addition will read as authentically Classic to every player. The review acknowledges debate about the Skyborne race’s visual style, and treats future additions as something Blizzard will need to handle carefully. That caveat is central to the balance: new material can renew curiosity, but too much or the wrong kind can weaken the continuity that makes the original world meaningful to returning players.

Blizzard positions Forever as a continuing home alongside modern WoW and Classic WoW, set on the original continents, with progression to level 60 and further stories, experiences and updates planned. That makes it distinct from treating Classic as a fixed snapshot, while leaving modern WoW as a separate option for players who want its current progression. Blizzard’s overview
For a player deciding which version fits, the useful questions are practical rather than universal: Do you want familiar geography and quest structures with new discoveries layered in? Do you prefer the pace and progression emphasis of the original world, or modern WoW’s separate progression? Does the ability to retain the older visual style matter? Forever’s beta review speaks most directly to players who value exploration and continuity; it does not establish that one version is better for everyone.

How to read the verdict
The strongest case for Forever in Makar’s account is the combination of recognition and surprise: the old structure is still there, but new places and details create reasons to look closer. The reservation is equally important. The Skyborne debate shows that additions can divide players, and the reviewer’s positive assessment remains provisional: he was waiting to see whether the full release would preserve the beta’s balance.
So the title’s claim is best understood narrowly and honestly. Forever restored the original MMO’s magic for one reviewer during beta, chiefly by making a familiar world feel explorable again. Whether it does that for other players—and whether that balance survives launch—remains an individual judgment.
