Blizzard presents it as a Classic-rooted continuation focused on leveling, exploration and social play. The exact “four new dungeons” quote in the supplied headline could not be verified in the available published sources, so the reason or sequence behind the reported expansion in scope remains unconfirmed.
What is World of Warcraft: Forever?
World of Warcraft: Forever is Blizzard’s announced project to continue exploring original Azeroth, drawing on lessons from WoW Classic and Season of Discovery. Blizzard says its design is guided by approachability and familiarity, making the world the main character, valuing the journey, and protecting social play. Leveling, effort, preparation, communication and cooperation are described as central to the experience. Blizzard’s panel recap outlines those goals; they are design intentions, not proof of how the released game will ultimately play.

What changes has Blizzard announced?
The announcement describes a broad expansion of content across Azeroth rather than a handful of isolated additions. Blizzard’s recap lists more than a thousand new quests across levels 1–60, new and reimagined regions, and a new playable race, the Skyborne, with class access that varies by faction.
Dungeons, raids and battleground
| Content | Announced details |
|---|---|
| Dungeons | Nine: Hall of Thanes; Ruins of Lordaeron; an excavation site above Whelgar’s Excavation; City of Dalaran; Blackmaw Hold; the Drowned City; Krol’dok Stronghold; Alcaz Prison; and Shaper’s Terrace. |
| Raids | Hyjal Summit, with 20-player encounters, and Barrow Deeps, planned as a maximum-level 10-player challenge. |
| Battleground | Darkspear Islands, described as 15-versus-15. |
These are counts and formats from Blizzard’s announcement, not independently audited measurements; plans can change during development.

Progression and play features
Blizzard also announced Legacy progression for alternate characters, outdoor Camping, opt-in transmog, visual presets, HD and SD character-model options, and official gamepad support. Legacy is intended to reward playing alts, while the broader design aims to keep content relevant across character levels instead of concentrating everything at level 60.
What have the developers said about the design?
In a September 22, 2026 interview with Windows Central, lead game designer Tim Jones and lead software engineer Nora Valleta described Forever as having a level-60 cap and horizontal progression. Jones said, “Every single one of our 27 talent trees is now viable for all content in WoW: Forever,” while also noting that the trees are not equal and have different strengths and weaknesses. This is the team’s stated balance goal, not an independent assessment of how every build will perform at launch.

- Warcraft III Battle Chest
Valleta described Classic play as more social and world-focused, including exploration and physically traveling to dungeons. Separately, in a September 2026 interview with But Why Tho?, lead software engineer Ana Resendez and associate production director Clayton Stone characterized the initial approach as comparatively conservative after player feedback on Season of Discovery. They said they want encounters to feel challenging while remaining grounded in Classic. That interview also reported fixed raid sizes rather than flexible scaling at the time; such development details may change.
Did Blizzard really start with a four-dungeon plan?
The supplied headline attributes this line to a developer: “Our original pitch internally was: We’ll do 4 new dungeons.” The exact quotation and its original interview context could not be verified in the published sources available here. Blizzard’s official recap confirms that nine dungeons are now announced, but it does not establish the original four-dungeon pitch, who said it, when the scope changed, or why. It would therefore be premature to say that developer excitement alone caused the project to grow.
