Use Blizzard’s Item Restoration service first when you accidentally sold, destroyed, or disenchanted an eligible item. If many items or gold disappeared, your password or access changed, or you see activity you do not recognize, treat the account as potentially compromised: recover the account, secure the computer and Battle.net account, then submit a support ticket. Player scams are handled differently—Blizzard says it does not restore items or gold lost in a scam.

Choose the right World of Warcraft support route

The cause of the loss determines what Blizzard can do. Start with this triage before opening a ticket:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What happened Best first action What to expect
You sold, destroyed, or disenchanted one or more items by mistake Open Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration service Eligible items are returned through the character’s in-game mailbox; disenchanting materials are reclaimed
Many items or gold are gone, or account access, password, or email changed Use Blizzard’s account-recovery and hacked-account guidance Recover access, secure the account and computer, then submit a support ticket
You gave an item or gold to another player and believe you were scammed Report the other account Blizzard may act if it verifies the incident, but does not promise to reimburse the item or gold

This distinction prevents a common mistake: using an item-recovery form for an account that is still being accessed by someone else. If losses continue while you investigate, a restoration request cannot protect the rest of the account.

Quick checks before choosing a route

  • Was the loss limited to one character and one recent action? Start with Buyback or Item Restoration.
  • Are several characters affected, or did your password, email, or authenticator settings change? Start with Account Recovery and security steps.
  • Did you voluntarily transfer the property to another player? Treat it as a trade-scam report, not a guaranteed restoration case.
  • Is the problem only a displayed gold total? Verify the character’s built-in currency display and recent transactions before assuming theft.

Recover an item you sold, destroyed, or disenchanted

Blizzard’s Item Restoration page is a self-service tool for eligible items. It is normally faster than starting a ticket because the game presents the items that can still be restored. The list, rather than a general request, determines what the service can process.

#1 Best Overall

  • Azeroth Awaits! Join millions of players and enter a world of myth, magic, and endless adventure.
  • With a single game time purchase you can access World of Warcraft and WoW Classic, including 20th Anniversary Edition, Cataclysm Classic, Season of Discovery, and Hardcore Realms.
  • Embark on your epic adventure in Azeroth for 60 days with this pre-paid game timecard.
  • Simply enter your code at battle.net/code then assign this game time to any new or existing World of Warcraft account to keep the adventures going. No game purchase required.
  • Includes access to World of Warcraft and WOW Classic. The most recent modern WOW expansion is sold separately.

Use the restoration page

  1. Open the World of Warcraft Item Restoration service while signed in to the Battle.net account that owns the character.
  2. Select the affected character. The service displays the items available for that character.
  3. Choose the item or items you want back and submit the restoration.
  4. Log in to that character and check the in-game mailbox. Blizzard sends restored items there after processing.

A disenchanted item is restored in exchange for reclaiming the materials produced by the disenchant. Make sure those materials are still available; the service is designed to reverse the transaction rather than duplicate both the item and its materials. If you spent, mailed, or otherwise moved the materials, the reversal may not be possible through the normal flow.

Cooldown, quantity, and account requirements

Blizzard states that restoration can be used once every 24 hours per character. Its detailed guidance also allows up to five items per character during that 24-hour period. The limit is per character, not a single five-item allowance shared by the whole account. The service requires game time or an active subscription, and it cannot be used while the account is suspended or banned.

Plan the request carefully. If several eligible items are listed, select the items that matter most before submitting, because using the service starts that character’s 24-hour cooldown. Keep the character and item details handy so you do not accidentally choose the wrong entry.

Items the service will not show

The list is limited by item type, transaction, and age. Blizzard’s exclusions include:

  • Quest items and stackable crafting materials
  • Consumables
  • Collectibles already added to a Collections tab
  • Temporary holiday items
  • Items traded or mailed to another character or player
  • Items sold through the Auction House
  • Items destroyed before a character transfer or faction change

These exclusions explain why an item can be absent even when you remember deleting it. A collection entry that is already unlocked does not need a duplicate physical item restored, and an Auction House sale is not treated like an accidental vendor sale. Likewise, materials in a stack and quest-object items are not ordinary equipment entries in the restoration list.

If you destroyed an item during the current game session, log out before deciding it is gone. Blizzard directs players to check a vendor’s Buyback tab first; that tab can contain up to the 12 most recently sold items for the current session. Buyback is separate from Item Restoration, so inspect it immediately and do not assume the restoration page is the fastest option for a just-sold item.

How long an item remains eligible

Retention varies by item. Blizzard gives a Common (white) item that may remain recoverable for about one day and an Epic item that may remain recoverable for about 30 days as examples, not guarantees. Higher-quality and higher-item-level items are generally retained longer, but the restoration list is the practical test for a particular item. Do not treat the example periods as a promise that every Common disappears after exactly 24 hours or every Epic remains for exactly 30 days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the item is absent from the list, Blizzard says it is no longer available through Item Restoration. Customer Support cannot restore an item that has already been purged from the service. Before contacting support, recheck the character, realm, item name, Buyback tab, and mailbox; choosing a different character is a frequent explanation for an apparently empty list.

When a quest reward is missing

A quest reward that was sold, destroyed, or disenchanted follows the same Item Restoration route as other eligible items. Select the character and look for the reward in the restoration list. If it appears, submit the request and check the mailbox after processing.

Quest items are excluded as a category, so an item that exists only as a quest-object item may not qualify. A normal equipment reward can therefore be treated differently from the quest item used to complete an objective. If a quest reward is not listed, Blizzard’s guidance is that it is no longer available for restoration; opening a ticket does not create a separate recovery method for a purged item.

Handle widespread losses as a possible account compromise

A single misclick points to Item Restoration. A pattern—multiple characters stripped of gear, gold missing everywhere, an unfamiliar password change, a changed email address, or login trouble—suggests someone else may have accessed the account. Do not keep playing or move remaining assets while investigating; preserve the current state and secure access first. Moving gold or gear can make the timeline harder to explain and may expose more characters.

Blizzard’s recovery sequence

  1. Recover the account. Use Blizzard’s Account Recovery process if you cannot sign in or your credentials were changed.
  2. Secure Battle.net and the computer. Change compromised credentials, remove malware or suspicious software, and check the email account connected to Battle.net. Blizzard also recommends adding a Battle.net Authenticator and a passkey.
  3. Submit a support ticket. Contact Blizzard after the computer and account are secured, describing the timeline, affected characters, missing assets, and any unauthorized changes.

Secure the email account as well as Battle.net: an attacker who controls the email can often reset the game account again. Avoid entering credentials into links sent through unsolicited messages. Use Blizzard’s official sign-in and support pages, then review account-security settings after access is restored.

Account-security instructions and contact choices can vary by region and whether you are logged in. Blizzard’s hacked-account guidance surfaced on a European support domain, so use the equivalent account-recovery experience for your region rather than assuming every label or step is identical. The sequence remains the important part: regain access, secure the environment, and then report the loss.

Information to include in the ticket

  • Battle.net account name or the email used to sign in
  • Character names, realms, and approximate times of the loss
  • What disappeared and whether the loss affected one character or several
  • Any password, email, authenticator, or access changes you noticed
  • When you completed recovery and security steps
  • Relevant screenshots, mail records, or transaction details that show the sequence

Use approximate times and a clear order if you do not know the exact timestamp. Never send a password, authenticator code, or passkey to someone claiming to be support. Use Blizzard’s official logged-in support flow.

Find gold that appears to be missing

Before assuming theft, check ordinary destinations for the gold. On the affected character, review:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Recent Auction House purchases or sales
  • Vendor purchases, including expensive repairs or equipment
  • Mail sent to another character or player
  • Deposits into a guild bank
  • A WoW Token purchase
  • The character’s actual currency display rather than an addon’s display

An addon can show a stale or filtered value, while mail, guild-bank activity, or a purchase can make the balance look wrong. Compare the built-in value on each affected character, then inspect sent mail and guild-bank history if available. If the discrepancy remains on one character after these checks, document the transactions and use Blizzard’s support flow. If gold is missing across all characters, follow the hacked-account process instead of treating it as a normal accounting error.

Do not buy or sell more assets just to test the balance. Record the current amount, character, realm, and approximate time, then let support review the account history after security is restored.

What to do after a player-to-player scam

Blizzard’s Trade Scams guidance is explicit: it does not restore items or gold lost in these situations. This includes cases where another player persuaded you to trade, mail, or otherwise transfer assets and then failed to keep an agreement. The fact that the other player broke a promise does not turn the transfer into an eligible accidental deletion.

Report the suspected scammer through the in-game reporting tools or the available Blizzard support route. Blizzard says it may take action when it can verify the incident, but reporting is not a promise that your property will be returned. Include the character names, realm, approximate time, chat context, and transaction details; do not continue negotiating with the suspected scammer or send additional items. Save the relevant chat or mail details while they are available.

When and how to contact Blizzard Support

For a loot-related issue that is not resolved by the relevant troubleshooting article or Item Restoration, use the Contact Us option in Blizzard’s US support issue flow. Choose the closest matching World of Warcraft problem and follow the available logged-in steps. A ticket is appropriate for a suspected compromise or a remaining account-specific discrepancy, not as a substitute for checking an item that the restoration page has already purged.

Do not rely on an assumed phone number, live-chat schedule, or response time. The contact methods shown can depend on the issue category, region, account status, and whether you are signed in. If the site directs you back to self-service, complete that step first; a ticket is most useful when you have already checked Buyback, Item Restoration, account security, or transaction history as appropriate.

Keep the report focused

  • Use one ticket for one connected incident so the timeline is clear.
  • State whether the loss was accidental, suspicious account activity, or a trade dispute.
  • List exact characters and realms instead of saying only “my items are gone.”
  • Explain what you already checked and the result.
  • Update the existing ticket if new evidence appears rather than opening many duplicates.
  • Keep passwords, authenticator codes, and passkeys out of the ticket.

Prevent another loss

  • Enable a Battle.net Authenticator and a passkey after regaining control of the account.
  • Use a unique password for Battle.net and protect the email account tied to it.
  • Keep the operating system, browser, and security software updated; remove untrusted addons or downloaded programs.
  • Pause before disenchanting or vendoring rare gear, and inspect the confirmation window.
  • Check the vendor Buyback tab immediately after an accidental sale.
  • Use the Auction House and mail only when the recipient and amount are confirmed.
  • Capture screenshots or note times when a suspicious trade, login, or character change occurs.

The practical rule is simple: use Item Restoration for an eligible, isolated mistake; use account recovery and security steps for broad or suspicious losses; and report scams without expecting automatic reimbursement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many items can I restore in World of Warcraft?

Blizzard’s Item Restoration guidance allows up to five items per character during a 24-hour period. The service can be used once every 24 hours on each character, and restored items arrive in that character’s in-game mailbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my item missing from the restoration list?

It may be an excluded type, such as a quest item, stackable crafting material, consumable, temporary holiday item, or collection-tab collectible. Items traded, mailed, sold on the Auction House, or destroyed before a transfer or faction change are also excluded. If an otherwise eligible item is absent, Blizzard says it has been purged and Customer Support cannot restore it.

Can Blizzard restore an item I disenchanted?

Eligible disenchanted items can be restored through Item Restoration. The materials created by the disenchant are reclaimed, so the process reverses the transaction rather than giving you both the item and the materials.

What should I do if all my characters are missing gold or gear?

Treat the pattern as a possible account compromise. Recover the account, secure Battle.net and the computer, add an Authenticator and passkey, and submit a support ticket with the affected characters, times, missing assets, and unauthorized changes.

Can Blizzard return gold lost in a player scam?

Blizzard says it does not restore items or gold lost in player-to-player scams. Report the suspected account with the character, realm, time, chat, and transaction details; Blizzard may act if it can verify the incident, but reimbursement is not promised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I check Buyback before using Item Restoration?

Yes. For an item sold during the current game session, log out if needed and check the vendor’s Buyback tab first. Blizzard says that tab can contain up to the 12 most recently sold items for that session.

Does Item Restoration work on a suspended account?

No. Blizzard’s detailed requirements say the service requires game time or an active subscription and cannot be used while the account is suspended or banned.

Is there a guaranteed phone response or restoration outcome?

No universal phone option, live-chat schedule, response time, or guaranteed restoration outcome is established. Sign in to Blizzard Support, choose the closest issue, and follow the contact methods shown for your region and account.

The Bottom Line

For one accidental sale, deletion, or disenchant, check Buyback and then use Item Restoration; Blizzard allows up to five eligible items every 24 hours per character, subject to exclusions and account requirements. For widespread losses or changed credentials, recover and secure the account before opening a ticket. For a player scam, report the account but do not expect Blizzard to reimburse the item or gold.
