Graphics settings affect how the game renders that character on your screen; they do not change the character’s face, hair, skin tone, or other selected features. Transmog is separate again: Blizzard’s current system applies a chosen appearance to an equipment slot, so replacing the item in that slot does not remove the look. Saved outfits can be switched for free, while changing a slot’s configured appearance costs gold.
What can you change on a WoW character?
World of Warcraft has two official customization contexts: the character-creation interface and the in-game Barber Shop. Both use the same general customization system, but the options shown are restricted by race. A choice available to one race may not appear for another.

Blizzard’s Shadowlands preview grouped the available cosmetics into broad categories such as skin tones, hairstyles, and eye colors. Some races also have race-specific details including tattoos, jewelry, beards, scars, and hair ornaments. That preview described the system at the time; it should not be treated as a complete inventory of every option available today or as proof that every named option appears for every race.
Blizzard rebuilt the customization technology for Shadowlands. Features such as eyes, face, beard, and moustache were separated instead of being stored in only a few generic slots, and the game began procedurally generating player textures. The same customization interface is used in character creation and at a Barber Shop.

How do I change my character’s appearance after creation?
Use a Barber Shop
For an existing character, visit a Barber Shop in the game world and open its customization interface. The available controls are determined by your character’s race. Choose the feature you want to alter, preview the result, and confirm the change through the Barber Shop interface.
This is the supported route for changing appearance features such as hair and face choices after the character already exists. The interface is not a graphics-quality tool: it changes the character’s selected cosmetic data.
What you can expect to see
- Skin-tone choices and hairstyles are part of the broad customization categories Blizzard has documented.
- Eye colors and facial options are handled as distinct features in the rebuilt system.
- Depending on race, the interface may include tattoos, jewelry, beards, scars, hair ornaments, or other race-specific details.
- Options shown in older previews, including examples from the 9.1.5 update, are dated examples rather than a promise of a complete current list.
Why is an option missing?
The first thing to check is race eligibility. Blizzard’s documentation repeatedly describes customization as race-dependent. A missing beard, tattoo, jewelry option, or hairstyle may therefore be an intended restriction rather than a display problem. Also make sure you are using the Barber Shop rather than looking for a character-creation-only screen; both interfaces share the system, but the choices still depend on the character.

| Where you customize | When it is used | What determines the available choices |
|---|---|---|
| Character creation | Before the character enters the game | Race and the cosmetic features supported for that race |
| Barber Shop | After the character already exists | The same race-dependent customization system used by the creation interface |
Blizzard’s 2020 preview described “hundreds of new character customization options,” a qualitative description rather than a guaranteed current count. The 9.1.5 article also gave a dated example of new options for Highmountain Tauren, Lightforged Draenei, Nightborne, and Void Elves at both character creation and a Barber Shop. Those examples show how Blizzard has delivered additions, but they do not establish the current inventory for every race.

Do graphics settings change my character’s appearance?
Graphics settings and character customization solve different problems.
- Character customization selects the character’s cosmetic data: for example, a hairstyle, eye color, face option, tattoo, beard, or skin tone that your race supports.
- Graphics settings control how the game renders that data on your computer, including the overall visual presentation and performance behavior.
Changing a graphics setting does not select a new face, hair option, tattoo, or transmog appearance. Conversely, changing a Barber Shop option does not configure your graphics hardware or frame rate.
How to approach graphics settings safely
- Open the game’s current in-game Graphics menu.
- Read the description shown for each control in your installed version rather than relying on an old screenshot or a guide written for another expansion.
- Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change affected image quality, visibility, or performance.
- Test in the location where you normally play, since a quiet area and a crowded city can produce very different results.
- If performance worsens, undo the last change or restore the previous profile and test again.
Blizzard’s official material available for this topic does not establish a current list of menu labels, recommended values, or hardware-specific performance settings. Therefore, no universal “set this to high” or “turn that off” prescription is reliable here. Use the labels and explanations in your current client, or consult a current official guide that matches your game version and hardware.
Why can two players see a character differently?
The selected customization is character data, while rendering is local. Two players can therefore have the same underlying character appearance but see different levels of visual detail or performance depending on their own graphics configuration and hardware. That difference does not mean the Barber Shop change failed.

How does transmog work in the current system?
Transmog changes the appearance displayed by equipment without changing the item’s underlying gameplay properties. Blizzard’s September 2025 announcement describes the current model as applying and saving an appearance to a gear slot rather than tying the look permanently to one physical item.
The practical result is important: if you configure the appearance for a slot and later equip a replacement item in that same slot, the configured look remains. Equipping new gear does not automatically erase the slot’s chosen appearance.
| Action | What happens | Cost or access rule documented by Blizzard |
|---|---|---|
| Set a slot to a specific appearance | The slot displays the selected look | The 2025 announcement says updating an outfit to set a slot’s look costs gold |
| Replace the item in that slot | The configured transmog look stays on the slot | No separate appearance reset is described |
| Switch to an already saved outfit | The saved slot-by-slot appearance becomes active | The pre-expansion notes describe switching as free |
| Buy another outfit slot | You gain another saved outfit space | Additional slots can be purchased with gold and are account-wide for the warband |
Why does a transmog appear to disappear?
First check whether you changed outfits rather than merely replacing an item. A saved outfit can assign a different appearance to the same slot, making the previous look seem to have vanished. Also verify that the item is in the slot whose appearance you configured. The current system is slot-based, so the relevant question is “what appearance is assigned to this gear slot?” rather than “which individual item had the look?”
If the look was never saved as part of an outfit, you may need to set the slot again. Setting a slot’s appearance is the action Blizzard says costs gold; switching among outfits you have already saved is described separately as free.

How do saved outfits work?
Free starting outfits and additional slots
The Midnight pre-expansion update notes say players begin with two free outfits. Additional outfit slots can be purchased with gold, and those slots are account-wide for the warband. The notes also say earlier transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets, so older appearance collections can be represented in the updated system.
Saving and activating an outfit
- Configure the appearance assigned to each gear slot you want in the outfit.
- Save that combination as an outfit through the current transmog interface.
- When you want to use it again, activate the saved outfit instead of rebuilding each slot manually.
- Use the action bar option described in the pre-expansion notes if you want a direct in-game button for an outfit.
Blizzard’s 2025 announcement refers to dozens of unlockable outfits. “Dozens” is a qualitative description, not a guaranteed exact slot count for every account or version.
Manual switching versus automatic switching
| Method | Best for | How it behaves |
|---|---|---|
| Manual activation | Choosing an outfit whenever you decide to change it | Activate a saved outfit from the interface or an action-bar button; the notes describe saved switching as free |
| Situations | Players who want context-based changes | The system can change outfits automatically in response to an activity or condition |
The 2025 announcement gives examples such as entering a dungeon or changing specialization. The pre-expansion notes identify this automatic behavior as Situations. Configure the conditions available in your current client carefully, because an automatic rule can replace the outfit you selected manually when its condition is met.

- Create and save the outfits you want to use, such as a general adventuring set and a dungeon-specific set.
- Open the current outfit or transmog management interface and look for the Situations feature described in Blizzard’s update notes.
- Choose the activity or character condition offered by your client, such as entering a dungeon or changing specialization.
- Assign the saved outfit to that condition and confirm the rule.
- Test by entering the relevant activity or changing the relevant condition. If the appearance does not change, verify that the outfit was saved and that the rule is enabled.
Because Blizzard’s notes describe the feature but do not provide a universal set of current menu labels in the material available here, the exact clicks can vary by client version. Follow the labels displayed in your installation rather than an older interface screenshot.

Common problems and fixes
“I cannot find the face or hair option I want.”
- Confirm that the character’s race supports the feature; customization is race-dependent.
- Use the Barber Shop for an existing character rather than the character-creation interface.
- Check whether you are looking at a dated guide that describes an option from an older patch or expansion.
“My new gear removed my transmog.”
Under the slot-based system described in Blizzard’s pre-expansion notes, replacing an item should preserve the configured appearance for that slot. Check whether you switched to another saved outfit, equipped the item in a different slot, or never saved the desired appearance.
“Changing graphics settings did not change my character.”
That is expected. Graphics controls change rendering, not the character’s selected cosmetic features. Use a Barber Shop or character creation for appearance selection, and use the in-game Graphics menu for visual-quality and performance controls.
“My outfit changes back by itself.”
Review any Situations rule. Automatic switching can be tied to activities or specialization changes, so a condition may be activating another saved outfit. Disable or edit the rule if you want manual control.
What Blizzard’s customization history explains
The technical reason the system can expose separate eyes, face, beard, and moustache controls is that Blizzard rebuilt the customization architecture for Shadowlands. The engineering article says the user interface had to be rewritten from scratch as the number of customization options increased, and that player textures were generated procedurally. Earlier art-direction material also explains that updated facial choices require coordinated geometry, texture, and animation work. Those articles provide development context, not a current catalog of every option or a performance guarantee.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Want a different face, hair, eye color, tattoo, or beard? Use character creation if the character is new; otherwise visit a Barber Shop.
- Want the character to render more clearly or run faster? Use the current in-game Graphics menu and test changes on your own hardware.
- Want gear to look different? Set a transmog appearance for the relevant slot.
- Want the look to survive an item upgrade? Slot-based transmog is designed to preserve the configured appearance when the item in that slot is replaced.
- Want to alternate complete looks? Save outfits, use the action bar for manual activation, or configure Situations for automatic changes.
- Want to avoid repeated gold charges? Save the appearance as an outfit and switch among saved outfits rather than repeatedly updating individual slot appearances.
