Retail WoW or WoW Classic: Which game are you starting?
“World of Warcraft” now covers the live retail game and several Classic versions. Advice that is correct for one may be wrong for the other. Retail has account-wide Warbands and substantial cross-faction play. Classic versions generally put more emphasis on the individual realm and may use different realm types, progression rules, and social systems.

Look at the game selection in the Battle.net launcher before making a character. If friends already play, ask them for the exact game name, region, realm, and character names. “We play WoW” is not enough information to guarantee that you will be able to group together.
Which realm should I choose if my friends already play?
For WoW Classic, match your friends’ realm
Blizzard’s New Players Starter Guide (February 25, 2026) specifically advises choosing the realm your friends use and states that, in World of Warcraft Classic, characters can group only with other characters on the same realm. If coordinated play is your priority, treat your friends’ realm as the first decision rather than choosing from a list based on its name or apparent population.
#1 Best Overall
- Great product!
Ask your group these questions before creating a character:
- Which Classic game and mode are you launching?
- What is the exact realm name and region?
- Are you playing the same faction for outdoor activities?
- Will you mainly quest together, run dungeons, join a guild, or use a different activity?
Creating a character on another realm can leave you unable to join the same Classic groups even when the characters are in the same region. Realm transfers, availability, and restrictions depend on the particular Classic game, so check the current character-selection and support information before paying for a move.
Retail realms are not the same as Classic realm limits
Do not turn the Classic rule into a universal retail rule. Retail characters can use broader account and group systems, and the game’s current social features are not defined solely by one realm. You should still coordinate with friends because realm, region, guild, community, and activity rules can affect what you can do together.
What do Normal and RP realms mean?
Blizzard’s starter guide describes Normal and Role-Playing (RP) realms. An RP realm is intended for players who want to role-play and uses the Normal ruleset rather than automatically adding a separate player-versus-player ruleset. Choose RP when you want that social style and are willing to follow the community’s role-playing conventions; choose Normal when you simply want the standard environment.
Classic’s official primer lists Normal, PvP, RP, and RP PvP realm types. That primer dates from 2019, and Classic menus can change between modes, so do not assume every current Classic release offers the identical four-option list. Read the rules shown for the specific game and realm you are selecting.

What does a Warband share?
Retail Warbands operate at the account level within a single region and span realms and factions, according to Blizzard’s April 2024 preview. This can make collections and some account progression available across your characters. A Warband does not mean that every character can join every group, transfer character-specific progress, or ignore realm and activity requirements. Treat account-wide collections as a convenience, not as a replacement for checking the group rules.
Does my faction stop me from grouping with friends?
In modern retail WoW, choosing Horde or Alliance is no longer a blanket bar to playing with friends. The answer depends on where you are playing and what kind of group you are forming.

Open-world play remains different
Opposite-faction characters can remain unfriendly or hostile outdoors. In War Mode, the relationship is more severe: opposite-faction guildmates are hostile in the open world. That affects how you travel, interact, and cooperate outside instanced content. You should coordinate faction when your plan centers on outdoor questing, shared world objectives, or other activities that require characters to interact in the open world.
Premade instances can be cross-faction
Blizzard’s cross-faction instances explanation allows opposite-faction players to be invited when they are BattleTag or Real ID friends or members of a cross-faction WoW Community. The listed premade Group Finder activities include dungeons, raids, rated arenas, rated battlegrounds, and Torghast. A group leader can restrict applicants by faction, so an activity being technically cross-faction does not guarantee that every listing accepts both factions.
To form a premade group, make sure the players have the required friendship or community connection, then use the appropriate Group Finder category. If an invitation fails, verify that everyone is in the same retail game and region, that the friendship or community relationship is recognized, and that the leader has not enabled a faction restriction.
Random matchmaking is a separate case
Random matchmaking does not automatically follow the premade rules. Blizzard’s May 2022 update said that random activities such as Heroic dungeons, Skirmishes, and Random Battlegrounds remained same-faction in that rollout and listed excluded instances. Those are historical patch notes, not a complete current activity matrix. For a random queue, read the activity’s current Group Finder description and accept that its restrictions may differ from a manually assembled premade group.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan opposite-faction characters join one guild?
Blizzard’s cross-faction guild announcement describes shared guild chat and guild conveniences for members of opposite factions, plus communal play inside instances. Outdoors, those characters still remain Unfriendly, or Hostile in War Mode. The announcement described invitation conditions involving Battle.net friendship or membership in the same Battle.net community. It also included a same-realm rule as publication-time context; because guild interfaces and requirements can change, confirm the current invitation prompt and guild rules in your game.
Where should I go after I make my character?
Start with the guided introduction
Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 starter guide says new characters begin in Exile’s Reach. The introductory experience teaches movement, talking to non-player characters, using your first class abilities, and handling items in your inventory. Follow the on-screen objectives instead of skipping instructions simply because you have played another character before; the tutorial establishes the interface and combat habits that the rest of the game assumes.
- Move to the highlighted objective and read the quest text or objective tracker.
- Speak with the marked NPC and accept the available quest.
- Use the ability bar and any newly taught skill when the tutorial asks you to do so.
- Loot enemies or objects, open your bags, and equip or use the item the objective identifies.
- Return to the marked NPC and turn in the quest before following the next highlighted step.
Do not rely on a permanent expansion route
The same guide describes Dragonflight story content in its publication context. Expansion routing can change as Blizzard updates the live game, so a guide that promises one permanent post-tutorial zone can become stale. After Exile’s Reach, follow the current quest tracker, map markers, and instructions presented by your character’s game. If a friend sends you to a different zone, compare that suggestion with the active quest objectives and the version you selected.
How should I read quests?
Quest objectives are your most reliable navigation tool. The tracker usually tells you whether to travel, defeat enemies, collect items, interact with an object, or speak to an NPC. When the objective does not update, check that you are in the marked area, have accepted the correct quest, and are using the interaction indicated by the text. Open the map to inspect the highlighted region rather than abandoning a quest because the next step is not immediately visible.

How do I find someone to help me?
Use Newcomer Chat
Blizzard says new players are automatically added to Newcomer Chat. You can ask experienced players who serve as guides about controls, quests, class basics, travel, or group etiquette. The 2026 guide says access continues until level 50, so use the channel while it is available rather than waiting until you are stuck.
- State whether you are playing retail or Classic.
- Include your region, realm, faction, level, and the exact quest or activity.
- Explain what you already tried and what happened.
- Do not share passwords, payment details, or account-recovery codes.
Ask friends for the information that matters
Before a friend invites you, ask for the game version, realm, faction, and planned activity. For retail premade content, confirm the required Battle.net friendship or community membership. For Classic, confirm the realm first because the same-realm grouping rule can decide whether the invitation works at all.
Use the activity’s own finder
When you are ready for group content, choose the finder category that matches your goal. Premade dungeons, raids, rated arenas, rated battlegrounds, and Torghast have different eligibility and invitation behavior from random queues. Read the listing title, leader notes, role requirements, item-level requirements, and faction setting before applying. If you are new to an encounter, say so before the group starts; clear communication prevents a mismatch between the leader’s expectations and your experience.

Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 New Players Starter Guide says the Free Trial covers playable content through level 20. The guide says a subscription or game time is required to continue beyond level 20, and it describes access up to level 80 in that publication context. Because access, level caps, and regional terms can change, verify the current official trial page and the terms shown on your Battle.net account before relying on those limits.

The guide says the Free Trial is available to new or existing Battle.net accounts, including accounts with an inactive subscription or game time. It also says the free trial does not apply to WoW Classic games. That means a retail trial account does not automatically grant free access to a Classic version.
Best Value
| Question | What the February 25, 2026 guide states | What to verify before starting |
|---|---|---|
| How far can the Free Trial go? | Playable content through level 20. | Current level cap and regional eligibility. |
| What unlocks play beyond that point? | A subscription or game time. | Current plans, billing terms, and account status. |
| Which accounts can use it? | New and existing Battle.net accounts, including accounts with inactive subscription or game time. | Whether your specific account and region qualify. |
| Does it include Classic? | No; the guide says the Free Trial does not apply to WoW Classic games. | The exact Classic access requirement for the version you choose. |
No physical product is required for these decisions. You need the appropriate Battle.net account, the selected game version, and—when required—active subscription or game time.
Common beginner problems and fixes
“My friend cannot invite me.”
- Check that you launched the same game version, not retail and Classic.
- For Classic, confirm that both characters are on the same realm.
- For retail cross-faction play, confirm BattleTag or Real ID friendship, or membership in the same cross-faction WoW Community.
- Check whether the activity is premade or random matchmaking; their rules differ.
- Ask the group leader whether a faction restriction is enabled.
“We can group, but we cannot cooperate outdoors.”
That behavior is consistent with cross-faction limits. Opposite-faction characters can remain unfriendly outdoors and hostile in War Mode even when they share guild facilities or play together inside instances. Move the activity into an eligible instance or create same-faction characters for outdoor plans.
“I do not know where the next quest is.”
Read the objective tracker, inspect the highlighted map area, and return to the NPC or object named by the quest. If you are following an old guide, stop and use the current in-game route; expansion campaigns and recommended paths can change.
“I need help but cannot find a guide.”
Check Newcomer Chat while your character is below the guide’s stated level-50 cutoff. Include the version, realm, level, quest name, and the step that failed so another player can give a specific answer.
Quick Recap
A practical first-session checklist
- Ask friends whether they play retail or a particular Classic version.
- Record the region, realm, faction, and activity you want to share.
- Choose the realm that matches your friends when playing Classic.
- Select Normal or RP according to the ruleset and social environment you want; inspect any additional Classic realm types shown for your mode.
- Create the character and complete Exile’s Reach unless you have a version-specific reason to choose another current route.
- Follow the live quest tracker and map rather than an old expansion walkthrough.
- Join Newcomer Chat and ask precise questions when you need help.
- For retail groups, distinguish premade cross-faction activities from random queues and check the current activity description.
- Check the current Free Trial terms before assuming that a level cap, subscription requirement, or Classic exclusion still applies.
