The best work-from-home accessory is the one that fixes a specific mismatch between your body, devices and desk. A laptop stand paired with a separate keyboard and mouse can let you set the screen and your hands independently. A monitor riser can help only when the display is too low. A footrest is useful when your chair and desk cannot let your feet rest flat. Document holders and wrist supports are task-dependent, not automatic upgrades.
These changes are about fit, neutral positioning and less awkward reaching—not a guaranteed productivity boost. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) states: “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.” Use the guidance below to identify your problem, adjust what you already own, and buy only what closes the remaining gap.

Start with the workstation problem, not a shopping list
Before buying anything, sit at your normal desk for a typical work session and note what forces you to reach, bend, twist or hold a joint at an awkward angle. OSHA’s Computer Workstations eTool and its evaluation checklist treat the chair, desk, monitor, keyboard, mouse and accessories as one system. An accessory that solves one issue can create another if it reduces legroom, pushes the keyboard too far away or raises the screen without providing a comfortable typing position.

The table is a decision aid, not a prescription. If your current setup already lets you work comfortably, buying an accessory may add cost and clutter without solving a problem.

Build a laptop workstation that separates screen and input height
Why the built-in keyboard creates a compromise
A laptop combines the display and keyboard in one fixed unit. Raising the screen to reduce neck flexion also raises the keyboard, which can make your shoulders lift or wrists bend. Leaving the laptop flat may keep your hands comfortable while forcing you to look downward. Mayo Clinic’s office ergonomics guide suggests considering a laptop stand with a separate keyboard and mouse for desk work. OSHA likewise advises that laptops used as a primary computer for intensive keyboard work should have an auxiliary full-sized keyboard and monitor; see its additional information.
Set up the stand, keyboard and mouse
- Place the stand on a stable, level part of the desk. Make sure its base does not wobble and that ventilation openings are not blocked. Check that the stand supports your laptop’s size and weight before leaving it unattended.
- Raise the laptop screen to a comfortable viewing height. Aim for the top of the display to be at or slightly below eye level when you are sitting upright. Your own visual needs, screen size and chair height determine the final position.
- Put the external keyboard close to your body. Keep your elbows near your sides and your forearms roughly level rather than reaching forward.
- Place the mouse beside the keyboard. It should be close enough that you do not repeatedly extend your shoulder or rotate your torso.
- Check the laptop’s role. If you use it only as a screen, set brightness and viewing angle for comfortable reading. If you need to type briefly on the built-in keys, lower or reposition the unit for that task rather than maintaining a raised-screen compromise for hours.
Searches for a “laptop stand for desk” cover many shapes, but the label tells you little about fit. Prioritize a stable platform, useful height range, a footprint that leaves room for the keyboard and mouse, and compatibility with your laptop. A stand that is too tall, narrow or deep can move the screen into a new awkward position.
Position a monitor before deciding you need a riser
Use alignment and distance as the test
OSHA’s monitor guidance recommends placing the monitor directly in front of you and at least 20 inches away. Mayo Clinic describes a 20-to-40-inch viewing range and recommends the top of the screen be at or slightly below eye level. These figures are adjustment guidance, not a universal pass/fail test: text size, screen dimensions, eyesight, chair position and task all affect a comfortable distance.

- Move it far enough away that you can read without leaning forward; enlarge text instead of pushing the screen into an uncomfortable position.
- Set the top edge at eye level or slightly below while your head is in a relaxed, upright position.
- Tilt the panel only enough to avoid glare and keep the image easy to read.
When a monitor stand or riser is worthwhile
Use a riser when the monitor cannot reach a comfortable height on its own. Measure the resulting position with your actual chair and desk, not while standing beside them. Confirm that the base remains stable, that ports and controls are accessible, and that the riser does not consume the desk depth needed for the keyboard. If the monitor is already centered, far enough away and at a comfortable height, a riser is unnecessary.

Choose a footrest only when the chair and desk cannot fit you
A footrest is conditional, not a default ergonomic purchase. OSHA’s evaluation checklist connects footrest use with feet that cannot rest flat because workstation adjustability is insufficient. A common example is raising the chair so your elbows align with a desk that is too high; your feet may then dangle.
- Adjust chair height so your shoulders can relax and your forearms can approach the keyboard without lifting.
- Check whether both feet rest flat on the floor while your thighs remain supported.
- If they do not, see whether the desk, chair or keyboard tray can be adjusted instead.
- If no adjustment solves the gap, add a stable footrest with enough surface area for both feet.
Mayo Clinic notes that a sturdy stool or a stack of sturdy books can serve the same purpose as a dedicated footrest. Any substitute must be stable, unable to slide unexpectedly and positioned so it does not block chair movement. Do not use a soft, unstable object that collapses or rocks under your feet.
Use a document holder for reference-heavy tasks
If your work involves printed forms, books or handwritten notes, repeatedly looking down or sideways can create unnecessary neck movement. OSHA’s document-holder guidance recommends accounting for the monitor, keyboard and chair when choosing placement. When the screen is the main focus, set the holder at a similar height and distance to the monitor; when reading the document is primary, position it for that task without forcing the keyboard out of reach.

Placement options
- Between keyboard and monitor: useful for frequent copy work if the holder does not push the keyboard toward the desk edge.
- Beside the monitor: suitable when you alternate between a document and the screen and can keep your head rotation small.
- Next to the laptop: practical for a compact setup, provided the page is stable and does not block ventilation or ports.
Look for a broad, stable base, an adjustable angle and a ledge that holds pages without covering the text. A document holder is optional; it is justified by the task, not by the existence of a desk.

Treat wrist and palm supports as fit-sensitive tools
OSHA’s wrist and palm support guidance says a support can help facilitate a neutral wrist angle when used properly. It should not pin your hands in place. While typing, hands should move freely and remain elevated above the support; the pad contacts the heel of the hand or palm when you rest.
Set one up safely
- Bring the keyboard close enough that your forearms do not reach forward.
- Align the support with the keyboard’s front edge so there is no abrupt height step.
- Keep wrists in line with forearms rather than bending them up, down or sideways.
- Lift your hands clear of the pad while typing; use it for brief pauses, not as a platform that bears your wrists continuously during keystrokes.
- If the support causes pressure, numbness or a sharper bend, remove it and reassess the keyboard height and angle.
There is no universal support thickness. Match the pad to your keyboard and chair height, and leave enough desk space for the mouse to sit beside the keys.
Fix desk layout and chair settings before adding accessories
OSHA’s workstation-components guidance emphasizes component placement, while its desk guidance covers clearance and adjustability. A well-adjusted chair should support your back, legs, buttocks and arms. Desk height and legroom determine whether the rest of the setup can work.
Make the basic adjustments
- Set chair height so your feet are flat or supported and your knees are comfortable.
- Use the backrest to support your back without forcing your torso forward.
- Keep keyboard and mouse close, with forearms supported as appropriate and shoulders relaxed.
- Place frequently used items—phone, notebook, controls and reference material—in front of you and within easy reach.
- Keep enough clearance under the desk for your knees and for small posture changes during the day.
- Remove objects that force the mouse, keyboard or chair to one side.
These changes often solve the original complaint without any purchase. An organizer or tray is worthwhile only if it preserves this clearance and keeps essential items accessible.

A step-by-step fit check for a new accessory
- Describe the symptom precisely. “My neck bends down to read” leads to a different solution than “my feet dangle.”
- Change one variable at a time. Move the monitor, then test; adjust chair height, then test. This reveals which change helps and prevents a pile of accessories from masking the cause.
- Test during the real task. Read, type, use the mouse, make calls or review paper as you normally do. A position that feels fine for two minutes may fail during a longer session.
- Check reach and clearance. Confirm that the accessory does not push input devices away, block ports, reduce legroom or require a twist to use.
- Recheck alignment. The monitor should be centered; the keyboard and mouse should be close; wrists and forearms should stay aligned; feet should be supported.
- Keep, modify or remove it. If the accessory does not solve the original mismatch without creating a new one, return it, reposition it or stop using it.
Buying criteria that matter more than the product label
OSHA’s purchasing guide supports evaluating an accessory in the context of the whole workstation. Compare the following characteristics for the category you are considering:
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Adjustability and fit | Does it provide the height, angle or reach your body and task require? Can you change it after moving the chair or desk? |
| Stability and compatibility | Will it safely support the laptop, monitor, pages or feet? Are dimensions, weight limits and attachment points compatible? |
| Desk footprint | Will it leave enough room for the keyboard, mouse, documents and leg clearance? |
| Task suitability | Do you type intensively, switch between paper and screen, use a numeric keypad or need frequent mouse movement? |
| Ease of adjustment | Can you reposition it without tools, or will a fixed installation discourage changes when your task changes? |
| Durability and safety | Are edges smooth, bases non-slip and moving parts secure? Does the item remain stable when loaded? |
No product category is automatically ergonomic. A highly adjustable stand that wobbles is less useful than a simple stable support at the right height. Likewise, a wrist pad that forces your hands upward is counterproductive even if it is marketed for comfort.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
Your neck still hurts after raising the laptop
Check whether you are still typing on the elevated built-in keyboard. Keep the screen raised and move typing to a separate keyboard and mouse. If the external keyboard is too far away, bring it closer before changing the stand height again.
Your shoulders feel tense with an external keyboard
The keyboard may be too high, too far forward or angled steeply. Lower the chair or keyboard surface while keeping the display at a readable height, then move the mouse alongside the keys so the arm does not reach outward.

The monitor riser makes the screen feel too high
Remove part of the added height and reassess from your normal seated position. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level for many users, but the comfortable position depends on your vision, screen size and task. Do not keep a riser simply because it is intended to raise monitors.
A footrest makes your legs feel cramped
Check that the footrest is not too tall or too close to the chair. Revisit chair height and desk clearance; a lower support or a different chair setting may preserve more room. The objective is stable foot support, not a particular product.
The document holder blocks the screen or keyboard
Move it beside the monitor or adjust its height and angle. Keep the page close enough to reduce repeated head movement while preserving a direct view of the screen and an easy reach to the keyboard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe wrist support causes pressure
Lift your hands while typing and let the support contact only during rest. If pressure remains, remove the pad and correct keyboard height, distance or angle. A support is optional; neutral alignment and free hand movement come first.
How to reassess the setup over time
Work patterns change when you switch between typing, meetings, reading and creative tasks. Recheck the arrangement after changing chairs, desks, monitors or laptops, and whenever a new symptom appears. Keep adjustable components easy to move so the workstation can match the task rather than locking you into one position.
Use discomfort as a prompt to inspect fit, not as proof that you need another accessory. If pain, numbness or weakness persists or worsens, stop experimenting with equipment and seek advice from a qualified health professional.
