A WordPress website health check helps you spot issues that can affect speed, security, uptime, and long-term reliability. The built-in Site Health tool reviews your installation, server environment, plugins, themes, and configuration, then highlights items that may need attention before they turn into bigger problems.

Some warnings are simple, such as updating WordPress core, removing inactive themes, or enabling automatic updates. Others point to deeper concerns, including outdated PHP versions, missing security modules, slow database performance, disabled background tasks, or unreliable HTTPS setup.

Improving Site Health is not about chasing a perfect score at all costs. It is about understanding what each recommendation means, prioritizing the changes that matter most, and creating a regular maintenance routine that keeps your WordPress site fast, secure, backed up, and dependable.

What WordPress Site Health Checks Measure

WordPress Site Health is a built-in diagnostic area that checks whether your website is running on a stable, secure, and modern foundation. It does not measure design quality, SEO rankings, or whether visitors like your content. Instead, it looks at technical conditions that affect performance, security, reliability, and compatibility. You can think of it as a maintenance checklist for the software and server environment behind your site.

The checks are grouped into status items that usually appear as critical issues, recommended improvements, or passed tests. A critical issue means something may be actively harming your site or increasing risk, such as an outdated PHP version, a failed background update, or no working HTTPS connection. Recommended improvements are often less urgent but still worth addressing, such as removing inactive plugins, enabling persistent object caching on busy sites, or updating older database software.

Core areas checked by WordPress Site Health

  • WordPress version and updates: Confirms that WordPress core can update properly and that automatic background updates are working as expected.
  • PHP and database versions: Checks whether your server uses supported versions of PHP and database software, which affects speed, compatibility, and security.
  • HTTPS status: Verifies that your site uses a valid SSL certificate and loads securely over HTTPS.
  • Plugin and theme status: Looks for inactive themes, inactive plugins, available updates, and potential compatibility concerns.
  • Scheduled events: Reviews whether WordPress cron tasks are running, which matters for scheduled posts, backups, email queues, and plugin automation.
  • REST API access: Tests whether the REST API is available, since the block editor, plugins, mobile apps, and integrations may rely on it.
  • Loopback requests: Checks whether WordPress can make requests to itself, which is used by background processes and some update routines.
  • Debug and security settings: Flags settings such as visible debug errors that should not be enabled on a live production site.

These tests are useful because many WordPress problems begin outside the visible pages of the site. For example, a page may appear normal to visitors while scheduled backups have stopped running because cron events are failing. A contact form may break because the REST API is blocked by a security rule. A slow admin dashboard may point to an old PHP version or a plugin conflict. Site Health brings these signals into one place so owners can investigate before a small technical issue becomes downtime, data loss, or a security incident.

Site Health also includes an Info view that lists details about your installation, server, database, file permissions, active theme, active plugins, media handling, and constants defined in configuration files. This information is especially helpful when working with a developer, host, or plugin support team. Rather than guessing, you can share specific version numbers and environment details, making it easier to identify whether a problem comes from hosting, WordPress core, a plugin, a theme, or custom code.

How to Find and Interpret Your Site Health Status

To view your WordPress Site Health report, sign in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Tools > Site Health. The first tab, Status, shows a list of checks grouped by severity. The second tab, Info, provides technical details about your WordPress installation, server, database, themes, plugins, file permissions, and active features. Site Health is available in modern WordPress versions, so if you do not see it, update WordPress core or confirm that your administrator role has access to the Tools menu.

The Status screen usually separates results into critical issues, recommended improvements, and passed tests. Critical issues are items that may affect security, uptime, or core functionality, such as a very old PHP version, failed background updates, missing HTTPS, or a database connection problem. Recommended improvements are less urgent but still worth addressing, such as removing inactive themes, enabling persistent object caching on larger sites, or updating optional PHP modules. Passed tests confirm that WordPress found no problem in that area during the scan.

How to read the Site Health score

Older WordPress versions displayed a percentage score, but current Site Health screens focus more on actionable issues than a single grade. Treat the page as a prioritized checklist rather than a perfect measurement of your website’s quality. A site can have a clean Site Health screen and still be slow because of oversized images, poor hosting, render-blocking scripts, or heavy third-party tracking. Likewise, one warning does not always mean the site is broken; it means WordPress detected a condition that deserves review.

  • Critical issues: Review immediately, especially if they involve security, failed updates, HTTPS, PHP, database health, or REST API failures.
  • Recommended improvements: Schedule these into regular maintenance, particularly performance and cleanup tasks.
  • Passed tests: Use these to confirm that key parts of the environment are working as expected.
  • Info tab: Use this when contacting a developer, host, or plugin vendor because it contains version numbers and server details needed for troubleshooting.

When opening an individual warning, WordPress usually provides a short description and a link to more details. Read the message carefully before making changes. For example, a warning about inactive plugins does not mean every inactive plugin is dangerous, but inactive code can still become outdated and clutter your admin area. A warning about missing PHP modules may only matter if a plugin or feature depends on that module. If you are unsure, copy the relevant details from the Info tab and ask your hosting provider or developer before changing server settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical way to interpret Site Health is to review it in order: address critical issues first, then performance-related recommendations, then housekeeping tasks. After each fix, refresh the Site Health page and test key parts of the site, such as checkout, forms, search, login, and any custom functionality. For business-critical websites, make changes on a staging site when possible, confirm the results, then repeat the update on production. This turns Site Health from a warning screen into a reliable maintenance workflow.

Fixing Common Performance Issues

Performance warnings in WordPress Site Health often point to issues that slow down page loading, increase server load, or make the admin area feel sluggish. The most common messages relate to outdated PHP versions, missing caching, slow loopback requests, REST API problems, excessive autoloaded options, and background tasks that fail to run reliably. Start by treating these warnings as a checklist: fix the server-level items first, then move on to plugins, themes, media files, and database cleanup.

A good first step is to confirm that your site is running a supported, modern PHP version. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Tools > Site Health > Info and open the Server section. If PHP is outdated, ask your host to move the site to a current version supported by WordPress and your plugins. Before switching PHP versions, create a backup and test the change on a staging site if available. After the upgrade, check the front end, admin screens, checkout pages, forms, and any membership or booking features.

High-impact fixes to try first

  • Enable page caching: Use your host’s built-in cache or a reputable caching plugin to serve static versions of pages. This reduces the work WordPress does on each visit.
  • Use object caching where available: Redis or Memcached can speed up database-heavy sites, especially WooCommerce, membership, and learning management sites.
  • Optimize images: Compress large uploads, resize images to the dimensions actually used, and serve modern formats such as WebP when supported.
  • Reduce unused plugins: Deactivate and delete plugins that duplicate features, load heavy scripts, or are no longer needed.
  • Review theme performance: Bloated themes can add unnecessary CSS, JavaScript, fonts, and page builder assets to every page.

If Site Health reports that scheduled events are late or that loopback requests are failing, background processes may not be running correctly. WordPress uses WP-Cron for tasks such as publishing scheduled posts, checking for updates, sending some plugin emails, and processing queues. Late scheduled events can be caused by low traffic, blocked requests, security plugins, DNS issues, or server restrictions. For business-critical sites, consider setting up a real server cron job to call wp-cron.php at regular intervals, and ask your host to confirm that loopback requests are not blocked.

Database performance can also affect Site Health and overall speed. Over time, WordPress may accumulate post revisions, transients, spam comments, expired sessions, and plugin data from tools you no longer use. Use a trusted database optimization plugin or your host’s tools to clean unnecessary data, but avoid aggressive cleanup without a backup. Pay special attention to warnings about large autoloaded options, because these values are loaded on nearly every WordPress request. Large autoloaded data often comes from plugins that store bulky settings, cached data, or logs in the options table.

After each change, measure the result instead of guessing. Revisit Tools > Site Health, then test key pages with tools such as PageSpeed Insights, WebPageTest, or your hosting control panel’s performance metrics. Check both the public site and the WordPress admin area. A fast homepage is useful, but a slow checkout, dashboard, search page, or product category can still hurt visitors and site managers. Work in small batches, document what changed, and keep the improvements that produce measurable gains without breaking functionality.

Improving WordPress Security and Updates

Many Site Health security messages are tied to outdated software, weak authentication, or server features that expose your site to avoidable risk. WordPress checks whether core files are current, whether automatic background updates can run, whether HTTPS is active, and whether your site is using supported versions of PHP and database software. Treat these warnings as maintenance tasks rather than one-time fixes, because security depends on keeping WordPress, plugins, themes, users, and hosting settings in good condition over time.

Start with the WordPress dashboard updates screen. Go to Dashboard > Updates and install any available WordPress core update, then update plugins and themes. If you manage a business site, membership site, or online store, take a backup first and apply updates during a low-traffic period. After updating, check the front end, contact forms, checkout flow, login page, and any custom features. For smaller sites with standard plugins, enabling automatic updates for trusted plugins can reduce the time your site spends exposed to known vulnerabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security settings to review in Site Health

  • HTTPS status: Your site should load over HTTPS and redirect HTTP requests to the secure version. If Site Health reports a problem, confirm that your SSL certificate is active in your hosting panel and update the WordPress Address and Site Address under Settings > General if needed.
  • Background updates: WordPress relies on scheduled tasks to install maintenance and security releases. If these are disabled, check whether a security plugin, hosting rule, or constant in wp-config.php is blocking automatic updates.
  • Inactive themes and plugins: Remove anything you are not using. Deactivated code can still contain vulnerable files, so keeping unused extensions “just in case” increases risk.
  • User accounts: Delete old administrator accounts, lower permissions for users who do not need full access, and require strong passwords for every account with publishing or management rights.

Update habits matter as much as the update button itself. Before installing a major WordPress release or a large plugin update, review the changelog and confirm compatibility with your current PHP version. Update one group at a time when possible: core first, then plugins, then themes. If something breaks, this makes it easier to identify the source. On higher-value sites, use a staging environment to test changes before applying them to production. Many managed WordPress hosts include staging tools, backups, SSL management, and update controls in the hosting dashboard.

Strengthen login security alongside software updates. Use unique administrator usernames, enforce long passwords, and enable two-factor authentication for administrators, editors, shop managers, and any account that can access customer data. Limit login attempts or use a reputable firewall service to reduce automated password attacks. If you allow file editing from the WordPress dashboard, consider disabling the built-in theme and plugin editor so a compromised admin account cannot easily modify site files from the browser.

Finally, connect security work to recovery planning. A fully updated site can still be affected by a bad plugin release, compromised password, server issue, or accidental deletion. Keep off-site backups, verify that restores work, and make sure at least one trusted person knows how to access hosting, DNS, backups, and WordPress admin. When Site Health shows fewer security warnings, your site is not “finished”; it is simply in a stronger position for the next maintenance cycle.

Reviewing Plugins, Themes, and PHP Compatibility

Plugins, themes, and PHP version support are closely connected to WordPress site health. A slow admin area, fatal errors, broken layouts, failed updates, and security warnings often trace back to outdated extensions or code that no longer works well with the server environment. Reviewing these areas regularly helps keep the site stable and reduces the chance of conflicts after WordPress core updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start in Dashboard → Updates, then check Plugins → Installed Plugins and Appearance → Themes. Update anything that has a trusted update available, but do it in a controlled way: take a backup first, update one major plugin at a time, and test key pages afterward. For ecommerce, membership, booking, learning management, or multilingual sites, test checkout, login, forms, account pages, and any custom workflows after each update.

How to review installed plugins

A healthy WordPress site usually has only the plugins it actively needs. Too many plugins can increase database queries, load extra scripts, create overlapping features, and expand the attack surface. The number of plugins matters less than their quality, but unused or poorly maintained plugins should be removed rather than simply deactivated.

  • Delete inactive plugins that are no longer needed. Deactivated plugins can still contain vulnerable files if left on the server.
  • Check the “Last updated” date in the WordPress plugin directory or vendor changelog. Plugins abandoned for a long time may become incompatible with newer WordPress or PHP versions.
  • Look for duplicate functionality, such as multiple caching, SEO, security, form, or image optimization plugins trying to manage the same tasks.
  • Review plugin reputation by checking support activity, recent reviews, active installations, and whether the developer publishes clear changelogs.
  • Replace heavy plugins if they load assets site-wide for features used on only one page, especially sliders, page builders, analytics add-ons, and social sharing tools.

How to review themes safely

Your active theme affects front-end performance, accessibility, mobile rendering, and compatibility with WordPress blocks. Keep the active theme updated, and remove old themes you do not use. It is generally fine to keep one default WordPress theme, such as the latest Twenty Twenty theme, as a fallback for troubleshooting. If your site uses a child theme, update the parent theme carefully and confirm that custom templates, menus, widgets, and style overrides still work as expected.

Theme issues often appear after PHP upgrades or WordPress core changes. Watch for deprecated function warnings, missing template files, layout shifts, and JavaScript errors in browser developer tools. If a theme bundles outdated copies of page builders, sliders, or custom post type frameworks, update those bundled components through the theme vendor or consider moving to a better-maintained theme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checking PHP compatibility

PHP is the server-side language WordPress runs on, and newer supported PHP versions usually improve speed and security. In WordPress, check Tools → Site Health → Info → Server to see the current PHP version. Your hosting control panel may also show this under PHP settings, MulHP Manager, or a similar area. If Site Health reports that your PHP version is outdated, plan an upgrade instead of ignoring the warning.

  1. Confirm compatibility by checking your critical plugins and theme documentation for supported PHP versions.
  2. Create a full backup of files and database before changing PHP.
  3. Test on staging if your host provides a staging site. Upgrade PHP there first and browse the site like a real visitor.
  4. Enable error logging temporarily so warnings and fatal errors can be found without displaying them publicly.
  5. Upgrade PHP during a low-traffic period, then test forms, checkout, search, user login, admin screens, and scheduled tasks.

If the site breaks after a PHP upgrade, switch back to the previous version temporarily and identify the incompatible plugin or theme. Replace unsupported software rather than staying on an old PHP version long term. Keeping plugins, themes, and PHP aligned gives WordPress a stronger foundation for performance, security, and reliable updates.

Setting Up Backups, Monitoring, and Ongoing Maintenance

A healthy WordPress site is not something you fix once and ignore. Backups, monitoring, and routine maintenance protect you from failed updates, malware, hosting issues, accidental content changes, and database problems. WordPress Site Health can point out technical concerns, but it does not replace a recovery plan. If your site breaks after an update or your host has an outage, a recent backup and clear maintenance routine can be the difference between a short interruption and a serious business problem.

Start by setting up automated backups that include both your WordPress files and database. The database stores posts, pages, users, orders, form entries, settings, and plugin data, while the files include themes, plugins, uploads, and custom code. Store backups away from the same server that hosts your website, such as cloud storage or a dedicated backup service. Keeping backups only inside your hosting account is risky because a server failure, malware infection, or account suspension could make both your live site and backups unavailable.

Recommended backup schedule

  • Small brochure sites: run a full backup at least weekly, plus a backup before WordPress core, plugin, or theme updates.
  • Active blogs or membership sites: back up the database daily and files weekly, with extra backups before major changes.
  • WooCommerce or high-traffic sites: use real-time or hourly database backups so orders, customer records, and inventory changes are not lost.

Backups are only useful if they can be restored. Test your restore process on a staging site or local environment before you need it in an emergency. Confirm that media files load, forms work, user accounts remain intact, and critical plugin settings are preserved. If your backup tool offers one-click restores, still review the restored site carefully, especially after database-heavy plugins such as WooCommerce, learning management systems, booking tools, or multilingual plugins.

Monitoring helps you catch problems before visitors or customers report them. At a minimum, use uptime monitoring to alert you when your site is unavailable. Add security scanning for malware and file changes, performance monitoring for slow pages, and error logging for PHP warnings or fatal errors. Many hosts provide basic monitoring, but dedicated tools can offer faster alerts and more detail. Google Search Console is also useful for spotting indexing errors, mobile usability issues, hacked content warnings, and Core Web Vitals problems.

Monthly maintenance checklist

  • Review WordPress Site Health for new critical issues or recommended improvements.
  • Update WordPress core, plugins, and themes after confirming a recent backup exists.
  • Remove inactive plugins and themes that are not needed.
  • Check that backups are completing successfully and can be downloaded or restored.
  • Review admin users and remove accounts that no longer need access.
  • Scan for malware, suspicious files, and unexpected changes.
  • Test contact forms, checkout flows, login pages, search, and other business-critical features.
  • Review storage usage, database size, broken links, and 404 errors.

For safer updates, use a staging site when possible. Apply updates there first, test the main pages and key workflows, then update the live site. This is especially helpful for sites with custom themes, page builders, WooCommerce, or complex plugin combinations. If you manage updates directly on production, update in small batches instead of changing everything at once. That makes it easier to identify the source of a problem if something breaks.

Good maintenance also includes documentation. Keep a simple record of your hosting provider, domain registrar, DNS provider, backup tool, security plugin, administrator accounts, and any custom code or integrations. Document recurring tasks and who is responsible for them. As your site grows, this reduces confusion and makes troubleshooting faster. With reliable backups, active monitoring, and a consistent maintenance schedule, WordPress Site Health becomes part of a broader system that keeps your website secure, stable, and ready for future updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Site Health score should my WordPress website have?

You do not need a perfect score, but you should aim to fix all critical issues and review any recommended improvements. A healthy site usually has updated WordPress core, plugins, themes, a supported PHP version, working HTTPS, scheduled events running properly, and no major performance or security warnings.

Is it safe to ignore recommended Site Health improvements?

Some recommended items are not urgent, but they can still affect speed, security, or reliability over time. For example, an outdated PHP version, inactive plugins, or missing persistent object caching may not break your site immediately, but they can increase risk or slow down busy websites.

How do I know whether a Site Health warning is caused by my hosting provider?

Warnings about PHP version, database version, HTTPS, loopback requests, REST API errors, cron jobs, or missing server modules often relate to hosting configuration. Check your hosting control panel first, then contact support with the exact Site Health message so they can confirm whether the server needs an update or configuration change.

Should I update WordPress, plugins, and themes right away?

Security updates should be applied as soon as possible, especially for plugins and themes with known vulnerabilities. For larger feature updates, make a fresh backup first, update on a staging site if available, and check pages, forms, checkout flows, and admin functions afterward.

How often should I check WordPress Site Health?

Check Site Health at least once a month and after major updates, hosting changes, plugin installs, or performance problems. You should also maintain regular backups, remove unused plugins and themes, monitor uptime, and review security alerts so small issues do not become serious outages.

Bottom Line

A WordPress website health check is one of the simplest ways to spot issues before they affect speed, security, or reliability. Use the Site Health screen as a starting point, then review updates, hosting settings, plugins, themes, backups, and maintenance routines to keep your site running smoothly.

Set a regular schedule to check warnings, remove what you do not need, confirm backups are working, and keep your software current. If any server or security recommendation is unclear, ask your host or a trusted WordPress professional before making major changes.
