WordPress vs. Django: Which CMS Is Better for Your Project?

WordPress is usually best for fast, conventional publishing. Django is a framework for custom applications, while django CMS adds editorial page management for Django projects.

For a conventional blog, publication, or business website, WordPress is usually the better starting point. It already includes editorial workflows, media management, themes, user roles, and a large plugin ecosystem. Django itself is not a CMS; it is a Python web framework for building custom websites and applications. If you need a Django-based publishing system, compare WordPress with a product such as django CMS instead.

The right choice depends on whether you are primarily publishing content or building a bespoke application around domain-specific data and workflows.

WordPress and Django are not equivalent products

WordPress is a ready-to-use content management system. Its standard publishing features include drafts, scheduled publication, revisions, public or private content, password protection, user roles, and media management. Themes control presentation, while plugins add functionality. See the WordPress features documentation.

Django is a Python framework. Django’s official FAQ states: “No, Django is not a CMS, or any sort of ‘turnkey product’ in and of itself. It’s a web framework; it’s a programming tool that lets you build websites.” Its automatic admin is a module for managing application data, not a complete public-facing publishing system. Read the Django general FAQ.

That distinction changes the decision. A WordPress site can often begin with configuration and content entry. A Django project requires developers to define the site’s models, views, templates, workflows, and public interface.

Which should you choose?

Your priority Better starting point Reason
Publish a blog, news site, or standard business website quickly WordPress Publishing tools, roles, media handling, themes, and plugins are available as standard or readily extendable features.
Let editors change presentation with existing themes and extensions WordPress Themes can be installed and activated, and plugins extend core functionality.
Build a custom application with domain-specific data and workflows Django Django is a framework for building the application rather than a finished CMS.
Add editorial page composition to an existing Django application django CMS It adds pages, placeholders, plugins, and inline editing while remaining part of a Django project.
Avoid writing code or depending on developers Usually WordPress django CMS documentation describes it as a developer’s CMS and says a working site requires Django code.

These are starting-point recommendations, not guarantees about implementation time or cost. Hosting, custom design, paid extensions, integrations, and the person maintaining the system can change the outcome substantially.

WordPress: the practical choice for publishing

Editorial features are built in

WordPress provides the core objects and workflow a content team expects: posts and pages, drafts, scheduling, revisions, visibility controls, roles, and a media library. That lets an editor work in a publishing interface instead of waiting for a developer to create each content type.

Themes and plugins shorten the path to a finished site

Themes can be previewed, activated, updated, deleted, installed from the directory, uploaded as a ZIP, transferred by FTP, or installed through a hosting control panel. The Appearance Themes documentation describes these management options.

Plugins provide extensions for functions that are not in core WordPress. This breadth is useful when you need a known feature quickly, but every additional extension becomes part of the site’s maintenance surface. WordPress documentation recommends keeping plugins up to date and maintaining a current backup before updating because an update can cause problems. The relevant procedures are in Manage Plugins.

What WordPress does not remove

  • A theme may still need custom design, accessibility work, performance tuning, or template changes.
  • Plugins must be selected for compatibility, support, and fit rather than installed indiscriminately.
  • Updates should be tested and backed up, especially on sites with many extensions or custom code.
  • Hosting and ongoing maintenance remain operational responsibilities, even when a host offers a one-click installer.

WordPress.org says many web hosts offer one-click installation, which can make initial deployment simpler, but that statement does not make every WordPress build effortless or inexpensive.

Django: the better foundation for a custom application

Use Django when the application is the product

Django is appropriate when the site must model specialized data, enforce unusual business rules, connect to internal systems, or expose workflows that do not map cleanly to standard posts and pages. Your team can define the database models, permissions, URLs, APIs, templates, and application behavior in Python and Django.

The admin is not a finished website

Django’s automatic admin can provide a useful interface for staff to manage application records. It does not automatically provide a polished public site, a page builder, a theme marketplace, media workflow, or the editorial experience people associate with a CMS. Those parts must be designed and implemented for the project.

django CMS narrows the publishing gap

django CMS’s philosophy documentation describes a project as “a Django project first.” It integrates page editing into rendered pages and lets editors compose content with reusable plugins and placeholders. It can coexist with custom Django apps, models, views, URL routing, and permissions.

That flexibility comes with project work. Designers work in templates and CSS; developers build Django apps, models, and plugins; editors use the toolbar and structure board. django CMS does not ship ready-made themes, so the frontend, templates, and styling remain your responsibility. Its documentation explicitly characterizes it as a developer’s CMS.

The stable documentation currently identifies django CMS 5.1.3 and provides Django and Python compatibility tables. Check the exact supported combination in the stable django CMS documentation before starting a new deployment or upgrading an existing one, because compatibility and support change.

Compare the decision factors

Publishing and editorial workflow

WordPress is the direct fit when nontechnical users need to create, schedule, revise, categorize, and publish content with minimal development. Django can support any workflow you build, but the workflow is not included merely because Django’s admin exists. django CMS supplies page composition, while custom editorial requirements may still require Django development.

Custom behavior and data

Django has the advantage when the central requirement is an application: complex records, calculations, permissions, integrations, or processes that are unique to your organization. WordPress can be extended with custom post types and plugins, but a heavily customized WordPress installation should be evaluated as an application project rather than assumed to be configuration-only.

Design and frontend control

WordPress offers installable themes and lets teams replace or customize them. Django gives the development team direct control over templates and frontend architecture from the outset. django CMS also expects project-specific templates and CSS rather than supplying a ready-made theme catalog.

Team skills

WordPress suits a team centered on editors, designers, and site administrators, provided someone handles updates and backups. Django or django CMS suits a team comfortable with Python, Django, deployment, frontend development, and maintaining a custom codebase.

Extensions and upgrades

WordPress’s plugin ecosystem can reduce build time, but extension compatibility and update discipline matter. Django’s package ecosystem and custom code offer control, but your team owns more integration and upgrade decisions. Neither platform eliminates maintenance; they distribute it differently.

Cost and operations

There is no evidence-based universal cost winner. Compare hosting, implementation time, paid themes or plugins, custom development, security and backup procedures, monitoring, and the cost of future changes. A managed WordPress site and a custom Django application have different operational profiles, so a hosting price alone is not a meaningful comparison.

A practical selection process

  1. List the content work. Identify who creates content, whether scheduling and revisions are required, how many roles exist, and whether editors need visual page composition.
  2. List the application work. Record specialized data, calculations, integrations, authentication rules, APIs, and workflows that a conventional CMS does not provide.
  3. Separate must-have features from extensions. For WordPress, verify that required plugins are maintained and compatible. For Django, estimate the code needed for the editor interface, frontend, and integrations.
  4. Check the team’s maintenance capacity. Include backups, update testing, dependency upgrades, security response, deployment, and troubleshooting.
  5. Prototype the riskiest requirement. Do not prototype only the homepage. Test the hardest editorial workflow or application integration before committing to the platform.
  6. Confirm versions and deployment. For django CMS, verify the Django/Python combination against the current compatibility tables. For WordPress, test theme and plugin updates on a backup or staging copy.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

WordPress.org currently says “WordPress powers more than 43% of the web,” but that page does not provide a publication year for the figure. It should not be treated as a dated market-share comparison. The official pages cited here document product features and design approaches; they do not establish comparative performance benchmarks, security rankings, usability-test results, or total-cost rankings.

Verdict

Choose WordPress when your primary job is publishing a blog, publication, or business site and you want the shortest route to an editor-ready system. Choose Django when you are building a custom application and want Python and Django to define its behavior. Choose django CMS when that Django application also needs structured, editor-facing page composition and your team accepts the associated development and frontend work.
