Safe WordPress storage maintenance is three separate jobs: reviewing media files that appear unreferenced, limiting database growth from revisions and transients, and automating updates with a tested rollback plan. Treat every scan result as a candidate—not proof that a file is unused—keep a recoverable copy before destructive work, and verify WP-Cron and the current plugin configuration before scheduling anything.
Start with a recovery-first cleanup plan
Do not combine media deletion, database purging and software updates into one unattended task. Each has different failure modes and recovery requirements.
| Task | What it changes | Primary safeguard |
|---|---|---|
| Media review | Files in the uploads area and their registered media records | Inspect references, quarantine or back up candidates, then delete in a reviewed batch |
| Revision control | Future post-revision retention in the posts table | Choose a limit that preserves the site’s editorial recovery needs |
| Transient cleanup | Temporary cached values, sometimes outside the database | Prefer expired-only deletion and ensure application code regenerates misses |
| Plugin and theme updates | Executable site code | Reliable scheduling, update notices and a tested database-and-files rollback path |
Before any irreversible step, confirm that a recent backup can actually be restored. A backup that has never been tested is not a dependable recovery plan. Also record the active theme, page builders, custom plugins, object-cache drop-ins and external systems that may reference your files.
How to safely remove unused media files
A scan identifies candidates, not universal non-use
A media scanner can match references in the content structures and file types its parsers understand. It cannot establish that an image is unused in every possible location. A file may be consumed by a page builder, theme setting, template, custom field, dynamic query, CSS rule, JavaScript, external embed or another site in your workflow.

WordPress housekeeping guidance recommends caution with uncertain images. If storage pressure is urgent, move questionable files to a backup folder rather than deleting them immediately. Check the relevant plugin’s uninstall instructions as well; uninstall behavior differs, and removing a plugin does not guarantee that its data or media references are handled in the same way.
Use a preview-and-staging workflow
- Inventory the site. Note active themes, builders, galleries, custom post types, CDN or off-site consumers and any import/export process that may depend on uploads.
- Run a scan without deleting. Let the scan finish and save its report. On large libraries, use a tool that can resume interrupted work rather than assuming a timed-out request produced a complete result.
- Review each candidate. Open the file, inspect its metadata and search the site’s templates, builder modules, menus, widgets and custom fields. Ask owners of connected sites or workflows whether they use the URL.
- Quarantine or back up uncertain files. Preserve the original path or a clear mapping so restoration is possible. Keep the quarantine accessible only to administrators and monitor links after the move.
- Delete a small, approved batch. Record the date, filenames and operator. Recheck key pages, feeds, sitemaps and external integrations after deletion.
What the current Media Cleaner listing documents
The WordPress.org listing for Media Cleaner shows version 7.2.9 dated September 26, 2026. Its recent changelog describes resumable, checkpointed scan runs whose staged results are published after analysis completes; private quarantine storage; file-identity validation; and idempotent cleanup operations. The listing also records parser, reference-matching and trash-preview fixes.
These are vendor-described features, not an independent performance test. The listing says trash previews are currently restricted to raster images and that results produced by an older scanner version require a fresh scan before deletion. Therefore, check the installed version and its current documentation immediately before acting. A preview is useful for review, but it does not expand the scanner’s parser coverage beyond what the site and tool support.

Can you limit how many WordPress revisions are saved?
Yes. WordPress stores revisions in the posts table, and the WP_POST_REVISIONS setting controls future retention. A limit reduces new accumulation; changing it does not automatically purge every revision already in the database.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWP_POST_REVISIONS value |
Documented behavior | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
Positive integer, such as 5 |
Keep that many revisions per post, plus autosave behavior documented by WordPress; older revisions are removed when the post is updated again | Sites that need a defined recovery window |
true or -1 |
Keep every revision | Editorial or compliance workflows that require complete history, with greater database growth |
false or 0 |
Keep no normal revisions; one autosave per post remains | Only when the owner accepts minimal recovery history |
Autosaves do not overwrite the published post. They provide a recovery copy after an interruption, so disabling normal revisions is not the same as eliminating all recovery data. Choose the limit with editors: a news desk, collaborative team or regulated site may need more history than a small brochure site.
The official revision documentation describes an API function for deleting revisions but does not establish a universal built-in deletion screen in the section reviewed. Use a documented, backup-protected maintenance method rather than assuming that changing the constant cleans old rows immediately.

Is it safe to delete expired transients?
Expired-only deletion is generally the conservative maintenance target, provided applications correctly regenerate a value after a cache miss. A transient’s expiration is a maximum lifetime, not a guaranteed minimum. As the WordPress Transients API documentation explains, a transient can disappear well before its expiration and will not remain after that maximum time.
Persistent object-cache plugins may store transients in memory instead of the database. On a single-site installation they are normally represented in wp_options; on multisite, network-scoped values may use wp_sitemeta. A persistent object-cache drop-in changes where the value is held, so database row counts do not necessarily represent all transient data.

wp transient delete --expired
Run it from the correct WordPress installation with an account that has permission to execute WP-CLI. Deleting every transient is a different operation: it can force plugins and themes to rebuild caches and may create avoidable load. Do not present an all-transient purge as universally beneficial.

How plugin and theme auto-updates work
WordPress introduced plugin and theme auto-updates in version 5.5. The process relies on WP-Cron tasks. If cron scheduling is blocked, unreliable or affected by a plugin combination, an update may not run when expected. Check the site’s Site Health screen for cron errors before depending on automation.
By default, WordPress emails the site owner about successful and failed plugin or theme auto-update attempts. Keep those notices routed to an address that is monitored. An email is a status signal, not a substitute for checking the site after a significant update.

Prepare a rollback route first
- Make scheduled backups of both the database and files, as WordPress recommends before enabling automatic updates.
- Verify that you can restore those backups to a usable site or staging environment.
- Confirm who receives update failure notices and who will investigate them.
- Review compatibility for the active theme, page builder, custom code and PHP environment.
- Enable automatic updates selectively if the site cannot tolerate simultaneous changes.
Separate routine updates from destructive cleanup
Automatic updates can reduce manual work, but they should not silently trigger permanent media deletion or broad database purges. Schedule scans and reports first. Require an explicit review before moving candidates from quarantine to permanent deletion, and retain a fresh backup for any batch that cannot be undone in place.
WordPress housekeeping guidance advises checking for WordPress upgrades at least every three months and no less often than every six months. That is the cadence stated by that guidance, not a universal backup or maintenance policy; the appropriate interval depends on the site’s exposure, staffing and testing process.
A practical maintenance sequence
- Verify configuration. Check the WordPress version, active theme and plugins, WP-Cron health, object-cache drop-ins and the installed media-cleanup version.
- Back up and test recovery. Include database and files, and confirm that restoration works.
- Control future growth. Set
WP_POST_REVISIONSto an intentional value after agreeing on editorial recovery needs. - Clean cache data conservatively. Inspect transient behavior and use
wp transient delete --expiredwhen expired-only removal is the goal. - Scan media in preview mode. Review builder, theme, dynamic, external and off-site references before quarantining anything.
- Re-scan when required. If a cleanup tool reports that older results came from a previous scanner version, obtain a fresh result before deletion.
- Delete reviewed batches only. Keep an audit record and verify important pages and integrations afterward.
- Automate updates separately. Enable only after cron health, notifications and rollback have been confirmed.
Choosing the right control for the problem
| Need | Approach | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce future revision growth | Core WP_POST_REVISIONS setting |
Does not by itself remove existing revisions; lower limits reduce recovery history |
| Remove stale cache entries | WP-CLI transient inspection and expired-only deletion | Requires command-line access; storage may be an object cache rather than the database |
| Find potentially unused uploads | Media-cleanup scanner with preview, staging or quarantine | Results depend on parser coverage and site structure; review is mandatory |
| Reduce manual software maintenance | WordPress plugin and theme auto-updates | Depends on WP-Cron and requires monitored notices plus tested rollback |
A separate third-party cleanup project documents dry-run previews, chunked processing, age thresholds and scheduled cleanup, and recommends real system cron for precise timing on low-traffic sites. Those are claims from that project’s documentation, not an independent benchmark or a general WordPress guarantee. Treat any tool’s advertised batching, scheduling or safety behavior as something to verify against its current documentation and your own staging environment.
