WordPress REST API vs GraphQL: Which Is Better for a Headless Site?

Neither API is universally better. Use the WordPress REST API when core availability, resource-based routes and conventional HTTP integration meet your needs. Choose WPGraphQL when a typed schema, client-selected fields and connected-content queries solve a real problem that justifies installing and maintaining the plugin. Decide after testing representative requests with your own hosting, authentication and cache configuration.

The short answer

A headless WordPress project can work well with either interface. The REST API is built into WordPress, exposes familiar JSON resources and usually requires the least initial setup. WPGraphQL adds a GraphQL schema through an open-source plugin, allowing a client to describe the exact fields and relationships it needs in each query.

REST is the sensible default for straightforward posts, pages, media, taxonomies and other resources. WPGraphQL becomes attractive when a screen combines many related content types, when over-fetching is a recurring problem, or when typed schema tooling materially improves development. GraphQL is not automatically faster: resolver work, database access, cache behavior, network conditions and query shape determine the result.

What each API actually is

WordPress REST API

WordPress describes its REST API as an interface for applications to interact with a site by sending and receiving data as JSON objects. It is part of WordPress core. Clients address resource-oriented routes, use normal HTTP methods and receive JSON responses. Core routes cover content such as posts, pages, media and taxonomies, while plugins and themes can register additional routes or fields.

The API index helps a client discover available namespaces and routes. An OPTIONS request can reveal what a route supports. WordPress also documents parameters for filtering and shaping responses, including embedding related records where a route supports it. This model fits teams already comfortable with HTTP status codes, URL-based caching and conventional endpoint documentation.

WPGraphQL

WPGraphQL is a free, open-source WordPress plugin that provides an extendable GraphQL schema and API. Instead of choosing a resource URL and accepting that endpoint’s response shape, the client sends a query describing the fields it wants. The schema is typed and introspectable, and tools such as GraphiQL can expose available types, fields and arguments while you develop.

GraphQL commonly uses one configured API endpoint, but the important distinction is the schema and query language behind it. A query can request fields from several connected types in one operation. The plugin is an additional dependency: its version, extensions, schema registrations and compatibility with the rest of the WordPress stack become part of your maintenance plan.

REST API vs WPGraphQL at a glance

Decision factor WordPress REST API WPGraphQL What it means
Availability Included in WordPress core Installed as an open-source plugin REST has less initial API setup; GraphQL adds a dependency to update and monitor.
Request model Resource URLs, HTTP methods and JSON responses Queries against an extendable typed schema, usually through one endpoint Choose the model your frontend and team can operate consistently.
Response shape Defined by each route, with documented parameters and supported embedding Client selects fields and can request connected data in the same operation GraphQL can reduce unnecessary fields or round trips for some views; REST can be simpler for individual resources.
Discovery and tooling API index, route documentation and OPTIONS discovery Schema introspection and tools such as GraphiQL Typed exploration is useful when many content types and custom fields are involved.
Custom fields Fields must be registered and exposed by the relevant route or extension Schema extensions expose additional fields; a documented extension exists for ACF field groups Verify the exact fields and versions in your build rather than assuming every custom field is available.
Caching Resource URLs can align with HTTP caching, depending on deployment Requires a query-aware strategy; Smart Cache documentation covers caching, invalidation and persisted queries Compare invalidation rules and hit rates in the infrastructure you will actually run.
Authentication Cookie authentication for logged-in contexts; Application Passwords for HTTPS requests Authorization must be checked for the actual schema fields, resolvers and user roles Neither API choice by itself protects private data.
Operational work Core maintenance plus route-specific customization Plugin compatibility, schema extensions, query governance and cache management Account for the whole lifecycle, not only initial developer convenience.

How the request models differ

A REST request asks for a resource

A headless frontend might request a posts collection from a route such as /wp-json/wp/v2/posts, then follow links or make additional requests for authors, media or related taxonomies. Query parameters can filter or limit the collection, and supported embedding can include related records in the response. The exact fields and filters depend on the route and the plugins that registered it.

GET /wp-json/wp/v2/posts?per_page=10&_embed

This is easy to inspect with ordinary HTTP tooling and maps naturally to cache keys based on URLs. The trade-off is that a complex page may require several resource requests, or may receive fields that the route returns even when the component uses only a subset.

A GraphQL request asks for a shape

With WPGraphQL, the client describes the fields and relationships needed by a view. A simplified query could request ten posts, each post’s title, its featured image URL and the author’s name in one operation:

query RecentPosts { posts(first: 10) { nodes { title featuredImage { node { sourceUrl } } author { node { name } } } } }

The field names, arguments and relationship types must exist in the site’s schema. Introspection and GraphiQL help developers discover those names. A single operation does not eliminate backend work: each resolver can trigger database queries, permission checks or expensive custom code.

When the REST API is the better choice

Your content needs are resource-shaped

If the frontend mostly reads posts, pages, media and taxonomies using routes that already meet the requirement, REST avoids adding a plugin. It is also a good fit for integrations that already expect conventional HTTP methods, status codes and URL-based resources.

You want the smallest dependency surface

Because REST ships with WordPress core, there is no separate GraphQL plugin to keep compatible with WordPress, themes and other extensions. That does not make REST maintenance-free: custom post types, metadata and fields still need deliberate registration and testing. It does reduce the number of moving parts in the API layer.

Your infrastructure is built around HTTP caching

Distinct resource URLs can work naturally with an existing reverse proxy or CDN. The cache still has to vary correctly for query parameters, authentication and content updates, but your team can use familiar HTTP controls rather than introducing query normalization and persisted-operation policies.

When WPGraphQL is worth the extra dependency

A page needs connected content

Editorial pages often combine posts, authors, categories, featured media, navigation and custom entities. GraphQL lets a component request those relationships in one declared operation. That can reduce client orchestration and make the data contract visible beside the component that consumes it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Different clients need different fields

A mobile client, a search result and a long-form article rarely need identical payloads. Field selection can reduce transfer of unused data and avoid building many narrowly tailored REST routes. It is a benefit to validate with your real response sizes and network conditions, not a promise of faster rendering.

Typed schema tooling improves team velocity

Introspection gives developers a discoverable contract of types, fields and arguments. GraphiQL can make exploration easier than reading several route documents. The advantage is strongest when multiple teams share the schema or when the frontend generates types from the schema.

You can maintain schema extensions

Custom fields are not automatically solved by choosing GraphQL. Required fields must be exposed in the schema, and an extension such as WPGraphQL for ACF may be needed for ACF field groups. Confirm field names, nullability, relationship behavior and plugin-version compatibility before committing to the architecture.

Is GraphQL faster than the WordPress REST API?

There is no universal winner. GraphQL may reduce transferred bytes or browser round trips when one screen needs a carefully selected set of related fields. A REST implementation may perform equally well, or better, when a single optimized route already returns the required data and benefits from a warm HTTP cache.

GraphQL can also be slower if a query activates expensive resolvers, causes repeated database work or defeats a cache that would have served a stable REST URL. Conversely, a REST page that makes many uncached requests can spend more time in network overhead. Performance is a property of the complete application, not of the protocol name.

Benchmark the application you will ship

  1. Define equivalent data. Use the same records, fields, relationships and authorization state in both implementations.
  2. Measure cold and warm caches. Record first-request behavior separately from repeated requests after the CDN, reverse proxy and application caches are populated.
  3. Capture more than transfer time. Record request count, transferred bytes, backend response time, database queries or resolver load, and frontend rendering behavior.
  4. Test realistic network conditions. Include the mobile or geographic conditions that matter to your audience, not only a local development connection.
  5. Repeat after content changes. Verify invalidation when an editor updates a post, media item, relationship or custom field.
  6. Set acceptance thresholds. Choose the API that meets your latency, load and maintainability targets; do not generalize from a single synthetic query.

WPGraphQL’s project comparison documentation includes an illustrative 100-post example, but it does not establish controlled, generalizable conditions. Treat it as an explanation of possible query-shape benefits, not as a benchmark for your site.

Can you fetch related WordPress content in one request?

Yes, but the mechanism differs. REST can return related data when a route supports embedding or when the client follows related endpoints. You may need multiple requests for relationships that are not exposed by the chosen route, and custom routes may be required to create a page-specific aggregate response.

WPGraphQL can request connected fields in one operation when those relationships are registered in the schema. That reduces client-side coordination, but it does not guarantee one database query or low server cost. Inspect resolver behavior and measure the query under production-like data volume.

Setup path for a REST-based headless site

  1. Inventory content. List the post types, taxonomies, media, authors, metadata and private records the frontend must read or write.
  2. Inspect core routes. Use the API index and route documentation to confirm that each required resource and field is available. Use OPTIONS where you need to understand supported methods or arguments.
  3. Register missing data deliberately. Expose custom post types and fields through documented REST registration and verify the response for each permission level.
  4. Design request shapes. Apply filters, pagination, field selection or supported embedding so a page receives only practical data. Record the resulting URLs as cache keys.
  5. Build authentication tests. Test anonymous, editor and administrator behavior for every read and write route, including password-protected content.
  6. Implement invalidation. Purge or revalidate cached resources when editors change posts, taxonomies, media or relationships.
  7. Monitor the production path. Track status codes, response time, payload size, cache hits and backend load after launch.

Setup path for WPGraphQL

  1. Confirm the dependency policy. Install WPGraphQL only if its query and schema advantages justify another plugin and its upgrade testing.
  2. Map the required schema. Identify every type, field, connection, argument and mutation the frontend needs. Use introspection or GraphiQL against a non-production environment.
  3. Expose custom fields intentionally. Add the appropriate schema extension for your field system, such as the documented ACF integration, and verify nullability and permissions.
  4. Write representative operations. Keep queries close to component needs while avoiding unbounded connections and deeply nested requests that can become expensive.
  5. Set query controls. Decide whether persisted queries, depth or complexity limits, rate limits and operation allow-lists are needed for public clients.
  6. Choose a cache strategy. Evaluate query normalization, persisted operations, invalidation events and the capabilities of your CDN or reverse proxy. Smart Cache documentation covers relevant patterns, but your deployment still needs configuration and testing.
  7. Test schema security. Run each operation as anonymous and as every relevant role. Confirm that custom resolvers do not reveal fields that WordPress capabilities would normally protect.
  8. Load-test real shapes. Measure nested queries at realistic content volumes, including cache misses and editor updates.

Authentication, authorization and privacy

Public WordPress content is generally available through the REST API. Private or password-protected content, user data, custom post types and metadata may require authentication or explicit configuration. Treat every route and field as a separate authorization surface.

For REST requests made in a logged-in WordPress context, cookie authentication is standard; nonces address cross-site request forgery risks. WordPress has supported Application Passwords since version 5.6. They are sent over HTTPS using Basic authentication and are intended for application access. The separate Basic Authentication plugin is documented for development and testing; use Application Passwords rather than that plugin for normal HTTPS integrations.

WPGraphQL requires the same discipline at the schema level. A publicly reachable endpoint does not prove that every field is safe, and a custom resolver can accidentally bypass an intended capability check. Test operations under each relevant role, review mutations separately from queries and verify that errors do not disclose private data.

Custom fields and content modeling

REST exposure depends on how a field is registered and how the relevant route serializes it. A field present in the WordPress editor is not automatically present in a public REST response. Document the field name, data type, permissions and update behavior, then test it after plugin and WordPress upgrades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GraphQL exposes fields only when they are registered in its schema. The documented WPGraphQL for ACF extension can make ACF field groups queryable, but you still need to confirm which groups, subfields and relationships are available in your installed versions. Model connections explicitly and decide how missing values are represented so generated frontend types match reality.

Caching and invalidation trade-offs

REST caching

Resource URLs provide stable cache keys that many HTTP systems understand. Cache configuration must still account for query parameters, authorization headers, preview modes and pagination. Purge or revalidate resources when content changes; otherwise a fast cache can serve stale editorial data.

GraphQL caching

Because many different queries can target the same endpoint, a GraphQL cache needs query-aware keys or persisted operations. Normalize equivalent queries where appropriate, set limits on public operations and define invalidation for objects that appear in many query results. WPGraphQL Smart Cache documents caching, invalidation and persisted queries, but the cache behavior depends on your hosting and edge configuration.

Should you use both?

A mixed architecture can be reasonable when an existing integration already depends on REST while a new frontend benefits from GraphQL. It is an implementation choice, not an official requirement. Running both means duplicating authorization tests, documentation, monitoring and cache-invalidation rules. Define which system is authoritative for each client and avoid silently exposing different versions of the same private data.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose REST if core routes already provide the resources and fields you need.
  • Choose REST if minimizing plugins and operational dependencies is a priority.
  • Choose WPGraphQL if several views repeatedly need connected content from multiple types.
  • Choose WPGraphQL if client-selected fields and typed introspection solve a demonstrated development or payload problem.
  • Choose either only after testing custom fields, authentication, cache invalidation and representative data volume.
  • Consider both only when separate clients have concrete, documented reasons to use different interfaces.

Bottom line

For most new headless WordPress sites, start by checking whether the core REST API meets the content model and integration requirements. It is available immediately, familiar to HTTP-based tooling and often sufficient for resource-oriented pages. Adopt WPGraphQL when connected queries, field selection and a typed schema provide measurable value that outweighs plugin, schema and cache-management work. Whichever you choose, benchmark equivalent requests and enforce authorization at the exact routes, fields and roles your application uses.
