To add a timer to a WordPress quiz, configure the timer inside your quiz plugin or learning-management system. In Quiz and Survey Master (QSM), edit the quiz, open Options, choose Quiz Submission, enter a value in Time Limit (in minutes), and save. A value of 0 turns timing off. For section-by-section exams, QSM’s Advanced Timer add-on adds page timers, warnings, persistence controls, and automatic handling when time expires.

Choose the timer behavior before changing a setting

A timer is not a separate hardware device or WordPress core feature. It is controlled by the quiz plugin or LMS that renders the questions. The right configuration depends on what you want the countdown to do:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Whole-quiz timing: one limit covers every question.
  • Per-page timing: each paginated section receives its own limit.
  • Per-question timing: an individual question has a separate limit, where the plugin supports it.
  • Expiry action: questions can freeze, the user can receive a warning, or the quiz can submit automatically.
  • Start event: the clock may begin on page load, after a Start Quiz button, or when the user first clicks Next.
  • Persistence: a plugin may reset the clock on reload, continue it after a tab is closed, or stop continuation after expiry.

Decide these rules first, then test them with a short practice quiz. A two-minute test exposes start, expiry, reload, and mobile problems much faster than testing a full-length exam.

Set a basic whole-quiz timer in Quiz and Survey Master

QSM provides a quiz-wide countdown in its core settings. Use this path:

Just install the batteries, and press the large top button to activate the light and a unique built-in sound. A user-friendly slide lock switch prevents accidental battery drain during storage or transport, making them always ready for your next game.
  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open the QSM quiz or survey you want to edit.
  2. Open the Options tab.
  3. Open Quiz Submission.
  4. Find Time Limit (in minutes).
  5. Enter the allowed duration, such as 20 for twenty minutes.
  6. Save the quiz and preview it as a test user.

Entering 0 disables the timer. The setting applies to the entire quiz rather than assigning a different duration to each question or page.

When QSM starts the clock

For a quiz with all questions displayed on one page, QSM starts timing when that page loads. Pagination changes the start condition: if the first page contains no question, QSM starts the timer when the user clicks Next for the first time. This distinction matters when an introductory screen, consent page, or instructions page appears before the questions.

What happens at zero

QSM says that questions freeze when the timer reaches zero. A user may therefore see the current page become unavailable without the answers being submitted. If the attempt must be recorded automatically, enable QSM’s optional Force Submit setting. Force Submit sends the quiz when time expires and prevents the user from returning after expiry. Choose one behavior deliberately: freezing is appropriate for a practice activity where an instructor reviews incomplete work, while forced submission is usually better for a closed-book assessment.

Show remaining time in results or email messages

QSM supplies time-related template variables for messages and results. The documented variables include %TIMER%, %TIMER_MINUTES%, and %TIMER_SECONDS%. Insert the variable supported by the message template you are editing, then run a test submission to confirm the rendered value and formatting.

Use QSM Advanced Timer for controls beyond one countdown

QSM’s Advanced Timer add-on requires the QSM core plugin. It adds controls that are not part of the basic whole-quiz field:

  • A visual timer and an optional progress bar.
  • A warning at 90 percent of the allotted time.
  • Controls to stop the timer.
  • Separate overall and per-page timers.
  • Rules for resetting after a reload.
  • Options for continuing after a browser tab is closed.
  • Options controlling whether timing continues after expiry.

Exact labels and availability can change with the installed version. Open the add-on’s timer settings after activation and verify each option in a staging copy before applying it to a live exam.

Configure a visual countdown

Set the duration with the hour, minute, and second fields when the assessment needs more precision than whole minutes. Select countdown behavior when users must see time remaining. Select count-up behavior when you want to record elapsed time without imposing a deadline. Turn on the visual timer and, if useful, the progress bar so users can locate the time indicator without searching the page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a warning before expiry

The add-on can warn users when 90 percent of the allotted time has elapsed. A warning is useful when the timer is easy to miss or when a forced submission would otherwise surprise the user. Do not treat a warning as extra time: the original limit still controls expiry. Check the warning on a phone as well as a desktop because a narrow layout may push it below the questions.

Control reloads and closed tabs

Advanced Timer includes choices for resetting timing on reload and for continuing after a browser tab is closed. Pick a rule that matches your assessment policy. Resetting on reload can unintentionally give a user additional time; continuing across a closed tab is fairer for interrupted sessions but may require stronger session and identity controls. QSM documents that browser-close continuation does not work for single-page quizzes, so do not promise that behavior when every question is on one page.

Give each quiz page its own time limit

Per-page timing is intended for a multi-section exam, such as a reading section followed by mathematics and then a short response section. QSM documents page timers that assign a limit to individual pages, warn users about remaining time, and either disable that page’s questions or move the user onward when the page limit elapses.

  1. Install and activate the QSM core plugin.
  2. Install and activate the Advanced Timer add-on.
  3. In QSM’s quiz options, enable pagination and divide the quiz into the intended sections.
  4. Open the timer settings and enable page timers in addition to, or instead of, the overall timer.
  5. Assign the duration for each page using the available hour, minute, and second controls.
  6. Select the expiry action for a page: disable its questions or advance the user, according to the assessment rules.
  7. Preview every page in order and test a deliberately short limit before publishing.

A page timer is different from a single timer displayed beside paginated questions. The page setting creates separate limits, so a user cannot spend the entire examination allowance on the first section unless your overall policy also permits that.

When per-page timing is appropriate

  • Use it when sections have intentionally different working times.
  • Use an overall timer as well when the exam has a hard end time independent of section limits.
  • Avoid it for a casual survey where moving users forward at zero would create unnecessary friction.
  • Explain the transition rule in the instructions so users know whether unanswered questions are disabled or whether the quiz advances automatically.

Alternative: configure timing in LearnDash

LearnDash places quiz time limits under Display & Content Settings, alongside controls such as question order and other quiz-display options. This is a practical route when quizzes are part of a larger course, lesson, progress, and completion workflow. Open the quiz editor, locate Display & Content Settings, set the available time control, save, and test the student-facing quiz.

LearnDash’s setting names and available controls depend on the installed version and enabled extensions. Confirm whether your version provides the exact expiry action, pagination behavior, and persistence rule you need rather than assuming that a whole-quiz limit also supplies per-page timing.

Another option: Quiz Creator

The WordPress.org listing for Quiz Creator states that it supports both quiz-wide and per-question timers, a Start Quiz button for timed quizzes, and timer-expiry handling. This makes it relevant when timing must begin only after a user explicitly starts rather than when the quiz page first renders.

Treat the interface and compatibility as version-dependent. Before migrating an existing quiz, test whether the timer starts from the Start Quiz button, how unanswered questions are handled at zero, whether pagination is supported, and whether the timer survives a refresh or closed tab.

Design the timer around the assessment, not the other way around

Decide whether submission must be automatic

Automatic submission protects a strict deadline and records the attempt without requiring the user to click Submit at the last second. A freeze-only design gives an instructor more control over incomplete work but can leave an attempt unsubmitted. If you choose Force Submit, tell users in the instructions that the quiz will be submitted when the clock reaches zero.

Make the start event unambiguous

A timer that starts on page load can begin while a user reads instructions, waits for a slow connection, or resolves a login prompt. A Start Quiz button creates a clear beginning when the plugin supports it. In QSM, remember that a blank first pagination page delays the start until the first Next click.

Choose persistence deliberately

Reload and closed-tab rules affect fairness. For a high-stakes exam, document whether refreshing is allowed and whether an interrupted session resumes. For a low-stakes practice quiz, resetting may be acceptable. Do not rely on browser-close continuation for a single-page QSM quiz because that case is not supported.

Account for phones and accessibility

  • Keep the timer visible without requiring horizontal scrolling.
  • Check that warnings are readable at increased text size.
  • Ensure the countdown does not cover a question or Submit button.
  • Use clear text in addition to color so a warning is not conveyed by color alone.
  • Test keyboard focus when a page advances or questions become disabled.
  • Check that the timer remains understandable when a user zooms the browser.

Test before publishing

  1. Create a duplicate or staging copy of the quiz.
  2. Set a very short limit, such as one or two minutes, for testing.
  3. Confirm exactly when the clock starts.
  4. Leave one question unanswered and observe the expiry behavior.
  5. Test Force Submit, if enabled, and verify that a result is recorded.
  6. Reload during an attempt and check whether the clock resets or continues as configured.
  7. Close and reopen the browser tab if continuation is part of your policy.
  8. For paginated quizzes, test every page and each page’s limit.
  9. Repeat the test on a phone over a normal mobile connection.
  10. Submit a complete attempt and verify that any timer template variable displays the intended value in results or email.

Troubleshoot common timer problems

The timer never appears

Confirm that a nonzero duration is saved, that the quiz is using the intended plugin, and that the timer display is enabled when using Advanced Timer. Clear any page-cache layer that may be serving an old quiz form, then retest while logged out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The timer starts too early

Check whether the quiz is configured as one page or whether an introductory page contains no question. In QSM, a one-page quiz starts on page load, while a paginated quiz with no question on its first page starts after the first Next click. If users need a deliberate start button, use a plugin or configuration that supports that event.

Users receive extra time after refreshing

Review the Advanced Timer reload setting and your caching configuration. A reset-on-reload rule may be intentional for practice but is unsuitable for a controlled exam. Test in a private browser window so an existing session does not hide the behavior.

The quiz freezes but no result is submitted

That is QSM’s documented default expiry behavior when Force Submit is not enabled. Turn on Force Submit if the assessment requires automatic recording, then test an expired attempt to verify that the result reaches the administrator and the user cannot return to the quiz.

Per-page timing does not work

Verify that QSM pagination is enabled, the Advanced Timer add-on is active alongside the QSM core plugin, and each page has a duration. Test with one question per page first; this isolates page configuration from a complex exam layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the configuration maintainable

Record the intended duration, start event, expiry action, reload rule, and page limits in the quiz’s internal notes or your site documentation. Plugin interfaces and licensing can change, so verify the current installed version before publishing screenshots, promising a feature, or buying an add-on. Re-test the timer after plugin, WordPress, theme, caching, or membership-system updates, especially when quiz completion affects course progress or certificates.
