WordPress Hosting SLAs and Uptime Guarantees: What to Look For

A WordPress hosting uptime percentage is meaningful only when you read the contract behind it. A 99.9% SLA can allow about 43.2 minutes of covered downtime in a 30-day month, while 99.99% allows about 4.32 minutes—but exclusions, measurement rules, architecture and credit limits may matter more than the headline number. Compare those terms before paying for a higher tier.

What a WordPress hosting SLA actually promises

A service-level agreement (SLA) is a contract defining the availability a hosting provider owes you and the remedy if it misses that commitment. It is not a promise that every visitor will always load every page. A WordPress page can fail because of the host, a domain or DNS problem, a content-delivery network, a plugin, an overloaded database, an external API or an error in your own configuration. Many SLAs cover only one layer of that chain.

Read the definition of service first. It might mean a web-server cluster, a virtual machine, a Kubernetes service, a database, the provider’s network, a control panel, backups or the complete stack required to serve a page. If the SLA covers only the host’s network, a database outage may not count even though your site is unavailable.

Availability is a calculation, not a feeling

Most agreements calculate availability for a stated measurement period:

Availability = (total minutes in the period − covered downtime) ÷ total minutes in the period

The denominator may be a calendar month, a billing month or another interval. A provider can therefore report compliance even when your own monitoring shows an outage, if the event falls outside the contract’s scope or exclusion list.

How much downtime each percentage allows

The following figures are mathematical allowances before exclusions. They assume every minute in the period is covered and use a 30-day month unless noted.

Availability target Unavailability allowed Approximate downtime in 30 days Approximate downtime in 365 days
99.9% 0.1% 43.2 minutes 8 hours 45.6 minutes
99.95% 0.05% 21.6 minutes 4 hours 22.8 minutes
99.99% 0.01% 4.32 minutes 52.56 minutes

A month-based SLA can reset at the start of each period. A 99.9% commitment therefore permits roughly 43 minutes in one 30-day month even if the provider had no outage in the prior month. Conversely, a 99.99% annual interpretation would still permit more than 52 minutes over a year. Scheduled maintenance and other exclusions can reduce the minutes that count against the provider.

The contract terms that determine whether an SLA helps

1. Define the covered service

Ask whether the agreement covers the specific failure modes your site faces. Confirm treatment of the origin server, database, storage, network, load balancer, CDN, DNS, control panel, backups and managed WordPress components. A guarantee for a hosting platform does not automatically cover a third-party DNS provider or an application you installed.

2. Find the measurement method and authority

Determine whether availability is measured per site, per application, per account or across the provider’s platform. Check the monitoring locations, probe frequency and whether brief failures are aggregated. Many contracts state that the provider’s monitoring is authoritative. If so, keep independent records anyway; they give you evidence to challenge a disputed calculation but may not override the contract’s measurement rule.

3. Identify the measurement window

Look for the exact start and end of the period. Some providers use a calendar month; others use each customer’s billing dates. Kinsta, for example, defines its monthly billing period around the customer’s billing dates. A billing-period definition affects both the downtime allowance and the deadline for submitting a claim.

4. Read every exclusion

Typical exclusions include:

  • Scheduled maintenance announced in advance.
  • Emergency maintenance or security response.
  • Your code, plugin, theme, configuration or resource consumption.
  • Traffic abuse, denial-of-service events or intentional rate limiting.
  • Failures of third-party services such as DNS, payment gateways or external APIs.
  • Force majeure events outside the provider’s reasonable control.
  • Account suspension for policy, billing or acceptable-use violations.

Check whether the provider excludes an entire maintenance window or only the minutes when the service is intentionally unavailable. Also check notice requirements: an “emergency” exclusion with no definition can be broader than a narrowly timed maintenance exception.

5. Understand the remedy, cap and expiry

An SLA remedy is commonly a service credit applied to a future invoice, not a cash payment. The credit table may use bands, such as one percentage for a short breach and a larger percentage for a longer one. Confirm whether the credit applies to the affected service or your whole account, whether there is a monthly or annual cap, and when unused credits expire. A generous percentage is less valuable if the cap is low or you are permitted to claim only once.

6. Check the claim deadline and procedure

Most contracts do not issue credits automatically. They require a written request identifying the affected service, the dates and times, and supporting evidence. WP Engine and Kinsta require requests within 30 days; missing that deadline forfeits the credit under their stated terms. Save the exact instructions, support address or portal path and required time zone before an incident occurs.

Provider examples and what their wording means

These examples illustrate why percentages cannot be compared without the associated terms. Eligibility, geography, plan and contract language can change, so read the agreement attached to your order.

Provider or product Published target Remedy or threshold stated Important qualification
WP Engine standard SLA 99.95% availability 5% of applicable monthly fees for each full hour of excess downtime; support request within 30 days Availability excludes “Excused Downtime”
WP Engine Enhanced SLA 99.99% target 3% credit for each excess half hour Enhanced terms and eligibility apply; verify the current contract
Kinsta default SLA 99.9%, unless the order form specifies a higher percentage Credit calculation begins after more than 43 minutes at 99.9% Written request required within 30 days; downtime tables apply
Kinsta higher/custom target Up to 99.99% on custom plans At 99.99%, the stated threshold is more than 4 minutes before credits begin Standard hosting is not described as high-availability architecture
Cloudways Autonomous 99.9% uptime SLA Product page advertises the target; contract supplies the operative remedy Kubernetes-based WordPress autoscaling service; inspect exclusions and claim rules

WP Engine’s wording is explicit: “WP Engine will make the Services available 99.95% of the time, excluding any Excused Downtime.” Its standard remedy is tied to each full hour beyond the allowed downtime, while the Enhanced SLA uses a different half-hour credit schedule. Those are contractual credits, not compensation for lost sales or reputation.

Kinsta’s documentation distinguishes an SLA from high availability: “At Kinsta, whilst we do not offer high availability (HA) hosting, we do offer a Service Level Agreement (SLA) backed uptime guarantee.” Its standard arrangement uses a single Linux container per site rather than multiple load-balanced instances. A higher percentage therefore does not by itself prove that a site has automatic failover.

SLA percentage versus high-availability design

An SLA measures an outcome and specifies a remedy; architecture determines how a provider attempts to deliver that outcome. High-availability designs commonly use redundant instances, health checks, replicated storage and automated failover. A single instance can still meet a contractual percentage during a measurement period, but a hardware or host failure may require recovery before the site returns.

  • Are WordPress application instances redundant or single-instance?
  • Is the database replicated across failure domains?
  • Can traffic fail over automatically when an instance is unhealthy?
  • Are backups stored separately, and how quickly can they be restored?
  • Which geographic regions and cloud zones are involved?
  • Does the SLA cover failover time, backup restoration or only the primary endpoint?

Paying for 99.99% can be sensible for a transaction-heavy site when the plan includes genuinely redundant components and a remedy that covers the service you need. It is less compelling when the extra percentage is only a target layered onto a single-instance design, when maintenance is excluded, or when the credit cap is trivial compared with the cost of an outage.

How to evaluate an SLA before signing up

  1. Write down your failure boundary. List the components whose failure makes a page unusable: origin, database, DNS, CDN, payment service and administration interface.
  2. Convert the target to minutes. Use the table above for a 30-day month, then recalculate for the contract’s actual period.
  3. Mark exclusions beside each component. Note maintenance, customer-caused events, third-party dependencies, abuse clauses and force majeure.
  4. Locate the credit schedule. Record the trigger, percentage, cap, eligible fees and expiry.
  5. Record the evidence rule. Identify the authoritative monitor, required timestamps, time zone, log format and claim channel.
  6. Verify plan eligibility. Confirm that the SLA applies to your WordPress plan, region, contract term and billing arrangement—not merely to the provider’s platform generally.
  7. Compare support escalation. Check whether urgent incidents reach an on-call engineer, how escalation works and whether support is included in the SLA.
  8. Price the risk. Compare the recurring premium with the business cost of the downtime that remains outside the SLA.

Set up independent monitoring and preserve evidence

Use an external HTTP monitor from more than one network or region. Monitor the homepage and at least one uncached, representative WordPress path if your service depends on dynamic requests. Record status code, response time, DNS resolution and the first and last failed probe. Keep screenshots or exported logs with UTC timestamps, because a provider may use a different time zone.

When an incident occurs:

  1. Confirm the failure from an independent network and test whether DNS, CDN and origin behave differently.
  2. Capture timestamps, response codes, traceroute or DNS results where relevant, and the provider’s incident number.
  3. Check the status page and maintenance notices, but do not assume a posted event automatically determines SLA treatment.
  4. After service returns, calculate only the minutes that fall inside the contract’s covered scope.
  5. Submit the written claim before the stated deadline, identifying the service, period, measured downtime and requested remedy.
  6. Retain the provider’s calculation and credit confirmation with your monitoring record.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Treating “up to” as a guaranteed level

Marketing language such as “up to 99.99%” may describe an optional or custom configuration. Find the percentage in your order form and SLA, not only on a product page.

Counting excluded minutes as a breach

Your monitor may show a long outage during scheduled or emergency maintenance. The event can still be operationally serious while being excluded from the credit calculation. Separate incident management from SLA eligibility.

Assuming a credit covers business losses

Credits usually reduce a future hosting invoice. They rarely reimburse advertising, lost orders, staff time or reputational damage. Consider independent redundancy or a disaster-recovery plan for those risks.

Waiting until renewal to claim

Thirty-day claim windows are easy to miss. Assign ownership for monitoring and claims, and create an internal reminder as soon as an outage is detected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing uptime with performance

A server can return a successful response while pages are slow, database queries time out intermittently or checkout fails. Check whether the SLA measures reachability only or includes latency and application-level success.

Choosing the right target for your WordPress site

Informational or low-transaction sites

A clearly defined 99.9% SLA may be adequate when occasional short outages have limited financial impact. Prioritize backups, competent support, transparent exclusions and a recovery process over a small percentage difference.

Revenue-producing sites

For stores, memberships and lead-generation sites, calculate the cost of a failed checkout or form submission. A 99.95% or 99.99% target is useful only if the covered service includes the database and application path that customers use, and if the architecture reduces single points of failure.

Sites with strict availability obligations

Ask for custom terms, multi-zone redundancy, tested failover and clearly defined maintenance. If the provider cannot commit those details in writing, treat the percentage as a limited credit program rather than a complete continuity solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: compare contracts, not decimals

The best WordPress hosting SLA is the one that covers the failure your visitors actually experience, measures it over a useful period, excludes as little as possible, provides a meaningful remedy and gives you a practical way to prove a breach. Start with scope and exclusions, verify architecture and monitoring, then use the 99.9%, 99.95% and 99.99% figures to estimate the remaining risk. A higher number is worth paying for only when those underlying terms improve with it.
