It remains an optional WordPress admin plugin, but its redesigned workspace lets you keep multiple admin screens open as windows in one browser tab—for example, an editor beside the Media Library. Existing Desktop Mode users do not need to switch manually; WordPress.com says the plugin will continue updating and their saved windows and settings will remain.
What happened to WordPress Desktop Mode?
OpenStation is the reworked and renamed plugin first introduced as Desktop Mode in June 2026. WordPress.com announced the new name and workspace on October 1, 2026. The change concerns the administrator’s working environment; it is not a redesign of the public-facing site.
The plugin is built and maintained by Automattic. The WordPress.org listing describes it as free, GPL-licensed software that each user can opt into. If a user turns it off, that user returns to classic WordPress admin; deactivating the plugin restores the classic admin interface.
What can you do with OpenStation?
Instead of navigating away from one admin screen to another, OpenStation presents screens as windows within a workspace. WordPress.com’s announcement demonstrates several uses:

- Edit beside your media: Keep a post editor and the Media Library open together, then drag an image into the post.
- Check a preview while editing: Open a post or page preview next to its editor and see the preview update after saving the draft.
- Keep a workspace between visits: Open windows and layouts can be retained between sessions.
- Separate different kinds of work: Use distinct workspaces for writing, moderating comments, or sorting photos.

WordPress.com reports that returning to a previously visited screen in classic WP Admin took 2.4 to 3.7 seconds in its comparison, while OpenStation had nothing to load. That is the company’s own comparison, not an independently validated benchmark; its announcement does not state a sample size or test protocol.
Does OpenStation change what site visitors see?
No. OpenStation is an optional workspace for WordPress administrators. It changes how a participating user works in the admin area, not the site’s visitor-facing pages. Users who do not opt in can continue using classic admin.

Where is OpenStation available, and what does it require?
WordPress.com says users can install the plugin on any paid plan. For WordPress installations, the WordPress.org listing captured on October 3, 2026 states a minimum of WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.4, and says it was tested up to WordPress 7.1.2. Plugin compatibility metadata can change, so check the live listing before installing.
The same listing showed 1,000+ active installations on October 3, 2026. That is a point-in-time directory figure, not a durable measure of adoption.

Can you use OpenStation on a phone?
The October 1 announcement says a phone experience is in development. It also describes installing OpenStation through the dock’s web-app option, but explicitly labels the phone layout experimental. Treat it as an early, changeable experience rather than a fully established mobile interface.
Does it work with WordPress multisite?
A WordPress.org support reply says multisite support began in version 1.1.6. It describes a desktop for each site and for Network Admin, while still calling multisite support experimental. That is a qualified, version-specific statement—not evidence of mature or universal compatibility across multisite setups.

What should administrators know about AI and external requests?
The desktop interface itself does not require an external service. Optional AI features do: the plugin listing says requests go to the AI provider configured in WordPress Connectors. It also notes that limited, user-initiated features may make external requests for shortcut favicons and plugin information. Administrators should account for those exceptions when reviewing a site’s data flows and policies.
Should you switch to OpenStation?
OpenStation is most relevant if you regularly move between admin screens and want them visible together, especially when editing posts alongside media or previews. Its per-user opt-in means it can be tried as an individual workflow choice rather than imposed on every site user. If you rely on phone use or multisite, weigh the explicitly experimental status of those experiences before making them central to your workflow.
