WordPress.com vs. Self-Hosted WordPress: Which Is Right for Your Site?

Choose WordPress.com if you want hosting, routine maintenance, and a support path bundled into one service. Choose self-hosted WordPress if you need to select your own hosting environment, run custom code, or accept responsibility for setup, updates, security, and backups. Neither route is universally better. The right choice depends on the control you need, the work you are willing to do, the features your plan or host actually includes, and the full recurring cost.

Both options run the same WordPress software; the defining difference is who provides and manages the hosting. WordPress.com describes itself as managed hosting, while self-hosted WordPress means installing the software with a separate hosting provider. The distinction and feature details below reflect official documentation reviewed in August–October 2026.

The core difference: managed hosting versus hosting you operate

WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress are not two different content-management systems. Both use the WordPress software. As the official comparison explains, “WordPress.com and WordPress.org both run on the same WordPress software—the main difference is hosting.” Read the full comparison at WordPress.com’s WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org guide.

With WordPress.com, the service supplies the hosting layer and handles many operational tasks. You select a plan, create or connect a domain, and work within the features that plan provides. With self-hosting, you choose a third-party host, pay it separately, install WordPress there, and decide how updates, security, backups, staging, and recovery will be handled. The host may offer managed services, but there is no single package or support promise that applies to every provider.

WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress compared

Decision area WordPress.com Self-hosted WordPress What it means for you
Hosting Hosting is included in the WordPress.com service, which describes its offering as managed hosting. You choose and pay a third-party host, then install WordPress there. WordPress.com reduces the number of vendors and accounts you manage; self-hosting gives you a choice of environments.
Technical upkeep The provider handles many hosting tasks, including updates, security, and backups as described in its comparison material. Confirm the exact backup feature on your plan. You have more setup and maintenance responsibility. Update, security, monitoring, and backup services vary by host. Consider how much time you want to spend on administration and troubleshooting.
Control Advanced access is governed by the plan. Current documentation lists SFTP/SSH and database management on higher tiers. You select the hosting environment and generally have more freedom to change PHP settings, server configuration, and custom code, subject to the host’s rules. Technical control can be valuable for developers, agencies, and unusual workloads, but it also creates more ways to misconfigure a site.
Plugins and themes Plugin installation is available on paid plans; feature breadth depends on the plan. WordPress.com describes an ecosystem of more than 10,000 themes and access to over 50,000 plugins in the WordPress.org repository. You install themes and plugins through your chosen host’s WordPress installation, subject to that host’s technical environment and the software’s compatibility. Check a specific plugin’s requirements before committing to a plan or host.
Support Free support resources are listed for all plans. Paid plans include 24/7 Happiness Engineer support according to the comparison guide. Support comes from the WordPress.org community and your particular host. Response times, scope, and expertise differ by provider. If you need one accountable support channel, a managed service is simpler; self-hosting may require diagnosing which vendor is responsible.
Backups Automated backups are listed for Business and Commerce. Free, Personal, and Premium users can export WordPress XML content and their media library, which is not the same as a full automated backup. Backup and restoration tools depend on the host and any backup service or plugin you select. Verify how often backups run, how long they are retained, what they include, and how restoration works.
Costs Plans can be free or paid. The price depends on the plan, currency, and monthly or yearly billing; renewal terms must be checked at purchase. Hosting is a separate recurring charge. A domain, premium themes or plugins, backups, and support can add costs. Compare the complete cost for the features you actually need, not just the advertised entry price.
Portability WordPress.com says you own your content and can move it. Its export tools provide a route for taking content and media elsewhere. You control the installation and host, but you must plan and execute your own backups and migrations. Keep an export or restorable backup before major changes or a host move.

What WordPress.com plans include—and where plan gates matter

WordPress.com offers free and paid plans, and its feature matrix changes over time. The official guide reviewed September 4, 2026 lists hosting and automatic updates among the included basics. It says plugin installation is available on the Personal, Premium, Business, and Commerce paid plans. Plan names and features can change, so verify the live matrix before buying at Choose a WordPress.com plan.

Plugins and themes

If your site depends on a particular plugin, check plan eligibility before you build around it. WordPress.com’s plugin documentation, reviewed August 11, 2026, states that paid plans allow plugin installation and describes more than 50,000 plugins in the WordPress.org repository. That figure is a vendor-published count, not an independent market measurement; a repository listing also does not guarantee that every plugin is compatible with every site configuration. The relevant guide is WordPress Plugins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WordPress.com’s comparison documentation describes more than 10,000 themes in the ecosystem. Treat that as the provider’s current description rather than a formal census. On self-hosted WordPress, your practical choices depend on the host’s PHP version, resource limits, security policies, and the compatibility of the theme or plugin you select.

Advanced development access

The plan guide identifies Business and Commerce features such as real-time backups, custom code, SFTP/SSH, database management, and staging. Those capabilities can matter when a developer needs to test changes, edit files, inspect a database, or deploy custom functionality. Do not assume that a lower-cost plan includes them; confirm each feature in the current plan table.

Support expectations

All WordPress.com plans have free support resources. Paid plans are described as including 24/7 Happiness Engineer support. That is a service-level distinction, not a promise that every customization is covered. Self-hosted WordPress has no equivalent universal support tier: you may use community forums for WordPress questions and your host for infrastructure issues, while a theme or plugin developer may be responsible for its own product.

What self-hosting requires from the site owner

“Self-hosted” does not mean you must own a physical server. It means the WordPress installation runs on a hosting account you choose and pay for separately. The host may provide a one-click installer, managed updates, security tools, or backups, but those are provider-specific services. Read the host’s limits and restore procedures instead of assuming that “WordPress hosting” includes everything.

A practical setup sequence

  1. Define the required features. List the plugins, themes, custom code, database access, staging workflow, traffic expectations, and storage needs your site has. Use this list to screen hosts rather than starting with a headline price.
  2. Choose a host and domain arrangement. A domain and hosting are separate services. WordPress.com’s domain guidance explains that a site needs both; a domain can be registered, connected, or transferred. Some annual or multi-year WordPress.com plans include the first domain year, but renewal pricing and terms require checking at Domain name vs. website hosting. With self-hosting, decide whether the domain registrar and host will be the same company.
  3. Install WordPress. Use the host’s documented installer or manual installation process. Record the administrative account, database details, and recovery contacts in a secure password manager.
  4. Set the environment before publishing. Confirm the PHP and database versions supported by your chosen themes and plugins, configure the domain, and review the host’s security and update controls. If you need custom code or server-level settings, verify that access is available on your plan rather than assuming it.
  5. Establish backups before adding content. Determine what is included, where copies are stored, how long they are retained, and how you would restore both the database and uploaded files. Test the restoration process on a non-production copy when the host supports it.
  6. Maintain the installation. Apply WordPress, theme, and plugin updates, remove abandoned extensions, monitor storage and error logs, and keep a documented rollback plan. The exact tools and division of responsibility depend on the host.

This workload is manageable for a technical owner or agency, but it is part of the cost of self-hosting even when the WordPress software itself is free.

Costs: compare the whole site, not “free” versus “paid”

The WordPress software is free, but a complete self-hosted site normally requires paid hosting. You may also pay for a domain, premium themes or plugins, backup storage, security services, development, and support. WordPress.com has a free tier and paid plans, but the amount you pay depends on the selected plan, currency, billing interval, and renewal terms. Its documentation cautions that provider comparisons depend on the features included, not only the headline price.

Cost component WordPress.com Self-hosted WordPress Question to ask
Hosting Bundled into the selected WordPress.com plan. A separate recurring hosting subscription. What resources, support, updates, and backup functions are included?
Domain Can be registered, connected, or transferred. Some annual or multi-year plans include the first year; renewal terms vary. Usually purchased from a registrar, sometimes bundled with a host. What is the renewal price, and who controls the registration?
Plugins and themes Plugin installation is available on paid plans; premium products may have their own charges. Free and paid products are available, subject to host compatibility and licensing. Does the required product run on this plan, and is its license recurring?
Backups Automated backups are listed for Business and Commerce; lower tiers can export content and media. Included features vary; a separate service may be needed. Can you restore the whole site, and how quickly?
Support and labor Paid plans include 24/7 Happiness Engineer support according to the comparison guide. May involve host support, community help, or paid developer time. Who will troubleshoot a plugin conflict or a failed update?

Because currencies, plan contents, promotions, and renewals change, use the current plan or host checkout pages when you calculate a budget. No verified comparison establishes that one route is always cheaper.

Control, customization, and operational risk

When more control helps

Self-hosting is usually the better fit when you need to choose a specific server environment, alter PHP settings, run custom code, manage a database directly, or build a staging and deployment process around your own tools. It can also suit agencies that already have maintenance procedures and want the same environment across multiple client sites.

When managed boundaries are an advantage

WordPress.com is often a better fit when you prefer a consolidated service and do not want to assemble separate hosting, maintenance, backup, and support arrangements. The boundary can prevent server-level mistakes and reduce routine administration. The trade-off is that access to advanced features depends on the plan, and some changes that are straightforward on a self-managed server may require a higher tier or a different approach.

The risk trade-off

More control creates more responsibility. A self-hosted owner can select a compatible version, roll back a change, or move to another host, but must also make sure those options are actually implemented. A managed service removes many infrastructure decisions, but you must work within its supported plans and migration tools.

Backups, exports, and recovery

Do not use “export” and “backup” as synonyms. WordPress.com’s backup guide, reviewed October 5, 2026, says automated backups are available on Business and Commerce. It also says Free, Personal, and Premium users can export content as WordPress XML and export their media library. Those exports help move content, but they are not presented as an identical substitute for a full automated backup that can restore the entire site state. Review the details at Back up your WordPress.com site.

For a self-hosted site, ask the host or backup provider whether a copy includes the database, uploaded files, configuration, and any custom code. Clarify retention, off-site storage, encryption, restore testing, and whether you can download a copy independently of the host. A backup that cannot be restored is not a useful recovery plan.

Which option is right for common site situations?

Choose WordPress.com when convenience is the priority

  • You want hosting, updates, and a support route in one service.
  • You prefer not to maintain a server or assemble separate backup and security tools.
  • Your required features fit the selected plan, including any plugin needs.
  • You value a simpler path to launching a site and are comfortable with plan-based access.

Choose self-hosting when control or technical flexibility is essential

  • You need to select the hosting environment or change server and PHP settings.
  • You require custom code, direct SFTP/SSH or database workflows, or a specialized deployment process.
  • You already have the skills, staff, or budget to handle updates, monitoring, backups, and recovery.
  • You want to negotiate hosting independently and maintain your own migration plan.

If you are undecided, use this order of questions

  1. What must the site run? Identify required plugins, themes, integrations, and custom code first. A plan that cannot install or support a requirement is disqualified regardless of price.
  2. Who will maintain it? Decide whether that is you, an employee, an agency, or a managed provider. Put a value on the hours and response time involved.
  3. What support do you expect? WordPress.com’s paid support route is defined in its documentation; self-hosted support depends on the providers you select.
  4. What recovery point is acceptable? Compare automated backups, exports, retention, and restoration—not just the word “backup.”
  5. What is the complete recurring cost? Include hosting or plan renewals, the domain, premium extensions, backup storage, and professional help.
  6. How might you move later? Check export formats, ownership of the domain, access to files and databases, and the work required to rebuild the site elsewhere.

Moving between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress

Plan portability before launch rather than after a crisis. WordPress.com says users own their content and can move it. Its export guidance provides WordPress XML content and media-library exports on the lower tiers, while higher plans may provide broader backup capabilities. Before a move, inventory themes, plugins, custom code, forms, redirects, user accounts, and media; an XML export alone does not recreate every hosting or configuration detail.

For a move to self-hosting, arrange the destination host, install WordPress, import the content and media using the supported tools, then recreate theme settings and extensions and test URLs before changing the domain. For a move away from self-hosting, obtain a restorable copy of the database and files, confirm what the destination accepts, and keep the original site available until testing is complete. Your domain can be registered, connected, or transferred, but the registration change and the content migration are separate tasks.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming “free WordPress” means a free website

The software costs nothing, but self-hosting still requires hosting and often a domain and other services. WordPress.com’s free and paid plans also differ in features. Build a complete cost list before choosing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying on the entry price alone

A low introductory price may not include the plugin access, backups, support, or renewal terms you need. Compare the exact plan or host package and record recurring prices.

Discovering a plugin restriction after building the site

Check whether plugin installation is available on your WordPress.com plan and whether the plugin supports the target environment. The current documentation lists plugin installation on Personal, Premium, Business, and Commerce paid plans, but plan features can change.

Treating a content export as a complete disaster-recovery copy

XML and media exports help with portability. They are not automatically a full site image containing every setting, database table, file, and custom change. Verify restoration separately.

Assuming every self-hosting provider is equivalent

Hosts differ in update automation, security controls, resource limits, backups, staging, support, and cancellation or migration procedures. Read those terms before installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving migration until the site is business-critical

Keep current exports, document the domain account, and test a recovery path while the site is small. Portability is easier when it is part of routine maintenance.

Bottom line: match responsibility to your real needs

WordPress.com is the practical default for a site owner who values a consolidated, managed service and whose required features fit the chosen plan. Self-hosted WordPress is the stronger fit when environment control, custom code, or independent hosting decisions outweigh the time and operational responsibility of maintaining the installation. Make the decision by checking feature requirements, maintenance ownership, support, recovery, renewals, and portability in that order—not by calling one option “free” and the other “paid.”
