Short answer: A free .wordpress.com address is enough to start a new or experimental site without a separate domain-registration bill. A custom domain gives the site its own address and can become the primary address on a paid WordPress.com plan. Qualifying annual, two-year, and three-year plans may cover the first year of a new registration or an incoming domain transfer, but the domain renews at a recurring rate afterward.
Your main control decision is whether to connect a domain and keep its registration with the current registrar, or transfer the registration to WordPress.com and manage it there. Those choices affect billing, ownership, and timing, but neither one moves your pages, posts, media, or other site content.

What you get with a WordPress.com address
Every WordPress.com site can use a platform-provided address ending in .wordpress.com. It is a genuine working web address, not a temporary preview link, and it does not require a separate custom-domain registration payment.

On a site without a paid plan, that free address remains the primary domain. You can still build and publish a site there, but visitors will see the WordPress.com address rather than a name you register yourself. A paid plan is required to use a custom domain as the site’s primary address.

The free address is therefore a practical choice when you are testing an idea, learning the platform, or keeping initial costs to a minimum. It also lets you establish the site before deciding whether a custom name is worth paying for. The tradeoff is address ownership and branding: the address is tied to the WordPress.com-hosted site rather than to a domain registration that you control independently.
What a custom domain changes
A custom domain is the address you choose and register, such as a name using .com, .net, or .org. With a paid WordPress.com plan, that domain can be set as the site’s primary address, so visitors use it instead of the free .wordpress.com address.
The domain registration and the WordPress.com hosting plan are separate things. Paying for a plan does not make the domain permanently free, and owning a domain does not by itself pay for the hosting plan. Treat the two as separate line items when you budget and as separate ownership interests when you plan a handoff or cancellation.
You have two ways to use a domain you want for the site:
- Register or transfer it to WordPress.com: WordPress.com becomes the registrar and the place where the registration is managed.
- Connect it from another registrar: the domain stays registered with its current provider while it displays the WordPress.com site.
WordPress.com summarizes the distinction this way: “Connect to keep your current registrar; transfer to consolidate everything in one place.” The choice is about registration control and administration; both routes can put the custom address in front of the same hosted site.
How much does each option cost?
Free address
A .wordpress.com address has no separate custom-domain registration charge. You may still choose a paid WordPress.com plan for other features, but the free address itself does not create a domain-renewal bill.

The WordPress.com U.S.-dollar pricing page reviewed on August 27, 2026 listed these standard one-year rates:

These figures are a dated U.S.-dollar snapshot, not a universal quote. The amount depends on the extension, currency, and the account’s billing terms. WordPress.com says the listed standard rate for a standard-priced top-level domain applies to new registrations and renewals, while an existing domain’s renewal can differ according to the price in effect when that domain was originally registered or transferred. Check the exact extension and renewal amount shown in your own account before committing.
The first-year credit
A new annual, two-year, or three-year WordPress.com plan may include one free year for a new domain registration. The credit can also be applied to transfer an existing domain to WordPress.com and add a year to that domain’s registration period.
The credit is limited to new plans paid on an annual schedule. Monthly plans do not include it, and the credit cannot be used to renew a domain that is already registered at WordPress.com. After the covered year, the domain renews at the standard price that applies to that domain.
That makes “free domain” a first-year promotion attached to qualifying plan purchases, not a lifetime waiver of registration fees. For a realistic budget, add the recurring domain renewal to the recurring plan price from the beginning. Plan pricing is separate and can change, so use the current plan page and your checkout total for that part of the calculation.

Connect the domain
Connecting leaves the domain registered with the provider you already use. WordPress.com says a domain from another provider can be connected for free with any paid plan. The domain then points to the WordPress.com site, while renewal, registrar account access, and registration billing remain outside WordPress.com.

Depending on the domain’s existing nameserver setup, you may need to make DNS changes at the current provider. The important boundary is that the registration does not move: if you later stop using WordPress.com, the domain relationship with that registrar remains intact.
Connecting is usually the better fit when you already own a domain, want to preserve an established registrar account, or prefer to keep hosting and registration managed by different companies.
Transfer the registration
A transfer moves the domain registration to WordPress.com. Registration management and the WordPress.com plan can then be handled in one account, which simplifies administration for people who want one billing location.

If you need the domain working on the site sooner, WordPress.com recommends connecting it first and transferring later.
Transferring the domain does not transfer the website itself. Pages, posts, media, and other content remain a separate matter; moving registration is not a content migration.

Which option should you choose?
Choose the free address when the site is still an experiment
Start with the free address if you are validating an idea, building a private project, or are not ready to commit to a recurring domain bill. You can make the decision later, after you know the site’s name and audience. The limitation is that the free address remains primary until you have a paid plan and a custom domain.

Choose a custom domain when the address itself matters
Use a custom domain when you need a distinct public identity, want an address independent of the platform’s naming scheme, or expect the site to remain active for years. A custom address does not eliminate hosting costs, but it gives you a registration asset that can be renewed, connected elsewhere, or transferred independently of the WordPress.com plan.

Connecting is the conservative choice if the domain already has a registration history, if another person or organization manages it, or if you deliberately keep registration and hosting separate. Renewal reminders and registrar billing stay where they are, so document who has access before changing the site connection.
Transfer when one-account administration is worth the move
Transfer when you want WordPress.com to handle the domain’s registration, renewal, and plan relationship in one place. Allow for the usual 5–7-day transfer window, and connect first if the address must point to the site during that interval.

Start with the free WordPress.com address
- Create the WordPress.com site and keep the supplied
.wordpress.comaddress as the primary domain. - Build and publish while you decide whether the project needs a custom address.
- When you are ready, choose a paid plan and add or connect the custom domain; the free address can remain available as part of the site’s address history.
The exact screens can change, but the decision is always the same: the free address remains primary until a paid plan is used to make the custom domain primary.
Register a new domain through WordPress.com
- Select a paid annual, two-year, or three-year plan if you want to use the qualifying first-year domain credit.
- Choose the available custom domain and confirm the extension, currency, and registration term shown at checkout.
- Record the renewal date and recurring domain price separately from the plan renewal.
- After the included year, review the account’s renewal amount rather than assuming the introductory credit continues.
Connect a domain you already own
- Keep the domain registration active at the current registrar.
- On a paid WordPress.com plan, use the domain-management option to connect the external domain.
- Apply the DNS changes WordPress.com requests at the existing registrar; the required change depends on that domain’s current nameserver arrangement.
- Confirm that the custom domain is selected as the site’s primary address when the connection is complete.
Transfer the registration to WordPress.com
- Start the transfer from the WordPress.com domain-management area and review eligibility and pricing for the specific domain.
- Apply an available annual-plan credit if one is offered; otherwise expect the standard renewal charge.
- Keep the domain connected to the site during the transfer if visitors need uninterrupted access.
- Allow about 5–7 days for a typical incoming transfer, then verify that WordPress.com is the registrar and that the renewal date is recorded.
These steps move or point the domain only. They do not copy the site’s content from one hosting service to another.
Ownership, billing, and cancellation
WordPress.com distinguishes among the site owner, plan owner, and domain owner. Those roles can belong to different accounts, which is important when a team member, client, or contractor sets up the site.
- Domain owner: controls domain renewal, cancellation, and transfer.
- Plan owner: controls plan billing, renewal, and cancellation.
- Site owner: controls the site’s ownership relationship, which is separate from the domain and plan billing roles.
Before changing an account or handing a site to someone else, identify who can access each of these controls. A person who can edit site content may not be able to renew the domain, and the person paying for the plan may not be the person who can transfer the registration.
Canceling a qualifying WordPress.com plan does not automatically mean the customer loses a domain that has already been registered. WordPress.com says the domain can be kept for the remainder of its registration period, subject to the applicable refund rules. The domain’s renewal and ownership still need to be handled by the domain owner, even if the hosting plan ends.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing the first-year credit with permanent free registration
Write down the date on which the included year ends and the renewal price shown for the extension. The credit is tied to a qualifying new annual, two-year, or three-year plan; it is not a recurring renewal benefit.

A custom domain is an addition to the hosting plan, not a replacement for it. Compare the total recurring cost: plan renewal plus domain renewal, with the correct currency and extension.
Transferring when you need the address immediately
A transfer can take 5–7 days. Connect the domain first if the priority is getting the address pointed at the site quickly, then transfer the registration after the site is working.
Assuming a domain transfer moves the website
It does not. Registration control and site-content migration are separate operations. A transfer changes who manages the domain; it does not move pages, posts, media, or other content.
Letting the wrong account own the domain
Check the domain-owner account before setup. Only that owner can renew, cancel, or transfer the domain, while a different plan-owner account may control the hosting subscription.
Expecting every renewal to match the current price list
The listed 2026 U.S.-dollar rates are a reference point. Existing domains may renew at a rate based on the original registration or transfer price, and extensions and currencies can change the amount. Use the account-specific renewal figure for the decision.
A decision checklist
- Do you accept a

The free address minimizes commitment but leaves the site’s primary address tied to WordPress.com. A custom domain costs more over time, yet it gives the site an address that can be managed independently of the hosting plan. Registering at WordPress.com favors consolidated billing; connecting from another registrar favors continuity and external control. Neither route is universally better: choose based on whether your priority is lowest initial cost, a lasting public identity, or control over where the domain is registered.
