A typo in a WordPress link or permalink does not drag down your whole site in Google. Google Search Central has said so plainly: “If some URLs on your site 404, this fact alone does not hurt you or count against you in Google’s search results” (Do 404 errors hurt my site?, 2011). The real cost is smaller and more local: a visitor who wanted a specific page and hit a dead end. Whether you need to act depends on one question, which is whether the broken URL points at something people actually want.
Where the cost of a typo actually falls
There are two different situations that both show up as “404 error,” and they deserve opposite treatment.

- A broken path to a page people want. A mistyped internal link, a misspelled slug shared in an email, or a stale external link to a page that still exists under another address. Visitors are stranded, and a relevant redirect or a corrected link recovers them.
- A URL that should not exist. A random string a bot tried, or a page you deliberately deleted. Here a truthful 404 or 410 is the correct answer, and nothing needs fixing.
No authoritative published figure puts a dollar value on a single WordPress typo, so any “lost sales per typo” number you see is invented. Your own analytics are the only honest source: look at how many visits the broken URL receives and what those visitors would have been worth.

Decision guide: what to do with each kind of bad URL

To choose between rows, ask three things: is there a genuinely relevant replacement, is the error in your own content or from outside, and does the URL get meaningful or repeated visits?

Fix the source first
Google’s Search Console help on 404 errors advises checking where a URL was discovered. If your own page links to the wrong address, or you submitted it in a sitemap, repair that link rather than layering a redirect over it. In WordPress this usually means editing the post or menu item containing the link, or fixing the slug reference. Search Console’s page-indexing reports and a crawl of your own site help locate the referring page.
Redirect only to a relevant destination
A 301 is right when content has a clear replacement. Sending every unknown URL to the homepage is the tempting shortcut and the wrong one: Google describes a page that tells users it is missing while returning a success code, or redirecting to an unrelated page, as a soft 404. It frustrates visitors and muddies what crawlers learn about your site.

When you add a redirect, confirm the result. Request the old URL and check that it returns 301 and lands on the intended page, not a chain of hops or a page that itself errors.
Let deleted content stay deleted
If a product, post or campaign is gone for good and no page serves the same purpose, a 404 or 410 is honest and sufficient. Google treats the two the same for this purpose, so choose whichever your setup handles more easily. Google’s Crawl Stats documentation also notes that not all 404s can or should be fixed, and that a real 404 is correct for pages that are gone.

Make the 404 page useful without faking success
Google’s crawling-error guidance supports a custom error page that helps people. Make it clear that the page wasn’t found, keep your normal navigation and look, and consider adding useful links, a search box, or a way to report a broken link. Then verify the server still sends a 404 status. Many themes do this correctly by default, but a quick check of the response code is worth doing after any change.

Plugins such as 404 to 301, listed in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory, describe 404 logs showing the requested URL and referrer, filters separating internal from outside referrers, request-type filtering, and custom 301, 302 or 307 rules created from logged errors. Those are the vendor’s own feature claims; they are not independently tested here, and other redirect managers offer similar functions.

Use such a log as a list to review, not a list to clear. Sort for these patterns:

- Internal referrers: your own pages contain a bad link. Fix it at the source.
- Repeated requests for the same near-miss of a real page: redirect to the real page.
- Old URLs of moved content that still receive visits: 301 to the replacement.
- One-off junk requests with no referrer: ignore them.
Avoid bulk-redirecting everything in the log to one page; that recreates the soft-404 problem at scale.
