Wool vs. Down vs. Synthetic Insulation: Which Is Best for Winter?

There is no single best winter insulation. Choose down for cold, dry weather when low weight and small packed size matter; choose synthetic insulation for damp conditions, wet snow, or high-output activity; and choose wool mainly as a base or mid layer that manages moisture next to your skin. A waterproof shell and sensible layering can shift the best choice, but neither makes insulation immune to saturation.

The key comparison is not three equivalent jacket fills. Down and synthetic normally describe lofted insulation inside an outer garment. Wool is most often a fabric used in base layers, sweaters, socks, and some insulating garments. Its crimped fibres trap air and buffer moisture, while jacket fills are engineered primarily for maximum loft.

The short answer by winter condition

Situation Best starting point Why Important limitation
Cold, dry weather; backpacking, climbing, or travel Down jacket Excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and compressibility Moisture can collapse loft and make drying slow
Cold rain, wet snow, or frequent dampness Synthetic insulated jacket Retains useful warmth when wet and dries faster Usually heavier and bulkier than down for comparable warmth
Stop-start exercise, skiing, commuting, or high perspiration Synthetic outer or mid layer, often with a wool base layer Synthetic tolerates moisture; wool buffers moisture against the skin Breathability, vents, fit, and exertion level still determine comfort
Next-to-skin comfort and odour management Wool, commonly Merino Breathability, moisture buffering, and natural odour resistance Fabric weight and fit matter; wool is not a waterproof shell
Lowest purchase cost in the same general category Often synthetic REI describes synthetic insulation as relatively affordable compared with down Actual prices vary by garment, construction, and market
Animal-free fill preference Synthetic REI identifies synthetic jackets as vegan Check every component, including face fabric and trims

These are starting points, not temperature ratings. A lightly insulated synthetic jacket can be colder than a heavily insulated down jacket, and a thick wool sweater can be warmer than either in a particular outfit. Compare the complete garment, not the fibre name alone.

Why wool is not a direct substitute for a puffy fill

Down clusters and synthetic filaments are used as lofted fills. They create a relatively thick, stable layer of still air inside a jacket, and the jacket’s baffles, shell fabric, fit, and insulation amount determine how that air is retained.

Wool fibres have a natural crimp that creates air pockets, and wool clothing can be highly effective in a base layer or mid layer. The Woolmark Company says, “Wool’s natural crimp provides superior insulation.” However, wool apparel is usually selected for next-to-skin comfort, moisture management, and layering rather than the maximum warmth per gram expected from a modern puffy jacket. REI likewise cautions that wool and fleece do not perform the same air-trapping role as down and synthetic jacket fills. REI’s insulated-outerwear guide explains this distinction.

That difference matters when a product label says “wool insulation.” The garment may use wool batting, a wool-blend panel, or a wool fabric shell rather than a high-loft fill. Ask how much insulation is present, where it is placed, and whether the garment is intended as a base, mid, or outer layer.

How each material keeps you warm

Down: maximum loft from very little material

Down consists of fine clusters that expand into a three-dimensional network of air spaces. Fill power measures the volume occupied by one ounce of down. Patagonia’s June 22, 2026 guide gives the example that 650 cubic inches of volume per ounce corresponds to 650 fill power. A higher number means more loft from the same down weight; it does not by itself establish the total warmth of a jacket. Baffle design, the amount of down, fit, fabric, and features such as a hood also matter.

Synthetic: engineered fibres that keep working when damp

Synthetic fills use manufactured fibres arranged to hold air. Their central advantage is predictable performance when exposed to moisture. They generally do not match down’s warmth-to-weight or compression, but they are a dependable choice when precipitation, sweat, or repeated wetting is likely.

Wool: crimped fibres and moisture buffering

Wool’s crimp traps still air while the fibre can absorb and release water vapour. Woolmark says wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight before feeling wet and clinging to skin. That is a fibre-level claim, not a promise that every wool garment stays dry in rain. A wool layer can feel comfortable through changing activity levels because it buffers vapour rather than immediately transferring all moisture to the skin.

Down in detail

Where down is strongest

Down is usually the best option when the air is cold and dry and you need the most warmth for the least packed volume. REI lists warmth, low weight, and compressibility as core advantages, with backpacking, climbing, travel, and other dry-cold uses fitting that profile. Patagonia similarly describes down as suited to cold-to-freezing conditions when it remains dry. A down jacket can disappear into a small pack and provide substantial stationary warmth at camp or during breaks.

What moisture does to down

When down becomes wet, clusters can clump and lose loft, reducing insulation. Water-resistant treatments can delay wetting from light precipitation, but REI notes that heavy rain or submersion can still saturate treated down. Drying is also slower than with most synthetic fills. A down garment therefore works best with a weather-resistant shell, careful storage, and a plan for keeping it out of prolonged rain or wet snow.

How to use down safely in a clothing system

  • Wear a moisture-managing base layer so sweat does not accumulate inside the insulation.
  • Use a shell when precipitation is possible; the shell protects the down but does not make the system invulnerable to saturation.
  • Carry a synthetic layer instead when the forecast involves repeated wet exposure or when you cannot dry the jacket.
  • Follow the garment maker’s care label and dry the jacket completely after any dampness before storing it.

Synthetic insulation in detail

Where synthetic is strongest

Synthetic insulation is the dependable default for cold, wet environments and energetic winter activity. REI highlights warmth when wet, quick drying, and suitability for cold, damp conditions. Those properties help during snowshoeing, skiing, cycling, commuting, or work in weather where precipitation and perspiration are unavoidable.

The trade-off for wet-weather reliability

For a comparable level of warmth, synthetic jackets are generally bulkier and heavier than down and do not compress as small. That penalty may be irrelevant if the jacket is worn continuously or carried only short distances. It matters more for a climber or backpacker counting every gram and cubic centimetre.

Breathability still depends on the whole jacket

Synthetic fill does not automatically prevent overheating. Face fabric, lining, pattern, vents, hood, and fit influence how quickly vapour escapes. In high-output activity, a less insulated synthetic layer with easy venting can be more comfortable than a heavily insulated one, even though both use the same type of fill.

Wool in detail

Best role: base and mid layers

Wool is particularly useful next to the skin, where its moisture buffering and odour resistance can improve comfort over long days. A wool base layer can complement either a down or synthetic jacket. In a layered system, the wool handles the microclimate at your skin while the lofted jacket supplies most of the stationary warmth.

What the moisture claims mean

Woolmark reports that wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight before feeling wet and clinging to skin. It also reports a particular post-exercise comparison in very cold conditions in which people in synthetic garments experienced three times more chilling than those in wool garments. That is an organisation-reported result from a specific comparison, not a universal ranking of every wool and synthetic garment.

Woolmark also says that one kilogram of dry wool absorbing moisture can release heat equivalent to an electric blanket running for eight hours. This describes heat associated with moisture absorption at the fibre level; it is not a practical garment warmth rating and should not be used to predict a jacket’s temperature range.

Where wool cannot replace an outer shell

Wool fabric can become saturated in rain and snow. It may remain comfortable in damp air, but it is not a waterproof barrier. If precipitation is expected, pair it with a shell and choose down or synthetic fill according to how wet the insulation itself is likely to become.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision factor Down Synthetic Wool
Primary clothing role Lofted jacket fill Lofted jacket fill Usually base or mid-layer fabric; sometimes batting or insulation
Dry-cold warmth-to-weight Usually strongest Usually lower than down Depends heavily on fabric weight and garment design
Compression Excellent Generally less compact Woven or knitted garments do not compress like down clusters
Performance when wet Loft can collapse; drying is slow Retains useful warmth and dries faster Buffers vapour but can eventually become saturated
High-output use Best reserved for dry, lower-output periods or breaks Practical outer or mid layer Useful next to skin; warmth depends on fabric weight
Odour and next-to-skin comfort Not normally used as a base fabric Varies by fibre and treatment Natural odour resistance and moisture buffering are common reasons to choose it
Cost tendency Often higher than synthetic, but prices vary Often relatively affordable according to REI Varies widely by fibre quality, weight, and construction
Animal-free fill No Yes, according to REI’s category description No, when made from animal wool

There is no independently verified head-to-head statistic that ranks wool, down, and synthetic insulation in equivalent winter garments. Treat the table as a decision framework, not a laboratory league table.

Weather changes the answer more than the thermometer

“Cold” is not one condition. A clear, dry day at −10°C can favour down, while a near-freezing day with rain and wind can favour synthetic insulation because moisture is the larger threat. Wind protection, humidity, precipitation type, activity level, and the ability to dry clothing may matter more than a small difference in air temperature.

A waterproof or highly water-resistant shell can protect a down jacket from precipitation. That arrangement works when the shell keeps the down dry and you can manage interior sweat. It is a poor plan if the jacket will repeatedly be soaked from the outside or inside and there is no opportunity to dry it. In that case, synthetic fill offers more resilience.

Match the insulation to your activity

Backpacking and climbing

For dry forecasts, a lightweight down jacket offers the most warmth for the space and weight in your pack. If the route includes persistent rain, wet vegetation, or limited drying opportunities, the lower packed efficiency of synthetic insulation may be a worthwhile safety margin. Many people carry a down layer for camp and a synthetic layer for active or wet periods rather than expecting one jacket to do every job.

Skiing and snow sports

Choose based on whether you spend more time moving or waiting. High-output downhill runs can favour a breathable synthetic mid layer, while cold lift rides and long pauses may favour more loft. A shell, pit zips or other vents, and the ability to remove a layer often matter as much as the fill.

Commuting and everyday winter use

If your route includes wet snow, rain, crowded public transport, and frequent temperature changes, synthetic insulation is usually easier to live with. A wool base layer can add comfort without requiring a bulky jacket. If your commute is consistently dry and you value a very light coat, down can be practical when protected from precipitation.

Cold-weather travel

Down is attractive when luggage space is limited and the destination is cold and dry. Synthetic is safer when the itinerary includes humid weather, rain, or activities where you cannot control exposure. Wool is useful for repeated wear because its moisture and odour characteristics can reduce the need to change base layers frequently.

A practical decision tree

  1. Will the insulation face prolonged rain, wet snow, or frequent saturation? If yes, start with synthetic. If no, continue.
  2. Is minimum packed weight and volume the main priority? If yes, start with down. If no, continue.
  3. Will you sweat heavily or alternate between hard movement and standing still? Use a synthetic outer or mid layer, and consider wool next to the skin.
  4. Are you choosing a base layer rather than a puffy jacket? Wool is a strong starting point for moisture buffering and comfort.
  5. Do animal-free materials matter? Synthetic is the category starting point, but inspect the full product specification.
  6. Can you protect and dry the insulation? If you can reliably keep it dry, down’s efficiency becomes more valuable. If you cannot, synthetic’s wet-weather reliability becomes more valuable.

How to compare two jackets correctly

Do not compare a down fill-power number directly with a synthetic insulation weight or a wool fabric weight. Fill power describes the volume occupied by one ounce of down; it is useful for comparing down products but does not tell you the total warmth of a complete jacket. REI similarly cautions that insulation-weight specifications are meaningful mainly among garments using the same insulation type.

  • Check the complete garment’s stated insulation amount where the manufacturer provides it.
  • Look at hood, hem, cuffs, baffles, and coverage; heat loss is not determined by the torso fill alone.
  • Assess the shell’s resistance to wind and precipitation.
  • Consider fit: a jacket that is too tight can compress loft, while an overly loose one can allow warm air to escape.
  • Compare packed size only when the measurement method is comparable; “packs into a pocket” is not a standardized volume.
  • Read care instructions and decide whether you can realistically dry and maintain the garment.

Layering systems that make each material work

Dry, cold, low-output system

Use a wool or other moisture-managing base layer, a down jacket for insulation, and a wind- or water-resistant shell when needed. Keep the down layer dry and vent before sweat accumulates.

Mixed system for uncertain forecasts

Carry a compact down layer for stationary warmth and a synthetic shell or insulating layer for wet periods. This uses down where its weight advantage matters and synthetic where moisture risk is highest.

Care, storage, and failure prevention

  • Keep down away from prolonged rain and wet snow; a shell is most useful when worn before the precipitation begins.
  • Dry any damp insulation fully according to its care label before long-term storage.
  • Do not assume a water-resistant treatment makes down submersion-proof.
  • For synthetic garments, take advantage of faster drying but still follow the manufacturer’s washing and drying instructions.
  • For wool, follow the fibre-care label; avoid treating a wool base layer as a waterproof garment.
  • Carry a backup plan on trips where a wet jacket could become a safety problem.

Common mistakes

Choosing by the highest number

A 900-fill-power down jacket is not automatically warmer than every 650-fill-power jacket, because total down quantity and construction also determine warmth. Likewise, a heavier synthetic jacket may be warmer than a very light down jacket. Numbers must be interpreted within the same insulation category and complete garment.

Treating wool as a puffy replacement

A thick wool sweater may feel warm, but it usually does not deliver the same warmth-to-weight or packability as a lofted down or synthetic jacket. Use wool where its moisture and comfort properties solve a base- or mid-layer problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring sweat

Rain is not the only source of moisture. Hard exertion can wet insulation from inside, especially under a shell. Vent early, choose an appropriate insulation amount, and use wool or another suitable base layer to manage the skin-level microclimate.

Comparing fibre names instead of garments

Shell fabric, baffle design, hood, fit, vents, insulation quantity, and coverage can overwhelm the difference between two fill materials. Evaluate the whole clothing system and the conditions in which you will wear it.

Bottom line

Pick down for dry cold and the smallest, lightest pack. Pick synthetic insulation when wet weather, sweat, or limited drying makes reliability more important than minimum weight. Pick wool primarily for a moisture-managing base or mid layer, then add the down or synthetic outer layer that matches the weather. The best winter setup is the one whose insulation, shell, fit, and layering plan match your actual exposure—not a universal winner chosen from a fibre label.
