Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no proven universal winner. Outdoor life depends on the particular clothespin’s construction and how much sun and rain it gets—not just whether it is called wooden or plastic. If your line is in strong, prolonged sun, look for a specific UV-protection claim. If you leave pins outdoors between laundry days, bringing them in or storing them in a bag is a sensible way to limit exposure.
What the product details say
The published product information supports a practical comparison, not a definitive lifespan ranking. IKEA describes one plastic peg as UV-light protected, while The Home Depot lists a wooden clothespin as suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Neither statement establishes how many seasons the complete pin will last, and neither is a controlled comparison against the other.

The sources include product listings, a buying guide that says it did not test the products it discusses, and a consumer discussion. None reports a standardized side-by-side outdoor exposure test or measured service life. That means claims such as “plastic always lasts longer” or “wood always lasts longer” go beyond what those sources establish. No reliable comparative statistic or suitable expert or standards-body statement resolving the question is available in these materials.
Individual Reddit commenters describe plastic pins exposed to UV becoming brittle and say that leaving pins in rain affects them. One discussion title refers to clothespins that have lasted over six years; individual commenters also say that pins exposed to UV died in a year and that leaving them in rain was not helping. These remarks reflect personal experience, not representative testing. They do not establish how common the outcomes are, whether the pins were made of comparable materials, or how long a different product will last.

How the specific products compare
| Example | Published construction or claim | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| IKEA SLIBB Clothes pin, model 305.677.32 | IKEA lists a polypropylene clamp, acetal spring and polyamide loop. Its product description says the peg is “UV-light protected, which helps the plastic last longer.” | No UV rating, expected service life, grip-force result or controlled comparison with a wooden pin is stated. |
| Everbilt Natural Wood Clothespins, model 72966, 50-pack | The Home Depot listing says the pins are suitable for indoor and outdoor use and describes the wood as rust resistant and non-staining. | The listing does not establish the full pin’s outdoor lifetime or the spring’s material, corrosion performance or service life. |
| PolyGrip clothespins, 24-count | Dutchman’s Store describes them as UV-resistant molded poly with a stainless-steel spring. | These are seller-provided claims; no UV rating, test method, expected life or measured grip result is stated. |
The examples show why “plastic” is too broad a category for a useful durability judgment. IKEA identifies several components and a UV-protection feature; Dutchman’s Store describes a different plastic construction and a stainless-steel spring. Those details are more informative than a material label alone, but they still do not prove that either product outlasts a wooden pin in your conditions.
They also show why a claim about one component should not be mistaken for a promise about the entire pin. IKEA’s wording says UV protection helps the plastic last longer; it does not give a service life for the spring or loop, or promise that the peg will withstand unlimited exposure. The Home Depot’s wording about rust-resistant wood and outdoor use does not specify the spring. The PolyGrip description identifies its spring as stainless steel, but does not supply a comparative test or lifespan. In each case, the description is useful for screening a product, not for predicting a precise replacement date.
Choose for your sun, rain and storage routine
If the line gets prolonged direct sun
Give priority to a product with an explicit UV-protection or UV-resistance claim, and check which model the claim applies to. IKEA’s statement concerns its SLIBB peg specifically; the PolyGrip description is the seller’s claim about that product. Neither source provides a UV rating or a service-life figure, so treat the claim as a reason to consider the pin, not a guarantee of years outdoors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not assume that all plastic pins have the same formulation or protection just because they share a broad material category. The useful buying question is whether the particular package or product page makes a UV claim and whether it names the product to which the claim applies. If there is no claim, the product information cited here does not give a basis for assuming UV protection. Conversely, a UV claim alone does not settle how the complete pin will perform when also exposed to rain, repeated use and the weight of laundry.

If pins stay out between laundry days
Storage can reduce how long pins remain exposed between uses. AirDry Co’s clothespin guide recommends a bag for pins that would otherwise remain clipped to an outdoor line. The guide does not test whether a bag extends pin life or by how much, so think of this as a straightforward care habit rather than a quantified durability improvement.
A storage bag is an optional accessory, not a special requirement for either material. The practical choice is whether you can easily collect the pins after hanging laundry and keep them off the line until the next load. Bringing them indoors or using a bag addresses the same basic habit: not leaving pins exposed when they are not needed. If you know you will leave them outside, factor that routine into your product choice rather than judging a pin solely by its material.
If rain exposure is the main concern
Do not assume that an outdoor-use label proves a pin will tolerate continuous weather indefinitely. The Home Depot listing markets the Everbilt wooden pins for indoor and outdoor use, but does not give a lifetime for the whole pin or spring. For either material, bring pins in when practical if they would otherwise remain exposed; compare the spring construction and any explicit weather-related claims before buying.

The reader discussion includes personal comments about rain as well as sun, but those comments do not tell you how much rain exposure a product can tolerate or let you rank wood against plastic. A pin used on a line only while laundry is drying and then stored indoors has a different exposure routine from one left clipped outside day and night. The reviewed product descriptions do not quantify those conditions, so use your routine as a factor in choosing and caring for pins, not as a formula for predicting a number of years.

What to check before buying
- Look for a claim tied to the exact product. “UV-protected” or “UV-resistant” is more specific than simply “plastic,” but check whether the manufacturer or seller explains a rating or test. The cited product descriptions do not publish one. Note whether the claim is for the exact model and whether it comes from the manufacturer or a retailer.
- Check the parts, not only the clamp material. A pin is a combination of parts, not just a clamp. IKEA lists a polypropylene clamp, an acetal spring and a polyamide loop in SLIBB; the PolyGrip seller describes molded poly and a stainless-steel spring. The Everbilt listing does not specify its spring material, so do not infer it from the wood description. If spring construction matters to your choice, look for it in the product details rather than assuming all pins use the same kind.
- Consider the grip you need. The available listings do not provide comparable grip-force measurements. If possible, check whether a pin holds your usual garments securely on your line without damaging fabric. A durability claim does not tell you how well a pin grips. Think about your normal laundry and the line you use, but do not treat a product’s material or outdoor-use wording as a measurement of holding force.
- Compare cost per pin, not just pack price. Divide the price by the number of pins in each pack. The Everbilt example is sold as a 50-pack and the PolyGrip example is a 24-count; prices are not established here, so compare current listings at the time you shop. A lower unit cost alone cannot reveal which option will need replacing sooner, because the sources do not provide comparable service-life data.
- Account for where you keep them. A shaded line and pins stored indoors between uses are different conditions from pins left in direct sun and rain. Match the product’s stated features to your routine rather than treating an outdoor-use label as a universal guarantee. Consider whether the pins will spend most of their time outside or only be exposed while laundry is hanging.
- Look for actual service-life evidence. A published duration, test method and exposure conditions would make products easier to compare. The cited listings and guide do not provide comparable outdoor lifespan results. If a listing offers only a general durability phrase, it cannot tell you how many seasons to expect or whether the claim was measured under conditions like yours.
These checks are useful even if you already know which material you prefer. Someone shopping for wooden pins can still ask whether the product is actually marketed for outdoor use and what is known about its spring. Someone shopping for plastic pins can still distinguish a pin with a specific UV claim from one whose listing merely says plastic. In either case, the available descriptions leave important questions unanswered, so avoid turning one favorable feature into a guarantee of overall outdoor durability.
A practical choice by scenario
| Your situation | Reasonable approach | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Strong, sustained sun; you want plastic pins | Consider a specific pin with an explicit UV-protection claim, such as the cited SLIBB description, and check its component details. | The claim does not establish a number of seasons or prove it beats every wooden pin. |
| You prefer wood and want pins marketed for outdoor use | The Everbilt listing provides an example described by its retailer as suitable for indoor and outdoor use. | The listing is not a comparative test and does not establish the full pin’s lifespan. |
| You leave pins on the line between uses | Consider taking them in or using a clothespin storage bag, as AirDry Co’s guide recommends. | No reviewed source quantifies how much storage changes service life. |
| You want the longest-lasting option, regardless of material | Compare exact UV claims, spring materials, construction, cost per pin and your exposure routine; prioritize products that publish test conditions and lifespan if available. | The product listings, guide and consumer comments do not identify a proven longest-lasting material or product. |
Frequently asked questions
Do plastic clothespins become brittle in the sun?
Some individual commenters in the Reddit discussion describe UV-exposed plastic pins becoming brittle, but anecdotes do not establish how commonly that happens or how long a particular pin will last. Plastic products also differ: IKEA says its SLIBB peg is UV-light protected, and Dutchman’s Store describes PolyGrip as UV-resistant. Neither listing gives a UV rating or expected service life. For a sunny line, look for a claim tied to the exact product rather than assuming every plastic pin has the same protection.
Are wooden clothespins suitable for outdoor use?
The Home Depot listing describes the Everbilt Natural Wood Clothespins, model 72966, as suitable for indoor and outdoor use, and calls the wood rust resistant and non-staining. That is the retailer’s product description, not a controlled durability result. It does not establish how long the full pin or its spring will last outdoors.

Which clothespin spring is best outdoors?
The cited listings do not provide a controlled comparison of spring performance. IKEA lists an acetal spring in SLIBB, while Dutchman’s Store describes PolyGrip as having a stainless-steel spring. The Everbilt listing does not specify its spring material. These details help you compare construction, but they do not establish which spring lasts longer in a particular outdoor setting.
How can I tell which pin holds clothes more securely?
The listed products do not publish comparable grip-force measurements. If you can inspect a pin before buying, consider whether it holds your usual garments on your line without damaging fabric. Do not infer grip strength from a UV claim, a material label or an outdoor-use description.
How many seasons should wooden or plastic pins last?
The reviewed sources provide no reliable, comparable service-life figure for either material. Product descriptions do not state an expected number of seasons, and individual consumer comments are not representative lifespan data. Any precise prediction would depend on details the listings do not measure, including the particular pin and how it is exposed and stored.
Bottom line on outdoor durability
Choose by the pin’s specific construction and the way you use it. For a sunny clothesline, an explicit UV-protection claim is a useful feature to investigate; for any pin, keeping it out of the weather between uses is a sensible habit. Wooden pins are marketed for outdoor use too. But product descriptions and consumer anecdotes do not provide controlled, comparable lifespan data, so neither material can be declared the categorical winner.
