There is no single official WooCommerce VPS size. WooCommerce 10.8 and later requires WordPress 6.9 or newer, PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, HTTPS, and a WordPress memory limit of at least 256 MB. Those are software and PHP-policy requirements, not a complete VPS specification.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
For capacity, size the server around concurrent uncached requests, checkout activity, scheduled jobs, catalog and media volume, imports, backups and growth. A 2 vCPU or 4 vCPU plan can be a sensible benchmark starting point, but neither guarantees a particular order rate. Total RAM must cover the operating system, database, PHP-FPM workers, caches and safety headroom; storage should be SSD or NVMe and measured against real disk growth.

What WooCommerce officially requires
WooCommerce’s current Server Recommendations document, covering WooCommerce 10.8 and later, says a host should support the following:
- WordPress 6.9 or greater
- PHP 8.3 or greater, tested up to PHP 8.4
- MySQL 8.0 or greater, or MariaDB 10.6 or greater
- HTTPS
- A WordPress memory limit of 256 MB or greater
These are minimum compatibility conditions. They do not tell you how many visitors, simultaneous checkouts, products or background jobs a VPS can handle. WooCommerce publishes no universal minimum for CPU cores or disk capacity.

Apache HTTPD and nginx are the robust web-server choices cited by WooCommerce and the WordPress Hosting Handbook. Depending on your extensions and integrations, you may also need cURL or fsockopen, SOAP, the Multibyte String extension for some non-English stores, pretty-permalink support and compatible SQL modes. If your host cannot meet a requirement, WooCommerce advises contacting the host or choosing a WooCommerce hosting partner or dedicated WordPress host.
CPU: how many vCPUs does WooCommerce need?
There is no official WooCommerce core minimum. CPU demand is created by the work your store performs, especially when a request cannot be served from cache.
What consumes CPU
- Product, cart, checkout and account requests that execute PHP.
- wp-admin work such as editing products, reports and order management.
- Scheduled Actions, cron tasks, email jobs and webhook processing.
- Large product imports, exports, feed generation and search indexing.
- Plugin integrations that call payment, shipping, tax, inventory or marketing services.
- Database queries and PHP rendering for uncached pages.
Per-core performance matters because many PHP requests are latency-sensitive and do not automatically become faster when more cores are added. Add vCPUs when several requests must run at once, background queues remain busy, or CPU-ready time and queue depth stay elevated during normal peaks.
Is 2 vCPU enough?
Two vCPUs can be a reasonable starting configuration for a small or lightly concurrent store to benchmark. It is not an order-volume guarantee. A store with a modest catalog but a complex page builder, heavy search, frequent imports or many simultaneous checkouts can outgrow two fast cores sooner than a simpler store with more products.

Four vCPUs provides more parallel capacity for concurrent PHP requests and scheduled work, but it does not fix slow SQL, inefficient plugins, insufficient memory or a slow external integration. Treat both figures as testable starting points rather than universal tiers.
How to validate CPU capacity
- Record normal and peak concurrent users, checkout attempts, admin activity and scheduled-job volume.
- Run a representative load test against a staging copy or a controlled maintenance window. Include cart and checkout paths, not only cached home pages.
- Watch sustained CPU utilization, CPU steal or ready time, PHP-FPM queue length, request latency and Action Scheduler backlog.
- Increase vCPUs when queues and latency remain high after query, plugin and cache tuning. If CPU is not saturated but requests stall, investigate RAM, database waits, storage I/O or remote APIs instead.
RAM: the memory limit is not the VPS’s total memory
WooCommerce requires a WordPress memory limit of at least 256 MB. The WordPress Hosting Handbook lists 128M as its 2026 minimum PHP limit for a vanilla installation, 256M as a typical production default, and 512M or more for WooCommerce and other resource-intensive sites.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
memory_limit is a per-PHP-process policy. It does not mean that a VPS with 512 MB of physical RAM is suitable, nor does raising it automatically add memory. Total VPS RAM must be shared by every service and by the operating system.
What total RAM has to cover
- The operating system, kernel and web server.
- MySQL or MariaDB buffers, connections and temporary tables.
- PHP-FPM workers and their real resident memory, which can vary by theme and plugin.
- OPcache and a persistent object cache such as APCu, Memcached or Redis.
- WordPress cron, Action Scheduler, imports, image processing and command-line jobs.
- Monitoring, security tools, logs, backup processes and emergency headroom.
Do not size RAM by multiplying the PHP limit by a guessed worker count. Workers rarely use their full limit on every request, while database and operating-system use can be substantial. Measure the stack under realistic traffic and leave enough unused capacity to absorb a sale, an import or a backup without swapping.

Signals that RAM is too low
- Swap usage grows during ordinary traffic instead of remaining an emergency reserve.
- The kernel records out-of-memory kills or PHP-FPM workers are repeatedly terminated.
- PHP-FPM reaches its worker limit while CPU remains available.
- Database queries slow as the buffer pool competes with PHP and the operating system.
- Image imports, updates or backups fail only when several jobs overlap.
First identify which process is consuming memory. Reduce excessive PHP concurrency, reschedule heavy jobs, remove leaking or unnecessary extensions and tune the database where appropriate. Increase the VPS plan when measured working sets still leave no safe headroom.
Storage: calculate capacity instead of counting products
WooCommerce sets no fixed disk minimum. Product count alone is a poor predictor because a small catalog can contain large originals, downloadable files, many generated thumbnails and long backup retention.
Include every storage category
- Operating-system packages, web server, PHP and database files.
- WordPress core, themes, plugins and deployment or staging copies.
- Original product images, responsive thumbnails, videos and downloadable products.
- Database tables, indexes, revisions, sessions, logs and scheduled-action data.
- Temporary files created by imports, exports, image conversion and updates.
- At least one local working backup, plus separately stored off-site backups.
- Rollback copies and free space for upgrades, database repairs and emergency exports.
SSD or NVMe-backed storage is preferable for PHP and database I/O. Capacity and performance are separate questions: a large disk with poor I/O can still make checkout and administration slow, while fast storage does not help if backup retention fills it.
A practical storage worksheet
- Measure the current WordPress directory, uploads directory and database, including binary logs and temporary files.
- Measure the size and retention of local backups and staging copies.
- Calculate recent monthly growth for media, database tables and logs.
- Add the space needed for the largest planned import, update or image-generation job.
- Reserve free-space headroom rather than treating the advertised disk size as usable capacity.
- Review the result monthly and adjust retention or the VPS disk as actual growth changes.
Keep disaster-recovery backups off the VPS. A local backup protects against some application mistakes, but it does not protect against a failed disk, a compromised server or an account-wide outage.

Software stack and caching requirements
Choose a supported PHP branch
The WordPress Hosting Handbook recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production and lists PHP 8.4 and 8.5 in active support. PHP 8.3 moved to security-only support on 31 December 2025, and PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on 31 December 2026. Confirm that your plugins, payment modules and host support the branch before switching, then test the complete checkout flow.
Use OPcache and one persistent object cache
OPcache stores compiled PHP bytecode so repeated requests do not recompile every file. A persistent object cache—APCu, Memcached or Redis—can retain frequently used WordPress and WooCommerce data and reduce repeated database work. Use one compatible strategy, monitor hit rate and evictions, and allocate its memory explicitly.
Caching is not a substitute for CPU, RAM or a healthy database. Full-page caching must bypass the cart, checkout, account, order-received and other personalized pages. A cached product page is useful; serving one customer’s cart or account response to another customer is a correctness failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between VPS plans
When comparing plans, look beyond the headline vCPU and RAM numbers. The following attributes affect real WooCommerce performance and operating risk.
Best Value
| Area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| CPU | Are vCPUs guaranteed or shared? Which CPU generation and per-core speed are used? Is CPU steal time monitored? |
| Memory | How much RAM is available to the instance? Is swap enabled and documented? Can the database and PHP workers retain headroom? |
| Storage | Is the disk SSD or NVMe? Are IOPS or throughput limits stated? Does backup storage consume the same disk allocation? |
| PHP runtime | Can you choose a supported PHP branch and change memory_limit, max_execution_time and max_input_vars? |
| Database | Which MySQL or MariaDB versions are offered? Can you tune them and inspect slow queries? |
| Caching | Is persistent object-cache support available, and can you monitor hit rate and evictions? |
| Network and recovery | Are bandwidth and egress limited? What uptime, backup, staging, restore and scaling controls are included? |
| Operations | What does managed support cover? Are patching, firewall configuration, migration and incident response included? |
Managed or self-managed VPS?
A VPS supplies an isolated virtual operating system with an allocated amount of RAM and more control than typical shared hosting. You can run your own PHP, Apache or nginx and MySQL or MariaDB instances, making resource behavior more predictable. The trade-off is higher cost and greater operational responsibility.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose managed service when
- No team member can reliably patch the operating system, PHP and database.
- You need help with firewall rules, backups, monitoring, migrations or incidents.
- The store’s revenue makes downtime more expensive than the management fee.
Choose self-managed service when
- Someone owns security updates, service hardening and restore testing.
- You can monitor CPU, memory, disk, PHP-FPM, database health and queues continuously.
- You have a tested rollback plan for PHP, plugin and database changes.
Neither model removes the need to configure WordPress correctly. A managed provider may operate the server, but you still need compatibility testing, safe cache exclusions and verified backups.
A repeatable sizing and scaling process
- Document the workload. Record peak concurrent users, orders per minute, catalog size, media growth, import frequency, integrations and backup retention.
- Meet the software baseline. Install supported WordPress, PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, HTTPS and the required PHP extensions. Set the WordPress memory limit to match the workload, with 512M or more as the Hosting Handbook’s resource-intensive tier.
- Start with a measurable configuration. Use a small VPS configuration such as 2 vCPUs for a low-concurrency store, or a 4-vCPU configuration when more parallel work is expected, and record why you chose it. These are benchmarks, not guarantees.
- Load-test uncached paths. Test login, cart, checkout, order creation, account pages, admin tasks and scheduled jobs. Do not judge capacity from a cached landing page alone.
- Enable and verify caching. Use OPcache and one persistent object cache. Confirm that personalized WooCommerce pages bypass full-page caching.
- Monitor before a crisis. Alert on sustained CPU pressure, swap, OOM events, PHP-FPM saturation, slow queries, disk growth, backup failures and Action Scheduler backlog.
- Scale the bottleneck. Add vCPUs for sustained concurrency, RAM for working-set pressure, faster or larger storage for I/O and capacity constraints, and database or plugin optimization when the resource itself is not the cause.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Confusing the PHP limit with physical RAM
A 512 MB PHP limit is a request policy, not a recommendation for a 512 MB VPS. Check total process memory, database usage and swap before changing the limit.
Buying cores to fix every slowdown
More vCPUs cannot repair a missing database index, an inefficient plugin, a blocked remote API or a full disk. Identify the saturated resource first.
Using full-page cache on checkout
Exclude cart, checkout, account and other session-specific routes. Purge and retest after changing cache rules.
Ignoring background work
Imports, image generation, webhooks and scheduled actions can consume CPU, memory and I/O after visitor traffic appears normal. Monitor and schedule them so they do not collide with peak sales periods.
Filling the VPS with backups
Retain a local working backup for quick recovery, but send durable copies off-site and monitor disk use and retention automatically.
