At Birulia Bazar in Nandigram II, Adhikari said: “Yes, we chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’, but we don’t force you to do it. You can choose not to and just say ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’.” Hindustan Times attributed that wording to PTI; India Today and The New Indian Express reported the same central message, with minor differences in spelling and punctuation.

The appeal was not only about a slogan. Adhikari presented the vote as an opening for political friendship and participation in development work. Hindustan Times reported him saying at Debipur: “Make friendship, we will walk together; you will also be a partner in the development work.”
Why there was a by-election in Nandigram
Adhikari was campaigning for Hasirani Rath. The cited reports identify Rath as the mother of Chandranath Rath, Adhikari’s former aide, who was killed on May 6, 2026. The Nandigram seat became vacant after Adhikari resigned: he had won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the April 2026 assembly election. The October 6 poll was therefore a by-election to fill the seat.

The wider campaign context
Adhikari made the appeal during a sharply contested campaign. In remarks reported by the outlets, he said the Trinamool Congress (TMC) had “ceased to exist” and made claims about political rivals, government work, recruitment and the investigation into Rath’s killing. Those are Adhikari’s political assertions, not independently established facts in the cited coverage.
India Today and The New Indian Express also reported Adhikari’s claim that his government had published a merit list for 12,000 police constables and his promise that one lakh appointments would be made within a year. These figures describe what he claimed and promised; they do not establish completed appointments or independently verify the recruitment process.

What the population figures do—and do not—show
The Times of India reported estimates that Muslims make up about 35%–40% of Nandigram Block 1’s population and 12% of Block 2’s. These are newspaper-reported block-level estimates; the underlying primary data and method are not established in the cited coverage. They are not figures for the whole district and do not show how any community voted.

What the reports establish
The reports document a campaign appeal: Adhikari said minority voters were not required to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and could choose “Bharat Mata ki Jai,” while inviting them to support the BJP candidate and join development work.
