What Recoverit can—and cannot—recover
Recoverit is a self-service option for logical data loss, such as files deleted from a supported storage device or data lost after formatting. Whether a file can be restored depends on the device, file system, what happened to the data, and whether new data has overwritten it. A scan or preview is not proof that a complete, usable file can be recovered.

Wondershare’s Windows guide says Recoverit does not support recovery from physically damaged storage devices, overwritten files, or Android and iOS phones and tablets. For a drive with hardware failure or physical damage, the vendor recommends professional data recovery rather than a software scan. See the Recoverit Windows guide.
Stop writing to the affected device
As a precaution, stop saving files, installing software, or downloading anything to the drive where the missing data was stored. New writes can overwrite recoverable data. If the operating system or the drive itself is failing, avoid repeated attempts that could worsen the situation; seek professional help when the data is important or the hardware appears damaged.

Check compatibility before scanning
Recoverit’s supported device and file-system lists vary by product version and platform. The technical specifications list device categories including hard drives, SSDs, external drives, USB flash drives, cameras, and memory cards, and file systems including NTFS, FAT, exFAT, APFS, HFS+, ReFS, RAW, and some Linux file systems. Do not assume every combination works in every edition. Check the current Recoverit technical specifications for your operating system, device, and file system before proceeding.
The vendor’s pages show different version labels, so features described for one release should not automatically be treated as current on every platform. For example, the page published June 3, 2026, about what’s new in Recoverit 8.0 says its scan modes were combined into a thorough scan, except Recycle Bin/Trash, which retain a two-mode approach. That page also states that Windows preview is restricted to files under 30 MB, while Mac users can preview all data types without a stated file-size restriction. Confirm those details against the version you intend to use.

How to scan and recover files with Recoverit
The vendor’s Windows workflow is to select the lost-data location, scan it, inspect results, and recover selected files. Exact screen labels can change with the product version.

- Confirm the recovery source. Install and launch Recoverit on a working computer, then identify the drive or location where the files were lost. Avoid installing the recovery program onto the affected drive.
- Select the location. In Recoverit’s location-selection screen, choose the relevant drive, partition, or supported location and start the scan. The Windows guide describes selecting the affected location before scanning.
- Let the scan run and inspect its results. Use the available filters or result categories to find likely files. A scan may take time, and finding a file entry does not guarantee its contents remain intact.
- Preview when available. Preview can help identify a candidate file, but it does not prove that the recovered copy will be complete or usable.
- Select files and recover them to a different drive. Choose only the files you need and save recovered copies to separate storage, not back onto the source device. This helps avoid overwriting other data that may still be recoverable.
- Check the recovered copies. Open important files from the destination and verify that they work before relying on them.

When software recovery is the wrong choice
- The drive has physical symptoms. If it has suffered impact or liquid damage, or makes unusual noises, stop using it. Recoverit’s guide excludes physically damaged storage; the vendor recommends professional recovery.
- The missing files may have been overwritten. The Windows guide lists overwritten files among cases Recoverit does not support. Further use of the source device can reduce the chance of recovering remaining data.
- The device is a phone or tablet. The cited Windows guide excludes Android and iOS phones and tablets; do not assume a computer-drive recovery workflow applies.
- The device or file system is unsupported. Check the current technical specifications rather than scanning on the assumption that a device category or file system is supported.
- The data is irreplaceable or urgent. Software recovery is not guaranteed. If the data’s value outweighs the risk of a self-service attempt, consult a professional service before proceeding.
Free recovery limits, paid plans, and success claims
Wondershare’s free-edition page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists a free recovery allowance of up to 500 MB and shows Premium as unlimited. It displayed Premium at $64.99 per month on that date. Treat the price as a dated page observation, not a current quote: check the local offer, billing term, taxes, and renewal terms before buying. See the Recoverit free-edition page.
The same page reports a 99.5% recovery success rate based on the company’s internal testing. This is a vendor claim, not an independently verified rate or a prediction for an individual drive. The sources cited here do not establish a universal success probability for a particular deletion, format, device, or file system.

A bootable USB flash drive is relevant only to the crashed-computer toolkit described by Recoverit; it is not a remedy for damaged hardware or overwritten files. If you use recovery software, keep recovered files on a separate destination drive.
