Smart glasses are reviving a problem women identified during Google Glass’s early years: a camera worn on someone’s face can record people nearby without making that recording obvious to them. The concern is not that every wearer misuses a camera. It is that discreet capture, easy sharing and weakly understood safeguards can leave bystanders with little awareness or control—and that designers and platforms are again treating consent as an afterthought.
What did women warn about when Google Glass arrived?
Google Glass arrived in 2013. By 2014, women were raising concerns about men covertly recording them, including in nightclubs, according to TechRadar’s retrospective. Businesses also banned the device. The consumer Explorer Edition stopped being sold in January 2015.

Privacy was not the only reason the consumer product struggled: its price, appearance and lack of compelling everyday uses also mattered. The lasting lesson is not that privacy alone sank Glass. It is that a wearable camera has to work socially as well as technically. If people around the wearer cannot tell when they are being recorded, they may reject the device regardless of its other features.
What evidence is there that the problem has returned?
A study of public social-media videos
In an announcement dated 11 August 2026, the University of Sydney described an emerging study examining 350 publicly available Instagram videos posted between 2023 and 2026 and associated with pickup-artist communities. The researchers report examples of men approaching women while making discreet point-of-view recordings, then sharing footage for attention or social proof. They identify settings including workplaces, gyms and beaches.

That is evidence of documented examples, not a measure of how often smart-glasses wearers record people this way. The sample is not a population-wide survey of users, and the announcement describes an emerging study rather than a peer-reviewed paper inspected here. The researchers argue that existing online-safety and platform-governance approaches may fail to recognize some gendered harms.
A named account of discovering a video after it spread
CBS News interviewed Toluwa Omitowoju, who said people she knew sent her a social-media video of herself that she had not known was being recorded. She said she had not been asked before it was posted: “I had no say.” Her account illustrates the stakes for one person; it should not be treated as a statistic about all recordings or wearers.

Can someone secretly record you with smart glasses?
Discreet recording is a real concern: a camera integrated into eyewear may be less noticeable than a phone held up in front of someone. But that does not mean all smart glasses record continuously, or that every recording is hidden. Features vary by device, and a recording indicator may be present while still being difficult for a bystander to notice or interpret.

For Meta’s glasses, CBS News reported a test in which covering the capture light after recording had begun did not appear to stop capture. Meta told CBS that its safeguard is designed to prevent recording when the light is obstructed before recording starts. Those are different conditions: the company’s explanation does not establish that the safeguard stops a recording already underway. One journalistic test cannot establish behavior across every model, software version or circumstance.
The Guardian has also reported that indicators can be subtle, that people have modified devices to conceal them, and that Meta issued a software update intended to detect physical tampering. That reporting makes the durability and effectiveness of indicators an ongoing question; it does not establish that every device’s indicator can be defeated or that a safeguard always fails.

Why do the same design risks keep resurfacing?
- The camera is discreet by design. Eyewear is worn on the face and can look ordinary, so bystanders may not recognize it as a recording-capable device.
- An indicator is not the same as meaningful notice. A light only helps if people can see it, understand what it means and trust that recording stops when the indicator is obscured.
- Sharing can magnify the harm. A private interaction can become public content, potentially before the person filmed knows it exists.
- AI and platform features complicate consent. Capture, processing, storage and sharing are separate design choices. A clear account of each is more useful than a vague promise that a device is “private.”
- Rules and remedies may lag behind use. A device can spread before lawmakers, platforms and workplaces settle on effective ways to address recording and resulting harm.
As Dr Milica Stilinovic, a postdoctoral research associate with the University of Sydney’s Governing Immersive Tech team, put it: “Tech is running at breakneck speed and regulators, a pace behind, cannot regulate harms once they’ve already manifested in the wild.”
What would a more responsible smart-glasses design look like?
Comparing camera-equipped glasses with audio-only glasses shows that a camera is a product choice, not an unavoidable part of wearable technology. A useful evaluation asks what the device captures, how clearly it signals capture, what happens if the signal is obstructed, and how easily content can be processed or shared.

| Design question | Camera-equipped glasses | Camera-free audio glasses |
|---|---|---|
| Visual capture | Camera present; recording and indicator behavior depend on the device. | No camera, according to TechRadar’s report on Meta’s announced Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses. |
| Bystander signal | Depends on indicator visibility, clarity and safeguards. | No camera-recording indicator is needed for visual capture; the source does not establish other notice practices. |
| Other functions | Varies by model; capture, AI, storage and sharing should be assessed separately. | TechRadar reported audio, calls, translation and AI features for the announced product. |
| Availability and price | Varies by product and market; not established here. | Not stated in the cited announcement coverage. |
The comparison is about design choices, not a claim that audio-only devices are automatically harmless or that the announced product is currently available. Removing a camera does remove the particular risk of recording someone visually through that camera.
What can bystanders, platforms and lawmakers do?
For someone who thinks they are being recorded
- Ask the wearer whether recording is active and request that it stop if you do not consent.
- If you feel unsafe, move toward other people or staff and seek help rather than confronting someone alone.
- If footage appears online, keep a record of the post and report it to the platform using its relevant privacy or harassment process. Avoid resharing the footage, which can extend its reach.
These are practical steps, not a guarantee of removal or a statement of legal rights. Recording and consent laws differ by jurisdiction and context.
For manufacturers and platforms
Manufacturers can make recording states conspicuous, design safeguards that remain effective during recording, explain what the device captures and stores, and provide usable controls over processing and sharing. Platforms can respond to harassment and non-consensual exposure, but a removal policy is only one part of prevention. These are design and governance criteria, not independently tested scores for particular products.
For California policy
California SB 1130 proposed requiring covered wearable recording devices to include an indicator or similar feature beginning in 2028, and restricting the sale of technology designed to conceal recording indicators. Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed the bill in 2026, arguing that the definition of covered devices was too broad and pointing to existing protections for some recordings without consent in private spaces. The proposal is therefore not current California law. The Associated Press reports that consent rules differ across states; no single rule should be assumed to apply everywhere.
Why is this a repeat mistake rather than just a repeat product?
The recurring failure is not simply putting a camera in eyewear. It is treating the wearer’s convenience as the main design problem while leaving everyone in view to infer whether capture is happening, what happens to the footage and whether they can meaningfully object. Google Glass made that tension visible more than a decade ago. Current examples show why a tiny light and a later platform takedown are not substitutes for clear notice, dependable safeguards and choices that take bystanders seriously.
