Quick answer: A koala is a tree-dwelling marsupial with large furry ears, a prominent black nose and climbing claws. A wombat is a stocky, ground-dwelling marsupial that spends much of its life in a burrow. Koalas range patchily through eucalypt woodland and forest in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and south-eastern South Australia. Wombat habitat depends on the species: bare-nosed wombats use wetter, partly forested areas in New South Wales, while southern hairy-nosed wombats occupy drier, open country.
Wombat and koala at a glance
Koalas and wombats are related Australian marsupials, but their bodies and daily routines point in opposite directions. Koalas are adapted to climbing and feeding in trees. Wombats are adapted to digging, sheltering in burrows and moving across the ground. The fastest reliable identification comes from looking at where the animal is positioned, then checking its face, ears, claws and body shape.

| Feature | Koala | Wombat |
|---|---|---|
| Typical location | Usually in eucalypt trees; may travel on the ground | On the ground and in a burrow |
| Body plan | Compact climber with long, sharp claws and no tail | Stocky, powerful digging body |
| Face | Large furry ears and a prominent black nose | Does not have the koala’s conspicuous furry ears and large black nose combination |
| Main food described by the official profiles | Leaves of selected eucalypts, plus some related tree material | A single Australia-wide diet description is not established by the profiles used here; diet should be discussed by species |
| Habitat | Eucalypt woodland and forest | Species-dependent; both NSW species described here use burrows |
| Australian diversity | One koala species with regional populations | Three wombat species; two occur in New South Wales |
The NSW Government’s koala profile identifies the wombat as the koala’s closest relative. That close relationship does not make them look or live alike: their limbs, body shape and habitat use reflect climbing versus burrowing.
How to identify a koala
Look for the tree first
Most koalas spend their time in eucalypt trees, sleeping and feeding among the branches. A koala on the ground is possible, but a tree is the strongest first clue. The NSW profile and the Queensland Government’s koala facts page both describe koala habitat in terms of eucalypt woodland or forest and the availability of suitable food trees.

Check the ears, nose and claws
- Large furry ears: The ears stand out from the head and have a visibly furry outline.
- Prominent black nose: The nose is broad and dark, unlike the small, less conspicuous nose you might expect on many ground mammals.
- Long, sharp claws: The claws are climbing equipment, helping the animal grip trunks and branches.
- No tail: Koalas do not have an external tail.
These features work together. An animal with furry ears, a large black nose and strong climbing claws is readily distinguishable from a wombat, even when you cannot see the whole body.
Understand the body size range
The Australian Government’s 2023 koala profile gives a weight range of 4 to 15 kilograms. That is the profile’s range, not a universal average: regional populations vary in size. Weight alone is therefore a poor field test, especially when an animal is viewed from a distance or is partly hidden in foliage.
How to identify a wombat
Use the ground-and-burrow clue
Wombats are burrow dwellers. Their powerful digging lifestyle is the clearest practical contrast with the koala’s tree life. If you see a stout animal entering or leaving a tunnel, moving through low ground cover, or associated with burrow entrances, wombat is the more likely identification.

Expect a stocky digging build
A wombat’s silhouette is broad, low and heavily built for life on the ground. Do not try to identify every wombat species from one coat color or a single body description. The three species are not interchangeable, and the official material used here does not provide one coat pattern that safely covers all of them.

Use the rear as a secondary clue
Queensland’s wildlife information explains that a koala uses its hard bottom to wedge comfortably in a tree fork, while a wombat uses its hard bottom as a defence. This is a useful memory aid, not a claim that either animal has only one function for that body part. The explanation appears on the Queensland Government koala facts page.
Where koalas live
The broad mainland range
Koalas occur from south-eastern South Australia through Victoria and New South Wales to Queensland. Their distribution is patchy rather than one continuous belt. The federal 2023 profile and the Victorian Government’s koala information both describe a broad eastern and southern mainland presence with regional differences.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“Patchy” matters when interpreting a map. A state may contain koala habitat without koalas occupying every suitable-looking forest. Local populations depend on the presence of food trees, connected habitat and conditions that allow animals to move between usable areas. A general statement such as “koalas live all along Australia’s east coast” is too broad.
Eucalypt food trees define usable habitat
Koalas mainly eat leaves from selected eucalypt species. Official profiles also mention leaves or other material from some related trees, including flowers and stems. Because they cannot use every tree equally, the presence of eucalypt woodland or forest does not automatically mean that every stand provides the same food value. The Queensland source, NSW source and Victorian source all connect koala habitat with suitable food trees.
How much a koala eats
The Queensland Government gives an approximate intake of around 500 grams of leaves per day. It is an approximate figure from that government page, not a fixed requirement for every koala and not a direct comparison with a wombat’s daily intake. Body size, leaf type and local conditions can affect what an individual consumes.

Conservation status needs a geographic qualifier
The federal 2023 profile says the combined Queensland, New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory koala populations are endangered under national law. That wording applies to the listed combined populations; it should not be expanded into a claim that every koala population in every state has exactly the same legal status. Conservation listings can be geographically defined and may change, so a current state or territory decision should be checked when legal status is important.
Where wombats live
There are three species, not one uniform range
Australia has three wombat species. Two occur in New South Wales, while the northern hairy-nosed wombat is a separate species with its own distribution and conservation story. The NSW information is detailed for the species found in that state; it is not a complete map of every wombat population in Australia.
| Wombat group described in the NSW material | Habitat pattern | What can safely be concluded |
|---|---|---|
| Bare-nosed wombat | Wetter, partly forested coastal and range areas, as well as western slopes | Its NSW habitat is not limited to one landscape type; both wetter forested country and western-slope areas are represented |
| Southern hairy-nosed wombat | Dry, open country | It is associated with a drier, more open environment than the NSW description for bare-nosed wombats |
| Northern hairy-nosed wombat | Not specified in the NSW habitat summary used here | Do not assign either of the two NSW descriptions to this species without a source specific to it |
All wombats use burrows, but “burrowing mammal” still does not tell you where every wombat lives. Species, rainfall, vegetation and region matter. A statement that wombats live only in forests, or only in deserts, would erase the documented differences between the bare-nosed and southern hairy-nosed wombats.
What koalas and wombats eat
Koala diet
Koalas mainly eat leaves from selected eucalypt species. Official accounts also include some related tree species, flowers and stems. This is a specialized, relatively narrow food strategy, which is why food-tree availability is central to defining koala habitat. The federal profile at dcceew.gov.au and state profiles from Queensland and Victoria describe the link between koala feeding and particular trees.
The approximately 500-gram daily leaf figure from Queensland is useful for scale, but it should remain attached to its source and qualification. It does not establish a universal daily amount, and it cannot be used to rank koalas against wombats because the reviewed profiles do not supply a matching, species-wide wombat intake figure.

Wombat diet: avoid a false single answer
The official profiles used for this comparison do not provide a robust, directly comparable diet account for every wombat species. That is why a careful explanation should identify the wombat species before making a detailed feeding claim. It is safer to say that wombat food varies by species and locality than to present one unqualified menu as if it applied equally to all three Australian species.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How their relationship explains the similarities
Both are marsupials
Koalas and wombats are close marsupial relatives. Both have rear-opening pouches, a feature that can surprise people who assume a koala’s tree life requires a different reproductive arrangement. The NSW Government states: “The closest relative of the koala is the wombat.” Read the full explanation in its koala profile.
Koala pouch muscles suit a climbing life
Koalas have muscles around the pouch opening that help keep young from falling out while the mother is in trees. That detail links anatomy to habitat: the pouch is not merely a shared marsupial feature, but one adapted to the physical demands of climbing. Wombats also have rear-opening pouches, yet their burrowing lifestyle creates a different set of practical demands.
Hard bottoms have different highlighted roles
The Queensland Government’s explanation gives koalas a comfortable wedge in a tree fork and describes the wombat’s hard bottom as a defence. These roles help explain why two related animals can share a memorable anatomical feature while using it in different environments. They are government-described functions, not an exhaustive list of everything the structure does.
A step-by-step field identification checklist
Use this sequence when a photograph, video or distant sighting leaves you unsure.
Best Value
- Locate the animal. In a eucalypt tree, start with koala. On open ground or at a burrow entrance, start with wombat.
- Check the ears. Large, visibly furry ears support koala identification.
- Check the nose. A prominent black nose is a strong koala clue.
- Check the limbs and posture. Long, sharp claws and a climbing grip support koala; a low, stocky digging build supports wombat.
- Look for a tail. Koalas have no tail. Do not use tail appearance alone to assign a wombat species.
- Consider the habitat map. A koala sighting should fit eucalypt woodland or forest within its patchy Queensland-to-south-eastern-South-Australia range. A wombat sighting should be interpreted through species and region.
- Do not over-identify. If you can tell “wombat” but not which species, stop at that level unless location and reliable species-specific features justify more.
Common mistakes when comparing them
Calling a koala a bear
“Koala bear” is misleading. Koalas are marsupials, not bears, and their closest relative is the wombat according to the NSW Government. Use “koala” rather than a bear label.
Assuming every wombat lives in the same habitat
The three wombat species do not share one simplified range description. Bare-nosed wombats in the NSW account are linked with wetter, partly forested areas and western slopes; southern hairy-nosed wombats are linked with dry, open country. Those statements should not be presented as a complete national map.
Using weight as the main identification test
The 4-to-15-kilogram figure belongs to the Australian Government’s 2023 koala profile and includes regional variation. A weight estimate from a photograph is unreliable, and no matching wombat figure in the reviewed sources makes a weight-only comparison meaningful.
Treating all eucalyptus forest as equally good koala habitat
Koalas select particular food trees. Forest cover alone does not establish that a site offers the same feeding opportunities as another forest. Habitat quality depends on which trees are present and how the local patch is connected.
Turning one memorable anatomical feature into a complete explanation
The hard-bottom distinction is useful, but the Queensland source presents it as an explanation of important functions, not as the sole purpose of the structure. Likewise, claws identify a climbing adaptation but do not replace checking the animal’s overall setting and appearance.
The clearest mental picture
Imagine two related marsupials solving different physical problems. The koala’s world is a patchwork of suitable eucalypt trees. Its furry ears, large black nose, clawed grip and tailless body make sense for resting and feeding above the ground. The wombat’s world is built around soil, shelter and tunnels. Its stocky body and digging life make a burrow more informative than a tree canopy when you are deciding what you saw.
That contrast also explains why range descriptions must be handled differently. A koala range can be summarized across eastern and southern mainland Australia, provided its patchiness and dependence on food trees are retained. A wombat range has to be broken down by species, because “wombat” covers three animals with different habitat associations. Once you combine location, body shape and the key facial features, the identification is usually straightforward without relying on a single coat color, weight estimate or simplified map.
