First determine whether the main page, a redirect target, or a linked HTTPS resource failed; then test that exact host’s TLS connection and access path. The right fix depends on which layer is failing—there is no universal SSL flag that makes every HTTPS page work.
Start by identifying the failed request
Before changing options or switching to HTTP, capture the complete standard-error output and record the converter build and environment. wkhtmltopdf can report an SSL warning while the actual failure is a redirect, a denied request, or a stylesheet or image that never loaded.
- Run
wkhtmltopdf --versionand note the operating system, package source, and whether the binary uses patched Qt. Identical version labels do not guarantee identical builds. - Save the full command and stderr, not just the line containing “SSL error.”
- Record the exact URL supplied to wkhtmltopdf and identify the URL named in the error, if any.
- Establish whether the failing request is the document itself, a redirect destination, or a dependency such as CSS, an image, a font, a script, or an iframe.
A browser opening the page successfully does not prove that the wkhtmltopdf build can fetch the main document and all of its resources. The historical issue #4462 describes a report on version 0.12.4 where HTTPS stylesheets and images failed while HTTP equivalents worked. That report is an example, not proof that HTTP is a safe workaround or that all such failures share a cause.
Test the host’s TLS handshake independently
Use the installed OpenSSL diagnostic client to inspect the connection to the host that actually failed. Replace example.com with that host’s name:

openssl s_client -connect example.com:443 -servername example.comThe -servername argument sends the hostname for servers that use SNI. Inspect the handshake output and certificate verification details. OpenSSL describes s_client as a tool for establishing and inspecting SSL/TLS connections; a failed handshake can have more than one cause, so the output is evidence to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself. If the document redirects, test the redirect destination as well as the original host. If the main page loads but styling or images are missing, test the exact resource host—not just the page’s host. Check DNS and network reachability, the server certificate chain, proxy settings, and any access controls that may treat the converter differently.
Match the fix to the failure
The server requires a client certificate
If the remote service requires mutual TLS, wkhtmltopdf documents --ssl-crt-path and --ssl-key-path for supplying a client certificate and private key. The certificate file may also contain intermediate CA and trusted certificates. The usage reference describes --ssl-crt-path as “Path to the ssl client cert public key in OpenSSL PEM format, optionally followed by intermediate ca and trusted certs”. Consult the wkhtmltopdf command-line usage reference for the exact options and syntax supported by your build.

These options are for client authentication. They are not documented as a general-purpose way to accept an invalid server certificate or make an older Qt WebKit build support a newer TLS configuration. Do not treat them as a generic SSL bypass.
A redirect, proxy, or access rule blocks the request
Follow the redirect chain and inspect the final URL, status, and access requirements. Check both environment proxy variables and any proxy configured explicitly for wkhtmltopdf; the usage reference documents proxy settings. A historical issue #4897 reports “Warning: SSL error ignored” followed by a 403 and ContentOperationNotPermittedError for wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 with patched Qt on Ubuntu Focal. That combination illustrates why the HTTP status and requested URL matter: an SSL warning does not establish that the handshake was the only problem.
A stylesheet, image, or other subresource fails
Check the exact resource URL for a redirect, certificate-chain issue, network restriction, or access-control response. Fix the resource endpoint or the environment that fetches it. Changing the document’s URL to HTTP may expose content in transit and is not a general-purpose repair; use it only if the resource is intentionally and safely available over HTTP.

The renderer cannot negotiate the endpoint’s TLS setup
If independent checks indicate an incompatibility between the remote server’s TLS behavior and the rendering binary, first determine whether you can safely update or replace the binary, or change the server configuration. Do not disable certificate verification as a routine fix. If those options are unsuitable, evaluate another renderer against the actual document and deployment environment.
Understand what load-error handling changes
wkhtmltopdf’s --load-error-handling option supports abort, ignore, and skip behavior. It determines how the converter proceeds after a page load fails; it does not repair a TLS handshake or make the failed connection valid. Ignoring an error can leave the PDF without expected content. Use a non-aborting mode only when partial output is acceptable and you have a way to detect and review missing content. Check the usage reference for the precise behavior of your build.

When to evaluate a different renderer
The wkhtmltopdf project’s status page points readers toward WeasyPrint or commercial Prince for controlled report generation, and Puppeteer or a wrapper for pages that require dynamic JavaScript. These are candidates to evaluate, not guaranteed HTTPS fixes: compare TLS behavior against the failing endpoints, JavaScript needs, output fidelity, deployment dependencies, maintenance, and licensing. No comparative test establishes that one alternative will fix every failure.

The same project status page warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat rendering untrusted markup as a security boundary: sanitize inputs and isolate the rendering process. The status page is old, so verify project maintenance and alternative-tool versions before choosing a replacement.

Does “Warning: SSL error ignored” mean the PDF is complete?
No. It reports an error condition, not whether every page resource loaded. Check the output and identify the request and HTTP status associated with the warning.
