Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhen one several-year-old Windows laptop started looking crowded, XDA Developers writer João Carrasqueira used WizTree to see which files were taking up the space. On his 512GB Huawei laptop, he found almost 200GB of virtual-machine and operating-system test material—including VM disks, Windows ISO images, WSL data, and duplicate archives. That is one writer’s result on a machine used for software testing, not a prediction for a typical PC.
What WizTree shows
WizTree analyzes disk usage and displays files and folders in a treemap. Larger rectangles represent larger files; the view also shows where those files sit in the folder structure. That makes it easier to move from “this drive is full” to specific space-consuming items and their locations.
To use it, select a drive and start a scan. Carrasqueira said the scan took seconds on his laptop, but that is his observation—not a benchmark or a guarantee for other drives. WizTree says it reads the Master File Table (MFT) directly when scanning NTFS drives, which the vendor identifies as the reason for its speed. See the WizTree official site for its feature and licensing details.
What the scan found on Carrasqueira’s laptop
In his October 2, 2026 account for XDA Developers, Carrasqueira described a several-year-old Huawei laptop with a 512GB drive used for software testing. He attributed almost 200GB to virtual-machine and operating-system test files, including VirtualBox and VMware VM files, several Windows ISO images, some Windows Subsystem for Linux data, and material present both as compressed archives and as extracted files. These were files accumulated for his work, not evidence that Windows PCs generally hide that much data.

He also attributed about 30GB to Windows and reported a 6.3GB hiberfil.sys file, despite believing hibernation was disabled. The figures describe that laptop and his account; they should not be treated as expected storage requirements for other computers. The underlying account is in XDA Developers.
Why Windows Storage settings are still useful
Windows has built-in storage settings and cleanup features. They are useful for a category-level overview and routine cleanup; a treemap answers a different question by making large individual files and their folder locations easier to spot. Start with Windows’ overview, then use a disk-usage analyzer if the categories do not explain where the space went.

Check a large hibernation file before removing anything
A large hiberfil.sys file is not necessarily an orphan. Microsoft documents that hibernation files support hybrid sleep, fast startup, and standard hibernation. As Microsoft puts it, “Fast startup is a type of shutdown that uses a hibernation file to speed up the subsequent boot.” The file’s presence alone does not establish why Carrasqueira’s file existed or whether a particular PC still needs it.
Microsoft lists default sizes of 40% of physical memory for a full hibernation file and 20% for a reduced file. To check the hibernation-file state on your own Windows installation, open a command prompt and run powercfg /a; Microsoft says the output reports whether the file is full, reduced, or not enabled. Consult Microsoft’s System power states documentation for the explanation and details.

WizTree and WinDirStat: what differs
| Analyzer | Cost and licensing | Documented scan or display approach |
|---|---|---|
| WizTree | Free for personal use. The vendor says commercial users can purchase a Supporter Code and large organizations should purchase an Enterprise license. WizTree official site | The vendor says it reads the MFT directly for NTFS scans. It displays disk usage in a treemap. WizTree official site |
| WinDirStat | Free and open source, according to the project site. WinDirStat official site | The project lists treemap and largest-file views. WinDirStat official site |

A disk map helps identify candidates, but size alone does not tell you whether a file is safe to remove. VM disks may hold active virtual machines; ISO images may be needed for installation or testing; WSL data may contain environments or files you still use; and an archive may be your only intact copy.
