Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons team and Studio X have announced plans to unionize with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), asking company leadership to voluntarily recognize their unions by October 13, 2026. Their October statement calls for “Protection against the encroachment of AI”; it does not use the stronger phrase “stop pushing generative AI.” That concern echoes an earlier MTG Arena organizing effort, which specifically sought guardrails for generative AI.
What the Wizards of the Coast union announcement says
The United Wizards of the Coast–CWA announcement says the D&D team and Studio X informed company leadership of their intent to unionize. The page is dated October 5, 2026, but its text says, “Today, October 6, 2026.” The union asks Wizards to voluntarily recognize the unions by October 13 and says workers plan to begin bargaining after recognition. The announcement lists several goals, with AI protection among broader workplace demands:
- Wages that reflect work and defined career progression
- Job security and accessible healthcare
- Sustainable workloads, including remote and hybrid work
- “Protection against the encroachment of AI”
- Ownership of work created outside the office
- Additional goals specific to each unit
These are the union’s stated demands, not agreed contract terms. The October statement does not spell out a specific AI policy or call for a complete ban on generative AI.

Why generative AI is part of the story
The AI language connects to an earlier organizing effort by MTG Arena workers. In April 2026, the Arena team’s campaign called for generative AI guardrails alongside protections related to layoffs and remote work, limits on mandatory crunch, and greater transparency and equity. That is the earlier Arena unit’s stated position; it should not be conflated with the exact wording of the October D&D and Studio X announcement. CWA, April 27, 2026
United Wizards of the Coast describes D&D and Studio X as forming their own unions and planning to collaborate and align their efforts. The teams are therefore not necessarily one bargaining unit. Has Wizards of the Coast responded?
A Wizards statement reported by Rascal News addressed the earlier MTG Arena filing, not the October D&D and Studio X announcement. The outlet reported the company saying it had received the filing and was reviewing it, adding that employees are “the lifeblood of what makes us great” and that it would respond through the appropriate process.
