Wizards of the Coast has declined to voluntarily recognize union units representing its Dungeons & Dragons/D&D Beyond and Studio X workers. The decision does not end organizing: the representation question will proceed to a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) secret-ballot election.
It is the second Wizards organizing effort in 2026 to take the election route. The Magic: The Gathering Arena unit reportedly won its vote with 83% support.

What happened
Workers on the Dungeons & Dragons and D&D Beyond teams, together with employees in Studio X, announced on October 6, 2026, that they intended to join United Wizards of the Coast-CWA (UWOTC-CWA). The union set October 13 as the deadline for voluntary recognition.

UWOTC summarized the communication this way: “Yesterday, Wizards informed us that it doesn’t intend to voluntarily recognize the D&D or Studio X units of our union ahead of a vote.”
Why the decision sends the matter to a vote
Voluntary recognition would have allowed Wizards to acknowledge the union without first holding a representation election. Because the company declined that option, eligible employees will decide the question through an NLRB election conducted by secret ballot.

Wizards’ position, as quoted by Wargamer, is that “it is the right of every eligible employee to decide whether union representation is right for them.” That statement explains the company’s stated preference for an employee vote, but the reports do not provide a detailed campaign plan or other explanation of how Wizards intends to argue its case.
Which employees are organizing?
Dungeons & Dragons and D&D Beyond
One proposed unit covers people working on Dungeons & Dragons and its D&D Beyond digital platform. The announcement treats those workers as a single organizing unit rather than as separate D&D and platform votes.

Studio X
Studio X is described as the group encompassing most creative staff working on tabletop Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters. Its inclusion means the effort extends beyond D&D into tabletop game design and related creative work. The available reports do not establish how many eligible employees are in Studio X or precisely which roles are included.
Is this the same union as the Magic: The Gathering Arena effort?
Yes. UWOTC-CWA formed in June 2026 from the Magic: The Gathering Arena development team and is affiliated with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The D&D and Studio X campaigns are new units within that union structure, not a separate organization.

What UWOTC-CWA is asking for
Organizers have published a platform focused on workplace conditions and control over employment changes. Its stated priorities include:
- Compensation and advancement: fair wages, transparent career progression and greater job security during continued instability in the game industry.
- Work location and workload: protections for remote work, sustainable workloads, opposition to crunch and resistance to forced return-to-office policies.
- Healthcare: reliable, accessible coverage with deductibles and co-pays employees can manage.
- Artificial-intelligence rules: an enforceable policy governing leadership’s use of large language models and other generative-AI systems.
- Outside-work intellectual property: full ownership of unrelated intellectual property employees create on their own time.
What happens next
- The proposed D&D/D&D Beyond and Studio X units proceed through the NLRB election process rather than receiving recognition directly from Wizards.
- Eligible workers will vote by secret ballot on whether to be represented by UWOTC-CWA.
- The NLRB process must establish the eligible electorate and election arrangements. The reports available as of October 16 do not give a case number, a unit-size figure or an election date.
- The result will determine whether each proposed unit gains representation. The reported 83% Arena result is a precedent for UWOTC-CWA, not a forecast of how either new unit will vote.
What remains unknown
No published report sets out the number of eligible employees in either new unit, the NLRB case number, the date of either election or Wizards’ detailed campaign strategy. Those details should be treated as unresolved until the NLRB, the company or the union issues a formal update.
