Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →PC Gamer’s Andy Chalk contacted Jack Thompson, the long-time critic of violent video games, to ask about Florida’s promotional partnerships tied to Grand Theft Auto 6. By Chalk’s account, the exchange went badly: Thompson called the arrangement fascist, accused Chalk of dishonesty, and told him to stop contacting him. The details below come from Chalk’s feature and are reported as he presents them.
What the outreach was about
Chalk’s question concerned Florida’s embrace of GTA 6 marketing and promotional partnerships. Thompson’s objection was not to the game itself but to what he saw as government lending its weight to a commercial product. That distinction matters for reading the replies, because the sheriff’s department and Thompson were answering different questions.

Thompson’s replies, in the order they arrived
The feature reproduces the following exchange. These are Thompson’s words as quoted by Chalk.

- The opening reply. Thompson wrote: “If you don’t understand that government promotion of commercial interests is fascism then we have very little to talk about.”
- The redirect. He told Chalk to “Ask the County Sheriff what she thinks about this unholy corporatist alliance.”
- The sheriff’s answer. Chalk relayed the department’s response that it was not concerned by “promotional decisions [made] by private businesses or organizations.”
- The escalation. Thompson accused Chalk of drinking the “fascist Kool-Aid,” likened him to Joseph Goebbels, and told him to stop contacting him.
- The follow-up email. Thompson wrote: “The problem is your work proves you are not an honest journalist.”
Why the sheriff’s answer did not end the argument
The sheriff’s department said it had no objection to promotions run by private businesses or organizations. Thompson’s complaint was about public bodies taking part in promotion at all. Read side by side, the two positions do not contradict each other: one addresses whether private marketing is a concern for the department, the other whether government promotion of commercial interests is acceptable. The feature does not show Thompson moving toward the department’s view, and the exchange as reported reads as entrenched on both sides.

The Hot Coffee history the feature leans on
The feature uses the 2005 Hot Coffee controversy as background for why GTA has long drawn public alarm. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a player-made modification activated abandoned game code that unlocked a sexual mini-game. According to the feature, the game was re-rated Adults Only that year, and the Federal Trade Commission criticized Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive for not telling consumers that the discs contained potentially viewable nude characters and a potentially playable mini-game.
These points are the feature’s account. Check the FTC’s public statements and the ESRB’s rating records for the exact wording and dates before repeating them as settled fact.

Thompson’s place in the early debate
The feature describes Thompson as a prominent critic of violent games in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It notes that Bill Paxton played him in the BBC Two docudrama The Gamechangers. That portrayal is context for his public profile; it does not bear on the claims made in the exchange.

Mainstream reach versus the crime argument
The feature’s central argument is that GTA has become a mass-market franchise and that the catastrophe Thompson predicted did not follow. That is the author’s interpretation. The piece offers no crime statistics and no causal analysis, so it cannot show that games did or did not affect violent crime. The ESA figure describes who plays games, not what games do, and it does not settle the question either way.

What the exchange does establish is narrower: Thompson’s objections to government promotion were reported directly from his own emails, and the sheriff’s department’s position was reported second-hand by Chalk.
