With GPU Prices Climbing, a 1080p High-Refresh Monitor Is the Budget Gaming Sweet Spot

Yes—if your priority is smooth, high-frame-rate gaming, a 24-inch 1080p monitor running at 144Hz to 165Hz is currently the most defensible value choice. Full HD (1,920×1,080) gives a graphics card far fewer pixels to render than 2,560×1,440, making high frame rates attainable on less expensive hardware. You give up some desktop sharpness, but competitive players usually gain more from consistent motion and low latency than from extra pixels.

Why 1080p makes sense while graphics cards cost more

Every frame at 1080p contains about 2.07 million pixels. A 1440p frame contains about 3.69 million, so the GPU must process roughly 78% more pixels before accounting for game settings, ray tracing or upscaling. That workload difference is why a modest card can deliver very high frame rates at Full HD while the same card may struggle to feed a 1440p panel.

Geared Gaming’s guide, updated July 30, 2026, describes 1080p as the resolution to buy “when frame rate matters more than pixel count.” That trade-off is especially relevant in esports and other fast games, where a steadier frame stream and lower input latency matter more than fine texture detail.

Match the monitor’s refresh rate to your real FPS

A 165Hz display can show a new frame every 6.06 milliseconds, but it cannot create frames your GPU does not render. If a game runs at 70 FPS, a 165Hz monitor still improves responsiveness compared with a 60Hz screen, yet much of its potential remains unused. PC Gamer makes the same qualification for the BenQ Mobiuz EX240: 165Hz is useful “providing you have the GPU to drive it.”

  • 144–165Hz: the value band for most budget gaming PCs. It is attainable in many competitive titles without buying a high-end GPU.
  • 240Hz or more: worth considering only when your system can sustain very high frame rates and you play games where each millisecond matters.
  • Adaptive Sync: look for AMD FreeSync, compatible variable-refresh support or an equivalent feature to reduce tearing when frame rate moves below the panel’s maximum refresh.

Choose 24 inches for the cleanest 1080p image

At 24 inches, 1080p provides a practical pixel density for gaming and everyday desktop work. A 27-inch 1080p display spreads the same 1,920×1,080 pixels over a larger area, so text and fine edges can look grainier. Choose 27 inches only if the larger physical image matters more to you than sharpness, or if you sit farther away.

What you give up versus 1440p

1440p remains the clearer image-quality choice. Higher pixel density makes text, interface elements and distant game objects sharper, and a 27-inch 1440p monitor is a popular all-purpose size. The cost is GPU headroom: rendering more pixels can force lower settings, upscaling or a faster graphics card to maintain the same frame rate. For a mixed workload of productivity, image work and slower single-player games, that clarity may justify the premium. For competitive play on a constrained budget, it often does not.

GPU performance and price context

Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 graphics-card table reports the following 1080p results and median street prices. The prices reflect the publication’s research into in-stock products, not manufacturer MSRP, and should be treated as dated examples rather than permanent market prices.

GPU Tom’s Hardware 1080p result Median street price (October 2026)
GeForce RTX 5050 49.5 FPS $309
GeForce RTX 5060 64.0 FPS $369
Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB 70.9 FPS $464

These are aggregate figures, not a guarantee for a particular game, preset or competitive setting. Esports titles set to performance-oriented options can run far above such averages; demanding new releases, ray tracing and ultra presets can run well below them. Check benchmarks for the games you actually play before paying extra for 240Hz.

Monitors that illustrate the value tier

BenQ Mobiuz EX240

PC Gamer’s January 16, 2026 monitor guide names the EX240 its best budget high-refresh gaming monitor. It is a 24-inch, 1,920×1,080 display rated at 165Hz with a stated 1ms response time and Adaptive Sync. The guide notes that reducing resolution can minimize graphics-card load, which helps a budget system reach the panel’s refresh rate. Response-time figures are manufacturer or review specifications, so actual motion clarity depends on the selected overdrive mode and game frame rate.

ViewSonic VX2428

Use these checks before buying

  1. Estimate sustained FPS: use benchmarks for your CPU, GPU and favorite games at the settings you intend to play.
  2. Pick the refresh target: choose 144–165Hz when your typical frame rate is around or above that range; reserve 240Hz for consistently much higher FPS.
  3. Set the size: select 24 inches for the sharpest 1080p desktop image; move to 27 inches only for a larger viewing area.
  4. Confirm variable refresh: check that Adaptive Sync works over your intended DisplayPort or HDMI connection and with your graphics-card driver.
  5. Inspect the less glamorous specifications: verify stand height and tilt adjustment, available ports, panel technology, warranty terms and return policy.
  6. Keep HDR expectations realistic: inexpensive high-refresh 1080p monitors may accept an HDR signal without delivering the brightness or local dimming needed for convincing HDR.

When paying for 1440p is the better decision

  • You use the monitor for dense text, spreadsheets or creative work where sharper type is valuable.
  • Your graphics card can sustain your target frame rate at 1440p without relying on settings you dislike.
  • You play mostly slower single-player games and prefer image detail to maximum refresh.
  • You want a 27-inch screen but find 1080p pixel structure distracting at your normal seating distance.

For a competitive-focused system with an expensive or midrange GPU, however, the 24-inch 1080p 144–165Hz combination leaves more budget for the graphics card itself and makes high refresh easier to use every day.
