Choose wired if your keyboard will stay at one desk and you want the simplest setup with no battery to monitor. Choose wireless if a clean desk, multiple computers or tablets, and easy repositioning matter more than charging and receiver management. A tri-mode model can cover both situations by offering USB, 2.4 GHz radio and Bluetooth, but it still combines the upkeep of a wireless keyboard with the decision-making of three connection modes.
The right purchase is not determined by the word “wireless” or by a single polling-rate number. Check the exact connection modes, host-device compatibility, layout, switch feel, hot-swap support, charging behavior, battery conditions and receiver requirements for the model you are considering.

Wired or wireless? Start with where the keyboard will live
The most useful first question is whether the keyboard will remain connected to one computer. A wired mechanical keyboard is usually the better fit for a permanent desk: plug in the USB cable, select your layout and switches, and there is no keyboard battery or radio receiver to maintain. The cable can be routed behind a monitor or through a desk grommet, but it remains part of the setup.

It removes the data cable from the desk surface and can let one keyboard serve several devices. The trade-off is operational: you must charge the keyboard or replace its batteries when applicable, keep track of a USB receiver for 2.4 GHz operation, and understand how that particular model changes between Bluetooth, radio and USB modes.

Some keyboards support all three connections. That does not make every tri-mode board identical. One model may use a physical switch, another a function-key shortcut, and another software; the number of remembered devices and the available operating systems also vary. Treat each model’s specification sheet as the authority.
What “wireless” means: Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz and USB
| Connection | How it works | Best use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB wired | A cable carries power and keystrokes directly to the host. | A fixed desk, competitive play, or anyone who does not want battery upkeep. | Connector type, cable length, available USB port and whether the keyboard can be used while charging. |
| Bluetooth | The keyboard pairs directly with a Bluetooth-capable host; no keyboard-specific USB receiver is required. | Laptops, tablets and devices where USB ports are scarce. | Bluetooth support on the host, pairing procedure, number of stored devices and the keyboard’s Bluetooth implementation. |
| 2.4 GHz | A dedicated USB receiver creates a keyboard-to-dongle radio link. | Desktops or gaming systems with an available USB port and a receiver-focused setup. | Receiver included, adapter or extension needs, storage location, and whether the keyboard supports the desired operating system through that receiver. |
| Tri-mode | USB, Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz are available in one keyboard. | People who alternate between a stationary computer and mobile devices. | How modes are selected, how many devices can be remembered, battery behavior in each mode and charging while connected. |
Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz are not interchangeable labels. They use different pairing and host requirements, and their behavior depends on the keyboard’s firmware, receiver and power settings. A computer can have Bluetooth but no convenient USB-A port for a receiver; a desktop can have several USB ports but no Bluetooth. Confirm the actual ports and wireless support on every device you plan to use.
Performance: polling rates are specifications, not guarantees
Manufacturers often publish polling or report rates. A 1,000 Hz rate indicates that the keyboard can report its state at that configured interval in the named mode; it does not by itself establish a measured end-to-end latency or prove that a person will notice a difference. Firmware, the receiver, the operating system, the game and the rest of the input path all affect the experience.

| Keychron K2 HE | 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.2 and Type-C wired; 1,000 Hz polling in wired and 2.4 GHz modes. | Those rates apply to the specified modes for this model. The page also lists macOS, Windows and Linux compatibility. |
| CORSAIR K65 PLUS Wireless | 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and USB wired; a 1,000 Hz report rate. | The figure is a manufacturer specification. It should be compared with another keyboard only when the mode and test conditions are equivalent. |
| ASUS ROG Falcata | Wired USB and SpeedNova wireless modes up to 8,000 Hz; Bluetooth is also listed. | The 8,000 Hz figure is a vendor specification for wired and SpeedNova modes, not evidence that typical users need that rate. |
For a gaming comparison, place the exact model and connection mode beside every latency or polling claim. Do not convert one board’s 8,000 Hz wired-or-radio specification into a claim that all wireless keyboards are as fast, or that a higher rate guarantees a better game. For office work, programming and general use, layout, switch feel, key stability and reliable device switching are usually more consequential buying criteria than the maximum number on the box.

Battery life and charging: read the conditions beside the number
Wireless battery figures are conditional. Lighting brightness, RGB animations, connection mode, sleep timers, polling settings and firmware behavior can all change runtime. A battery claim with LEDs disabled should not be compared directly with a claim measured with lighting enabled or in a different radio mode.
| Model | Published battery information | Condition attached to the figure |
|---|---|---|
| CORSAIR K65 PLUS Wireless | Up to 266 hours. | CORSAIR states this is with 2.4 GHz and RGB off on its product page, accessed October 13, 2026. It is a vendor claim, not an independent test. |
| ASUS ROG Falcata | Up to 200 hours. | ASUS specifies SpeedNova normal mode with RGB off on its product page, accessed October 13, 2026. This is a model- and setting-specific claim. |
| Keychron K2 HE | 4,000 mAh rechargeable battery. | The cited specification gives capacity; it does not establish a universal runtime under a particular lighting or polling setting. |
Before buying, find out whether the battery is rechargeable or replaceable, where the charging port is located, whether a standard USB cable can be used, and whether the keyboard remains operational while connected. CHERRY says its MX 3.0S Wireless can charge while you play. That feature reduces the inconvenience of a depleted battery, but it does not eliminate the need to keep a cable available.
When comparing two runtime claims, preserve the wording: “up to” describes a maximum under stated conditions, not a guaranteed number of hours for every owner. RGB-off figures are useful for planning a low-power setup, but a brightly lit desk may achieve less.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLayout, switches and repairability still matter more than the radio
Choose the layout before choosing the connection
Decide whether you need a number pad, dedicated navigation keys, function-row access or a compact footprint. Full-size boards occupy more horizontal desk space but keep the number pad and navigation cluster. Tenkeyless, 75%, 65% and smaller layouts free room for a mouse or fit a mobile workstation, but they may layer or omit keys. Wireless does not change those physical trade-offs.

- Tactile Quiet mechanical key switches with a satisfying tactile bump you feel - for precise feedback, reactive key reset, and less noise so your typing doesn't disturb those around you
- Low-profile keys, more comfort: A keyboard layout designed for effortless precision, with a full-size form factor and low-profile mechanical switches for better ergonomics
- Smart illumination: Backlit keys light up the moment your hands approach the cordless keyboard and automatically adjust to suit changing lighting conditions
- Faster workflow, more customization: Customize Fn keys, assign backlighting effects, enable Flow cross-computer, multi-device control, and more in the improved Logi Options+ (1)
- Multi-device, multi-OS: Pair MX Mechanical Bluetooth wireless keyboard with up to 3 devices on nearly any operating system via Bluetooth Low Energy or included Logi Bolt receiver(2)
The ASUS ROG Falcata is a 75% split design, while CHERRY lists the MX 3.0S Wireless as full-size. Those are concrete layout differences, not indicators that one connection type is superior. Measure the space between your monitor, mouse and desk edge before selecting a format.
Switch feel and keycap compatibility
Mechanical switches can be linear, tactile or clicky, with differences in force, sound and travel. Choose based on the typing and gaming feel you want, then verify that the product uses the switch type and keycap format you can live with. A wireless model with perfect connectivity is still a poor purchase if its layout or switch feel causes fatigue or unwanted noise.
Hot-swap support
Hot-swappable sockets allow compatible switches to be changed without soldering. They are useful if you expect to experiment or replace a failed switch, but they are not universal. CHERRY lists the MX 3.0S Wireless as having no hot-swap support. Check the specification for the exact board rather than assuming that a newer or more expensive wireless keyboard includes it.
Operating-system support
Key legends, modifier placement and configuration software can differ between Windows, macOS and Linux. The K2 HE product page lists compatibility with all three. That is a model-specific statement; confirm support for your own operating system, especially if you need remapping, lighting control or firmware updates. Also check whether the same features are available in Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz and wired modes.

Device switching and desk management
Wireless is most valuable when it solves a real movement problem. A keyboard that supports several Bluetooth profiles may let you move from a laptop to a tablet without unplugging anything, while a 2.4 GHz receiver can remain connected to a desktop. However, the switching method differs: some boards use a dedicated control, some use a shortcut, and some require software. Look for the number of remembered devices and the exact key combination or switch described in the manual.
- One permanent computer: wired is usually the least complicated arrangement.
- Desktop plus laptop: a tri-mode board can keep the desktop on its receiver and the laptop on Bluetooth, if the model supports both profiles.
- Tablet or phone use: Bluetooth avoids carrying a receiver, provided the mobile device supports the keyboard’s pairing mode.
- Several desktops: check whether each requires its own receiver and whether the keyboard can store or switch among those connections.
For a 2.4 GHz setup, keep the receiver with the keyboard or place it where it will not be lost. If the computer is under a desk, an extension or a front-facing port can make pairing and troubleshooting easier, but the required accessories depend on the keyboard’s receiver design.
Wired vs. wireless: practical trade-offs
| Decision area | Wired advantage | Wireless advantage | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desk appearance | Predictable cable routing and no radio hardware. | Less visible cabling and easier repositioning. | Will a permanent cable bother you more than charging? |
| Power | Normal USB use does not require keyboard battery maintenance. | Portable operation without a data cable. | Can you charge on your schedule, and can it work while charging? |
| Hosts | One direct USB connection is straightforward. | Bluetooth and/or a receiver can serve several devices. | Do all intended hosts support the chosen mode? |
| Performance comparison | Manufacturers may publish wired polling figures. | Figures vary by Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz and model. | Are you comparing the same mode and specification type? |
| Maintenance | Keep the cable and connector in good condition. | Charge, pair, update and avoid losing the receiver. | Which small tasks are acceptable in your routine? |
| Physical fit | Layout and switch choice remain the primary fit issues. | The same layout and switch issues apply, plus battery and receiver space. | Does the board meet your number-pad, size and hot-swap needs? |
How to choose a board: a step-by-step checklist
- List every host. Write down the desktop, laptop, tablet or other device you will use. Note which have Bluetooth and which have an available USB port for a receiver.
- Pick the physical format. Decide between full-size, tenkeyless, 75%, 65% or another layout based on number-pad needs, desk width and navigation-key habits.
- Choose the switch and sound profile. Select linear, tactile or clicky behavior and verify that the keycap and switch format suits your preferences.
- Decide whether hot-swap matters. If you want future switch changes, require explicit hot-swap support; do not infer it from price or wireless capability.
- Select the connection modes. Choose USB only, Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz or tri-mode according to the host list. For 2.4 GHz, confirm that a receiver is included and that your computer has a suitable port or adapter.
- Read mode-specific performance claims. Record the exact polling rate and mode. Treat it as a specification, not an independent latency result.
- Read battery conditions. Look for lighting state, radio mode, polling setting and whether the figure is an “up to” claim. Confirm charging behavior and battery type.
- Check the operating-system statement. Verify compatibility for each host and whether remapping, lighting and firmware tools work on your preferred system.
- Plan the physical setup. Measure desk space, decide where the receiver will live and make sure the charging cable can reach the keyboard without disrupting your mouse or monitor.
- Keep the manual accessible. Mode switching, Bluetooth pairing, reset procedures and firmware updates are model-specific; save the product page and manual before you need them.
Current tri-mode examples and what each illustrates
Keychron K2 HE
The K2 HE page lists 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.2 and Type-C wired connectivity, a 4,000 mAh rechargeable battery and 1,000 Hz polling in wired and 2.4 GHz modes. It also lists macOS, Windows and Linux compatibility. It is an example of a board that can cover a desktop receiver setup, Bluetooth mobility and cable operation, but the 1,000 Hz figure should not be assumed to apply to Bluetooth.
CORSAIR K65 PLUS Wireless
The K65 PLUS Wireless lists 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth and USB wired connections, a 1,000 Hz report rate and up to 266 hours with 2.4 GHz and RGB off. CORSAIR describes that runtime as “up to 266 hours between charges” under the stated condition. Use it as a planning figure for that configuration, not as a category-wide wireless standard.

CHERRY MX 3.0S Wireless
The MX 3.0S Wireless supports Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz through a USB dongle and USB-A-to-USB-C cable operation. CHERRY says it can charge while playing, lists a full-size layout and states that it does not have hot-swap support. Its description of Bluetooth Low Latency Mode is a vendor description for gaming; it is not independent validation of measured latency.
ASUS ROG Falcata
The ROG Falcata uses a 75% split design and offers wired USB, Bluetooth and SpeedNova wireless modes. ASUS states up to 8,000 Hz in wired and SpeedNova modes and up to 200 hours in SpeedNova normal mode with RGB off. These figures may appeal to a feature-focused gaming buyer, but they do not establish that 8,000 Hz is necessary for ordinary play or work.
Setup and troubleshooting after purchase
USB wired mode
- Connect the supplied cable to the keyboard and a suitable USB port on the host.
- Set the keyboard to its wired mode using the model’s switch or documented shortcut.
- Type in a text field before changing software or lighting settings. This confirms that the operating system sees the basic keyboard connection.
Bluetooth pairing
- Put the keyboard into the documented Bluetooth pairing mode.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices; on macOS, open System Settings > Bluetooth. Linux menus vary by desktop environment.
- Select the keyboard name and complete the on-screen pairing prompt.
- If it does not appear, remove an old entry, ensure the keyboard is not already connected to another host, and repeat pairing from the manual’s reset or profile procedure.
2.4 GHz receiver mode
- Insert the supplied receiver into a compatible USB port. Keep any receiver extension or adapter connected as specified by the manufacturer.
- Select 2.4 GHz mode on the keyboard and wait for the link to establish.
- If there is no input, test another USB port, confirm that the keyboard and receiver are paired to each other, and check for a firmware or pairing utility supplied for that exact model.
Low battery or interrupted charging
- Connect the charging cable and verify that the keyboard’s charge indicator behaves as described in the manual.
- Turn off or reduce RGB lighting and use the lower-power mode if you need more time away from a charger.
- If the keyboard supports use while charging, switch to USB mode temporarily; otherwise keep a backup wired keyboard available for a critical work session.
- Do not compare a short runtime with a published maximum until you have matched lighting, radio mode and other stated conditions.
Common buying mistakes
- Assuming wireless means Bluetooth. Some boards provide only a receiver, some only Bluetooth and some both.
- Ignoring the receiver. A 2.4 GHz keyboard normally needs its USB dongle; a computer without a suitable port may require an adapter.
- Comparing battery numbers without conditions. “Up to” hours with RGB off are not directly comparable with another mode or lighting setting.
- Using polling rate as a latency test. A report-rate specification is not an independent end-to-end measurement.
- Forgetting physical fit. A wireless board still needs the correct number pad, navigation keys, switch feel and desk footprint.
- Assuming tri-mode removes compromises. It adds flexibility, but also adds a battery, mode controls and more ways to configure the connection.
- Expecting every feature in every mode. Polling, lighting controls and software support can differ between USB, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth.
Bottom line: match the connection to your routine
Buy wired when the keyboard stays at one workstation and uninterrupted simplicity is your priority. Buy wireless when cable-free positioning or multi-device use solves a real problem, and choose Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz based on the ports and capabilities of your hosts. A tri-mode keyboard is the flexible middle ground for mixed setups, provided you accept charging and receiver management.
Make the final decision only after checking the exact model’s layout, switches, operating-system support, hot-swap status, mode-specific performance figures, battery conditions and charging behavior. Those details determine whether the keyboard fits your hands and devices; the wired-versus-wireless label is only the starting point.
