ENERGY STAR lists a 384-square-foot room estimate, but RTINGS measured only 93 CFM at a setting capped at 45 dBA, versus 247 CFM at maximum speed. That trade-off—and the maximum setting’s measured 64.7 dBA noise—is central to deciding whether the C710 fits your room and routine.
How well does the Winix C710 clean a room?
There are two useful ways to size the C710: its standardized product rating and independent measurements at different fan speeds. They answer different questions, so the room-area figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Source and condition | Cleaning figure | Room guidance |
|---|---|---|
| ENERGY STAR product record | 248 cfm smoke CADR; 252 cfm dust CADR; 262 cfm pollen CADR; 250 cfm PM2.5 CADR | 384 sq ft |
| RTINGS measurement, maximum fan, ionizer off | 247 CFM PM1.0 CADR | 386 sq ft recommended area |
| RTINGS measurement, fan setting capped at 45 dBA | 93 CFM | 145 sq ft recommended area |
ENERGY STAR’s room estimate is calculated from smoke CADR using a convention that assumes one air exchange per hour. It is a standardized estimate, not a promise of a particular result in every room: ceiling height, layout, pollutant, and desired cleaning rate can change what is appropriate. RTINGS’ lower quiet-speed room guidance makes the practical point clearer: if you plan to leave the purifier at a quieter setting, size the room against that setting’s airflow rather than the maximum-speed rating. ENERGY STAR’s C710 record and RTINGS’ September 22, 2026 review provide the respective figures.

How loud is the C710?
RTINGS measured 31.4 dBA at the lowest setting and 64.7 dBA at maximum. The first figure is suited to users who prioritize quiet operation, while the maximum setting is a substantial jump in noise in exchange for much faster cleaning. RTINGS describes low settings and Sleep mode as quiet for overnight use in a smaller room, but says the highest speed can be disruptive. These are that publication’s measurements, not a guarantee of sound in every room.

What filters does it use, and how often do they need replacing?
The official compatible replacement is Winix Filter Z, part number 1712-0121-00. Winix sells it as an all-in-one, one-year replacement set for the C710. The manufacturer says its replacement indicator illuminates when a filter needs attention and gives a general recommendation of about 12 months for True HEPA filters; actual life varies with air conditions and use. The fine-mesh pre-filter is washable and described as permanent with proper care.
Winix markets Filter Z as True HEPA and describes fine-mesh pre-filter, HEPA, and activated-carbon layers. ENERGY STAR’s product record categorizes the C710 as “HEPA-Type.” Its database note distinguishes that category from products described as HEPA or True HEPA, which it says have demonstrated meeting the HEPA standard. These labels come from different sources; ENERGY STAR’s listing does not certify the filter to a particular HEPA standard. Winix’s Filter Z product page identifies the replacement part, while its FAQ covers general maintenance guidance.

Vacuuming debris from the pre-filter is a reasonable upkeep step; RTINGS recommends doing so regularly but does not specify a C710 interval. Its reference to cleaning the similar C610 pre-filter every 14 days is based on the C610 manual, not a C710-specific instruction.
Does the C710 remove smoke, odors, and gases?
Its CADR figures support a strong particle-cleaning case, including smoke particles, but particle removal is not the same as eliminating smoke smell or gases. The C710 includes an activated-carbon layer intended to reduce odors. RTINGS describes that layer as a thin sheet, rather than the more substantial carbon media used in some purifiers, and says meaningful odor or VOC impact generally requires more carbon material. Treat the carbon as a modest odor-reduction stage, not a strong solution for persistent odors or gas removal.

What do Wi-Fi, sensors, and PlasmaWave add?
ENERGY STAR lists Wi-Fi connectivity and automatic operation driven by an air-quality sensor. Costco’s product listing describes a PM2.5 sensor and display, Auto mode, and Sleep mode. The listings establish that these features are specified; they do not establish app quality, connection reliability, or long-term software support.
RTINGS describes PlasmaWave as an ionizer-style feature that produces a small amount of ozone and says it can be switched off independently. Its particle measurements were taken with the ionizer off. ENERGY STAR’s record lists 1.0 ppb ozone emissions. These figures and descriptions do not establish a broad medical-safety conclusion; readers who prefer not to use the feature can turn it off as RTINGS describes.

How does the C710 compare with the Winix C610?
ENERGY STAR states that the C710 is identical in performance to the C610, with changes to the inlet and exhaust design and an updated control panel. RTINGS likewise characterizes the C710 as a redesigned C610 with nearly identical highest-speed CADR and a more compact design. That is useful context if choosing between the two, but it does not establish differences in current price, noise, bundle contents, or ownership experience.

What should you check before buying?
- Match room size to the cleaning rate you will actually use; the quiet-speed guidance is much smaller than the maximum-speed estimate.
- Consider whether maximum-speed noise is acceptable when you need faster cleaning.
- Confirm the replacement filter is Filter Z, part 1712-0121-00, and account for ongoing filter replacement.
- Do not buy it primarily for heavy odor or VOC control; the carbon layer is limited compared with more substantial carbon media.
- Verify current retailer stock and included filters. Costco’s listing described two all-in-one filters and “up to 2 years of filtration,” but the page showed the item unavailable when checked; that listing does not establish current availability or bundle details. Costco’s C710 listing is retailer-specific and may change.
