Windrose server performance depends first on meeting the game’s unusually demanding hardware baseline, then on fast storage, disciplined updates, and a configuration that matches your player load. The published minimum is a 64-bit Windows 10 PC with a Core i7-8700K or Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800, and 30 GB of storage. The recommended tier raises that to Windows 11 or later, a Core i7-10700 or Ryzen 7 5800X, 32 GB of RAM, an RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 6800 XT, and an SSD.
A dedicated server can keep a world available while its usual host is offline, but it also makes you responsible for version matching, backups, configuration files, logs, and network access. Use the sections below to size the machine, install the server, diagnose lag, and decide whether self-hosting or managed hosting is the better fit.

Windrose server hardware requirements
The figures below are the published game requirements, not a guaranteed dedicated-server benchmark. A server that runs a world for several players can need more headroom than a machine used only for solo play, especially when the same computer is also running the game, voice chat, backups, or other services.
| Component | Published minimum | Published recommended | What it means for a server |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit | Windows 11 or later | The official deployment guidance is Windows-oriented. Treat Linux or other environments as unsupported until current documentation confirms them. |
| CPU | Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X | Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | Prefer the recommended class when the machine will host several players or run other workloads. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 32 GB RAM | Leave capacity beyond the listed game requirement for the server process, operating system, saves, and monitoring tools. |
| GPU | Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6800 | Nvidia RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT | A headless server may not render a game window, but these are still the published game tiers. A shared machine should not be assumed to work below them. |
| Storage | 30 GB available; SSD recommended | 30 GB available; SSD required in the recommended tier | Reserve additional space for save files, logs, updates, and backups. |
The requirements page describes the 30 GB figure as available storage, not a complete operating allowance. A server installation that leaves only a few gigabytes free can fail during an update or backup even when the game itself fits. A practical setup gives the installation, R5Saved data, rotating backups, and temporary update files their own margin.

How much RAM should a dedicated server have?
Sixteen gigabytes is the listed minimum for Windrose, while 32 GB is the listed recommendation. For a dedicated machine, treat 16 GB as a floor rather than a target: Windows, the server process, save operations, and any control or backup utilities all compete for memory. The available documentation does not publish a universal player-to-RAM formula, so increase player count or world complexity gradually and watch memory use instead of relying on a promised number.
Does Windrose need an SSD?
Yes, an SSD is the sensible choice. The official requirements call an SSD “strongly recommended for the best experience” and require SSD storage in the recommended tier. Put both the game files and dedicated-server files on the SSD; placing saves or backups on a slow secondary disk can still create pauses during world loads and save operations. If you are buying capacity rather than a tested model, a generic 1TB NVMe SSD leaves room for the game, the server, snapshots, and other services. No particular brand, controller, endurance rating, or benchmark model is established here.
Why storage performance matters
Capacity is only one part of the storage decision. Reporting on observed Windrose gameplay described sustained read/write activity of roughly 15–30 MB/s. At a continuous 30 MB/s, that rate works out to about 108 GB written in an hour, but that is a calculation from an observed rate, not an official requirement or a guarantee for every build.
The same report described lower activity after patch 0.10.0.4: approximately 10–16 MB/s in its measurements, falling below 1 MB/s while the character was stationary. It characterized the change as a 60–75% improvement. Treat those figures as version- and scenario-specific observations. They are useful for explaining why an SSD helps, not for predicting the exact writes on your server.
Storage practices that prevent avoidable stalls
- Install Windrose and the dedicated server on an SSD with free space beyond the 30 GB game requirement.
- Keep
R5Savedon the same fast volume unless you have a tested reason to separate it. - Schedule backups so they do not all run during your group’s busiest play period.
- Watch free space and Windows disk activity; a nearly full SSD can slow updates and temporary-file operations.
- Use an SSD with adequate endurance if the machine will run continuously and write frequent saves. The available material does not establish a specific endurance rating.
What a Windrose dedicated server changes
A dedicated server keeps the world running when the person who normally hosts the game is offline. Friends can join through the game’s server-connection flow instead of waiting for that player to launch a session. The trade-off is operational: someone must install updates, keep the process running, protect the invite code or password, maintain backups, and troubleshoot failures.

The official guide documents two straightforward deployment routes: copy the server files, or install the free Steam Dedicated Server application. SteamCMD is also supported for headless, remote, and automated installations.
Simple Windows installation and first launch
- Prepare a Windows 10 64-bit or newer machine that meets the published hardware tier you intend to use. Create a dedicated folder for the server and confirm that the SSD has room for saves and backups.
- Install the dedicated-server files using the documented Steam application or by copying the server files into the chosen folder.
- For a first diagnostic run, launch
StartServerForeground.bat. The foreground window keeps startup and runtime logs visible, which makes crashes and connection errors easier to identify. - Wait for startup to complete and read the invite code in the console. The code is also recorded in
R5ServerDescription.json. - On a client, open the game’s Connect to Server flow and enter the invite code. Test with one player before distributing the code to the whole group.
Headless or automated installation with SteamCMD
For a remote machine or repeatable deployment, the official guide documents SteamCMD commands in this sequence:

Configure the server deliberately
Windrose separates server identity and world options into JSON files. The exact labels and available settings can change with updates, so keep a copy of the files that worked for your group before editing them.
| File | Controls documented in the guide | Operational advice |
|---|---|---|
R5ServerDescription.json |
Invite code, password protection, password, server name, and maximum player count | Change one item at a time, retain a backup, and restart the server after edits if the current build requires it. |
WorldDescription.json |
World name, preset difficulty, and individual world settings | Record the intended values so a migration or reinstall does not silently create a different world. |
Do not raise the maximum player count simply because the field permits it. There is no published universal tick-rate, CPU-utilization, latency, or maximum-player benchmark for a specified hardware configuration. Increase the load in small steps while watching CPU, memory, disk activity, and player reports.

Version, save, and backup discipline
Keep the client and dedicated-server versions aligned after every patch. The official guide warns that mismatches can cause bugs. When Windrose updates, use this order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Ask players to stop connecting and record the current server version.
- Copy the entire
R5Saveddirectory to a separate backup location. Keep more than one dated backup if the world is important. - Update the server files, then launch in the foreground and read the logs for migration or load errors.
- Update the clients and confirm that their version matches the server before testing the world.
- If the new build behaves badly, stop the process and restore the known-good save or installation only after preserving the new logs for diagnosis.
Backups should be restorable, not merely present. Periodically copy one to another disk or machine and verify that the files can be read. A backup on the same failing SSD is not meaningful protection.
How to reduce Windrose server lag
1. Establish a clean baseline
Start with the published minimums, a current server build, and a freshly restarted machine. Test with one or two players and note when the symptom appears: during world loading, while moving through a busy area, during saves, or only when several players join. This separates storage stalls from CPU, memory, or network problems.
2. Put active files on the SSD
Verify the installation path, save path, and temporary update location. If disk activity spikes during freezes, check whether Windows is also running antivirus scans, indexing, cloud synchronization, or a backup job. Reschedule nonessential jobs and keep free capacity available.
3. Control CPU and memory pressure
Close unrelated applications on a self-hosted machine. Watch CPU and memory while adding players or enabling more complex world settings. If memory approaches the machine’s limit, reduce concurrent services or move the server to a machine with more RAM; do not assume that lowering graphics settings on a remote client will fix server-side pressure.

4. Keep the world configuration realistic
Player count, world settings, and save activity can all change the workload. Change one setting at a time and record the result. Because no controlled benchmark establishes a universal safe player count, the reliable limit is the point at which your specific machine shows sustained CPU, memory, storage, or connection pressure.
5. Keep logs visible during diagnosis
Use StartServerForeground.bat while troubleshooting. Capture the time of a freeze or disconnect and compare it with the console output. Restarting through a background shortcut can hide the evidence you need to distinguish a crash, a version error, a failed save, or a network rejection.
6. Check the network path
Test a local client first, then a player outside the host’s network. Confirm that the invite code is current and that password-protection settings are known to everyone who needs access. If local connections work but remote players cannot join, investigate the host network, firewall, and router path rather than immediately replacing hardware.

Both approaches can provide an always-available world. The practical choice is whether you want control over the machine and files or prefer to pay a provider to handle much of the infrastructure.
| Decision factor | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Direct access to files, logs, JSON settings, operating system, and hardware. | Convenient control panel and provider-defined access; less direct machine access. |
| Maintenance | You handle patches, backups, restarts, hardware failures, and troubleshooting. | The provider usually handles much of the machine maintenance, while you still manage game settings and world data. |
| Availability | Can stay online when your normal host is away, provided the machine and connection remain available. | Designed for continuous availability in the provider’s region and service window. |
| Cost | Uses hardware, electricity, storage, and your time; there is no established universal total. | Requires a recurring fee. Current Windrose plan prices and availability vary and are not established here. |
| Compatibility | Matches the documented Windows-oriented deployment most directly. | Confirm the provider’s supported operating system, Windrose version, regions, backups, and update policy before paying. |
| Troubleshooting | You can inspect every log and file, but diagnosis is entirely your responsibility. | Support may handle infrastructure faults, but provider access can limit low-level investigation. |
Choose self-hosting when you already have a suitable Windows machine, want full control, and are comfortable maintaining backups and updates. Choose managed hosting when continuous availability and reduced administration matter more than direct access. Ask any provider specifically about current Windrose support, patch timing, save-backup retention, player limits, regions, and cancellation terms; availability can change between game versions.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Clients report a version or connection error
- Confirm the client and server build numbers after the latest patch.
- Stop the server, back up
R5Saved, update the server, and restart it in the foreground. - Generate a fresh invite code if the server description changed, then retry Connect to Server.
The server freezes during loading or saving
- Check whether the game and saves are on an SSD and whether free space is low.
- Compare the freeze time with disk activity and foreground logs.
- Pause simultaneous backups, synchronization, or scans and test again.
CPU usage is high while the world is idle
Early launch-week reports described high idle CPU usage, but those reports are version-sensitive and do not establish current behavior. Confirm the game build, run the current server files, and use foreground logs before changing hardware. If high usage persists, reduce player or world load and collect repeatable observations for support.
The server crashes after a configuration edit
- Restore the last known-good copies of
ServerDescription.jsonandWorldDescription.json. - Start with
StartServerForeground.batso the failing setting and error text remain visible. - Reapply changes one at a time, validating the JSON structure and restarting after each change.
A remote friend cannot join, but local testing works
Recheck the invite code, password, and server status first. Then test the host firewall and router path. A hardware upgrade will not correct a blocked or incorrectly routed connection.
What performance can—and cannot—be predicted
The published requirements and storage observations support a clear direction: use the recommended CPU and 32 GB of RAM when possible, install the game and server on an SSD, and leave room for saves and backups. They do not support a universal FPS figure, server tick rate, latency target, maximum-player count, or CPU percentage for a particular configuration. Windrose remains under active development, and its requirements, storage behavior, dedicated-server features, and hosting availability can change with patches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlan around measured behavior on your own world: begin with conservative player and world settings, monitor the machine while players join, and keep versioned backups. That approach gives you a reliable baseline without treating one reported workload as a promise for every server.
