Windows 10 and Windows 11 already provide virtual desktops through Task View, desktop renaming, separate backgrounds, and keyboard shortcuts. You do not need another program simply to create separate workspaces. The three open-source tools below become useful when you want a different management model: VirtuaWin for a classic, highly configurable desktop manager; Desk Switcheroo for taskbar-based visual control; and SylphyHornPlus for adding hotkeys and automation to Windows’ own desktops.
“Outdated” is a comparison hook, not an objective verdict. Windows’ built-in feature is adequate for many people. These projects address specific gaps such as richer window movement, pinning, desktop widgets, notifications, gestures, or deeper configuration.

What Windows already does without extra software
Microsoft’s built-in virtual desktops are available in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open Task View to create desktops, switch among them, rename them, and assign different backgrounds. Microsoft also documents keyboard shortcuts for creating and navigating desktops, so a basic separation between work, personal applications, and temporary tasks requires no installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Native desktops are therefore the sensible starting point. They are integrated with the operating system, receive Microsoft’s compatibility work, and avoid giving a third-party utility control over window behavior. The reason to install an open-source manager is not to unlock virtual desktops for the first time; it is to gain a particular workflow that Windows does not emphasize.

The feature descriptions in this table come from each project’s own site or repository. They describe the developers’ listed capabilities, not an independent benchmark or hands-on test.
VirtuaWin: the traditional, configurable choice
VirtuaWin is the best fit if you think of virtual desktops as a dedicated desktop-management system rather than an occasional Windows feature. The project describes it as configurable and extensible and advertises support for up to nine desktops. That capacity is the project’s own stated limit, not a comparative performance measurement.
What makes its approach different
Instead of centering the experience on Task View, VirtuaWin follows the classic virtual-desktop-manager model. You choose how many desktops to use and configure how switching and management work. This is attractive when your routine depends on several persistent spaces—for example, one for communications, one for development, one for research, and one for administration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIts extensibility also matters to users who want to tune behavior instead of accepting a fixed shell interface. The trade-off is that a traditional manager can feel less native than Windows’ own desktops. You are adding another layer that has to track application windows and taskbar state.
Compatibility caveats documented by the project
VirtuaWin’s FAQ acknowledges two edge cases. Some application windows may not hide correctly when switching desktops, and Windows taskbar behavior can occasionally show gaps during a switch. These are documented compatibility possibilities, not evidence that every application will fail. If a particular program behaves badly, the native Windows desktops may provide a cleaner result for that application.
Who should choose VirtuaWin
- Choose it when extensive configuration is more important than a shell-integrated appearance.
- Choose it when you want a classic manager and the possibility of using many persistent desktops.
- Test your essential applications early because window-hiding and taskbar behavior can vary by application.
VirtuaWin is released under the GNU General Public License. Obtain the current Windows build from the project’s official distribution channel, review its release notes, and confirm that the version still supports your Windows edition before deployment.

- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
Desk Switcheroo: a taskbar-first visual manager
Desk Switcheroo targets readers who want to see and operate desktops from the taskbar. Its repository describes a compact taskbar overlay for Windows 10 and 11. Rather than replacing Windows’ desktop system, it puts a small management surface where the taskbar is already visible.
Actions listed by the developer
- Rename desktops so their purpose is visible at a glance.
- Peek at a desktop before switching to it.
- Delete desktops that are no longer needed.
- Move windows between desktops.
- Adjust settings for the overlay’s behavior.
This combination is useful if Task View feels too large or too indirect for quick, repeated changes. A compact overlay can make desktop status easier to scan while leaving the underlying Windows implementation in place.
Strengths and limits of the taskbar model
The main strength is discoverability: the control remains near the taskbar instead of being hidden behind a full-screen overview. It is a practical choice for people who regularly rename, inspect, or remove desktops.
The project’s feature comparison is developer-authored. Treat the listed actions as the intended feature set and verify the current release behavior on your machine, particularly if you rely on a specialized taskbar configuration, multiple monitors, or strict window-management rules.
Who should choose Desk Switcheroo
- Choose it when your priority is a persistent, visual taskbar overview.
- Choose it when renaming, peeking, deleting, and moving windows are more important than advanced automation.
- Use it when you want to retain Windows’ native desktops but prefer a more direct control surface.
Desk Switcheroo identifies itself as MIT-licensed. Check the project repository for the current Windows 10 or 11 release and its installation instructions, since community software can change its packaging and compatibility over time.

SylphyHornPlus is the clearest choice for readers who like Windows’ built-in desktops but want more controls around them. The project positions itself as an enhancement layer for Windows 10 and 11 rather than a replacement desktop system.
Rank #3
- Instantly productive. Simpler, more intuitive UI and effortless navigation. New features like snap layouts help you manage multiple tasks with ease.
- Smarter collaboration. Have effective online meetings. Share content and mute/unmute right from the taskbar (1) Stay focused with intelligent noise cancelling and background blur.(2)
- Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
- Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.
Controls that extend the native experience
- Global hotkeys for desktop actions.
- Notifications when you switch desktops.
- Commands to move a window to an adjacent desktop or to a new desktop.
- Pinning a window so it appears on all desktops.
- Additional desktop-management controls.
- Mouse gestures for switching or related actions.
- Wallpaper controls tied to desktop use.
This feature mix addresses the most common reason people look beyond Windows: the native system creates desktops, but it does not expose every movement, pinning, notification, or gesture workflow in one focused utility.
Why it is the least disruptive option
Because SylphyHornPlus builds on Windows’ own desktop feature, it can be a better fit when compatibility and familiarity matter. You keep Task View and the operating system’s desktop model while adding shortcuts and feedback around it. The result is less of a conceptual switch than moving to a standalone manager.
Who should choose SylphyHornPlus
- Choose it when you want to keep Windows’ native desktops.
- Choose it when keyboard-driven movement, notifications, pinning, gestures, or wallpaper behavior are central to your workflow.
- Choose it when you want extra controls without adopting a separate desktop-management model.
SylphyHornPlus is MIT-licensed. Review the current repository release and Windows compatibility notes before installing, especially on machines where hotkeys are already claimed by other utilities.
How to decide among the three
Pick VirtuaWin for a classic manager
VirtuaWin is the strongest match for a reader who wants to configure a multi-desktop environment as a distinct layer. Its advertised support for up to nine desktops and extensible design favor long-lived, structured desktop layouts. The documented window and taskbar caveats mean you should validate important applications before making it the default for every task.
Pick Desk Switcheroo for visual taskbar control
Desk Switcheroo is the practical choice when the taskbar is your preferred control center. Its listed rename, peek, delete, and window-move actions focus on quick visual management rather than a large collection of automation features.
Pick SylphyHornPlus for an enhanced native workflow
SylphyHornPlus is the right starting point when Windows’ desktops already feel comfortable but lack the shortcuts and feedback you need. It adds global hotkeys, notifications, movement, pinning, gestures, and wallpaper controls without asking you to abandon the native desktop concept.

Stay with Windows if separation is all you need
If you only need separate spaces for a few groups of applications, Windows 10 or 11 already supplies the necessary functions. Installing an open-source utility adds another process, another update path, and another possible compatibility variable. The benefit should be a specific control you will actually use.

A safe installation and evaluation workflow
- Record your baseline. Create two or three desktops with Task View and note which applications you want to keep together. This gives you a reference point if you later remove the utility.
- Use the project’s current release channel. Download only from the project’s official site or repository, read the release notes, and confirm the build supports Windows 10 or Windows 11 as applicable.
- Install one manager at a time. Running multiple desktop utilities together can create overlapping hotkeys, duplicate overlays, or conflicting window actions.
- Test noncritical windows first. Create, rename, switch, and delete desktops; move a few ordinary application windows; then test any pinning, gesture, wallpaper, or notification features you plan to rely on.
- Check startup behavior. If the utility offers a start-with-Windows option, enable it only after confirming that switching and taskbar behavior are stable.
- Keep a fallback. Know how to exit or uninstall the utility and return to Task View. Native desktops remain available if the add-on is stopped.
Troubleshooting and compatibility checks
An application remains visible on the wrong desktop
This is the specific edge case VirtuaWin’s FAQ warns can occur with some application windows. Close and reopen the affected application, check whether it has its own “always on top” or multi-window mode, and compare its behavior with Windows’ native desktops. If the problem persists, reserve that application for a native desktop or choose an enhancement-layer tool instead of a standalone manager.
The taskbar shows a gap or does not refresh cleanly
VirtuaWin documents occasional taskbar gaps during switching. Allow the switch to complete, restart the manager, and test whether the behavior is tied to a particular taskbar configuration. If the taskbar remains unreliable, disable the utility at startup and use Windows’ built-in desktops while you investigate a compatible release.
Hotkeys do nothing
For SylphyHornPlus, first check for conflicts with other keyboard utilities, accessibility software, or game overlays. Reassign the conflicting combination in the utility’s settings if that option is available. Avoid changing several hotkey systems at once; test one binding and one desktop action before expanding your configuration.
The overlay or notifications are distracting
Desk Switcheroo and SylphyHornPlus are designed to add visual feedback. Reduce or disable the relevant overlay, notification, gesture, or wallpaper option in settings if you want a quieter desktop. A feature is useful only when its information is easier to process than opening Task View.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What is not included in this list
Dexpot describes virtual desktops, previews, switching, and window movement, and says it is free for private use. It is proprietary rather than open source, so it does not meet the criterion for these three picks.
Microsoft PowerToys is free and open source, but its FancyZones feature is a window-layout manager and Workspaces launches a set of applications into custom positions. Those are adjacent productivity tools, not virtual-desktop switchers, so they are not substitutes for the three managers above.
Verdict
Windows’ built-in desktops remain enough for straightforward workspace separation. For a configurable classic manager, start with VirtuaWin and account for its documented application and taskbar edge cases. For a taskbar-centered visual control, Desk Switcheroo is the more targeted option. For extra hotkeys, notifications, movement, pinning, gestures, and wallpaper controls while retaining Windows’ native model, SylphyHornPlus is the most natural fit.
