“Windows Update components must be repaired — Fixed” is a troubleshooter result, not an error code and not proof that every update problem is solved. Windows has detected damaged or inconsistent servicing information, run an automated repair, and reported that the action completed. Restart the PC and try Windows Update. If updates still fail, continue with DISM, SFC, a documented Windows Update component reset, and finally a supported repair-install or recovery option.
The sequence below separates what each tool repairs, when it needs an internet or installation source, and what to do when a step reports that it could not fix the problem.

What the “Fixed” message actually means
Windows Update depends on several servicing components: the Windows image and component store, protected system files, update services, and local update caches. The built-in troubleshooter checks parts of that state and may apply an automated correction. When it displays Windows Update components must be repaired — Fixed, “Fixed” describes that completed troubleshooter action.
It does not certify that the update engine is healthy, that a particular update will install, or that the original cause has disappeared. A download problem, an unavailable repair source, a damaged system file, or an error specific to one update can remain. Treat the result as a first diagnostic step, then verify by restarting and checking Windows Update again.

Microsoft calls Windows Update “an essential component of Windows 10, ensuring your system remains secure, stable, and up-to-date with the latest features.” Keeping it working matters, but the repair layer you need depends on what fails next.
Before repairing: capture the evidence
Do these quick checks before running commands. They make a later error code useful instead of leaving you guessing.
- Write down the exact update error code or message shown after the next failed attempt. A troubleshooter result alone is not specific enough to diagnose every failure.
- Note your Windows release and edition. A repair image or installation source must match both; instructions and recovery choices can differ by release.
- Save open work, connect the computer to reliable power, and use an administrator account. DISM and SFC can take time and should not be interrupted.
- If the PC contains important files, make a current backup before any recovery operation. The commands below are designed to repair Windows, but a backup protects you if a later recovery choice is required.
Repair sequence, from least disruptive to most comprehensive
1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- Open Get Help and start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Allow it to perform the checks and accept the repairs it proposes.
- Restart Windows, even if the app does not insist on an immediate restart.
- Open Windows Update, select Check for updates, and test the update again.
Other Windows editions may expose a Windows Update troubleshooter in Settings or Control Panel rather than Get Help; the label and location vary by release. Use the built-in troubleshooter supplied with that edition and follow the same restart-and-retest sequence.
2. Repair the Windows image with DISM
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repairs the Windows image and component store—the repository that servicing and updates rely on. Run it after the troubleshooter if the failure persists or if corruption is suspected.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly, including the spaces:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Progress can pause for a while; do not close the window merely because the percentage has not changed.
- Read the final status. A successful completion means DISM repaired what it could find, not that every future update is guaranteed to install.
- Restart Windows before moving to the next check.
Normally, DISM obtains replacement content through Windows Update. Therefore, DISM can report that it cannot find source files when the update path is itself unavailable or when required content is missing locally.
3. Repair protected files with SFC
System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows files and replaces corrupted copies when a usable replacement is available. Run it after DISM so the component store SFC depends on has already been serviced.
- Open an administrator Command Prompt again if the previous window was closed.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Let the verification reach 100 percent. Do not restart or power off while the scan is running.
- Read the result and restart Windows.
- Try Windows Update once more and record any new error code.
SFC and DISM have different jobs: DISM repairs the image/component store; SFC repairs protected system files. Running SFC repeatedly without addressing a damaged component store is unlikely to add information.
4. Supply a matching repair source when DISM cannot find files
If DISM says source files could not be found, provide repair media or another source that matches the installed Windows release and edition. Microsoft warns that a mismatched source can fail or leave corruption unresolved.
- Identify the installed release and edition before obtaining or selecting media.
- Use a supported installation source for that same release and edition, then rerun DISM with the source method documented for your Windows version.
- If the source does not match, stop and obtain the correct one rather than forcing the command. A wrong edition or build can produce another source error.
- After DISM completes successfully, run
sfc /scannowagain, restart, and test Windows Update.
The exact source syntax and available media options vary by Windows release. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the installed version instead of copying a command intended for a different build.

5. Reset Windows Update services and caches
When the image and protected files are healthy but updates still fail, the local update state may be stuck or inconsistent. Microsoft documents a Windows Update service-and-cache reset procedure for this situation.
That procedure temporarily stops the relevant update services, clears or renames their cached data, and starts the services again so Windows can build fresh state. Use Microsoft’s documented sequence for your release; service names, permissions, and cache locations can differ. Do not delete random folders or permanently disable update services. Restart when the reset is complete, then check for updates and save the exact error code if the attempt fails again.
6. Escalate to a repair install or recovery option
If the troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, and the documented reset do not resolve the problem, stop repeating the same scans. Use the recorded error code and servicing logs to identify whether one update, a servicing dependency, or broader Windows corruption is involved.
For continuing corruption, a supported repair install or recovery feature for the installed Windows release may be appropriate. A repair install can reinstall Windows while preserving files and, depending on the option and release, applications; recovery choices that reset the PC can have different preservation rules. Read the screen for the selected option, back up first, and verify that installation media matches the installed edition and release. Exact behavior is version-dependent, so do not assume that every “reset” or “reinstall” choice keeps apps.

The troubleshooter says “Fixed,” but the same update fails
Restart once, retry Windows Update, and capture the specific error code. Then proceed to DISM followed by SFC. The “Fixed” label records the troubleshooter action; it is not a completion certificate for the entire update system.

DISM ends with “source files could not be found”
Check the internet connection first, because the normal repair source is Windows Update. If that path is unavailable, use matching installation media or another supported source. Confirm release and edition before rerunning DISM; a mismatched source is a common reason for another failure.
SFC says it could not repair some files
Make sure DISM completed successfully, restart, and run SFC once more. If protected files still cannot be repaired, use the matching-source DISM path and then reassess. Persistent corruption is a reason to consult the exact error and logs and consider a supported repair install rather than running SFC indefinitely.
Updates still fail after all repairs
Use the exact Windows Update error code and servicing logs to choose the next branch. A component reset addresses services and caches; it will not automatically correct every driver, policy, compatibility, or single-update problem. If the evidence points to broader corruption, move to the release-appropriate repair or recovery option after backing up.
How the repair choices compare
| Option | Technical skill | Files and apps | Repair-source dependence | Time and restarts | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in troubleshooter | Low; guided | Designed as a non-destructive check; preservation behavior is not presented as a reinstall | Uses Windows’ own troubleshooting and servicing paths | Usually a short run plus a restart and retest | Applies targeted automated corrections |
| DISM, then SFC | Moderate; administrator Command Prompt | Repairs Windows components and protected files rather than resetting personal data | DISM normally uses Windows Update; a matching alternate source may be required | Can take time; restart after each completed stage | DISM services the image/component store; SFC checks protected files |
| Manual component reset | Moderate to advanced; follow the release-specific procedure exactly | Targets update state rather than reinstalling Windows | Uses local services and caches; later downloads still need a working update source | Several service operations, cache rebuild, and restart | Stops and restarts update services and clears or renames update caches |
| Repair install or recovery | Advanced; verify edition, release, and backup | Depends on the selected recovery option; some preserve files and apps, while reset choices may not | Requires supported installation or recovery files for the installed release | Longest option, with one or more restarts | Reinstalls or resets Windows according to the option selected |
Choose the least disruptive layer that addresses the evidence. Do not jump to a reset merely because the troubleshooter displayed “Fixed,” but do not keep rerunning the same scan when its output has stopped changing.

- Type the DISM and SFC commands exactly; extra switches copied from another Windows release can change their behavior.
- Keep the PC powered during servicing and recovery. Interrupting a repair can leave Windows in a worse state.
- Use only a repair source that matches the installed release and edition.
- Back up personal files before a repair install or recovery operation, and read whether the chosen option preserves applications.
- Keep the final error code and log details. They are more actionable than repeatedly reporting the generic troubleshooter result.
Optional shortcut
Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files; it can also adjust settings and clean temporary or cache files. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. Results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements—rather than replaces—your antivirus.
Bottom line
The message means the troubleshooter completed a repair attempt, not that Windows Update is guaranteed to work. Restart and test first; then run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, run sfc /scannow, provide a matching source if DISM requests one, and use the documented service/cache reset. If failures persist, follow the exact error code and logs toward a supported repair install or recovery option.
