Windows Symbolic Links vs. Shortcuts: What’s the Difference?

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

A Windows shortcut is a separate .lnk launcher interpreted by the Windows Shell. A symbolic link is a file-system path that redirects applications to another file or directory. Use a shortcut when someone should launch something with optional arguments and display settings; use a symbolic link when software must reach the target through an alternate path.

The fundamental difference

Although both features can appear to “point” at another location, they operate at different layers of Windows.

Shortcuts belong to the Windows Shell

A shortcut is a separate binary file, normally ending in .lnk, that the Windows Shell interprets. Explorer, the desktop, the Start menu and other Shell workflows can open that file and then launch or open its target. The shortcut is an object in its own right; the target remains a separate object. Microsoft describes Shell links and their stored data in the Win32 Shell links documentation.

Symbolic links belong to path resolution

A symbolic link is created through a file-system API or command. When an application opens a path containing the link, Windows resolves that path by replacing the symbolic-link component with the target path, then continues with any remaining components. The application is using a path, not opening a Shell launcher. Microsoft documents this behavior in Creating Symbolic Links.

This distinction explains most practical differences: a shortcut is useful when a person activates a launcher, while a symbolic link is useful when a program or workflow needs an alternate file-system path.

Side-by-side comparison

Question Shell shortcut (.lnk) Symbolic link
What is it? A separate binary link file interpreted by the Windows Shell. A file-system link that redirects path resolution.
Best fit Opening or launching a target from Explorer, Start, the desktop or another Shell workflow. Giving a file or directory another path so applications that use that path can reach the target.
Launch metadata Can store a working directory, command-line arguments, initial display state, icon, description and keyboard shortcut. The cited Microsoft documentation describes target-path behavior, not equivalent launcher metadata.
Target paths Stores a target location together with Shell-link data. Can be absolute or relative; Microsoft also documents UNC remote targets. Relative symbolic links are restricted to one volume.
Creation Use Windows Shell’s Create Shortcut command, or Shell link interfaces in software. Use mklink or the CreateSymbolicLink API.
Removing the link Deleting the .lnk removes the launcher file, not its target. Removing the link removes the link entry. Confirm the exact path and deletion command rather than assuming what a particular application will do with the target.

What a shortcut can store

A shortcut is more than a saved filename. Its Shell-link data can include:

  • the target location;
  • a working directory used when launching;
  • command-line arguments;
  • the initial display state, such as a normal, minimized or maximized window;
  • an icon;
  • a description; and
  • a keyboard shortcut.

These fields make a shortcut suitable for a person-facing launcher. For example, two .lnk files can launch the same executable with different arguments or working directories. The Shell reads the link’s metadata when the user activates it. A program that simply receives a file path does not automatically receive this launcher behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Creating a shortcut through Explorer’s Create shortcut action is therefore the natural choice for a desktop or Start-menu entry. The shortcut can be moved or renamed without moving the target itself. If the target is later moved, the stored target location may no longer resolve; that is a broken shortcut rather than a second copy of the target.

A shortcut also separates presentation from storage. You can place several launchers in different Shell locations while retaining one executable or document. Each launcher can present a different icon, description, argument set or starting directory. None of those settings changes the underlying target. Conversely, placing a .lnk beside a file does not create another file name that an application can open by ordinary path operations; the application must invoke the Shell behavior that understands the shortcut.

How symbolic links work in a path

Windows resolves a symbolic link while processing a path. Suppose an application opens C:ProjectsCurrentreport.txt, and Current is a symbolic link to another directory. Windows substitutes the link target for that component and continues resolving report.txt beneath the target. The application is still using an ordinary path operation; no Shell launcher needs to be opened.

This makes a symbolic link useful when software already expects a particular name. A script can continue opening C:ProjectsCurrentreport.txt even when the actual directory is elsewhere, provided the link target remains valid. The link occupies the alternate path; it does not duplicate the target’s contents.

Microsoft documents two target forms:

  • Absolute symbolic links contain a complete target path.
  • Relative symbolic links use relative path elements such as . and ...

Relative links have constraints that matter when a directory is moved. Microsoft states that relative symbolic links are restricted to a single volume. A link intended to work across volumes should not be designed as a relative link. The CreateSymbolicLink documentation also notes that a current-working-directory-relative input form is created as an absolute link, so the form of the path supplied to the API matters.

For example, a relative target using ..Shareddata is interpreted in relation to the link’s location, not in relation to whichever directory happens to be current in a later application. If the link and target are reorganized, the same relative text can resolve differently or stop resolving. Use an absolute target when the link should name one specific location, and use a relative target only when the intended relationship within one volume is deliberate.

UNC paths can be used as symbolic-link targets for remote files. That does not make every network share or application behave identically: the cited documentation establishes the path capability, while support for links can still vary by the program that opens the path.

Creating a symbolic link with mklink

Microsoft documents this command syntax for Windows 10, Windows 11 and multiple Windows Server releases; consult the current mklink reference for the support list applicable to your system:

mklink [[/d] | [/h] | [/j]] <link> <target>

The option determines the object type:

  • With no option, mklink creates a file symbolic link.
  • /d creates a directory symbolic link.
  • /h creates a hard link instead of a symbolic link.
  • /j creates a directory junction.

The order is important: provide the new link path first and the existing target second. For a file link, the conceptual form is:

mklink C:Pathalternate-name.txt C:Pathoriginal-name.txt

For a directory symbolic link, use /d:

mklink /d C:Pathalternate-folder C:Pathoriginal-folder

These examples show the command’s structure; choose paths that exist in your own environment and quote paths containing spaces according to the command shell’s normal rules. The created entry is the link. The target remains where it was.

A common mistake is reversing <link> and <target>. Think of the command as “create this new name, pointing to that existing object.” Also select the switch from the object you are linking: omit switches for a file symbolic link, use /d for a directory symbolic link, and do not substitute /h or /j unless you specifically need a hard link or junction.

Software can create links through the CreateSymbolicLink API instead of invoking mklink. The API supports absolute and relative targets, including . and .., and documents UNC targets. Its path interpretation rules still apply, so an API caller should decide explicitly whether the link is absolute or relative and whether both locations are on the same volume.

Choosing between a shortcut and a symbolic link

Choose a shortcut for a human-operated launcher

Use a shortcut when the requirement is “give a person an icon or menu item that opens this.” It is the better fit when you need any of the Shell metadata:

  • different command-line arguments for different launchers;
  • a particular working directory;
  • a chosen icon or description;
  • a keyboard shortcut; or
  • a specified initial window state.

A shortcut is also appropriate when the destination is meant to be opened through Explorer or another Shell surface rather than consumed as a path by software. It is a launcher, not a storage relocation mechanism.

Choose a symbolic link for an alternate path

Use a symbolic link when an application, script or workflow must open a path and reach the target transparently. Typical requirements include preserving an expected directory name while the actual data resides elsewhere, or exposing one file through another path. Because path resolution performs the redirection, the consuming program does not need to understand Shell shortcuts.

Do not select a symbolic link merely because its icon looks like a shortcut. The deciding question is whether the consumer needs a launcher or a path. If a command, configuration file or program is handed C:Aliassettings.ini, only a file-system link at that path can provide transparent redirection; a desktop shortcut with a similar name is unrelated.

For directories, decide between a symbolic link and a junction

If the requirement concerns a directory, mklink /d creates a directory symbolic link and mklink /j creates a directory junction. Both are directory-link mechanisms, but they are not interchangeable names for a .lnk file. The Microsoft command reference identifies the switches; the separate Hard Links and Junctions documentation covers the related file-system link types.

The Microsoft sources establish the command distinction, but they do not provide a universal application-compatibility matrix. If a particular program rejects or mishandles a directory link, check that program’s own documentation rather than assuming every program treats symbolic links and junctions identically.

Do not confuse symbolic links with hard links

A hard link is a separate file-system option. In mklink, /h creates a hard link for a file; it is not another name for a symbolic link. A directory junction, created with /j, is likewise distinct from both a directory symbolic link and a Shell shortcut.

The practical classification is:

  • .lnk shortcut: Shell launcher with optional launch metadata.
  • File symbolic link: alternate path to a file, created with mklink without an option.
  • Directory symbolic link: alternate path to a directory, created with mklink /d.
  • Hard link: file link created with mklink /h.
  • Directory junction: directory link created with mklink /j.

Calling all of these “shortcuts” obscures how Windows and applications encounter them. Use the precise term when documenting a system or troubleshooting a path. In particular, a hard link should not be presented as a symbolic link, and neither should be represented as a .lnk launcher.

Removal and safety considerations

Removing a shortcut

Deleting a .lnk deletes the shortcut file. Microsoft’s Shell-link model treats the link as separate from its target, so removing the launcher does not delete the target object. This makes it safe to remove an unwanted desktop or menu entry without intending to remove the application or document it opened.

Removing a symbolic link

A symbolic link is itself a directory entry that points elsewhere. Remove the link entry, not the target path. Because deletion commands and file-management tools differ in how they present links, verify the exact path before confirming deletion. Do not assume that a command aimed at a directory link has the same effect as a command aimed at the target directory.

Before removing anything, identify the object by its complete path and type. A link can sit beside its target with a similar name, and a command typed against the target rather than the link can affect the actual file or directory. Treat the link and target as two separate entries even when they appear together in Explorer.

Broken links and moved targets

A shortcut can become broken when its stored target location changes. A symbolic link can likewise stop resolving when its target path is moved or is no longer available. Relative links add the single-volume restriction described by Microsoft, so relocating either the link or its target can change whether the relative path remains valid. Repair the link by recreating it with the correct target rather than creating a second launcher and leaving the stale entry in place.

Common decisions and troubleshooting

“The program ignores my shortcut”

That is expected when the program is being given a path rather than the .lnk file through the Windows Shell. A shortcut carries Shell launch data; it is not a transparent alternate path. Create a symbolic link when the program must open the target through a path.

“I need arguments or a custom working directory”

Use a shortcut. Those are documented Shell-link fields, whereas the cited symbolic-link documentation describes path targets rather than launcher settings.

“I need a folder to appear at another path”

Use a directory symbolic link with mklink /d, or evaluate a directory junction with mklink /j when that is the link type your workflow requires. Do not create a .lnk file and expect software that opens the folder path to follow it.

“The link must point to another drive or a network location”

Choose the target form carefully. Microsoft documents UNC remote targets for symbolic links, while relative symbolic links are restricted to one volume. An absolute target is the appropriate form when the link must not depend on a relative location within that volume. Whether a specific application follows a remote or symbolic path remains application-dependent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Which item should I back up or move?”

The shortcut or symbolic link is only the link object; the target is separate. Preserve both when the destination data matters. Moving only the link can leave a launcher or path that no longer resolves, while moving only the target can invalidate the stored target location. Microsoft’s pages do not establish universal backup or cloud-sync behavior, so verify how your backup or synchronization software handles links before relying on it.

“Can I rename the link?”

Renaming a shortcut changes the launcher’s filename, not the stored target. Renaming a symbolic link changes the alternate path, while the target name remains unchanged. A relative symbolic link may still work after a rename if its relationship to the target is preserved; otherwise recreate it with the intended path.

“Why does the link work in one application but not another?”

The object types are defined by Windows, but applications can impose their own path-handling rules. The Microsoft documentation does not promise that every third-party program treats symbolic links, junctions or remote targets identically. Test the exact application and document its supported link type before deploying a dependency on it.

A quick decision checklist

  • Will a person click an icon or menu item? Choose a Shell shortcut.
  • Do you need arguments, a working directory, an icon, a description, a keyboard shortcut or an initial display state? Choose a Shell shortcut.
  • Must a program open an alternate file or directory path? Choose a symbolic link.
  • Is the target a directory? Select /d for a directory symbolic link or /j for a junction, based on the workflow’s requirements.
  • Is the target a file and do you specifically need a hard link? Use /h; do not label it a symbolic link.
  • Could the target be remote or cross-volume? Check absolute versus relative rules and the application’s support before deploying the link.
  • Before deleting anything, identify whether you are removing the link entry or the target path.
  • Will the link or target be moved later? Choose and test the path form, especially for a relative link.

What the Microsoft documentation establishes

Microsoft’s technical pages provide the reliable boundary between these objects: symbolic links participate in path resolution, while the Shell links documentation describes a binary link file with launcher data. The mklink reference documents the switches for file links, directory symbolic links, hard links and junctions. Microsoft also documents related distinctions in Hard Links and Junctions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those pages establish the object types and command syntax, not a universal guarantee that every third-party application, backup tool or synchronization service will treat every link identically. Test the exact application and workflow when compatibility is critical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Windows shortcut the same as a symbolic link?

No. A shortcut is a separate binary .lnk file interpreted by the Windows Shell. A symbolic link is a file-system object that redirects path resolution when an application opens a path.

Which should I use for a desktop icon?

Use a shortcut. It is designed for Shell workflows and can store an icon, description, arguments, working directory, keyboard shortcut and initial display state.

Which should I use when software expects another folder path?

Use a directory symbolic link with mklink /d, or a junction with mklink /j when that is the required link type. A .lnk file is not a transparent folder path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does mklink create without a switch?

It creates a file symbolic link. Use /d for a directory symbolic link, /h for a hard link, and /j for a directory junction.

Can a symbolic link point to a network location?

Microsoft documents UNC paths as symbolic-link targets. Whether a particular application follows that remote link remains application-dependent.

Are relative symbolic links portable between drives?

No. Microsoft states that relative symbolic links are restricted to a single volume. Consider an absolute target when the link must not depend on a relative relationship within one volume.

Does deleting a shortcut delete the target?

No. Deleting the .lnk removes the separate launcher file. For symbolic links, remove the link entry and verify the path so you do not delete the target instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a shortcut work when clicked but fail in a script?

Clicking invokes Windows Shell behavior that understands .lnk metadata. A script opening a path may need a symbolic link because it does not automatically treat a shortcut as an alternate file-system path.

The Bottom Line

A shortcut is a Shell-managed .lnk launcher with optional launch settings. A symbolic link is a file-system path redirection. Choose the shortcut for human-operated icons and customized launches; choose a symbolic link when an application or script must reach a file or directory through another path. For directories, distinguish /d symbolic links from /j junctions, and never confuse either with a hard link created by /h.
