Short answer: Treat Windows’ NVMe health panel as a useful, standardized warning system, not a complete diagnosis. Use the SSD maker’s utility for model-specific SMART attributes and supported short or extended tests. If Windows shows a critical warning—especially low spare capacity, degraded reliability, or read-only status—back up immediately and follow the drive maker’s support guidance. A clean result from either tool is not a guarantee that every failure mode has been ruled out.

Windows has two different “health” reports

People often compare a Windows health report with a manufacturer diagnostic tool without realizing that Windows exposes two separate experiences.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Device performance & health is a broad PC report

In Windows Security, Device performance & health checks general maintenance areas: storage capacity, battery life, apps and software, and the Windows Time service. It is not the detailed SMART-style view of an SSD. A managed computer can also have this page blocked by policy, so its absence does not diagnose a storage problem.

Disk properties contain the NVMe health fields

For a problematic disk on Windows 11, Microsoft documents the path Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes > Properties. In Windows 10, Microsoft’s guidance uses the label Manage disks and volumes. The labels and exact presentation can change with Windows updates, but this is the area that exposes the documented drive-health attributes.

Microsoft’s described monitoring covers NVM (NVMe) SSDs. It does not cover SATA SSDs or hard disk drives in the same way. Therefore, a missing health panel for a SATA drive is not evidence that the drive is healthy; it may simply be outside the feature’s documented coverage.

What Windows actually reads from an NVMe SSD

NVMe drives publish a standardized SMART/Health Information Log. Windows can display values from that log, including:

  • Critical-warning bits
  • Composite temperature
  • Available spare and the available-spare threshold
  • Percentage used
  • Data units read and written
  • Power-on hours
  • Unsafe shutdown count
  • Media and data-integrity errors
  • Error-information-log entry count

These fields are valuable because they provide a common baseline across NVMe models. They are still self-reported by the drive, and the standard fields do not describe every vendor-specific failure mode.

Critical warnings deserve action

Microsoft’s user-facing health guidance identifies warning conditions such as low available spare capacity, degraded reliability, and a drive entering read-only status. “Reliability is degraded” indicates significant media-related errors or an internal NVM-subsystem problem, rather than a cosmetic status change.

If Windows reports a critical warning for a storage device, stop treating the result as a monitoring exercise. Back up important files, avoid unnecessary writes, and contact the computer or SSD manufacturer. A green status after a warning clears should not be used as a reason to discard the backup.

Available spare is a reserve percentage

Available spare is a normalized percentage of the drive’s remaining spare capacity. NVMe also reports an available-spare threshold. Falling to or below that threshold can trigger a critical warning. This number is not the same as free space shown in File Explorer: it describes the flash-management reserve reported by the controller.

Percentage used is an endurance estimate

Percentage used is a vendor-specific estimate based on actual usage and the manufacturer’s prediction of NVM life. Microsoft states that a value of 100 means the estimated endurance of the NVM subsystem has been consumed, but may not indicate an NVM-subsystem failure. The value can also exceed 100.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes Percentage Used an estimate, not a literal failure countdown. A drive at 60 percent is not guaranteed to last twice as long as one at 30 percent, and a drive at 100 percent is not automatically unusable. Interpret the estimate alongside critical-warning bits, media errors, symptoms, and supported diagnostics.

Temperature units can be confusing

The raw NVMe health log reports composite device temperature in Kelvin. Windows’ support material presents its health temperature attribute in degrees Celsius. Do not compare a raw-log number and the Windows user-interface value without converting the units. Also remember that a composite temperature is a controller-reported device value, not necessarily the temperature of every NAND package.

What a manufacturer utility can add

An SSD maker’s utility can read the same standard SMART information while adding attributes, tests, and firmware functions specific to its models. The exact feature set depends on the SSD, controller path, driver, and utility version.

Model-specific SMART attributes

Manufacturers may expose names, thresholds, raw values, and interpretations that Windows does not show in its general NVMe panel. Those fields can help support staff identify a model-specific condition, but the maker’s documentation is the authority for what each attribute means. Do not transfer an attribute definition from one brand or controller to another.

Short and extended diagnostics

The reviewed WD SSD Dashboard manual documents automatic SMART retrieval when a drive is selected and provides short and extended SMART diagnostic tests. It also warns that those tests are unsupported for WD-branded NVMe SSDs with certain Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver versions. This is a practical example of why a missing test button does not necessarily mean the SSD is healthy or the utility is defective; the controller and driver path can determine whether a test is available.

Seagate’s SeaTools SSD guide documents SMART views for SATA and NVMe drives and the ability to export values to CSV. It describes SMART as an indicator system that can provide warning time for a backup. That documentation does not establish that every SeaTools function works with every non-Seagate drive, nor that SMART can predict every failure.

Vendor-specific NVMe commands

Microsoft documents APIs for reading standard NVMe log pages and a separate pass-through mechanism for vendor-specific NVMe commands. This distinction explains why a manufacturer utility may offer a model-specific operation that Windows’ built-in panel does not. It does not prove that every branded utility runs a more accurate test; support still depends on the exact model, firmware, driver, and storage controller.

Windows versus manufacturer tools: the practical differences

Comparison Windows NVMe health view Manufacturer utility
Interface coverage Documented for NVM/NVMe SSDs; not SATA SSDs or HDDs in the described feature Depends on the maker and utility; reviewed Seagate documentation covers SATA and NVMe SMART views
Information type Standard NVMe SMART/Health Information Log fields Standard fields plus model-specific attributes or interpretations when documented
Testing Status and health attributes; no general promise of a full surface diagnostic Short or extended tests may be available for supported models; availability can depend on driver and controller
Driver and controller dependence Windows’ NVMe stack and supported storage path determine what is exposed Utility, firmware, controller mode, and driver determine which functions work; some Intel RST combinations can disable tests
Best-supported action Monitor standard values; back up and seek support after a critical warning Confirm model-specific conditions, run supported diagnostics, export results, and follow the maker’s recovery or replacement guidance

Neither column is a universal winner. Windows is useful for a consistent first check, while the maker’s utility is the better place to investigate attributes or tests that only the drive vendor documents.

What to trust when the results disagree

1. A Windows critical warning outranks a reassuring label elsewhere

Back up first. Low spare capacity, degraded reliability, and read-only status are concrete conditions that Microsoft identifies as requiring attention. Do not postpone the backup while searching for a second green status screen.

2. A clean Windows result is not an all-clear

The documented Windows page covers NVMe health attributes, not SATA drives or hard drives, and it only reflects values the drive reports. The sources do not claim that those fields detect every electronic, firmware, connector, controller, or sudden-death failure. If the computer is freezing, dropping the drive, logging storage errors, or corrupting files, investigate even when the panel looks normal.

3. Use the exact SSD model’s documentation

Identify the model and capacity printed in Windows or on the drive, then obtain the utility and support instructions for that model. A generic utility may display basic SMART data while lacking the vendor’s thresholds, firmware checks, or diagnostic support.

4. Treat endurance as an estimate

Combine Percentage Used with media-error counts, unsafe shutdowns, critical-warning bits, operating symptoms, and a supported diagnostic. Do not convert a percentage into a promised number of months or terabytes remaining.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Prefer the vendor’s interpretation over internet thresholds

SMART attributes are not interchangeable across controllers. A raw value that looks high or low may be normal for one model and significant for another. Use the drive maker’s current support material or ask its support team to interpret the result.

How to check an NVMe drive in Windows

  1. Open the disk properties page. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes > Properties. In Windows 10, open the corresponding Manage disks and volumes area.
  2. Select the physical drive, not only a volume. Multiple partitions can belong to one SSD. Confirm the model and capacity so you are checking the device that contains the files in question.
  3. Read the warning state first. Look for critical-warning text such as low spare, degraded reliability, or read-only status before interpreting ordinary temperature or usage values.
  4. Record the details. Capture the model, firmware version if shown, temperature, available spare, percentage used, media errors, unsafe shutdowns, and error-log count. A screenshot or written record gives support staff a baseline.
  5. Back up before troubleshooting. If a critical warning or file-access symptom exists, copy irreplaceable data to a separate destination before running tests, firmware updates, or repeated repairs.

How to use a manufacturer diagnostic safely

  1. Confirm the model and interface. Distinguish NVMe from SATA and note whether the drive is connected directly to the motherboard, through a USB enclosure, or behind a RAID/RST controller.
  2. Download the utility from the SSD maker’s official support channel. Do not use an unrelated vendor’s firmware package or a third-party firmware mirror. Microsoft advises obtaining firmware directly from the OEM, solution vendor, or drive vendor because Windows cannot verify the integrity of a firmware image.
  3. Read compatibility notes before launching a test. Check supported Windows versions, controller modes, encryption requirements, and driver restrictions. The WD manual’s Intel RST limitation demonstrates why a test may be unavailable on an otherwise recognized drive.
  4. Run the read-only or short test first when the model supports it. Save the result and any error code. A short test is an initial screen, not proof that every NAND cell and controller function is healthy.
  5. Use an extended test only when the maker supports it and your backup is current. Extended diagnostics can take longer and may increase drive activity. Follow the utility’s instructions about power, sleep settings, and interruption.
  6. Export the report if the utility permits it. Seagate’s guide documents CSV export for SMART values. Keep the file with the drive model and firmware details so a support agent can correlate the readings.
  7. Apply firmware only with a recovery plan. Confirm the exact model and revision, keep the computer on reliable power, and maintain a separate backup. If the drive is already unstable, contact support before attempting an update.

Common situations and the right response

Windows reports “Reliability is degraded”

Back up immediately, minimize writes, record the health fields, and contact the computer or SSD maker. A manufacturer diagnostic can help confirm the condition, but a passing short test does not erase the Windows warning or restore lost reliability.

Percentage Used is 100 or higher, but there are no critical warnings

Do not declare the drive failed solely from this field. Microsoft says 100 means the estimated endurance has been consumed and may not indicate subsystem failure; values may exceed 100. Increase backup discipline, check media errors and symptoms, and ask the maker whether the model remains supported for your workload.

The manufacturer utility sees the drive but offers no test

Check the model’s support matrix, driver version, controller mode, encryption state, and whether the drive is behind USB or RAID. Some tools intentionally disable tests on unsupported paths. Lack of a test button is not a health verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows shows no health panel for a SATA SSD

This is expected under Microsoft’s documented NVMe-only coverage. Use the SATA drive maker’s SMART view or another supported diagnostic path, and judge the result together with operating symptoms and backups.

A test passes but the computer still crashes

Investigate the wider storage path: firmware, motherboard slot, power delivery, cable or enclosure, controller driver, operating-system errors, and memory. A SMART test samples the conditions it was designed to test; it cannot certify every component involved in file access.

The drive is read-only

Copy data while it remains accessible and avoid attempts to force additional writes. Read-only status is one of the critical conditions Microsoft identifies. Use the maker’s recovery instructions or professional data-recovery support if ordinary copying fails.

When replacement is justified

Replacement is a reasonable next step after confirmed failure, recurring critical warnings, persistent media errors, or a manufacturer diagnostic that identifies an unrecoverable fault. Do not replace a drive solely because Percentage Used reached 100; that value is an endurance estimate and is not, by itself, proof of failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match any replacement to the computer’s interface and physical format—such as the correct NVMe module or SATA connection—plus capacity, operating-system support, and any heatsink or mounting requirements. The available evidence does not establish a universal replacement model, price, capacity, or compatibility choice.

Bottom line: use both tools for different jobs

Windows’ NVMe health report is the fastest standardized warning layer. It can expose critical warnings and core SMART/Health Information Log values, but it does not cover SATA drives in the documented feature and cannot guarantee that every failure mode is absent. The manufacturer utility adds model-specific attributes, supported short or extended diagnostics, CSV reports, and firmware guidance when the drive and driver path allow them.

When readings differ, do not pick the greenest label. A critical Windows warning triggers backup and support; a clean reading calls for continued monitoring rather than certainty; and a manufacturer test helps interpret the exact model. The safest judgment comes from the warning state, SMART details, symptoms, compatibility limits, and a current backup considered together.
